Polymerized vesicles were prepared from monomeric cholesterol-containing surfactant. These vesicles were used to extract the free cholesterol. A polymerized vesicle was formed both monomeric cholesterol-containing surfactant and monomeric surfactant containing two alkyl chain(50 : 50 weight ratio). This vesicle got the better extracting capacity compared with the vesicle which got the other weight ratio of the surfactants. This vesicle also exhibited the fastest substrate permeability. These all results showed that considerable vacant room is necessary in polymerized vesicles in order to extract more cholesterols.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the antinociceptive and antiinflammatory effects of the heartwood extract of Rhus verniciflua (Anacardiaceae) and the two major components, sulfuretin and fustin. The MeOH extract, its EtOAc-soluble portion and sulfuretin showed significant antinociceptive activity in writhing and hot plate test assays and antiinflammaory effects in carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats. In particular, treatment of sulfuretin with 10 mg/kg dose (i.p.) reduced writhing frequency by 48.0% (p<0.01) compared to that of a control group. Further, the treatment of sulfuretin (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.) for 7 days prevented the carrageenan-induced hind paw edema significantly (p<0.01). The antiinflammatory effect of sulfuretin was also confirmed by microscopic observation of mast cell numbers in muscle. In addition, sulfuretin suppressed the cyclooxygenase- 2 (COX-2) activity $(IC_{50}\;=\;28.7\;{\mu}M)$ in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophage cells. This result indicates that the inhibitory effect of sulfuretin on COX-2 may be one of the antinociceptive/antiinflammatory mechanism.

Anti-melanogenic effects of amaranth (AT), one of the key source of squalene, were investigated in melanocytes. Amaranth seed powder was extracted with water and melan-a cells were treated with various concentrations of AT. By using HPLC, content of myo-inositol, one of potential active components, was measured in the crude extract of AT.AT reduced the melanin content in melan-a melanocytes and down-regulated melanogenic enzyme activity such as tyrosinase, TRP-1 and TRP-2. By regulating melanogenic enzyme activity, AT may be a potential natural source for whitening agent. Myo-inositol was detected in AT by HPLC and may be one of the active compounds from AT involved in the regulation of anti-melanogenesis. In this study, we demonstrated that AT has anti-melanogenesis properties. This new function of amaranth may be useful in the development of new skin-whitening products and its value as food.

In this paper, we present a novel image operator to extract textual information in natural scene images. First, a powerful refiner called the Stroke Color Extension, which extends the widely used Stroke Width Transform by incorporating color information of strokes, is proposed to achieve significantly enhanced performance on intra-character connection and non-character removal. Second, a character classifier is trained by using gradient features. The classifier not only eliminates non-character components but also remains a large number of characters. Third, an effective extractor called the Character Color Transform combines color information of characters and geometry features. It is used to extract potential characters which are not correctly extracted in previous steps. Fourth, a Convolutional Neural Network model is used to verify text candidates, improving the performance of text detection. The proposed technique is tested on two public datasets, i.e., ICDAR2011 dataset and ICDAR2013 dataset. The experimental results show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of Leonuri Herba extract on the treatment of chromaticity and colorfastness. Leonuri Herba has been used as a Korean medicine for the treatment of woman disease. In the long history of Korea, dyeing has been applied for a means representing the grace of natural and inner esthetic consciousness of man. Vegetable dyes give us such great benefits, diversified color, but no pollution. And ramie fabric has distinctive features such as beautiful brilliance, elegance, and strong durability. So, it is regarded as a special product of Korea traditionally. These studies were carried out to treat with acetate iron, dichloride copper and alum with a mordant to ramie fabric. The ramie fabric was died with Leonuri Herba extract. The results of experiment showed as follows: First, the chromophoric degree was the highest in acetate iron but not distinction in another mordants. Seocond, the light colorfastness was the highest in non treated and dichloride copper, but alum was the lowest. Third, the discoloration was alum and dichloride copper showed first grade in washing colorfastness. Abrasion colorfastness was not significant in this test. According the previous results, Leonuri Herba has an efficiency on woman disease. So it is considered that Leonuri Herba can be applied effectively to a theraphy of climacteric disturbance.
