The Roles of Estrogens in the Efferent Ductules of the Male Reproductive System : A Review

  • Male reproduction is influenced by a number of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including environmental endocrine disruptors. Testosterone is a well recognized intrinsic regulator for development and function of the male reproductive tract, and thus male fertility. The testis and semen of many mammalians contain an unusually high concentration of estrogen. Testosterone is converted into estrogen by the enzymatic action of cytochrome P450 aromatase complex (Cyp19a1). Of the male reproductive tract, the efferent ductules (EDs) possess exceptionally elevated levels of estrogen receptors (ERs), ER${\alpha}$ and ER${\beta}$, indicating that estrogen, in addition to testosterone, would have a functional role in regulation of male reproduction. First, this review has focused on description and summary of what is currently known for functions of estrogen in the EDs. The biosynthetic pathway of estrogen occurring in the testis is briefly covered, following by detailed explanation of the morphology and physiology of EDs. In the next section, the sources and targets of estrogen in the male reproductive tract are highlighted, and possible functional roles of estrogen in the EDs are justified from the aspect of physiology, molecular biology, and morphology in adult animal models. Also, this section covers the importance of estrogen and ERs in maintaining normal function and morphology of the EDs during postnatal development. In the last part of this review, the effects of extrinsic factors, especially environmental endocrine-disruptors, on the EDs is summarized. The intent of this review is to emphasize the importance of estrogen for regulation of physiological function of the EDs, and thus male fertility.

Job Satisfaction among Korean Nurses: A Literature Review (간호사의 직무만족에 관한 문헌 분석)

  • Purpose: This study systematically reviewed the research literature on nurse job satisfaction to suggest directions for further research. Methods: A total of 98 articles published in the journals registered in National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) from January 2000 to August 2013 were included for the final analysis. Results: The number of published papers related to nurse job satisfaction has increased annually. The most frequently used instrument to measure nurse job satisfaction was 'The Index of Work Satisfaction'developed by Slavitt et al. (1978). 'Personal Perception/Attitude' was the strongest predictor influencing on nurse job satisfaction (41 times, 38.0%). Organizational commitment, turnover intention, nursing performance, job stress, and organizational performance were commonly used as outcome variables related to nurse job satisfaction. Conclusion: Further research is needed to analyze diverse influential factors on nurse job satisfaction. In addition, it is also needed to develop an intervention program which can improve nurse job satisfaction.

A Comparing Study on Guideline for Authors in Journals of KIOM and Korean Medicine Academy (한의학 학술지 참고문헌 기술규정의 상이성에 관한 연구)

  • Objective : Academies or societies of Korean Medicine have their journals. Those Journals usually follow guidlines for authors of Journal of KOMS(Korean oriental medical society). However, altough academies or societies of Korean Medicine are branches of KOMS, their guidlines for authors of journal are different form KOMS's. Method : We compared guidlines for authors in academies or societies of Korean Medicine which journals is listed in NRF(National Research Foundation of Korea). Result : They have 78.9% coincidence in guidlines for authors of journal, 68.4% in url adress and 57.9% in both books and chapter. Conclusion : Academies or societies of Korean Medicine might comply with KIOM in guidlines for authors of their journal because they are brabches of KIOM. In addition, these days, scholars try to make journal DB, journal referaence DB, ontology and so on so journals of KIOM and journals of Korean Medicine academies might be agreed especially in guidlines for authors.

A Study on the Improvement Plans of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Data Archives in Korea (국내 인문사회 연구데이터 아카이브의 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to propose improvement plans of the Humanities and Social Sciences research data archives in Korea. For this purpose, literature reviews were conducted to prove the importance of the Humanities and Social Sciences research data and establish a theoretical basis for the concept and requirements of data archives. In addition, analysis of the Korean Research Memory (KRM), case surveys for a total of 9 domestic and international archives, and in-depth interviews with a total of 10 researchers in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences were conducted as well. As for the improvement of the Humanities and Social Sciences research data archives in Korea, establishing a cooperative system between the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences was proposed first for data archives of each project. Secondly, a conceptual model of research data archives was designed in such a way that the archives would perform according to a life cycle of research data in the cooperative system, all based on data curation.

Improved Method for Considering Citation Measures in Evaluating Korean Journals (국내 학술지평가에서 인용지수 반영 방법의 개선방안)

  • Recently, the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) announced new plan to reflect the KCI citation measures in journal evaluation. In principle, Journal evaluation should reflect each journals situation and characteristics through various indicators. In this study, three improvement plans were proposed by reviewing the announced journal evaluation plan of NRF. The first improvement is to consider the five-year IF as an additional citation measure; the second improvement is to allow flexible selection of the category level on which to rank journals; and the last improvement is to combine the previous two methods and apply them together. The improvement methods proposed in this study are expected to contribute to minimizing side effects of KCI journal evaluation.

