  • Hazardous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) are mainly originated from imperfect combustion of fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal. The consumptions of not only petroleum but also coal have been increasing in the East Asian countries. This review describes the result of international collaboration research concerning characteristics and major contributors of atmospheric PAHs and NPAHs in cities in Japan, Korea, China and Russia. We collected airborne particulates in ten cities in the above countries and six PAHs and eleven NPAHs were determined by HPLC methods using fluorescence and chemiluminescence detections. The total PAH concentrations were much higher in Chinese cities (Fushun, Tieling, Shenyang and Beijing) than those in other cities (Vladivostok, Busan, Kanazawa, Kitakyushu, Sapporo and Tokyo). The total NPAH concentrations were also higher in Chinese cities than those in the other cities. The [NPAH]/[corresponding PAH] ratios are much larger in diesel-engine exhaust particulates than those in coal-burning particulates. The [1-nitropyrene]/[pyrene] ratio of airborne particulates was much smaller in the four Chinese cities, suggesting that coal combustion systems such as coal heaters were the main contributors. On the other hand, the ratios were larger in Korean and Japanese cities, suggesting the large contribution of diesel-engine vehicles.

  • Coal-fired power plants use coal as the main raw material, and when a coal is moved, a dust generation and spontaneous ignition of coal occur. To prevent this, water is sprayed. As a result, wastewater called "coal-dust water" flows out of coal dust and water mixed together, causing environmental pollution. In this study, in order to solve this problem, we developed a natural flocculant that can purify water by aggregating fine dust using chitosan and tried to prove its applicability. It was found that the optimum flocculation concentration was 4 ppm by adding various concentrations of flocculant to the coal-dust water, and it was confirmed that the developed material had very good coal-dust flocculation capacity through permeability and coal-dust removal efficiency. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the flocculant was evaluated through the MTT assay and it was found that there is no toxicity at all. We believe that the flocculant developed in this study can effectively adsorb coal-dust without affecting human and natural ecosystems.

  • In order to investigate the changes of hydroxyproline amount and pathologic finding in rat lung which were instilled the natural coal and free silica dust intratracheally, the subjects were divided into two groups as follows. The control group was only administered intratracheally 0.5 ml of normal saline, and the experimental groups were instilled at once the turbid solution containing 10 mg, 30 mg and 50 mg of natural coal and free silica dust each, subjects were sacrified at the 3rd and the 20th week each after the experiment. Hydroxyproline amount in the right upper lung was measured by Woessner method and HPLC (modified Dunphy) method, and the pathlogic finding of lung tissue were observed for hematoxylin-eosin staining, Bielschowski method and Masson's trichrome method. The results were as follows. 1) The wet lung weights of all experimental groups excluding in the groups instilled 10 mg and 30 mg of natural coal dust at 3rd week, were significantly increased (p<0.05) compared with control group. The weight in each free silica group was markedly increased (p<0.05) at 20th week compared with the same dose of natural coal dust group, while the weight in the same dose group of free silica dust was increased significantly at 20th week compared with at 3rd week. 2) The amount of hydroxyproline were significantly increased (p<0.05) in the natural coal and free silica groups at 20th week compared with the control groups, and in each experimental group instilled the same kind and dose of dust, its amount was markedly increased (p<0.05) at 20th week compared with at 3rd week. And also the hydroxyproline in 30 mg and 50 mg free silica groups increased markedly (p<0.05) at 20th week compared with the natural coal dust of the same dose. 3) The polymorphonuclear leukocytes, fibroblasts and macrophages in interstitium and alveolar space showed the increasing tendency in the free silica group more markedly than in the natural coal dust group. The exudate in alveolar space at 3rd week was disappeared at 20th week, and pneumoconiotic nodules observed microscopically in all experimental groups at 20th week, while the nodules apeared already at 3rd week in the 30 mg and 50 mg free silica dust groups. The significant increase of Hydroxyproline content in lung tissue and pneumoconiotic nodule formation in experimental groups found in this study indicate that the observation period, dust amount and kind of dust is important factors associated with pneumoconiosis. And these findings were generally more severe in free silica dust groups than in natural coal groups.

  • Feeding activites during nestling period of Coal tit (Parus ater) were studied at breeding sites in Mt. Chiri. The average feeding frequency per hour of female Coal tit exceeded that of the male. The average excrement-cleaning frequency per hour of female exceeded that of male, with a longer feed duration. The feeding frequency per hour was generally higher in the morning, and the female exceeded the male in the frquency. It is shown that male of the Coal tit in nestling period played a major role in territorial defense compared with female.

  • Now discusses the potential use and applications of coal bed methane (CBM) in various industries. One of the options for gas monetization is gas to power (GTP), sometimes called gas to wire (GTW). Electric power can be an intermediate product, such as in the case of mineral refining in which electricity is used to refine bauxite into aluminum; or it can be an end product that is distributed into a large utility power grid. For stranded gas, away from the regional markets, the integration of the ammonia and urea plants makes commercial sense. These new applications, if established, could lead to a surge in demand for methanol plants.

  • The stringent air environment conservation act forced to build an indoor dome for coal storage. However, it causes some problems due to accumulation of fly ash and harmful substances inside. To solve this problem, this study analyzed the pattern of internal airflow and the amount of ventilation for an indoor coal yard. Overall, the airflow inside the indoor coal yard tended to move to the southwest facing the mountain. In addition, sea-breeze was blowing from the northern louver window facing the sea, where airflow was flowing in. The total flow rate flowing into the indoor coal yard was 918,691 m3/h, and the number of natural ventilation per hour was 0.6 times. Therefore, it is proposed to install a forced ventilation device at the location where internal air flow is concentrated.

  • This study carried out the density and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and particle size analysis which are the physical characteristics of coal dust by collecting samples of coal dust in the five domestic mines to control the coal dust through ventilation in the workplace for coal mining in the country. This will contribute to a more comfortable working environment by understanding the physical characteristics of the coal dust which is derived from any hard coal produced domestically. In particular, the result of PSA analysis showed that the size of coal dust sample for this study ranged from $0.007{\sim}88.614{\mu}m$ were the particles less than $3.5{\mu}m$, the size range responsible for pneumoconiosis. To observe the flow of coal dust collected on the wind speed, the fallout of coal dust produced by the wind tunnel for the wind was measured and the particle size analysis of coal dust fallout was carried out. In addition, airborne dust is measured according to the mine velocity by using a multi-stage Anderson sampler in the mine where fine dust is generated in a large amount and the wind speed is found out to control the coal dust below $3.5{\mu}m$. In addition, natural ventilation pressure of A mine was calculated to prevent over design of the main fan.

  • It can be obtained from hydrocarbon and water, specially production of hydrogen from natural gas is most commercial and economical process among the hydrogen production methods, and has been used widely. However, conventional hydrogen production methods are dependent on fossil fuel such as natural gas and coal, and it may be faced with problems such as exhaustion of fossil fuels, production of greenhouse gas and increase of feedstock price. Thermochemical hydrogen production by nuclear energy has potential to efficiently produce large quantities of hydrogen without producing greenhouse gases. However, nuclear hydrogen must be economical comparing with conventional hydrogen production method. Therefore, hydrogen production cost was analyzed and estimated for nuclear hydrogen as well as conventional hydrogen production such as natural gas reforming and coal gasification in various range.
