  • A taxonomic revision of Deutzia in Korea was conducted based on critical observations of wild populations and herbarium specimens. Species delimitations were re-evaluated on the basis of morphological characters and distributions resulting in the recognition of five taxa. The texture of leaf, flower disk and capsules, the shape of leaf, inflorescence and capsules are useful diagnostic traits at the specific level. The five taxa are well distinguished from each other. Deutzia grandiflora var. baroniana can be distinguished by its distribution and calyx from Deutzia uniflora, which are morphologically similar. Deutzia paniculata Nakai, a rare and endemic plant, is characterized by having panicle in inflorescences. On the other hand, Deutzia glabrata Kom. is occasionally confused with Deutzia parviflora, but the most distinctive characters include the surface of leaves, the surface and size of capsules. Photographs and a key to five species of Deutzia were provided in addition to distribution.

  • The insect industry in Korea is currently undergoing steady expansion. Among the various insects kept as pets or for educational purposes, four mantis species, including Hierodula patellifera (Audinet-Serville), Tenodera angustipennis Saussure, Tenodera sinensis Saussure, and Statilia maculata (Thunberg), are becoming increasingly popular, leading to higher demand. As we aimed to raise mantises, we collected oothecae, some of which were found to be parasitized by dermestid beetles. These parasitoids have been unequivocally identified as Thaumaglossa rufocapillata Redtenbacher based on morphological characters. A diagnosis, habitus photographs, and illustrations of diagnostic characters are provided to facilitate identification. We also present the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence of T. rufocapillata for providing fundamental data for research aimed at controlling pests in the insect industry.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for off line recognition of handwritten characters, especially effective for large-set characters such as Korean and Chinese characters. The algorithm is based on a minimum distance dlassification method which is simple and easy to implement but suffers from low recognition performance. Two strategies have been developed to improve its performance; one is multi-stage pre-classification and the other is candicate reordering. Effectiveness of the algorithm has been proven by and experimet with the samples of 574 classes in a handwritten Korean character catabase named PE02, where 86.0% of recognition accuracy and 15 characters per second of processing speed have been obtained.

  • Recently, for designing virtual characters in the battle game field effectively, some methods are very needed to predicate the win rates of the battle of them efficiently. In this paper, we propose a method to solve this problem by combining simulation and machine learning. Firstly, a simulation is used to analyze the win rates of the battle of virtual characters in the battle game. In addition, we apply a regression model based machine learning scheme to predict win rates of the battle of virtual characters according to their abilities. Our experimental results using suggested method show that it is almost no difference between the win rates of the simulation and the prediction results using the machine learning scheme. And also, we can obtain good performance in the experiment using only simple regression based machine learning model.

  • This work concerns morphological studies of the Japaness jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus(Temminck & Schlegel). A total of 48 random samples consisting of 2669 fish is examined, representing three geographic regions, namely, Kamakura, Nagasaki, and Tottori. Preservation affects length and weight of fish considerably, but the variability after 10 days is shown to be negligible. The variability in measuring the morphometric characters due to different measures and orders is found to be significant. They are relatively small, however, compared to the variability in mean length to be expected in samples drawn from the population. Two meristic characters, namely, anal and second dorsal fin rays and three morphometric characters, namely, head length, first and second dorsal insertion distances are chosen for the study. Results of the statistical analysis reveal that differences in the selected meristic characters among samples within and between regions are found to be significant. In general, it is reasonable to state that the jack mackerel collected in Nagasaki region, on the average, have greatest number of anal fin ray and second dorsal fin ray followed by Kamakura, and Tottori regions in that order. It is found that although no significant differences in the slope of regression line are noticed, the mean differences of the selected morphometric measurements in relation to fish length are found to be significant among samples within each region. Differences in the regression coefficients as well as the adjusted sample means are found to be significant between regions. The analysis suggests that samples from Nagasaki region, on the average, have longest head length and greatest distances from snout to the insertion of first dorsal and second dorsal fins followed by Kamakura, and Tottori regions in that order.

  • A questionnaire survey was carried out in order to understand the discomfort when people experience in reading Korean characters of displays. In the survey, 499 respondents (276 males and 223 females), whose ages ranged from 10s to 70s, participated, while 19.6% of the respondents were over 60 years old. The mean visual acuity was 0.93, while it decreased as the age increases from 40s. Approximately 41.4% of the respondents, 98% of them were over 40s, reported that they experienced presbyopia. It was found that the percentage of the respondents who experienced the discomfort much in reading Korean characters significantly increased as the age increases from 40s. The respondents over 40s reported different discomfort experiences according to the type of displays. It was found that the respondents thought that the main reason for the discomfort in reading is related to the character size. The survey results showed that the Korean text in the displays should be designed to be easily readable by the main users.

  • The purpose of this article is to examine how Byron's Don Juan VII-VIII depicts the various facets of characters' minds and actions in taking attitude toward glory during wartime in Ismail, Turkey. It explores the multifaceted sides of their hidden intentions and military activities in the self-centered and ruthless battle. Byron investigates their diverse and unreasonable causes, which drive them to undertake their particular deeds while participating in the combat. He unfolds the complex, dark layers of man's motivations and acts in responding to such martial ideals as fame, honor, success, or triumph. By making an effective characterization of four major figures such as Suwarrow, Juan, Johnson, and the Turkish Khan, Byron, indeed, enriches the poem with a variety of their different conceptions and stances toward these remarkable achievements. While fighting in the same battle, they, interestingly, reveal strikingly different attitudes, especially in responding to the complex aspects of reputation, glory, war, manliness or fate. The article also considers how the two Cantos of Don Juan feature the ironic results of the characters' quest for glory, which bring about an extensive range of inhuman consequences. The poet accentuates the diverse, negative aftermaths of their illusionary, abusive pursuit of fame and honor. In doing so, he effectively utilizes figurative portrayals of brutal pictures to highlight the unanticipated boundaries and dreadful outcomes, which have been caused by the undesirable or irrational exercises of their freedom of choice in pursuing such self-centered desires and renown.

  • The Galois ring is a finite extension of the ring of integers modulo a prime power. We consider characters on Galois rings. In analogy with finite fields, we investigate complete Gauss sums over Galois rings. In particular, we analyze [1, Proposition 3] and give some lemmas related to [1, Proposition 3].

  • In this paper, we implement a virtual keyboard using infrared distance sensor. A virtual keyboard allows a user to enter characters by selecting keyboard layouts with sensing areas. By projecting infrared light on any flat surface and detection devices we can sense the user's input characters. Unlike a conventional physical keyboard, the virtual keyboard provides convenience in terms of mobility, portability, and space savings.

  • For the efficient teaching of Korean characters(Hangul) handwriting method, it needs to the collection of Hangul handwriting samples and the study of analysis methods. For the collection of Hangul handwriting samples, the students of teacher's university take part in this survey. The analysis is performed according to the characters and graphemes in Hangul. The analysis features include the number of strokes, the direction of handwriting, the relational position of graphemes, the height and width of characters, and so on. The results of this analysis will be used for the reference data for the teaching of Hangul handwritings, the study of Hangul fonts, and the research of Hangul information engineering.
