  • The successful launch of Arirang satellites allow the acquisition of high resolution satellite imagery of Korean territory and enables the transition from the conventional cultivation area survey method to new image based methods adopted in advanced nations. In this study, we suggested reasonable sizes of the primary sampling unit and the secondary sampling unit for the satellite imagery based sampling design in 8 provinces preselected for this research. The PSU size was determined mainly in consideration of intracorrelation that shows the degree of homogeneity within each cluster and the efficiency of the image process. For the SSU size, we considered the relative standard error and the differences between the land cover maps produced by the Ministry of Environment and the satellite imagery processed by the National Statistical Office.

  • Poisson regression and negative binomial regression are usually used to analyze counting data; however, these models are unsuitable for fit zero-inflated data that contain unexpected zero-valued observations. In this paper, we review the zero-inflated regression in which Bernoulli process and the counting process are hierarchically mixed. It is known that zero-inflated regression can efficiently model the over-dispersion problem. Vuong statistic is employed to compare performances of the zero-inflated models with other standard models.

  • We construct a procedure to test the stochastic order of two samples of interval-valued data. We propose a test statistic that belongs to a U-statistic and derive its asymptotic distribution under the null hypothesis. We compare the performance of the newly proposed method with the existing one-sided bivariate Kolmogorov-Smirnov test using real data and simulated data.

  • Objective : This study aims to review the current status and problems of Korean Medicine and attempts to come up with the means to present a comprehensive and effective set of statistical data. Methods : We have analyzed the current statistics and tried to show how to establish an effective system to gather and organize statistics related to Korean Medicine, including national surveys by the Ministry of Health and Welfare or other relevant insititutions. Results : The existing statistics in Korean Medicine were established not as a result of national demand based on comprehensive analysis but due to the demand of the government ministries such as the Ministry of Health and Welfare or other relevant institutions. Thus, the statistics have been revealed to possess limitations such as a lack of systemization and consistency. In addition, the statistics analyze only the current industrial status of Korean Medicine, and as a result the information in unable to show systematic data for innovation, which is indispensable for the advancement and development of the Korean Medicine industry. Conclusion : To improve the statistical data in Korean Medicine, the statistics need to get over not only the level of management or regulation in Korean Medicine, but also the production of fragmentary statistics. It has to ultimately reflect the innovative activities in Korean Medicine nationally, and show what we need to advance and develop the industry.

  • In this paper, we suggest and implement an on-line survey and analysis system based on the database structure. We can do trends analysis in this system and reduce the number of function because we can treat basic algorithms on the database.

  • A climate-impact projection usually consists of several stages, and the uncertainty of the projection is known to be quite large. It is necessary to assess how much each stage contributed to the uncertainty. We call an uncertainty quantification method in which relative contribution of each stage can be evaluated as uncertainty decomposition. We propose a new Bayesian model for uncertainty decomposition in climate change impact assessments. The proposed Bayesian model can incorporate uncertainty of natural variability and utilize data in control period. We provide a simple and efficient Gibbs sampling algorithm using the auxiliary variable technique. We compare the proposed method with other existing uncertainty decomposition methods by analyzing streamflow data for Yongdam Dam basin located at Geum River in South Korea.

  • In the current analysis, we examine news coverage data widely used in media studies. News coverage data is usually time series data to capture the volume or the tone of the news media's coverage of a topic. We first describe the distributional properties of autoregressive conditionally heteroscadestic(ARCH) effects and compare two major American newspaper's coverage of U.S.-North Korea relations. Subsequently, we propose a change point detection model and apply it to the detection of major change points in the tone of American newspaper coverage of U.S.-North Korea relations.

  • The popularity of data science, influenced by the trends from the United States around 2010, has significantly impacted the education of various statistics departments at domestic universities. However, it is challenging to find research papers in domestic academic journals that address the efficient teaching of data science topics in relation to computing environment. This article will discuss and propose the establishment of a suitable computing infrastructure for the education and research in statistics and data science departments in domestic universities.
