Species Identification of Tripitaka Koreana (팔만대장경판(八萬大藏經板)의 수종(樹種))

  • Tripitaka Koreana was made during Koryo Dynasty from 1236 to 1251 A.D. Buddhist scriptures were engraved on 81.340 wooden plates. This study was made to identify species in these archaeological wooden plates using light and scanning electron microscopes. The results were as follows more than 62% of whole specimens investigated was Prunus sp., which was used in wooden plate 64% and wooden plate edge 56%, Pyrus sp. was used 13% of whole specimens and 31% of wooden plates. Therefore, 75% of whole Tripitaka Koreana was made by these two species. Acer sp., Betula sp., Machilus sp., Cornus sp., Daphnilhyllum sp., Prunus sp. were also identified but extreamly rare. Especially Machilus sp. and Daphnilhyllum sp. originally distributed in subtropical zone of west and south coast in Korea were identified, suggested strongly another engraving place of Tripitaka Koreana, Namhae bunsadogam.

  • This study is the investigation of the tree type of six waterlogged archaeological wood excavated from the remains related to Yun Sundo in Bogildo, Wando Island; the remains had been excavated and surveyed by Jeonnam Cultural property Research Center. The identification result was four Pinus sp. (hard pine), one loquat and one Symplocaceae. All the identified tree types are subtropical ones and they are common in Bogildo, Wando Island.

  • Tripitaka Koreana were made during Coryo Dynasty from 1236 to 1251 A.D. Buddhist scriptures were engraved on 81.340 wooden plates. Some plates were varnished with Rhus lacquer, but most of them were uncoated. Macroscopically, most of the plates appeared intact due to the storage in a well-ventilated wooden house. Because, they were irregularly used for printings with ink, it can be assumed that they were repeatedly exposed to ink-water and drying processes. The present were made to examine the changes of wood cell structures occurred during long-term aging deterioration processes in these dry archaeological wooden plates. Light, scanning and transmission electron microscopes were employed for this study. Wedge-shaped cracks and delamilations were found from the lumen side toward the compound middle lamellae and they progressed toward primary or secondary walls. A large amount of hypae in vessels and the degradation of vessel-ray pit walls by the fungal hyphae were observed. When compared to the recent wood, the birefringence of wood fibers was considerably lower or completly disappeared, suggesting the degradation of crystalline cellulose in these wood samples. The degradation of the cell wall could be also revealed the calculation of crystallinity with X-ray diffraction and the size of crystalline region was estimated.

  • The ancient biomolecular remains are the potential source for paleobiology and paleoanthropology. Especially, ancient human specimens such as bone, teeth, and hair are powerful materials to identify historical origin and migration of ancestor population from the past. However, most excavated human specimens in archaeological sites have commonly problems as natural damage and exogenous contamination. We carried out histological and molecular analyses of excavated bone from the historic sites in South Korea from the recently discovered in tumulus of Seochun and Naju. Biological deterioration of bone was observed anatomically by optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). We extracted degraded DNA, and amplified hyper variable region (HVR) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and amelogenin of nucleus DNA. This study applied and examined the relationships between histological preservation and DNA survival in excavated bone.

A parasitological study on the possible toilet ruins of the Japanese colonial period in Korea

  • In the past decade, experts have conducted parasitological research on archaeological specimens in Korea to collect historical parasite infection data. In these studies, parasitologists successfully described the infection pattern of each parasite species in history. However, in the first half of the 20th century, archaeoparasitological reports have been scant. In 2021, we conducted a parasitological examination of a toilet-like structure that emerged in the early 20th century. This structure was built by stacking 2 wooden barrels; and in the study samples, we found ancient Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides (unfertilized), and Taenia spp. eggs and therefore proposed a higher possibility that the barrels could have been used as a toilet at the time. To understand how the antihelminthic campaign since the 1960s helped reduce parasite infection rates in Korea, more research should focus on early-20th-century toilet ruins.

