This study aims to understand main contents of the National Mental Health Strategy and changes after mental health reform through the National Mental Health Strategy in Australia, and to find some convergence policy implications on mental health policy in South Korea. The direction of reform has changed considerably over the 20 years that the National Mental Health Strategy has been in place including the National Mental Health Policy(1992, 2008), the National Mental Health Plan(1993~2014), COAG National Action Plan on Mental Health(2006~2011), the Roadmap for National Mental Health Reform 2012-2022. The National Mental Health Strategy has advocated fundamental change in the national spending on mental health, mental health service provision, the expansion of community-based mental health services and care system, NGO, consumer and carer participation in mental health care.
Purpose: The study investigated the relationships among perceived stress, mental health, and social support in community residents. Method: A self-reporting questionnaire was completed by 302 community residents aged 19-64-years-of-age from October 7 to November 30, 2008. Assessment tools were an The established perceived stress scale, standardized mental health scale, and established social support scale. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient using the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Result: Significantly negative correlations were evident between perceived stress and social support, and between social support and mental health. But, there was a significantly positive correlation between perceived stress and mental health. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a strategy to decrease perceived stress, improve mental health, and increase social support for community residents.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore how university students perceive the mental health, what are the factors affecting the mental health in their lives. Methods: The participants of this study were eight university students who haven't participated in a class of mental health, residing in G city. This study collected the data between May 9 and June 13, 2016, and adopted a photovoice methodology of participatory action research. Results: The mental health perceived by the participants was expressed as new things re-experiencing in a familiar daily life of themselves, and things seem the same but different from others. Through discussion, the participants found that affecting factors of the mental health they negatively perceived could work on others as positive factors. Also, the participants were in search of a strategy to individually protect the mental health barriers in ways of that could contribute to mental health of the community such as conformity to social regulations. Conclusions: Based on these results, this study was meaningful in that various views were derived to prepare strategies and policy alternatives to promote university students' mental health.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationship among musculoskeletal problems, sleep problems, and self-rated mental health of home-care workers. Methods: Data were collected from 447 home-care workers spanning three occupation types: life supporters for the elderly, home-visit caregivers, and life supporters for the disabled. Musculoskeletal problems, sleep problems, and self-rated mental health were assessed using structured questionnaires. Factors affecting self-rated mental health were analyzed using multiple regression. SPSS was used to test the mediating effects of sleep problems on musculoskeletal problems and self-rated mental health. Results: Among the general characteristics, the variables that showed significant differences in musculoskeletal problems were monthly income level, caring-related career duration, weekly working hours, and occupation type; and the variable that showed significant differences in self-rated mental health was occupation type. Among the occupation types, supporters for the disabled had the most musculoskeletal problems and the lowest self-rated mental health. Musculoskeletal problems among home-care workers had a direct negative effect on self-rated mental health and indirect negative effects on sleep problems. Conclusion: Measures are needed to reduce the differences in working conditions and health status among the occupation types of home-care workers. Considering the relevance between the health issues of home-care workers, the development of a carefully designed health promotion strategy is required.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to construct a structural equation model that would further explain the mental health status of Korean immigrants living in Canada. Methods: Survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted with 386 people in Canada (Vancouver and Toronto). Six instruments were used in this model. The analysis of data was done with both SPSS 14.0 for descriptive statistics and AMOS 5.0 for covariance structure analysis. Results: Based on the constructed model, physical health status, immigrant life stress, self esteem, and quality of life were found to have significant direct effect on mental health. In addition, factors such as physical health status, immigrant life stress, quality of life, English proficiency, family cohesion and social support were found to indirectly affect mental health. The final modified model yielded Chi-square=34.79 (p<.001), df=13, $x^2$/df=2.68, GFI=0.98, AGFI=0.94, NFI=0.95, PNFI=0.44, PGFI=0.35, RMSE=0.07 and exhibited good fit indices. Conclusion: This structural equation model is a comprehensive theoretical model that explains the related factors and their relationship with mental health in Korean immigrants. Findings of this study can contribute to the designing of an appropriate prevention strategy to further improve the mental health of immigrants in Canada.