Trends in Domestic Research on Knowledge Management by Using Keyword Analysis (키워드 분석을 통한 지식경영 관련 국내연구 동향)

  • Knowledge management can be defined as the valuable storing and creation of new knowledge, as well as the sharing of this knowledge to be applied in all areas of an organization's management activities (Turban et al., 2003). In a knowledge-based society where intangible intellectual assets are the source of competitive advantage rather than tangible assets, knowledge management activities are emphasized in both academia and industry. This study analyzes research on "knowledge management" keyword indexed in the Korean Citation Index (https://kci.go.kr), operated by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), to identify related research trends in Korea and suggest future directions for knowledge management activities. The results show that knowledge management is being researched through the integration of various fields and theories, indicating the potential for expanding research topics and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, the study of knowledge management often include the keyword 'innovation', emphasizing its significant role in organizational and technological innovations. The analysis of keywords by year also reveals that they reflect the major environmental changes of each period, demonstrating the increasing importance of knowledge management in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Induction of Demyelination of Neuronal cells by Sindbis Virus (Sindbis Virus에 의한 뉴런세포의 탈수초의 유도)

  • Many viruses including mouse hepatitis virus, corona, measles, and sidbis viruses are known as causative virus of inducing demyelination which means destruction of myelination in nervous system of mice. The purpose of this study is to investigate processing of myelination by co-culture of Schwann cells and neuronal cells and demyelination induced by infection of sindbis virusin rat. Schwann cells and neuronal cells from dorsal root ganglion (DRG) in embryos (E16) of rat were cultured in vitro respectively. The purified neuronal cells with anti-mitotic agents and purified Schwann cells were co-cultured. After that, infection of sindbis virus into this myelinated co-culture system was performed. Myelination and demyelination process were observed using antibody of myelin basic protein meaning presence of myelination.We identified myelination and demyelination processing using antibody of peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP 22) meaning presence of myelinated neuron. Analysis of Efficiency of Recombinant pOPINEneo-3C-GFP Vector with p53 Tumor Suppression Gene Inserted (p53 암억제 유전자가 삽입된 재조합 pOPINEneo-3C-GFP 벡터의 효율 분석)

  • Recombinant baculoviruses are widely used to express heterologous genes in cultured insect cells. Recombinant baculoviruses can serve as gene-transfer vectors for expression of recombinant proteins in a wide range of mammalian cell types. Baculovirus system has significant benefits in view of safety, large-scale, and high level of gene expression. In this study, baculoviral vectors which were reconstructed from pOPINEneo-3C-GFP vector, were recombined with cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, green fluorescent protein (GFP), and p53 with NcoI and XhoI. These recombinant vectors were infected with various cells and cell lines. The baculovirus vector thus developed was analyzed by comparing the metastasis and expression of the recombinant genes with conventional vectors. These results suggest that the baculovirus vector has higher efficiency in metastasis and expression than the control vector. Transfection and Expression of Reconstructed Genes within Baculoviral Vectors (Baculovirus 벡터내 재구성된 유전자의 전이와 발현)

  • Baculovirus was originally isolated from the alfalfa looper and contains a 134-kbp genome with 154 open reading frames (ORF). The major capsid protein VP39 together with some minor proteins forms the nucleocapsid ($21nm{\times}260nm$) that encloses the DNA with p6.9 protein. They are double-stranded, circular, supercoiled DNA molecules in a rod-shaped capsid. Wild-type baculoviruses exhibit both lytic and occluded life cycles that develop independently throughout the three phases of virus replication. Recombinant baculoviruses can transfer their vectors and express their recombinant proteins in a wide range of mammalian cell types. Especially, inclusion of a dominant selectable marker in these baculoviral vectors can express diverse recombinant genes in many cells. Baculoviral vectors were reconstructed with cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter,uroplakin II promoter, polyhedron promoter, vesicular stomatitis virus G (VSVG), enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), protein transduction domain (PTD) gene and so on. These reconstructed vectors were infected into various cell and cell lines. We performed transfection and expression of these recombinant vectors comparison with other control vectors. From this study, we knew that transfection and expression of these recombinant vectors have higher efficacy than any control vector. Who Speaks for Innovations?: An Analysis of the Media Exposure of R&D Outputs

  • The literature in research policy extensively addresses the interaction between public R&D and the society. Scholars have paid particular attention to the way science and technology are diffused into the society and industry with the aim of substantiating their potential value. In practice, having recognized the importance of the said interaction, R&D entities and governmental organizations promote scientific and technological innovations that result from their R&D activities. Yet, the nature of news media exposure as their primary channel to promote R&D outcomes has been remarkably understudied. Using the results of R&D projects supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), this study examines R&D entities' strategic use of the news media to publicize their outcomes. The empirical results suggest that the scale of an R&D project positively affects the counts of media exposure of its R&D outcomes, whereas the level of technology readiness and the technology life-cycle do not have significant influence. In addition, the results suggest that, compared to senior researchers, young researchers are more likely to publicize their R&D outcomes and that R&D outcomes from highly ranked universities are more likely to be publicized than those from lower-ranking universities despite our control for R&D outcomes. The aforementioned results suggest that in promoting the diffusion of science and technology, especially to the public, policymakers should be concerned about incentives for those who provide techno-scientific information, such as researchers. The social need for the diffusion of techno-scientific information into the public (e.g., technology transfer and diffusion) is an insignificant factor in determining the media exposure of such information, whereas personal benefits and sensitive issues related to a researcher's own R&D activities (e.g., justification for R&D activities) drive researchers to publicize their R&D outcomes. This paper suggests that policymakers, especially those concerned with better diffusion of scientific and technological innovations need to design a proper incentive system to maximize the societal benefits of media exposure.
