  • Network virtualization technology is a crucial research issue of Future Internet which pursues a service-oriented architecture so-called NaaS (Network as a Service) or SDN (Software Defined Network). Network virtualization is expected to play an important role in Future Internet researches as a network testbed technology which enables innovative protocols to be experimented independently on a common testbed environment. We propose a control framework in order to provide user defined topology and bandwidth services with network virtualization and to separate and manage multiple-user traffics in a small and medium scale - single domain research network. The proposed framework (VIMS; Virtual network Integrated control and Management System) supports testbed expansions without any changes of heterogeneous virtual network support equipments through accommodation of each equipment's control plane. The framework shows a feasibility through applied to KOREN and we describe the differences and further study directions for improvement the framework comparing with GENI control framework.

  • We have investigated the role of slow inhibitory neurons in spontaneous activity using a model network controlled by stochastic mean field theory based on Integrated-and-Fire excitatory and fast inhibitory neurons. It is found that inputting slow inhibitory neurons to such network induces stable spontaneous activity at a much lower threshold than without slow inhibitory neurons in the network. This threshold range is low enough to be considered as biological threshold of cortical neurons. Only slow inhibitory neurons can give adjustable negative feedback in the network keeping lower rate and lower threshold.

  • A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model was developed in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of a granitic rock mass at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). The model used a three-dimensional discrete fracture network (DFN), assuming a correlation between the length and aperture of the fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in the fractures. These assumptions that previous studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. The geologic and hydraulic data of the fractures were obtained in the rock mass at the KURT. Then, these data were applied to the developed fracture discrete network model. The model was applied in estimating the representative elementary volume (REV), the equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, and the amount of groundwater inflow into the tunnel. The developed discrete fracture network model can determine the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behavior and estimate the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT. Therefore, the assumptions that the fracture length is correlated to the fracture aperture and the flow in a fracture occurs in a trapezoid shape appear to be effective in the DFN analysis used to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the fractured rock mass.

  • The important field of research on ship operation is related to the high efficiency of transportation, the convenience of maneuvering ships and the safety of navigation. As a way of practical application for a smart ship based on network system, this paper proposes the intelligent support system for ship steering control system based on TCP/IP and desires to testify the validity of the proposal by applying the fuzzy control model to the steering control system. As the specific study methods, the fuzzy inference was adopted to build the maneuvering models of steersman, and then the network system was implemented using the TCP/IP socket-based programming. Lastly, the miniature model steering control system combined with LIBL (Linguistic Instruction-based Learning) was designed to testify for its effectiveness.

  • Nowadays, a rapid development in wind power technologies is occurring compared with other renewable energies. This advance in technology has facilitated a new generation of wind turbines with larger capacity and higher efficiency. As the height of the turbines and the distance between turbines increases, the monitoring and control of this new generation wind turbines presents new challenges. This paper presents the architectural design, simulation, and evaluation of hybrid communication networks for a large-scale wind turbine (WT). The communication network of WT is designed based on logical node (LN) concepts of the IEC 61400-25 standard. The proposed hybrid network architectures are modeled and evaluated by OPNET. We also investigate network performance using three different technologies: Ethernet-based, WiFi-based, and ZigBee-based. Our network model is validated by analyzing the simulation results. This work contributes to the design of a reliable communication network for monitoring and controlling a wind power farms (WPF).

  • As numerous sensors and actuators are used in many automated systems, various industrial networks are adopted for real-time distributed control. In order to take advantages of the networking, however, the network implementation should be carefully designed to satisfy real-time requirements considering network induced delays. This paper presents an implementation scheme of a networked control system via Profibus-DP network fur real-time distributed control. More specifically, the effect of the network induced delay on the control performance is evaluated on a Profibus-DP testbed. Also, two conventional PID gain tuning methods are slightly modified fur fouling controllers fur the networked control system. With appropriate choices for gains, it is shown that the networked control system can perform almost as well as the traditional control system.

  • The national satellite operation network, which supports multiple satellites, was designated as a Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) in 2017. The network was designed independently from the control network and the information network to enhance physical security. Planning is underway to establish a bidirectional data interface between networks. The data transmission system allows data flow only to the physical layer and the data link layer; hence, only one file can be transferred at any one time. This means that when large amounts of data are being transmitted, no other data can be sent simultaneously in urgent situations. Thus, this paper discusses the design of flexible packets for the transmission of data between networks in an environment where physical security has been enhanced through network separation and based on this, presents a method for transmitting data effectively.

  • PC camera-based instant messenger have problems of video image break/delay and noise. The reason is caused by a composed problem that PC Camera is belong to the connected PC and operating in the PC. This research suggests an instant messenger that uses network camera connected to LAN instead of PC camera. Therefore, the instant messenger has a component that the camera is separated from PC. This research designs sequence diagram, video calls flow chart, and graphic user interface of the instant messenger. The instant messenger based on network camera provides high quality video calls service and makes it possible to call from a special remote site with real-time video image.

  • This research aims to compare between regression and neural network in terms of the predictive ability of the overhead costs in hospitals. For this purpose, this research uses the number of out-patients and complex medical treatments as explaining variables. Thirty-one hospitals were used for the empirical test The test result shows that the regression model has a more predictive ability than the neural network.
