  • In the present paper, three types of the flow solvers were used to investigate the influence on the airfoil shape optimization. The adopted equations, i.e., Euler , thin layer Navier- Stokes and full Navier-Stokes ones, are solved using implicit LU-ADI decomposition scheme. The feasible direction algorithm with the sinusoidal function was used as an optimization algorithm. The present numerical method was applied to the drag minimization problems under the initial shape of NACA0012 airfoils.

  • Numerical analysis of three-dimensional vicous flow is used to compute the design speed operating line of a transonic axial-flow compressor. The Navier-Stokes equation was solved by an explicit finite-difference numerical scheme and the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was applied. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing were used to improve convergence. Two-stage axial compressor of a turboshaft engine developed KARI was chosen for the analysis. Numerical results show reasonably good agreements with experimental measurements made by KARI. Numerical solutions indicate that there exist a strong shock-boundary layer interaction and a subsequent large flow separation. It is also observed that the shock is moved ahead of the blade passage at near-stall condition.

  • An efficient inverse design method based on the MGM(Modified Garabedian-McFadden) method has been developed. The 2-D Navier-Stokes equations are solved for obtaining the surface pressure distributions and coupled with the MGM method to perform the inverse design. The MGM method is a residual-correction technique, in which the residuals are the difference between the desired and the computed pressure distribution. The developed code was applied to several airfoil shapes and the propeller. It has been found that they are well converged to their targeting shapes.

  • A numerical study based on the three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver is carried out to analyze the flowfield through a single stage transonic compressor. Explicit four-step Runge-Kutta scheme with spatially variable time step and implicit residual smoothing is used. The governing equations are discretized with exploit finite difference method. Mixed-out average method is used at the interface between rotor and stator. And, an artificial dissipation model is used to assure the stability of solution. The results with k-$\omega$ turbulence model were compared to the results with Baldwin-Lomax model, and physical phenomena of transonic compressor are presented. The two turbulence models give the results that show reasonably good agreements with experimental data.

  • An electromagnetic pump using a tubular induction motor (TLIM) has been proposed to pump liquid metal fluids. TLIM has been designed for liquid metal flow systems with a motor with a thrust force of 40~77[N]. The flow characteristics have been investigated by solving the Navier-Stokes equation, where the Lorentz force was included simply by considering it as a constant in the Navier-Stokes equation. A wood metal was chosen to simulate the liquid metal. The effect of Lorentz force on the flow rate was investigated. An experiment was conducted and its results were compared with those of the simulation. The simulation result showed an overestimation of about 17% compared with the experimental one.

  • In this paper, a numerical procedure for the calculation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a generalized nonorthogonal body fitted coordinate system is proposed and is validated through three test problems. Present numerical procedure derives the pressure equation by using the pressure substitution method on the regular grid system, and discretized momentum equations are based on the covariant velocity components. Cavity flow, backward facing step flow, and two dimensional channel flow with a sinusoidal wavy wall are chosen as three test problems. Numerical solutions obtained by present procedure shows a good agreement with previous numerical and/or experimental results. Convergence rate is also satisfactory.

  • The Navier-Stokes equations with variable density are challenging problems in numerical analysis community. We recently built the 2nd order stabilized Gauge-Uzawa method [SGUM] to solve the Navier-Stokes equations with constant density and have estimated theoretically optimal accuracy. Also we proved that SGUM is unconditionally stable. In this paper, we apply SGUM to the Navier-Stokes equations with nonconstant variable density and find out the stability condition of the algorithms. Because the condition is rather strong to apply to real problems, we consider Allen-Cahn scheme to construct unconditionally stable scheme.

  • This paper studies the existence of weak solutions and the stability of stationary solutions to stochastic 3D globally modified Navier-Stokes equations with unbounded delays in the phase space BCL-∞(H). We first prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions by using the classical technique of Galerkin approximations. Then we study stability properties of stationary solutions by using several approach methods. In the case of proportional delays, some sufficient conditions ensuring the polynomial stability in both mean square and almost sure senses will be provided.

  • Numerical study is presented for the analysis of three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in multiblade centrifugal fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - $\epsilon$ turbulence model are transformed to non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational area is divided into three blocks; core, impeller and scroll, which are linked by multi-block method. The flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow, and mathematical formula established from the cascade theory and empirical coefficient are employed to simulate tile flow through the impeller. From comparisons between the computational results and the experimental data, the validity of the mathematical formula for the blade forces was examined and good results were obtained qualitatively. Hence, we can get the flow characteristics of multi-blade centrifugal fan and it will be a corner stone of the development of the multiblade centrifugal fan.
