  • The efficiency of the OECD MITI(I) test which is designated as a standard method for measuring the biodegradability of chemicals by the Korean Ministry of Environment was evaluated and compared with those of two other OECD ready biodegradability tests: the manometric respirometry test and the closed bottle test. All the tests were applicable to a wide variety of organic chemicals and there were no significant differences in biodegradation rates of eight test chemicals and a reference chemical with three methods. However, the MITI(I) test had unnecessary expense and complexity in preparation of a mixed inoculum. Decrease in bacterial diversity during pre-conditioning of the inoculum for 1 month was observed and therefore the mixed inoculum did not ensure the presence of a variety of species in the test. Based on the simplicity, cost-effectiveness and reproducibility of the test procedure, it is considered that the manometric respirometry test is the most adequate method which can replace the MITI(I) test method.

  • In this research, we analyse the economic feasibility of a tidal power plant project which can efficiently generate mass, permanent, predictable, and homogeneous electric power. For the economic feasibility analysis, we used the RETScreen that is developed at the CANMET Energy Technology Center in Natural Resources Canada and widely utilized for analysing the economic feasibility and sensitivity of clean energy projects. Results from the feasibility and sensitivity analysis showd that the tidal power plant project in Korea has a enough economic feasibility, and its feasibility increases more as certified emission reductions price and electricity unit price increase. Based on the results from the feasibility study, we can solve the energy problems to be come in near future by constructing the tidal power plants in Korea more aggressively.

  • Coastal structures are functioning in complex natural phenomena such as wave, tide, seawater penetration and abrasion. So the behavior of the coastal structures material is important, because coastal structure material is directly linked to stability of the coastal structures. For this reason, to determine the behaviour characteristics, material design standard is required on the coastal structure under sea wave load. Especially, identification on the behavior of the coastal structure has not been investigated yet properly considering interaction structure and sea wave load. In this study, to identify the behaviour characteristics of the coastal structure caused by waves, the behavior of the coastal structure depending on the magnitude of the wave loads was intensively analyzed.

  • Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder which affects millions of population worldwide. Global estimates published in 2010 reported the world diabetic prevalence as 6.4%, affecting 285 million adults. Foot ulceration and wound infection are major forms of disabilities arising from diabetic diseases. This study was aimed to develop a natural antimicrobial finishing on medical grade textile that meets American Association of Textiles Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) standard. The textile samples were finished with the ethanolic extract of Penicillium amestolkiae elv609, an endophytic fungus isolated from Orthosiphon stamineus Benth (common name: cat's whiskers). Endophyte is defined as microorganism that reside in the living plant tissue, without causing apparent disease symptom to the host. The antimicrobial efficacy of the ethanolic extract of P. minioluteum was tested on clinical pathogens isolated from diabetic wound. The extract exhibited significant inhibitory activity against 4 bacteria and 1 yeast with the minimal inhibitory concentration ranged from 6.25 to 12.5 mg/mL. The results indicate different susceptibility levels of the test microorganism to the ethanolic extract. However, the killing activity of the extract was concentration-dependent. The finished medical textile showed excellent antimicrobial efficacy on AATCC test assays. All the microbial cultures treated with the textile sample displayed a growth reduction of 99.9% on Hoheinstein Challenge Test. The wash durability of the finished textile was found good even after 50 washes with commercial detergent. Besides, the gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed that 6-octadecenoic acid and diethyl phthalate were the main bioactive constituents of the extract. In conclusion, the developed medical textile showed good antimicrobial efficacy on laboratory tests. This work can be extended to in vivo trials for developing healthcare textile products for antimicrobial applications.

  • This paper investigates the effects of fuel groupings in the coupled internals and core model on the internals and fuel responses due to pipe breaks. The 177 fuel assemblies for Korean standard nuclear power plant are grouped into several stick models and the responses of internals components are calculated. The analysis results show that the fuel model groupings in the coupled internals and core model have no significant effects on the internals and fuel responses for pipe break excitation. Also, in order to determine the feasibility of constructing a single equivalent stick representation of In or more adjacent fuel bundles, the reduced models, each of which employs a different stiffness lumping rule, are constructed. It is shown that the equivalent stiffness calculated to get the first natural frequency of the original model while preserving net gap between grouping centers gives the minimum modelling error.

  • According to Electronic Times(2012. 1. 3), "PMO was introduced from 1950s in the USA and as of 2010, PMO participated in 84% of project ordered by public and private sector." And Ministry of public administration and security announced that the Ministry will organize Task Force for arranging "standard for introduction and operation of PMO" for support of project implementation and strengthening specialty of ordering organization, and then, actively launch the Task Force from February, 2012. Thus, necessity of PMO is regarded as natural in some aspect but thesis for doctoral degree written by Kim Gi-yeong(2007) suggested, "performance of several projects begun at the same time cannot be interpreted as high according to whether PMO team exists or not." Martin et al.(2005) asserted, "according to whether PMO team exists or not, but there is no significant difference in other factor." In the contradictory situation, it is necessary to perform more various approaches for performance and necessity of PMO in the academic aspect.