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mental health status, stress, coping ability, and coping strategies of college students. Methods: The questionnaires were handed out to 162 college students in the Gyeonggi province. Data was collected using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) scale of the 90 items, the 'Person in the Rain' drawing test, and the 20-item coping strategies questions. Results: 17.3% of the respondents were belonged to the groups of abnormal or abnormal tendency in the mental health status according to the Global Severity Index (GSI) scores. The clinical/border groups were more commonly used in the 'emotion-focused' coping strategies compared to the normal group. This difference was also statistically significant. Both coping resource and coping ability were significantly associated with the mental health status. Conclusions: These findings suggest that future intervention for effective coping strategies should be carefully designed to promote better mental health among college students. It is also important to detect problematic and weak student's behaviors in the early stages.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify variables influencing suicide ideation among adolescents. Methods: Data were collected from 235 middle school students in Chungbuk Province from April to September 2007. We used the Korean versions of Reynold's Suicide Ideation Questionnaire, Children's Depression Inventory and Conners-Wells' Adolescent Scale, Beck's Hopelessness Scale and Internet Addiction Scale-K for measuring the research variables. Results: Of the subjects, 23.0% were classified into the risk group of suicide ideation. Overall, the score of the suicide ideation scale was 14.25 (${\pm}16.38$). The score of the suicide ideation scale in female adolescents ($17.45{\pm}19.04$) was significantly higher than that in male ones ($11.17{\pm}12.65$). Depression was a major predictor of suicide ideation. ADHD, gender, internet addiction, and hopelessness were the other significant predictors of suicide ideation. Conclusion: A strategy for school mental health education should be provided in order to prevent suicide ideation. The function of school health and Mental Health Center should be reinforced in terms of organization and staff personnel.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of nursing professionalism on the nursing performance and retention intention among psychiatric mental health nurses. Methods: As a descriptive correlational study, this study sampled 206 psychiatric mental health nurses in six hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi area through convenience sampling. Data were collected from March 2 to 31, 2009 using a self-report questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 16.0. Results: In the subscales of professionalism, the 'Sense of calling' had the highest mean score while the 'Professional organization' had the lowest mean score. A significant positive correlation was observed in nursing professionalism, nursing performance and retention intention. According to an analysis on the impact of each subscale of nursing professionalism on nursing performance and retention intention, the 'Sense of calling' and 'Autonomy' were the most significant predictor variable. Conclusion: The results confirmed that the improvement of psychiatric mental health nurses' professionalism increases their nursing performance and retention intention and the 'Sense of calling' and 'Autonomy' are critical prediction factors. It is necessary to come up with a strategy which strengthens nursing professionalism in order to improve psychiatric mental health nurses' performance and retention intention.
Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors affecting the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Methods: Six-hundred patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder were recruited from mental health welfare centers in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi-do. Subjects were categorized into two groups according to median DUP. Demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean DUP was 80.8 weeks, and the median DUP was 15.9 weeks. Patients with Medicaid, higher age, and longer duration of the schizophrenia prodrome were more likely to have a longer DUP. The DUP was shorter in patients who were consulted by family/relatives prior to treatment. Patients visiting university hospitals were more likely to have a shorter DUP compared with those visiting psychiatric clinics or small-sized mental hospitals, i.e., with less than 100 beds. A multivariate regression analysis showed that the duration of the prodrome was a factor that significantly affected DUP. Conclusion: The vulnerable group of patients with schizophrenia with a long DUP should be monitored closely. Moreover, it is necessary to develop a strategy to identify patients who have an insidious course of psychosis to reduce the DUP.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of an integrated activity program on the self-efficacy and depression of underprivileged elderly women living alone. Methods: The participants recruited were fifty underprivileged elderly women living alone in D city. Data were collected from September 1 to October 1, 2015. To test the effects of the integrated activity program, the participants were divided into two matched groups, an experimental group (N=25) and control group (N=25). The data were analyzed with a ${\chi}^2-test$, Fisher's exact probability test, and t-test using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: After attending the integrated activity program, significant differences between the experimental group and control group were found for self-efficacy (t=9.19, p<.001) and depression (t=-18.31, p<.001). Conclusion: The results indicate that the integrated activity program enhances self-efficacy and reduces depression in underprivileged elderly women living alone. Therefore, this program is a good strategy that community mental health nurses can use to improve the mental health of underprivileged elderly women living alone.
