  • To assay for antioxidant capacity of natural products considered important in producing human health benefits, a practical and economical method using pellet techniques was developed. A standard visualizing reagent, 1,1diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), was mixed with a water-miscible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), serving as a solid phase support for the DPPH reagent. A DPPH pellet was prepared by dropping a small volume of the DPPH solution onto PET film, and drying in an oven. The PVA-based DPPH pellet was dissolved into water, in which the water-miscible PVA plays as a non-ionic surfactant to help the DPPH reagent to be dissolved into the solvent. Using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant capacity of water-soluble extracts of black soybean, barley, green tea, and green gram was examined. Among the natural products tested, green tea showed the highest antioxidant capacity. This PVA-based DPPH antioxidant assay can be further applied in the natural food, raw plant material, and health product inspection field.

  • An analytical procedure based on the transfer matrix method to estimate not only the natural frequencies but also vibration mode shapes of the thin-walled members composed of interconnected cylindrical shell panels is presented. The transfer matrix is derived from the differential equations for the cylindrical shell panels. The point matrix relating the state vectors between consecutive shell panels are used to allow the transfer procedures over the cross section of the members. As a result, the interactions between the shell panels of the cross sections of the members can be considered. Although the transfer matrix method is naturally a solution procedure for the one-dimensional problems, this method is well applied to thin-walled members by introducing the trigonometric series into the governing equations of the problem. The natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes of the thin-walled members composed of number of interconnected cylindrical shell panels are observed in this analysis. In addition, the effects of the number of shell panels on the natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes are also examined.

The oxide film formed in passivation process of zinc has showed the electronic properties of n-type semiconductor based on the Mott-Schottky equation. And it was found out that the oxide film consisted ZnO and $Zn(OH)_2$ was composed of deep and shallow donors.

  • The free vibration and dynamic response of cross-ply for CFRP and GFRP laminated circular cylindrical shells under dynamic loadings are investigated by using the first-order shear deformation shell theory. The modal analysis technique is used to develop the analytical solutions of simply supported cylindrical shells under dynamic load. The analysis is based on an expansion of the loads, displacements and rotations in a double Fourier series which satisfies the and boundary conditions of simply support. Analytical solution is assumed to be separable into a function of time and a function of position. In this paper, the considered load forces are step pulse, sine pulse, triangular(1, 2, 3) pulse and exponential pulse. The solution for a given loading pulse can be found by involving the convolution integral. The results show that the dynamic response are governed primarily by the natural period of the structure.

  • In the present study, we aim to utilize the numerical solution frequency results of functionally graded beam under thermal and dynamic loadings to train and test an artificial neural network. In this regard, shear deformable functionally-graded beam structure is considered for obtaining the natural frequency in different conditions of boundary and material grading indices. In this regard, both analytical and numerical solutions based on Navier's approach and differential quadrature method are presented to obtain effects of different parameters on the natural frequency of the structure. Further, the numerical results are utilized to train an artificial neural network (ANN) using AdaGrad optimization algorithm. Finally, the results of the ANN and other solution procedure are presented and comprehensive parametric study is presented to observe effects of geometrical, material and boundary conditions of the free oscillation frequency of the functionally graded beam structure.

  • This paper analytically investigates the free vibration analysis of functionally graded-carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) plates by dynamic stiffness method (DSM). The properties of CNTRC are determined with the extended rule of mixture. The governing differential equations of motion based on the first-order shear deformation theory of CNTRC plate are derived using Hamilton's principle. The FG-CNTRC plates are studied for a uniform and two different distributions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The accuracy and performance of the DSM are compared with the results obtained from closed closed-form and semi-analytical solution methods in previous studies. In this study, the effects of boundary condition, distribution type of CNTs, plate aspect ratio, plate length to thickness ratio, and different values of CNTs volume fraction on the natural frequencies of the FG-CNTRC plates are investigated. Finally, various natural frequencies of the plates in different conditions are provided as a benchmark for comparing the accuracy and precision of the other analytical and numerical methods.

  • Intentional releases occur frequently during maintenance in gas supplying companies, which may result in unpleasant odors, and the possible mistaken belief of a gas accident. Therefore, this study developed a chemical process for effective odorant removal in natural gas using an active chemical that is released intentionally during maintenance and inspection. To develop an effective treatment process for removing the odorant from released natural gas, the effluent concentrations of the odorant in the released gas were measured after a chemical oxidation reaction with a sodium hypochlorite solution in a compact gas scrubbing equipment newly devised in this study. The device was based on a mixed gas vent after the solution inject odorant in the gas through the energy of the venting gas. The cascade combination of a venturi pipe and mixing chamber was developed to remove the odorant effectively from the purposely-released natural gas using an oxidative reaction between the mercaptan compounds (odorant) and the sodium hypochlorite solution. On the other hand, the developed method could be applied limitedly to a relatively small gas release from a low-pressure source. Further studies will be needed to apply the developed process to a large-scale gas release from a high-pressure source.

  • This paper presents a study on the introduction of User Model-Based Dialogue System. Also we present a plan-based Korean dialogue system as a natural language database user interface for product search. The system can be characterized by its support for mixed initiative to give user more control over dialogue, employment of user model to reflect user's preferences, alternative solution suggestion if there is no product matched exactly to user's requirements, handling circumlocution which frequently occurs in dialogues. The user modeling shell system BGP-MS is adapted for the system. The system provides for a user-friendly database user interface by managing dialogue intelligently. By its implementation and test, it has been shown that the user model-based dialogue system can be utilized effectively for product search.

  • We designed new anthracene-based host material to increase color purity as well as device efficiency. The new blue host, 9,10-bis(2,4-dimethylphenyl)anthracene (BDA), has highly twisted structure and wide band gap due to ortho interaction between anthracene and introduced 2,4-dimethylphenyl substituents. BDA exhibited deep blue fluorescence in solution (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 410 nm) and in solid state (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 429 nm), respectively, with the wide optical band gap (E = 3.12 eV). Blue-light-emitting OLEDs using obtained host and 2% Flu-DPAN as emitter showed 8 cd/A of high efficiency as well as high color purity [CIE coordinates = (0.15, 015)].
