The Constituents of the Aerial Part of Gastrodia elata Blume

  • From the MeOH extract of the aerial part of Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB) (Family: Orchidaceae), eight compounds have been isolated on repeated column chromatography, and their structures were elucidated as dotriacontanoic acid (1), beta-sitosterol (2), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (3), docosanoic acid oxiranylmethyl ester (4), hentriacotanoic acid (5), octadecanoic acid (6), benzoic acid (7) and gastrodin (8) on the basis of their spectral evidences including EI-Mass and 2D-NMR spectrum. All of them were obtained from the aerial part of Gastrodia elata Blume for the first time, in which compound 4 is a novelty to our best knowledge. It is also known that a phenolic glucoside, gastrodin is a major constituent just like Gastrodia rhizome.

  • Two new triterpenoid saponins, named segetoside D and E, have been isolated from the seeds of Vaccaria segetalis. On the basis of chemical reactions and spectral data, structures of segetoside D and E have been established as: $28-O-[{\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl-(1{\rightarrow}4)-{\alpha}-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1{\rightarrow}2)]-[5-O-acetyl-{\alpha}-arabinofuranosyl(1{\rightarrow}3)]-[4-O-acetyl-{\beta}-D-fucopyranosyl]-quillaic\;acid-3-O-[{\beta}-D-galactopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)]6-O-methyl\;ester-{\beta}-D-glucuronopyranoside$ and $28-O-[{\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl-(1{\rightarrow}4)-{\alpha}-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1{\rightarrow}2)]-[5-O-acetyl-{\alpha}-arabinofuranosyl(1{\rightarrow}3)]-[4-O-acetyl-{\beta}-D-fucopyranosyl]-quillaic\;acid\;-3-O-[{\beta}-D-galactopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)]-6-O-n-butyl\;ester-{\beta}-D-glucuronopyranoside$, respectively.

Simultaneous determination of phytochemical constituents in Paeonia lactiflora extracts using the HPLC-UV method

  • Qantitative analysis of six compounds: (+)-catechin, benzoic acid, gallic acid methyl ester, paeonol, paeoniflorin, and albiflorin from Paeonia lactiflora extracts was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography and an ultraviolet (UV) detector, following different extraction methods. A reverse-phase column was used in a gradient elution system, and UV detection was performed at 280 nm. The results showed that the quantity of paeoniflorin was the highest in ethanol and water extracts (73.89 and 57.87 mg/g, respectively) among the six compounds. This study contributes a good analysis method for the contents of P. lactiflora and would be propitious for developing medicines and functional foods.

Design and Manufacturing of Natural Composite Chemical Container Tank Using Resin Flow Simulation

  • In this study, an investigation on mechanical properties of flax natural fiber composite is performed as a precedent study on the design of eco-friendly structure using flax natural fiber composite. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite panel. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the dry layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. In this work, the resin flow analysis of VARTM manufacturing method is performed. A series of flax composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of chemical storage tank for agricultural vehicle was performed using flax/vinyl ester. After structural design and analysis, the resin flow analysis of VARTM manufacturing method was performed.

  • From the Paeoniae Radix, gallic acid methyl ester, (+)-catechin, paconiflorin, albiflorin, paeonol, ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and campesterol, benzoic acid, oleanolic acid, hederagenin and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ 3-O-glucoside were isolated and characterized by means of spectral data. Oleanolic acid and hederagenin have been isolated for the first time from the genus Paeonia.

  • From the root barks of Araila elata Seem.(Araliaceae) three known saponins together with oleanolic acid and $\beta$-sitosterol $3-O-\beta$-D-glucoside were isolated. The saponins were identified as oleanolic acid $28-O-\beta$-D-glucoside were isolated. The saponins were identified as oleanolic acid $28-O-\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl ester, oleanolic acid $3-O-\beta$-D-glucuronopyranoside and oleanolic acid $3-O-\alpha$-L-arabinofuranoysyl-(1$\rightarrow$4)-$\beta$-D-glucuronopyranoside(narcissiflo on the basis of chemical and spectra data. The latter two saponins were isolated as their dimethylesters as well as monomethylesters.

  • 피부암의 형성과 피부 조직에서 나타나는 단백질 분해활성의 변화와의 상과관계를 조사하기 위하여, 쥐의 피부에 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene과 photbor ester를 차례로 처리하였다. 이 결과, 암이 유발된 피부 조직에서는 대조군에 비하여 plasminogen Activator(PA)의 활성도는 약 3배가 높게 나타났다. 더우기, PA의 활성도는 암 유발전(proteolytic activity)의 조직에서도 약6배가 정도 증가하였다. 반면,casein과 insulin의 분해활성도는 암조직에서 현저히 감소되었고 anti-trypsin의 활성도는 대조군의 것과 거의 비슷하게 나타났다. 따라서, PA 및 PLP활성도의 증가현상은 피부암에서 특징적으로 나타나는 것으로 보이며, 이 암의 전이 및 침투에 밀접한 관계가 있는 것으로 사료된다.

Chemical reconstruction of Castor Oil --Research of Environmentally Friendly Lubricants

  • Natural castor oil was chemically reconstructed to extend the carbon chains by means of iso-reaction so as to improve the rheological behavior, by way of increasing the viscosity index and decreasing the pour point. The rheological and tribological characteristics of the reconstructed castor oil were comparatively investigated with those of the natural castor oil and several other vegetable oils and a mineral oil. The friction and wear test results on a four-ball machine indicate that the chemically reconstructed castor oil has considerably improved rheological and tribological properties as compared with the natural castor oil. It shows a greatly increase viscosity index and largely decreased pour point, which makes it applicable to low temperature lubrication. The chemically reconstructed castor oil even shows better tribological behavior than pentaerythritol ester or di-iso-capryl sebacate. However, it is still needed to increase the oxidation stability of the reconstructed castor oil.

  • A stereospecific synthesis of 3-methyl-5-(1-hydroxy-4-oxo-2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-cis, trans-2,4-pentadienoic acid (abscisic acid) from ${\alpha}-ionone$ has been investigated. Ethyl 5-(2,6,6-trimetyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-trans-4-penten-2-ynoate $({\alpha},{\beta}-acetylenic\;ester)$, which was synthesized from alpha-ionone in two steps, was stereospecifically converted in good yield into ethyl 3-methyl-5-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-cis, trans-2, 4-pentadienoate $({\alpha}-ionylideneacetate)$ by the conjugate addition of lithium dimethylcuprate at $-78^{\circ}C$. Basic hydrolysis of the ethyl ${\alpha}-ionylideneacetate$ gave an abscisic acid precursor, 3-methyl-5-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-cis, trans-2,4-pentadienoic acid, which can be oxidized to yield abscisic acid.
