  • Conjugate heat transfer (CHT) is the simultaneous, coupled heat transfer within a fluid and an adjoining solid, and the interface treatment plays an important role in its analysis, particularly when using unstructured grid system. In the present paper a new solid-fluid interface treatment in CHT analysis is presented and applied to two typical CHT problems, i.e. natural convections in both concentric thick-walled cylinders and cavity with a centered solid body. The present interface treatment for unstructured mesh clearly demonstrates the same accuracy and robustness as that for typical structured mesh.

  • Natural convection in annuli between the horizontal and vertical concentric cylinders for ratio of the inner to the outer radius, $R_1$=0.85, 0.35 has been studied by the numerical analysis. Governing equations are numerically sloved by means of Successive over-relaxation methods. It is found that maximum local Nusselt number, $Nu_{1.max}$ at the inner cylinder and $Nu_{2.max}$ at the outer cylinder for $R_2$=0.35 have maxima at ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$, ${\phi}=180^{\circ}$ ${\xi}=0.4$, 1.6 for horizontal cylinder and at bottom, top for vertical cylinder, respectively. In the present study, mean Nusselt numbers at the vertical cylinder increased more than that at the horizontal cylinder by about 64% for $R_1$=0.35.

  • The heat loss of a building within a wind flow field results from convection and natural ventilation. Loss from natural ventilation is much more than one from convection, and the former depends mostly on the pressure distribution at the building surface. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to calculate the pressure distribution and investigate flow phenomena, around the building with a rectangular shape in a two-dimensional turbulent flow field. The finite difference method, modelled upon the turbulence $k-\epsilon$ model, has been applied to the analysis. The results, followed by the changes of Reynolds numbers, inlet flow conditions, and building shapes, have been also obtained, respectively. Various results of the present numerical analysis coincide qualitatively well with earlier reported empirical results.

  • A numerical study has been conducted on the combined radiation-natural convection heat transfer characteristics in a square cavity with a selectively transparent wall. The fluid in the cavity is assumed to be transparent to the thermal radiation. The effect of the wall emissivity is mainly considered in view of the temperature and flow fields. The comparison of the radiative heat flux and conductive heat flux variations along the isothermal wall is presented as well. The results show that the Nusselt number distribution is fairly uniform due to the com-pensative interaction of the radiation and convection heat transfer.

  • With the improvement of living standards, the ventilation for the mitigation of indoor or outdoor air-pollution problems has recently attracted a lot of attention. Consequently, the ventilation for the supply of outdoor fresh air into a room is treated as an important building-design factor. The ventilation is generally divided into the forced and natural types; here, the former can control the ventilation rate by using mechanical devices, but it has the disadvantages of the equipment costs, maintenance costs, and noise generation, while the latter is applied to most workshops due to the absence of noise and the low installation and maintenance costs. In this experimental study, the ventilation performance of a typical rotating-type natural ventilator, which is called a "wind turbine," was investigated with the outdoor-wind velocity and the indoor/outdoor-temperature difference. From the experiment results, it was confirmed that the temperature difference of $10^{\circ}C$ corresponds to the ventilation driving force with an outdoor-wind velocity of 1.0 m/s. Additionally, the intake-opening area of a building also exerts a great effect on the ventilation rates.

  • Experimental study was made to find the effective ways for cooling of engine room in a power car through natural ventilation, forced ventilation and wind tunnel test of 1:10 model. Through the measurements of inner temperature of engine room and pressure distribution of model surface for the various opening combinations and the fan locations, the following results are obtained. For natural ventilation, side and top opening combination is more effective than the side openings only and optimal opening combination is all side openings with top center opening. For forced ventilation with fan on the roof, the combination of all sides and top opening is more effective than the combination of side and top opening, and the optimal location of fan is top center. When the model is located in the air stream, the combination of side and top opening is more effective than the side openings only, and the optimal location of top opening is the front opening. With both air stream and forced ventilation, the optimal location of fan is the side region, and the direction of side grill installation is found to have negligible effect on the room ventilation.

  • A numerical study for performance analysis of a counterflow type forced draft tower and natural draft cooling tower has been performed based on the method using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal body fitted and non-staggered grid system. For solving the coupling problem between water and air, air enthalpy balance, moisture fraction balance, water enthalpy balance, and water mass balance equations are solved with Navier-Stoke’s equations simultaneously. For the effect of turbulence, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is implied in this analysis. The predicted result of the present analysis is compared with the experimental data and the commercial software result to validate the present study, The predicted results show good agreement with the experimental data and the commercial software result. To investigate the influence of the cooling tower design parameters such as approach, range and wet bulb temperature, parametric studies are also peformed.

  • From Feb. 2006, the ventilating systems with air exchange rate of over 0.7times/hour are installed at the apartment houses (over 100 units). Installation cost and maintenance cost are very important factors for ventilating system because consumers have to pay the expenses of that system. Especially small apartment needs more considerations because small apartment is comparatively the economically weak part. The purpose of this study is to the performance evaluation of the hybrid ventilation system for small apartment houses. Hybrid system 1 consists of natural ventilation system and duct type exhaust diffusers. Hybrid system 2 has natural ventilation system and toilet exhaust system with static pressure fan. Infiltration of test apartment houses with ventilation system is under 0.1 times/hour. Mean air age of hybrid system 1 is 1.52 hours and hybrid system 2 is 1.42 hours. Mean ventilation effectiveness of hybrid system 2(93%) is higher than that of hybrid system 1(81%).

  • An oscillatory motion of natural convection in a two-dimensional square enclosure fitted with a horizontal partition is investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and a partition was positioned perpendicularly at the mid-height of one vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations were carried out with the variations of the partition length and Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). As the results, an oscillatory motion of natural convection has perfectly shown the periodicity with the decrease of Rayleigh number, and the stability was reduced to a chaotic state with the increase of Rayleigh number. The period of oscillation gets shorten with the decrease of the partition length and the increase of Rayleigh number. The frequency of oscillation obtained by the variations of stream function is more similar to the experimental results than that of the average Nusselt number. The stability of oscillation grows worse with the increase of Rayleigh number. The transition Rayleigh number for the chaos is gradually decreased with the increase of the partition length.

  • This study investigated the effect of variation in the angle of the elliptic cylinder as well as the presence of circular cylinder on natural convection inside a square enclosure. The Rayleigh number was varied between $10^3$ and $10^6$, and the Prandtl number was fixed to 0.7. In the present study, the angle of the elliptic cylinder was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$, and the perimeter of the elliptic cylinder was same as that of the circular cylinder. The immersed boundary method was used to capture the virtual wall boundary of the inner cylinder. With the increasing angle of the elliptic cylinder, the surface-averaged Nusselt numbers on the cylinder and the enclosure increased. In the Rayleigh number range considered in the present study, the surface-averaged Nusselt number on the elliptic cylinder over = $45^{\circ}$ was higher than that of the circular cylinder. The effect of elliptic cylinder's angle on natural convection in the enclosure was analyzed according to the flow and thermal fields, and the distributions of the Nusselt number.
