In this paper, we propose an efficient channel delay estimation method for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, especially over doubly-selective fading channels which are selective in both the symbol time domain and subcarrier frequency domain. For the doubly-selective fading channels in single frequency network (SFN), long and strong echoes exist and thus the conventional discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) based channel delay estimation system often fails to produce the exact channel delay profile. Based on the analysis of the discrete-time frequency response of the channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients in the DFT-based channel delay estimation system, we develop a method to effectively extract the true CIR from the aliased signals by employing a simple narrow-band low-pass filter (NB-LPF). The performance of the proposed system is verified using the COST207 TU6 SFN channel model.

Models for the phase noise and jitter of the ring oscillator with the power supply noise are suggested and verified by simulations. The power supply noise is converted into the phase-noise by the narrow band phase modulation. The phase-noise appears as sideband frequencies apart from the center frequency of the ring oscillator as much as the frequency of the power supply noise. A jitter model describing the linear relation of jitter with the amplitude of the power supply noise is suggested and verified by simulation.
Hyperspectral images feature a relatively narrow band and are easily disturbed by noise. Accurate estimation of the types and parameters of noise in hyperspectral images can provide prior knowledge for subsequent image processing. Existing hyperspectral-noise estimation methods often pay more attention to the use of spectral information while ignoring the spatial information of hyperspectral images. To evaluate the noise in hyperspectral images more accurately, we have proposed a spectral-spatial cooperative noise-evaluation method. First, the feature of spatial information was extracted by Gabor-filter and K-means algorithms. Then, texture edges were extracted by the Otsu threshold algorithm, and homogeneous image blocks were automatically separated. After that, signal and noise values for each pixel in homogeneous blocks were split with a multiple-linear-regression model. By experiments with both simulated and real hyperspectral images, the proposed method was demonstrated to be effective and accurate, and the composition of the hyperspectral image was verified.

Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) is a diversity scheme used in OFDM-based telecommunication systems, transforming spatial diversity into frequency diversity and thus avoiding intersymbol interference without entailing the receiver to be aware of the transmission strategy making the signal more reliable achieving full diversity gain in cooperative systems. Here the analyzation of the influence of CDD-SC scheme in Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) is done with the challenge of overcoming the complication called channel estimation along with overhead in CNR. More specifically, the closed-form expressions for outage probability and symbol error rate are divided under different frequencies among independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) frequency selective fading channel model i.e., the signal is divided into different frequencies and transmitted among several narrow band channels of different characteristics. It is useful in the reduction of interference and crosstalk. The results reveal the diversity order of the proposed system to be mainly affected by the number of multipath components that are available in the CNR.
Modern high-rise tower designs incorporating recessed balcony cavity spaces can be prone to high-frequency and narrow-band Rossiter aerodynamic excitations under glancing incident winds that can harmonize and compete with recessed balcony volume acoustic Helmholtz modes and facade elastic responses. Resulting resonant inertial wind loading to balcony facades responding to these excitations is additive to the peak design wind pressures currently allowed for in wind codes and can present as excessive facade vibrations and sub-audible throbbing in the serviceability range of wind speeds. This paper presents a methodology to determine Cavity Amplification Factors to account for façade resonant inertial wind loads resulting from balcony cavity aero-acoustic-elastic resonances by drawing upon field observations and the results of full-scale monitoring and model-scale wind tunnel tests. Recessed balcony cavities with single orifice type openings and located within curved façade tower geometries appear particularly prone. A Cavity Amplification Factor of 1.8 is calculated in one example representing almost a doubling of local façade design wind pressures. Balcony façade and tower design recommendations to mitigate wind induced aero-acoustic-elastic resonances are provided.
The quality of MT (magnetotellurics) data highly depends on the level of artificial noise form industrial sources. We have conducted the feasibility study of MT noise modelling using digital spatial data and spatial modelling through the comparison between the predicted and the measured MT noises. A simple noise model predicting the intensity of electromagnetic field radiated from the latent noise sources, that is, the electric facilities in the building, road and high-voltage powerline, is developed in consideration of the propagation property of electromagnetic waves. From the analysis of correlation between the predicted and the measured noise power, the correlation coefficients of electric field are higher than those of magnetic field in whole frequency band. The magnetic field component has the high correlation in the narrow band near 60 Hz only. The spatial noise modelling proposed in this study would provide some useful informations for the MT surveys in the noisy environment like urban area.

Suppressing lattice thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials is one of the most popular approach to improve their thermoelectric performance. However, accurate characterization of suppressed lattice thermal conductivity is challenging as it can only be acquired by subtracting other contributions to thermal conductivity from the total thermal conductivity. Here we explain that electronic thermal conductivity (for all materials) and bipolar thermal conductivity (for narrow band gap materials) need to be determined accurately first to characterize the lattice thermal conductivity accurately. Methods to calculate Lorenz number for electronic thermal conductivity (via single parabolic model and using a simple equation) and bipolar thermal conductivity (via two-band model) are introduced. Accurate characterization of the lattice thermal conductivity provides a powerful tool to accurately evaluate effect of different defect engineering strategies.

This research proposes a method to estimate the fatigue life of SSD(solid-state drive) due to the effect of dummy solder ball under forced vibration. A finite element model of the SSD was developed to simulate the forced vibration and a modal testing was performed to verify the developed finite element model. Fatigue life of the SSD under vibration was experimentally determined according to JEDEC standard in which the SSD was excited by a sinusoidal sweep vibration within the narrow frequency band around the first natural frequency until the SSD fails. Basquin's equation was introduced to estimate the fatigue life of the SSD due to the effect of dummy solder balls. It shows that the dummy solder balls are effective elements of the SSD to increase the fatigue life of an SSD by increasing 700 times of the fatigue life of the given SSD.
An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper we present a two-dimensional edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. We use a new lattice BGK compressible fluid model that has an additional term and allow larger time increment comparing a conventional FDLB model, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}=23^{\circ}$ . At a stand-off distance ${\omega}$ , the edge is inserted along the centreline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency f is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and to propagate towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations result from periodically oscillation of jet around the edge. That pressure fluctuations propagate with the sound speed. Its interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.

In this paper, we present a new geometric active contour model based on level set methods introduced by Osher and Sethian for detection of object boundaries or shape and we adopt anisotropic diffusion filtering method for removing noise from original image. In order to minimize the processing time, we use the narrow band method which allows us to perform calculations in the neighborhood of the contour and not in the whole image. Using anisotropic diffusion filtering for each slice, we have the result with reduced noise and extracted exact shape. Volume rendering operates on three-dimensional data, processes it, and transforms it into a simple two-dimensional image.
