  • AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a major cellular energy sensor and master regulator of metabolic homeostasis. On activation, this cellular fuel sensing enzyme induces a series of metabolic changes to balance energy consumption via multiple downstream signaling pathways controlling nutrient uptake and energy metabolism. This pivotal role of AMPK has led to the development of numerous AMPK activators which might be used as novel drug candidates in the treatment of AMPK related disorders, diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases. Consequently, a number of patents have been published on AMPK activators from natural products and other sources. This review covers the patented AMPK activators from natural products and their therapeutic potential in treatment or prevention of metabolic diseases including diabetes and obesity.

  • Numerical calculations are carried out for evaluating the natural convection induced by the temperature difference between a hot inner circular cylinder and a cold outer square enclosure. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained by using the finite volume method to model an inner circular cylinder that was designed by using the immersed boundary method (IBM) for a Rayleigh number of $10^7$. In this study, we investigate the effect of the location ($\delta$) of the inner cylinder, which is located along the vertical central axis of the outer enclosure, on the heat transfer and fluid flow. The natural convection changes from unsteady to steady state depending on the $\delta$. The two critical lower bound and upper bound positions are ${\delta}_{C,L}$ = 0.05 and ${\delta}_{C,U}$ = 0.18, respectively. Within these defined bounds, the thermal and flow fields are in steady state.

  • The sense of crisis regarding regional extinction due to low birth rates and an aging population is expanding. Generally, the local extinction index is used to analyze local extinction. However, it is challenging to diagnose the actual situation of village extinction risk in rural areas, even though the regional extinction index can be analyzed in units such as Si-Gun-Gu and Eup-Myeon-Dong. This difficulty arises because the regional extinction index solely relies on natural population growth indicators (elderly population and female population aged 20-39). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a village extinction index that can identify the disappearance of rural villages. Additionally, the aim is to apply the developed indicators to the village (administrative ri) spatial unit. The existing regional extinction index used only mortality-related indicators as factors for natural population decline and fertility-related indicators as factors for natural population growth. However, the developed village extinction index included not only the factors of natural population change but also incorporated social population growth factors and factors related to the pace of village extinction. This is the key difference between the developed village extinction index and the existing regional extinction index. In this study, the indicators of "total population," "number of young women aged 20-44," "number of elderly population aged 70 or older," and "number of incoming population" were selected to develop a village extinction index. The village extinction index was developed by incorporating both natural population growth indicators and social population growth indicators. The developed village extinction index was applied to administrative villages. This research is expected to provide a more accurate understanding of the current state of rural villages facing extinction.

  • In this paper, we consider interval number-valued random variables and fuzzy number-valued random variables and discuss Choquet integrals of them. Using these properties, we define the Choquet expected value of fuzzy number-valued random variables which is a natural generalization of the Lebesgue expected value of Lebesgue expected value of fuzzy random variables. Furthermore, we discuss some application of them.

  • A study of the natural vibrations of beam resting on elastic foundation with finite number of transverse open cracks is presented. Frequency equations are derived for beams with different end restraints. Euler-Bernoulli beam on Pasternak foundation and Euler-Bernoulli beam on Pasternak foundation are investigated. The cracks are modeled by massless substitute spring. The effects of the crack location, size and its number and the foundation constants, on the natural frequencies of the beam, are investigated.

  • Natural convection flows in a cubical, air-filled cavity that has one pair of opposing faces isothermal at different temperatures, Th and Tc, the remaining faces having a linear variation from Tc to Th are numerically simulated by a new solution code(PowerCFD) using unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Rayleigh number as high as 105 and three inclination angles ${\theta}$ of the isothermal faces from horizontal: namely ${\theta}=0$, 45 and $90^{\circ}$. Interesting features are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions and experimental results found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the laminar convection in a cubical, air-filled cavity with differentially heated walls.

  • The solution for the natural convection in internally finned horizontal annuli is obtained by using a numerical simulation of time-dependent and two-dimensional governing equations. The fins existing in annuli influence the flow pattern, temperature distribution and heat transfer rate. The variations of the On configuration suppress or accelerate the free convective effects compared to those of the smooth tubes. The effects of fin configuration, number of fins and ratio of annulus gap width to the inner cylinder radius on the fluid flow and heat transfer in annuli are demonstrated by the distribution of the velocity vector, isotherms and streamlines. The governing equations are solved efficiently by using a parallel implementation. The technique is adopted for reduction of the computation cost. The parallelization is performed with the domain decomposition technique and message passing between sub-domains on the basis of the MPI library. The results from parallel computation reveal in consistency with those of the sequential program. Moreover, the speed-up ratio shows linearity with the number of processor.

  • A numerical solution is presented for the natural convection heat transfer from two vertical fins using a spectral finite difference method. Virtual distant boundary conditions for two bodies that are compatible with plume behavior and with an overall continuity condition are introduced. A boundary-fitted coordinate system is formed. Streamlines, isotherms, mean Nusselt numbers and drag & lift coefficients are presented for a variety of dimensionless parameters such as a Grashof number and a Prandtl number at a steady-state. Extensive effectiveness of a spectral finite difference method was established.

  • This numerical study investigate resonance frequency of natural convection for steady state, periodic flow and chaotic flow in two-dimensional direct numerical simulations, differentially heated, vertical cavities having aspect ratios near unity. The enclosure cavity has isothermal and time dependent temperature side walls and adiabatic top/bottom walls. The aspect ratio is 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 for the varying Rayleigh number. Resonance frequency for AR=1 has decrease as the aspect ratio and the Rayleigh number are increasing.

  • A numerical study on natural convection in a vertical square cavity filled with a porous medium is carried out with Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy flow model, and the validity of local thermodynamic equilibrium assumption is studied. The local thermodynamic equilibrium refers to the state in which a single temperature can be used to describe a heat transfer process in a multiphase system. With this assumption, the analysis is greatly simplified because only one equation is needed to describe the heat transfer process. But prior to using this assumption, it is necessary to know in what conditions the assumption can be used. The numerical results of this study reveal that large temperature difference between fluid phase and solid phase exists near wall region, paticularily when the convection becomes dominant over conduction. And the influence of flow parameters such as fluid Rayleigh number, fluid Prandtl number, dimensionless particle diameter and conductivity ratio are investigated.