  • Studies on ancient ironmaking technologies are primarily based on archaeological surveys and scientific analysis data, and technological systems are examined by comparing the results of restorative experiments. In this study, to examine the ancient iron production technologies such as smelting and smithing in the Jungwon area, a restoration experiment was conducted based on archaeological data, and the iron and slag, etc. produced in the experiment were analyzed. Further, the changes in physicochemical properties due to the smelting of the raw material, specifically, iron ore were determined, and the smithing process, which involves fabrication of ironwares, was analyzed along with the characteristics of each step. In the case of smelting, increasing recovery rates and production of high-quality primary iron material were important for the following processes. For the iron bars produced through the smithing process, it was found that quality improvements made by reducing physical defects such as inclusions or gas holes were more important than the composition of the iron itself. The study also yielded comparative study data for various byproducts, such as smithing slag, which could be utilized in other ironmaking technology studies.

A TOF-SIMS Study of Artificially Photoaged Silk Fabrics

  • Scientific investigation of cultural heritage can provide important information to understand the context of the object. To know the characteristics of the material is also an essential part of objects management and conservation. However, the identification and characterization of organic dyes used in archaeological and historical textiles are often limited by the restrictions in sampling. To cope with the difficulties, applications of high-performance techniques of surface analysis, such as Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectra (TOF-SIMS) could be considered as a non or micro-destructive option. This study aims to examine the applicability of TOF-SIMS analysis to the detection of organic dyes from historical textiles. A group of silk fabrics dyed with vegetable dyes were artificially photo-aged to different degrees and analyzed with TOF-SIMS. Molecular and fragment ions from indigo were successfully detected from the aged samples; however, only some fragment ions were observed from gardenia and safflower dyed fabrics. Further studies with actual historical samples with extended examination scope would be necessary to assess the validity of this technique.

Freeze drying of a Wooden Comb Excavated at Shinchang-dong Wetland Site with Cetylalcohol (세틸알콜을 이용한 광주 신창동 저습지 출토 목제 빗의 동결건조)

  • A wooden Comb excavated at Shinchang-dong wetland site was treated with cetylalcohol as a reinforcing agent. The conservation process was done by freeze drying the wooden artifact after substituting it with no.3 butyl alcohol and impregnating with 40wt% cetylalcohol solution. Consequently there was no noticeable surface damage. Also it showed 54% of remaining weight and a shrinkage of length 3.3%, width 2.1% and thickness 3.1%. Therefore using cetylalcohol for conservation of waterlogged archeological wood was effective dimensional stability and remaining weight.

Analysis of ambers with different origin by IR and py/GC/MS (산지별 호박(amber)의 IR 및 py/GC/MS 특성 분석)

  • Ambers have been used as a gemstone and a religious object since the ancient times and found in several archaeological sites in Korea. To prepare an enhanced conservation measures, we surveyed the chemical and spectroscopic properties of the ambers according to the provenance. Total 14 amber samples were collected from 6 different provenances including Baltic, Chiapas, Colombian, Dominican, Fushun and Madagascar amber. Infrared (IR) spectroscopic analysis was conducted for the non-destructive examination of the amber samples. They were also analyzed with pyrolysis/GC/MS (py/GC/MS) at the pyrolysis temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ with the on-line derivatization to trimethylsilyl ester. Baltic shoulder corresponding to the absorption at $1250cm^{-1}{\sim}1150cm^{-1}$ appeared in the IR spectrum of Baltic amber. IR spectra of the other ambers also showed somewhat distinctive characteristic peaks. In py/GC/MS analysis peaks assignable to succinic acid, dehydroabietic acid and pimaric acid were detected, which are known to be the components of the amber. In the meanwhile, the presence of compounds appearing in certain amber will be applied to differentiate the provenances of amber relics if their fragments are available for the analysis. These results are expected to help the confirmation of archaeological amber relics and archaeometric interpretation of provenances and manufacturing techniques.

  • The possibility of non-destructive inspection glass beads for verification.
