  • This study aims to analyze how the history of mathematics is used in Chinese mathematics textbooks. As a framework for analysis, we categorized nine types of using the history of mathematics in textbooks. We analyzed 18 mathematics textbooks for Chinese elementary and middle schools. As a result, we found that various types of using the history of mathematics were adopted in Chinese textbooks except for explorations of mathematical errors in history. We also noticed three characteristics: preference to using for motivation and reading matters in elementary school levels, high frequencies of using problems from traditional mathematical books and origins of mathematical concepts or symbols, and emphasis on ethnic superiority through the Chinese traditional mathematics. Based on the results of analysis, we discussed and induced some implications for using the history in our mathematics textbooks.

  • The relationship between past liver disease history and the risk of primary liver cancer was analyzed in a hospital-based case-control study conducted in Seoul on 165 patients with histologically or serologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma and individually age- and sex-matched 165 controls in hospital for ophthalmologic, otologic, or nasopharyngeal problems. Significant association were observed for liver deseases occurring 5 or more years before liver cancer diagnosis [OR,4.9;95% confidence interval (CI), $1.6{\sim}14.0$) and family history of liver disease(OR, 9.0;95% CI, $2.1{\sim}38.8$). These associations were not appreciably modified by allowance for major identified potential confounding factors. From these results, it is possible to speculate that liver cell injuries caused by various factors might be a common pathway to developing primary liver carcinoma. Considering the significant effect of family history of liver diseases on PLCA risk after adjusting past liver disease history, there might be genetic susceptibility in the carcinogenic mechanism of liver cancer. Further investigations are needed to clarify the effect of family history of liver disease on PLCA risk.

  • The aim of this study is to acquire a better understanding of how natural history(NH) and natural history museums(NHM) are perceived among students, teachers and parents by administering a questionnaire. A total of over 2500 people participated in this survey. We developed the questionnaire which was categorized by three specific areas: 1) people's overall perceptions of natural history and natural history museums; 2)the way of people's getting such perceptions and knowledge; 3) people's possessing interests in NH and NHM. The summary of survey results included; firstly people had paid attention to nature and natural environments; secondly NH and NHM were not familiar to people, but they expressed their eagerness to learn about them; thirdly the first image occurred to people was dinosaur, when they recalled NH and NHM with describing them to be mysterious and education.; on the fourth, NH and NHM were informed through TV programs; lastly, most people responded that they never learned about NH and NHM in schools but they wanted to learn them.

  • The 19th CPC National Congress has a key historical significance in the development of China's constitution. It will also play a decisive role in the history of the seventy years'constitutional change in New China. XiJinping's new socialist thought with Chinese characteristics established in the report of 19th CPC National Congress will be written in the preface of the March 2018 National People's Congress's constitutional amendment. The fifth revision of 1982 Constitution will touch on many issues such as the leadership of the CPC into the constitution, the abolition of the tenure of the president, the constitutional oath system, and the reform of the national supervisory system. In addition, the constitutionality review system, the establishment of the National Security Council, the constitutional status of socialist public property and private property and the adjustment of major economic system has become a hot topic in the theory field. In the history node towards a socialist country ruled by law, the theory and practice of the China indeed have the academic ideas, value position and path model differences, which will delay the Chinese constitutional development, but also is the necessary pain in the process of moving towards the rule of law in China. Indeed, how to the development and where to go in the future of Chinese constitutionalism itself has sample value, which deserves rational attention and in-depth inquiry from Chinese and Western academics.

  • Science has developed along with human society and history. In today's society ruled by pluralism, an educational approach using the historical materials which represent their own cultures will make science education more effective. The purpose of this study was to search for the meaning of science education related with a history of science, and to suggest the possibility for science education based on Korean history of science. The conclusions of this study is below: (1) The history of science is useful to teaching science in K-12 setting. That is because it was helpful to make a scientific concept and to invite student's interest about learning science. Moreover, it was most suitable to teach the nature of science as well as the relation between science and society. (2) A model which consists of 15 types of science education materials using Korean history was suggested. This model plays a potential role as a R&D framework of developing teaching & learning materials based on the history of Korean Science.

  • Extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) stars are thought to be genuine second-generation of stars because they were born from relatively pristine gas chemically enriched by one or two supernovae. So, the EMP stars presumably originated from outside the Milky Way (MW) are important tracers for the early chemical evolution and assembly history of the MW. In this study, we present the preliminary results on the early assembly history of the MW inferred by associating the dynamical properties of our EMP stars with those of known substructures in the MW. We also explore the star formation history of the progenitor galaxies of our EMP stars by investigating the elemental abundances of the EMP stars associated with the substructure.

  • The purpose of this study is to know how to utilize foreigners such as Weltevree and Hamel who visited Korea in the pre-modern period, during history class. Both Weltevree and Hamel were Dutch men, and the first person who visited the Joseon Dynasty was Weltevree. He was a sailor of the Dutch East India Company, landed on Jeju Island in 1627, and since then, he did not return to his country. He played a major role in the execution of weapons. Hammel, the merchant catcher of the Dutch East India Company, traveled to Joseon in 1653 and contacted several kinds of people in various parts of the country for 13 years, and was able to survey the scenery and customs of Joseon. It can be difficult for students to understand the overall trends of the world history and the views of the East and the West because students learn from Western history, East Asian history, and Korean history, separately. Learning characteristics associated with East-West exchanges will enable students to understand the Western and Eastern history of the West, and understand the history of the world.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore characteristics of natural history museum exhibits from the viewpoint of science education. A total of ninety exhibits for this study were examined in national science museums of Korea and Japan. Exhibits of Tokyo national science museum were again divided into two groups: the old and traditional types, and the new and renovated ones. Even though analyzing data was not undertaken through quantitative statistical process, the interpretation of the data was valid enough to fulfill the purpose of the research. While there were clear changes and differences between the old and the new types of exhibits in Tokyo national science museum, the old part of Tokyo museum was similar to one in Korea. Based on analyzing the new types of Tokyo museum, the current movement in the field of natural history museums of Korea explicitly has toward utilizing more science education concepts and ideas.

  • In this expository paper, we present an abridged report on the max-plus eigenspaces of max-plus matrices with its brief history. At the end of our work, a number of examples are presented with maple codes, and then we make a claim from the observation of these examples, which is on the euclidean dimension of the max-plus eigenspaces of strongly definite matrices.
