  • Arsenic which is found in several different chemical forms and oxidation states and causes acute and chronic adverse health effects is a toxic trace element widely distributed in soils and aquifers from both geologic and anthropogenic sources. Arsenic which has a mysterious ability to change color, behavior, reactivity, and toxicity has diverse chemical behavior in the natural environment. Arsenic which has stronger ability to readily change oxidation state than nitrogen and phosphorus due to a consequence of the electronic configuration of its valence orbitals with partially filled states capable of both electron donation and acceptance although the electronegativity of arsenic is greater than that of nitrogen and similar to that of phosphorus. Arsenate (V) is the thermodynamically stable form of As under aerobic condition and interacts strongly with solid matrix. However, it has been known that adsorption and oxidation reactions of arsenite (III) which is more soluble and mobile than As(V) in soils are two important factors affecting the fate and transport of arsenic in the environment. That is, the movement of As in soils and aquifers is highly dependent on the adsorption-desorption reactions in the solid phase. This article, however, focuses primarily on understanding the fate and speciation of As in soils and what fate arsenic will have after it is incorporated into soils.

  • This study aimed to suggest a 1300 scale of a middle school foodservice facility floor plan which was compliant to the principle of HACCP, as well as ensuring food and work safety, and the flow of personnel and food materials. which consisted of 46 nutrition teachers and 6 experts, responded with a questionnaire on the relationship of functional area and space. Using their opinions, key principles for the design of the facility were single direction movement of food materials, customers and workers; minimization of the cross-contamination through the separation of functional space; and securement of customer-focused efficiency; staff-centered convenience and efficiency; and work and food safety. After the completion of an adjacency diagram, bubble diagram and program statement, the functional areas of a 1300 scale middle school food-service facility were allocated as follows: $9.9\;m^2$ for the receiving area, $56.1\;m^2$ for the pre-preparation area, $10.5\;m^2$ for the food storage area, $6.0\;m^2$ for the supplies storage area, $97.8\;m^2$ for the cooking area, $33.6\;m^2$ for the service area, $52.5\;m^2$ for dish washing area, cafeteria $410.5\;m^2$, $4.5\;m^2$ for the front room, for a total of $725.8\;m^2$. Expert groups have pointed to limitations within this model as there are no windows in the office for the influx of fresh outside air and a need for the straight line installation of steam-jacket and frying kettles on the sides of windows. This study can be useful as the guidelines for estimating the investment cost of the facility and placing the placement of functional areas and equipment in the renovation of the facility. It can be also useful data for a methodology of foodservice facility design.

  • In Japan, geophysical exploration methods have been widely applied to civil engineering and construction fields for a long time. In particular, seismic refraction has long played a significant role in geotechnical site investigations for tunnels, dams and landslides. However, our growing interest on the social and natural environment makes the methods available and its application fields diversify. Digital technologies such as personal computer have revolutionized our ability to acquire large volumes of data rapidly, and to produce more reliable results for subsurface image. Also, color graphics easily visualizes survey results In a more understandable manner, These days geophysical methods are essential to assessing grouting effects, predicting the front of tunnel cutting face, monitoring the movement, pollution and purification process of groundwater. Now three-dimensional exploration techniques have developed for the site characterization in civil engineering and construction needs.

  • The importance of NPC's role in computer games is increasing. An NPC must perform its tasks by perceiving obstacles and other characters and by moving through them. It has been proposed to plan a natural-looking path against fixed obstacles by using a generalized visibility graph. In this paper we develop the execution module for an NPC to move efficiently along the path planned on the generalized visibility graph. The planned path consists of line segments and arc segments, so we define steering behaviors such as linear behaviors, circular behaviors, and an arriving behavior for NPC's movements to be realistic and utilize them during execution. The execution module also includes the collision detection capability to be able to detect dynamic obstacles and uses a decision tree to react differently according to the detected obstacles. The execution module is tested through the simulation based on the example scenario in which an NPC interferes the other moving NPC.

  • Recently the natural damage associated with flood disaster has been dramatically increased. Especially, inundation in the urban area causes serious damage to people and assets because of the concentration of infrastructure and population growth. The purpose of this study is to develop a new urban inundation model combining a storm sewer system model and a 2D overland-flow model for the estimation inundation depth In urban area caused by the surcharge of storm sewers. The movement of water in the studied urban watershed is characterized by two components, namely, the storm sewer flow component and the surcharge-induced inundation component. The model was applied to Goonja and Jangan catchments. Inundated depths were presented to demonstrate model simulation results. The simulation results can help the authority decide preventing flood damages by redesigning and enlarging the capacities of storm sewer systems in the inundation-prone areas. The model can also be applied to make the potential inundation area map and establish flood-mitigation measures as a part of the decision support system for flood control authority.

  • The casualties due to slope failures such as landslide, rock fall, debris flow etc. are about 24% in total casualties caused by natural disasters for the last 10 years. And these slope failures are focused in the season in which typhoon and torrential rain take place. Not much attention, however, have been put into landslide mitigation research. Meanwhile, USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) forms the self-organization network, and transfers the information among sensor nodes that have computing technology ability. Accordingly, USN is embossed a social point technology. The objective of this paper is to develop a prototype system for slope failure monitoring using USN technology. For this we develop module that collects and change slope movement data measured by two tiltermeter and a tension wire, store transferred data in database. Also we develop application program that can easily analyze the data. We apply the prototype system to a test site at KICT for testing and analyzing the system's performance.

  • This paper presents a low-cost robotic device for shoulder rehabilitation, which is capable of treating various shoulder disabilities. A 3-DOF passive shoulder joint tracking module was designed to allow for translational motion of the shoulder joint center during arm swing, which is essential for natural shoulder movement. The weight of the user's arm and the device were compensated for by springs, to enable gravity-free shoulder motion. In order to reduce the device's cost, only one actuator was used, which can be aligned with the user's shoulder joint in various orientations. The device is capable of implementing five representative shoulder motions, including flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, horizontal abd/adduction, internal/external rotation, and oblique raise. The proposed low-cost shoulder rehabilitation robot is expected to provide effective rehabilitation for patients with various shoulder impairments.