  • In the present study, the antioxidative and inhibitory activity of Zingiber officinale Rosc. Rhizomes-derived materials (on mushroom tyrosinase) were evaluated. The bioactive co mponents of Z. officinale rhizomes were characterized by spectroscopic analysis as zingerone and dehydrozingerone, which exhibited potent antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition activities. A series of substituted dehydrozingerones [(E)-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-ones] were prepared in admirable yields by the reaction of appropriate benzaldehydes with acetone and the products were evaluated in terms of variation in the dehydrozingerone structure. The synthetic analogues were examined for their antioxidant and antityrosinase activities to probe the most potent analogue. Compound 26 inhibited Fe$^{2+}$-induced lipid peroxidation in rat brain homogenate with an IC$_{50}$ = 6.3${\pm}$0.4 ${\mu}$M. In the 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical quencher assay, compounds 2, 7, 17, 26, 28, and 29 showed radical scavenging activity equal to or higher than those of the standard antioxidants, like ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and ascorbic acid. Compound 27 displayed superior inhibition of tyrosinase activity relative to other examined analogues. Compounds 2, 17, and 26 exhibited non-competitive inhibition against oxidation of 3,4- dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). From the present study, it was observed that both number and position of hydroxyl groups on aromatic ring and a double bond between C-3 and C-4 played a critical role in exerting the antioxidant and antityrosinase activity.

  • The drag reduction agency (DRA) for gas pipeline, a novel method used for reducing friction or drag on a gas flowing to increase the transmission efficiency of gas pipeline, is a more flexible and economical technology than internal flow efficient coatings. In this paper, an effective DRA has been developed in Authors' Institute by analyzing the hydrodynamic friction resistance on internal gas pipeline and then studying the work mechanism and molecular structure of DRA. In the meantime, a group of property test for selecting DRA material has been determined, including viscosity, contact angle, volatility, corrosion, slab extending, and flow behavior in horizontal tube. The inhibition efficiency and drag reduction efficiency of the developed DRA have been investigated finally based on the relevant test methods. Results of corrosion test show that the developed DRA has very good inhibition effect on mild steel by brushing a thin layer of DRA on steel specimens, giving inhibition efficiency of 91.2% and 73.1% in 3%NaCl solution and standard salt fog environment respectively. Results of drag-reducing test also show that the Colebrook formula could be used to calculate friction factors on internal pipes with DRA as the Reynolds number is in the range of $0.75\times10^5\sim2.0\times10^5$. By comparing with normal industrial pipes, the friction resistance coefficient of the steel pipe with DRA on internal wall decreases by 13% and the gas flux increases by 7.3% in testing condition with Reynolds number of $2.0\times10^5$.

  • Wideband speech, characterized by a bandwidth of 50∼7000 ㎐, sounds more natural and intelligible, and is less tiring to listen to when compared to narrowband speech characterized by a bandwidth of 300∼3400 ㎐. Wideband speech coders, however, have not been as successful as the narrowband speech coders because of their higher bit rate. In this paper, we propose a new wideband speech coder which combines the European standard of a narrowband speech coder, i.e., GSM-EFR, and a transform coder using the discrete wavelet transform. The proposed wideband speech coder operates as follows input speech is first split into two subbands with equal bandwidth and the two subband signals are coded and decoded by each subband coder. A GSM-EFR is adopted as a lower subband coder and a subband coder with wavelet transformed speech is designed for a upper subband coder. The total bit rate of the proposed coder is 18.9kbps (12.2 kbps for lower band coder and 6.7 kbps for upper band coder), and informal listening test results have shown that the proposed coder has comparable speech quality to that of G.722 with 56 kbps.

  • The selective separation and the quantitative recovery of uranium from Korean monazite sand have been studied by anion-exchange chromatography. It has been shown that method of anion-exchange chromatography under controlled conditions of elution can be applied to the production of relatively high purity of Uranium Oxide from monazite sand. Under the optimum separation conditions, the recoveries from standard sample were up to 99.3% as $U_3O_8$ on sulfate form anion resin bed and 99.2% as $U_2O_3{\cdot}P_2O_7$ on phosphate form anion resin bed. The possibility of recovering uranium from the monazite sulfate solution using a strong base anion exchange resin-Amberlite IRA-900. Uranium was successfully recovered about 92 percent. Phosphate ion did not seem to interfere with the process.