The stems of Dendrobium moniliforme have been used in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of fever and lack of body fluid in Korea. In this study, we investigated anti-inflammatory effects of the aqueous extract of D. moniliforme stems (DM) in response to lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a major constituent of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria. DM inhibited LTA-induced expression of a pro-inflammatory mediator inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the murine macrophages. And DM induced expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) at the transcriptional level. Conversely, the knockdown of HO-1 expression by siRNA markedly reversed the inhibitory effects of DM on LTA-induced iNOS expression. We also demonstrated that nuclear translocation of Nrf2 was increased following treatment with DM. In addition, DM-mediated Nrf2 activation and HO-1 expression were suppressed by PI3K/Akt and p38 inhibitors; treatment with DM also resulted in phosphorylation of Akt and p38. These results suggest that DM inhibits the expression of iNOS in LTA-stimulated macrophages, and that these effects are mediated by the upregulation of HO-1 expression via PI3K/Akt/p38-Nrf2 signaling.
The possibility as an anti-inflammatory drug of Prunus davidiana which have been used in Korean folk medicine for treatment of neuritis and rheumatism was investigated on carrageenin-induced paw edema in rats. The MeOH extract exhibited potent inhibitory effect on carrageenin-edema rats when topically applicated. On the other hand, it did not show any effect when orally tested. It also had no influences on isolated ileum of guinea pig and anti-platelet aggregating activities. Thus, it appears from the present findings that the MeOH extract of P. davidiana may be utilizable only for the external treatment of inflammed sites. This study was also conducted to further isolation of flavonoids from the EtOAc soluble fraction and characterized as persiconin and isosakuranin by spectrometric analysis.
The antioxidant activity of the stem bark from Albizzia julibrissin was evaluated for its potential to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, to inhibit the generation of the hydroxyl radical ($\cdot OH$), total reactive oxygen species (ROS) and to scavenge authentic peroxynitrites ($ONOO^{-}$). The methanol extract of A. julibrissin exhibited strong antioxidant activity in the tested model systems. Therefore, it was further fractionated using several solvents. The antioxidant activity of the individual fractions were in the order of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) > n-butanol (n-BuOH) > dichloromethane ($CH_2 CI-2$) > and water ($H_2O$). The ethyl acetate soluble fraction, which exhibited strong antioxidant activity, was further purified by repeated silicagel, Sephadex LH-20 and RP-18 gel column chromatography. Sulfuretin (1) and 3 ,4 ,7-trihydroxyflavone (2) were isolated as the active principles. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited good activity in all tested model systems. Compound 1 exhibited five times more inhibitory activity on the total ROS than Trolox. Compound 2 showed six times stronger DPPH radical scavenging activity than L-ascorbic acid. These results show the possible antioxidant activity of the A. julibrissin crude extract and its major constituents.
An endophytic bacterial strain was isolated from kimchi, a Korean traditional fermented Brassica campestris and identified as Bacillus subtilis MJMP2 based on the 16S rRNA sequence. This strain showed strong antagonistic activity against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) KACC10331, the pathogen of bacterial rice blight disease, as well as activity against some other rice phytopathogenic fungi. The active compound was purified through size-exclusion chromatography and preparative High-performance liquid chromatography. The molecular weight was determined as m/z 1043 by mass spectroscopy, which is identical to that of iturin A. Furthermore, a crude extract from the culture supernatant of Bacillus subtilis MJMP2 showed inhibitory activity against rice blight disease in both a rice leaf explant assay and a pot assay. The crude extract also enhanced the length of roots of Arabidopsis thaliana. These results suggest that the strain Bacillus subtilis MJMP2 could be used as a biological agent to control rice blight disease.
