  • Modified version of subspace iteration method using accelerated starting vectors is proposed to efficiently calculate free vibration modes of structures. Proposed method employs accelerated Lanczos starting vectors that can reduce the number of iterations in the subspace iteration method. Proposed method is more efficient than the conventional method when the number of required modes is relatively small. To verify the efficiency of proposed method, two numerical examples are presented.

  • A new formulation of the MNDIF method is introduced to extract highly accurate natural frequencies of concave plates with arbitrary shape. Originally, the MNDIF method cannot yield accurate natural frequencies for concave plates. To overcome this weak point, a new approach of dividing a concave plate into two convex domains is proposed and the validity and accuracy is shown in a verification example.

  • A modeling method for the dynamic characteristic analysis of a translationally accelerated trapezoidal cantilever plate is presented in this paper. The equations of motion for the plate are derived and transformed into a dimensionless form. The effects of the inclination angles and the acceleration on the vibration characteristics of the plate are investigated. Incidentally, natural frequency loci veering and associated mode shape variations are observed and discussed.

  • The analytical and experimental studies on aerodynamic flutter instability of rotating disks in information storage devices are investigated. The theoretical analysis uses a fluid-structure model where the aerodynamic force on the rotating disk is represented in terms of lift and damping forces. Based on the analytical approach, it is shown that the backward natural frequency of the disk is equal to that of the case without aerodynamic effect at the flutter onset speed. In post-flutter regions, the natural frequencies are larger than those in vacuum conditions without aerodynamic effect. The analytical predictions on the natural frequencies of rotating disks with/without aerodynamic effect are experimentally verified using a vacuum chamber and ASMO optical disks.

  • This research proposes a finite element method to determine the natural vibration characteristics of the spinning disk-spindle system in a HDD including the flexibility of supporting structure. Finite element equations of each substructure are derived with the introduction of consistent variables to satisfy the geometric compatibility at the internal boundaries. The natural frequencies and modes from the global asymmetric matrix equations of motion are determined by using the implicit restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by the experimental modal testing. It also shows that the flexibility of base plate plays an important role to determine the natural frequencies of the spinning disk-spindle system in a HDD.

  • Conical horn is used in many high frequency ultrasonic horns, to achieve a longitudinal vibration mode across a wide ultrasonic tool horn output surface. Modal analysis is method for designing tuned ultrasonic tool horn and for the prediction natural frequency of ultrasonic tool horn vibration mode. The design of ultrasonic horn is based on prototype estimate obtained by FEM analysis. The FEM simulated ultrasonic tool horn is built and characterized experimentally through laser vibrometer and electrical impedance analysis. In this paper, FEM analysis is developed to predict the natural frequency of ultrasonic tool horn and use of in the optimal design of ultrasonic horn shape.

  • This paper highlights a study undertaken on the free vibration of a precast steel-concrete composite slab panel for track support. The steel-concrete composite slab track is an evolvement from the slab track, a form of ballastless track which is becoming increasingly attractive to asset owners as they seek to reduce lifecycle costs and deal with increasing rail traffic speeds. The slender nature of the slab panel due to its reduced depth of construction makes it susceptible to vibration problems. The aim of the study is driven by the need to address the limited research available to date on the dynamic behaviour of steel-concrete composite slab panels for track support. Free vibration analysis of the track slab has been carried out using ABAQUS. Both eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes have been extracted using the Lanczos method. The fundamental natural frequencies of the slab panel have been identified together with corresponding mode shapes. To investigate the sensitivity of the natural frequencies and mode shapes, parametric studies have been established, considering concrete strength and mass and steel's modulus of elasticity. This study is the world first to observe crossover phenomena that result in the inversion of the natural orders without interaction. It also reveals that replacement of the steel with aluminium or carbon fibre sheeting can only marginally reduce the natural frequencies of the slab panel.

  • For this study, the multi-degree of freedom analysis model of torsional vibration was developed. This model is combined with mass moment of inertia and torsional spring in two wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicle. We compared and analyzed torsional vibration characteristics by natural frequencies and mode shapes which are obtained by free vibration analysis of this model. And we studied torsional vibration contribution of driveline elements by performing the forced vibration analysis of engine excitation torque. The validity of this model is demonstrated by the field test. The reduction effect of the torsional vibration along the driveline design factor is presented by the analytical results.

  • A Simplified Finite Element Method(FEM) model has been developed for the Exhaust System. For the verification of the usage of the developed model. Natural Frequencies, Mode Shapes and Frequency Response Function have been compared between numerical analysis and experimental result. It shows that the developed numerical model also can be utilized to prove the Stress distribution of the Exhaust System if it can be adopted for the vibration analysis adequately.
