  • Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) is developing as a tool for environmentally sound and sustainable development in Korea. For more effective implementation of it, we try to apply Environmental Information System (EIS) to EIA process. EIS is composed of geographic and attribute data related to environment and Geographic Information System(GIS), and it will be applied to scoping, prediction, and alternative assessment, etc. in EIA. This study focuses on application of geographic data using GIS in suitability analysis of alternative assessment. We use TIN, buffering, and overlaying in GIS functions.

  • The national framework data is being constructed by the second plan of NGIS(National geographic information system). However, themes of national framework data are not reflecting various geographic information of marine that demand is increasing. Also, it is mean that national framework data did not consider concept of country which is integrate land and marine. Therefor, this study perform to organize marine framework data through analysis of overseas framework data, and present the composition of national framework data that land and marine are integrated through investigate relationship between national framework data and marine framework data.

  • This paper defines the prototype of the geographic-object field that links the geographic-object and the geographic-field using an object-oriented geographic information system, and then implements the flood simulation in the saemangeum water resources management system that manipulates the water quantity of saemangeum lake and the height of gate using the watershed-object field. This paper combines the natural phenomena with the artificial phenomena that occurs on the water resources of the saemangeum, and designs the object oriented class hierarchy that is composed of the total watershed-object field, and then presents the algorithm for flood control. To visualize the class hierarchy of the whole geographic-object field and the partial geographic-object field, I use the UML(Unified Modeling Language). Attributes and methods of each class can acquire the functional reusability and compatibility using the COM of the ZEUS and the Visual Basic 6.0 of Win32 APIs. By means of implementing the flood simulation in the Saemangeum water resources management system, finally, this paper contributes on the efficient management of water resources.

  • Since the National Geographic Information System(NGIS) project of 1995, the geographic information projects have been promoted in various areas such as central and local governments. In the fact that large scale budget has been invested to geographic information projects as a national policy, the cost-benefit analysis would be essential to enhance the efficiency of the resource allocation. In this circumstance, this study analyzes the costs and benefits of geographic information produced by NGI(National Geography Institute). As a result of the cost-benefit analysis, the total amount of benefits were estimated approximately 620 million dollars and the accumulated ratio of the cost to benefit was 1 to 4.4. Also, the internal ratio of the benefit was 38%, which justified the large scale investment. In case of adding qualitative benefits which can not be measured in a quantitative term, the overall benefits from using such geographic information would be much higher than quantitative benefits. Further research work is required for more objective verification of the large scale national project such as building nationwide geographic information.

  • This paper focuses on minimizing flood damage in the Yeongdeok basin of South Korea by establishing a flood prediction model based on a geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, and geomorphoclimatic instantaneous unit hydrograph (GcIUH) techniques. The GIS database for flash flood prediction was created using data from digital elevation models (DEMs), soil maps, and Landsat satellite imagery. Flood prediction was based on the peak discharge calculated at the sub-basin scale using hydrogeomorphologic techniques and the threshold runoff value. Using the developed flash flood prediction model, rainfall conditions with the potential to cause flooding were determined based on the cumulative rainfall for 20 minutes, considering rainfall duration, peak discharge, and flooding in the Yeongdeok basin.

  • This paper reviewed the main characteristics of Web 2.0 and discussed the possible applications related to National Geographic Information Systems. In general, Web 2.0 refers to a next generation World Wide Web environment that let people participate and share information and data. The recent examples using Web 2.0 with geo-spatial information are convincing us apply Web 2.0 into National Geographic Information Systems. In order to imply Web 2.0 into National Geographic Information Systems, we should consider not only technological advancements related to providing the services but also shifting the relationship between information provider(government agencies) and end-users. In other words, new platform should be provided to users so that users can easily create, share, and mash-up data, which was previously managed and owned only by government agencies. Successful integration Web 2.0 platform into National Geographic Information Systems require some important points such that; 1) the consideration for the data should be changed from closed and agency owned data to opened and shared data. 2) data standards should be established to integrate all data from different sources. 3) real change need to be happened rather than different naming on the same system.

  • Recent cohort studies have relied on exposure prediction models to estimate individual-level air pollution concentrations because individual air pollution measurements are not available for cohort locations. For such prediction models, geographic variables related to pollution sources are important inputs. We demonstrated the computation process of geographic variables mostly recorded in 2010 at regulatory air pollution monitoring sites in South Korea. On the basis of previous studies, we finalized a list of 313 geographic variables related to air pollution sources in eight categories including traffic, demographic characteristics, land use, transportation facilities, physical geography, emissions, vegetation, and altitude. We then obtained data from different sources such as the Statistics Geographic Information Service and Korean Transport Database. After integrating all available data to a single database by matching coordinate systems and converting non-spatial data to spatial data, we computed geographic variables at 294 regulatory monitoring sites in South Korea. The data integration and variable computation were performed by using ArcGIS version 10.2 (ESRI Inc., Redlands, CA, USA). For traffic, we computed the distances to the nearest roads and the sums of road lengths within different sizes of circular buffers. In addition, we calculated the numbers of residents, households, housing buildings, companies, and employees within the buffers. The percentages of areas for different types of land use compared to total areas were calculated within the buffers. For transportation facilities and physical geography, we computed the distances to the closest public transportation depots and the boundary lines. The vegetation index and altitude were estimated at a given location by using satellite data. The summary statistics of geographic variables in Seoul across monitoring sites showed different patterns between urban background and urban roadside sites. This study provided practical knowledge on the computation process of geographic variables in South Korea, which will improve air pollution prediction models and contribute to subsequent health analyses.

  • This paper designs and implements the management system that can calibrate the contamination vulnerability of the ground water, using an object oriented data model. Geographic-objects are specified by features extracted from an applicable geographic domain, and geographic-fields are defined by chemical factors extracted from each driven water. To show the topological relationships among the geographic-objects and the geographic-fields, this paper attach the weight and the ratio of the drastic model to chemical factors represented on the land use digital map and the ground water digital map. The geographic feature class, administrative boundary class, land use class and driven water class consist of a class composition hierarchy for evaluating the convenient contamination vulnerability calibration with spatial relationships among the well objects. Therefore, this management system for evaluating the contamination vulnerability can also contribute to the application of other natural environments.

  • Recently, GIS(Geographic Information System) has been developed to personalized service for providing the specialized services that is aimed to personal user based on mobile communication. The existing GIS system provides comprehensive and simple information but GIS System for personalized service must provide the adjustive information through the personal interest profile based on POI(PoInt of Interest). This paper describes the intelligent retrieval geographical information service module for providing personal oriented geographic information service. Our proposal model consists of user preference profile, acquisition of POI through hybrid network (Wireless LAN, CDMA), service platform and implementation of prototype system. Implementation model can apply to the life information service like restaurant, oil station, convenient store and etc.
