  • The numerical study was carried out to effectively cool Induction motor applied to a washing machine. The outer rotor made of steel periodically spins up and down. The stator consists of the thin layered iron plates and copper coil. The effective cooling system is necessary to solve the reliability problem caused by the electric losses at the coil and the iron plate. Because the heat transfer rate of the natural convection in partially open space is generally low, thus it is necessary to enhance the heat transfer using rotating perforated plate. The flow phenomena around the motor are very complex due to the motor geometry and the outer rotor motion. The mixed convection takes place due to the slow rotation speed. The three dimensional flow simulation was performed using rotating reference frame technique and Boussinesq approximation but the radiation effect was neglected. It was found that the angle and direction of the cooling blades play an important role in the stator temperature.

  • Surface reaction occurs at a certain surface temperature when a catalyst is heated up in a reactive mixture. If homogeneous ignition does not occur, a steady state is observed because the heat produced by the surface reaction is balanced with the heat loss caused by convection, conduction and radiation. The present paper treats the effects of pressure on the surface temperature at the steady state. Hydrogen and oxygen are used as reactants and nitrogen as an inert gas. A spherical platinum catalyst of 1.5 mm in diameter is sustained in the chamber with two wires of 0.1 mm in diameter. As results, there exists a maximum steady temperature at a certain relative hydrogen concentration which increases with total pressure. At the steady state, it can be approximated that the heat release is estimated by the mass transfer considering the effect of natural convection. The experimental results are explained qualitatively by the approximation.

  • Heat analysis of the plate type and wave type heat sink were carried out by using computational simulation. The heat resistance and air flow of two heat sink models were analysed according to natural and forced convection condition and positions of fan. When a fan was at the position of z-axis and y-axis in forced convection, the heat resistances of plate type heat sink were $0.17^{\circ}C/W$, and $0.28^{\circ}C/W$ respectively. In the case of wave type heat sink, they were $0.18^{\circ}C/W$ and $0.53^{\circ}C/W$. As the air flow velocities were averagely $0.386\;m/s\~3.269\;m/s$, air flow velocity of plate type heat sink was faster than that of wave type. In this experiment, it was observed that the plate type heat sink showed a good ability of heat radiation comparing with wave type one.

  • A computer simulation was conducted for heat and momentum transfer in a roller kiln. Time-averaged Navier-Stokes equation conjugated with energy balance equation was numerically solved to predict the temperature distribution and fluid flow field in the roller kiln. A computer simulation was performed for a roller kiln for three cases. Firstly, when there are no ceramic materials in the roller kiln, the effect of natural convection was studied on the temperature distribution and fluid flow field. From the result, it was observed that air takes the heat of wall away from the roller kiln by natural convection and the heat was not transferred effectively. Secondly, with ceramic materials temperature difference of ceramic material from the borrom to the top of a ceramic material was about 255K in 5th zone and this is because the heat is transferred from the surface of a ceramic material to flowing air with relatively low temperature. Finally, we considered effect of radiation heat transfer. Temperature difference of ceramic material in 5th zone was about 300 K, due to radiation heat transfer on the ceramic material surfaces.

  • This paper presents a Finite Element Method (FEM) application to thermal study of natural three layers of human dermal parts of varying properties. This paper carries out investigation of temperature distributions in these layers namely epidermis, dermis and under lying tissue layer. It is assumed that the outer skin is exposed to atmosphere and the loss of heat due to convection, radiation and evaporation of water have also been taken into account. The computations are carried out for one dimensional unsteady state case and the shape functions in dermal parts have been considered to be quadratic. A Finite Element scheme that uses the Crank-Nicolson method is used to solve the problem and the results computed have been exhibited graphically.

  • The boiler structure is determined by combustion characteristics and construction costs in the combustion chamber of a large commercial boiler. The heat transfer in boiler is composed of the radiation and the convection. The convective heat transfer has happened to back-pass heating surface. The combustion gas sequentially passes through the reheater tube, 1st economizer tube, and 2nd economizer tube. In case of being lowered in boiler height, we have to install additional tube bundle in back-pass heating surface for increasing the heat transfer of boiler, which causes the noise and vibration from combustion gas. When the combustion gas passes through the back-pass tube bundle in specified load of commercial boiler, this paper analyzes the acoustic characteristics between vortex-shedding frequency and natural frequency in tube bundle cavity. The case study reduce the resonance by changing natural frequency characteristics of tube-bundle cavity using a way to install ant-noise baffle in the direction of combustion gas flow.

  • A numerical investigation has been performed to discuss the radiation-affected steady-laminar natural convection in an enclosure under a large temperature difference. Due to inherent nature of this study, the Boussinesq approximation is no longer valid. Therefore the radiating fluid in an enclosure is treated as a ideal gas. To examine the effects of thermal radiation on thermo-fluid dynamic behaviors in complex geometries, two incomplete partitions are introduced. Based on the results of this study, the dispositions of incomplete partitions with radiatively participating medium are found to incur a distinct difference in fluid-dynamic as well as thermal behavior.

  • The heat transfer over a radial heat sink, adapted for LED (light emitting diode) downlights, was experimentally and analytically investigated. We added radiation heat transfer into a previous calculation that neglected this factor. The numerical results agreed well with experimental results. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effects of the geometric parameters (fin length, fin height, ideal number of fins) and the operating parameter (heat flux) on the average heat-sink temperature from the heat-sink array. We found the fin length that maximizes the heattransfer performance. As the emissivity increased, the effect of geometric parameters on the radiation heat transfer decreased.

  • Ignition characteristics of a vertical solid fuel plate with block have been investigated experimentally. For low radiant heat flux, ignition does not occur in a vertical solid fuel plate without block. In the case with the block on a vertical fuel plate, however, ignition can occur by increasing the residence time and the time to absorb the incident radiation flux by fuel vapor in gas phase. The ignition occurs below block and the point varies according to the block location and the block height. As the block height increases, the block locates at higher position, and the hot wall temperature increases, the ignition delay time decreases. Also as the initial temperature of fuel plate rises, the ignition delay time of the solid fuel plate decreases. The temperature distribution of solid fuel plate with block is nearly proportional to the radiant heat flux distribution. Therefore, the effect temperature by natural convection heat transfer is of the same order as that of inhibition of temperature increase by pyrolysis.

  • An assessment for determining N-16 activity concentrations during the operation condition of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission TRIGA Research Reactor was performed employing several governing equations. The radionuclide N-16 is a high energy (6.13 MeV) gamma emitter which is predominately created by the fast neutron interaction with O-16 present in the reactor core water. During reactor operation at different power level, the concentration of N-16 at the reactor bay region may increase causing radiation risk to the reactor operating personnel or the general public. Concerning the safety of the research reactor, the present study deals with the estimation of N-16 activity concentrations in the regions of reactor core, reactor tank, and reactor bay at different reactor power levels under natural convection cooling mode. The estimated N-16 activity concentration values with 500 kW reactor power at the reactor core region was $7.40{\times}10^5Bq/cm^3$ and at the bay region was $3.39{\times}10^5Bq/cm^3$. At 3 MW reactor power with active forced convection cooling mode, the N-16 activity concentration in the decay tank exit water was also determined, and the value was $4.14{\times}10^{-1}Bq/cm^3$.
