  • Easy and simple synthesis of CdSe nanocrystals was achieved through sol-gel process. CdSe nanocrystals were synthesized from the reaction of cadmium oxide and selenium in the prescence of trioctylphosphine oxide, tributylphosphine, octadecene, octadecylamine, and stearic acid. The effect of reaction temperature for the determination of size of CdSe nanocrystals was investigated after the addition of selenium. The reaction temperature for the growth of CdSe nanocrystals was increased by every $20^{\circ}C$ from 170 to 190, 210, 230, 250, 270, and $290^{\circ}C$. When the reaction temperature was higher, the absorption wavelength in the absorption spectrum was increased which indicated that the size of CdSe nanocrystals was increased. The emission wavelength in the photoluminescence spectrum was increased from 438 to 489, 542, 591, 643, 692, and 745 nm, as the size of CdSe nanocrystals was increased. The control of the reaction temperature illustrated that the color tuning of emission wavelength were successfully obtained.

  • TiO$_2$ nanoparticles were prepared by photochemical synthesis in the dry toluene. The shape and size of the amorphous TiO$_2$ nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscope. The particle size was varied by the contents of the titanium (IV) isopropoxide in dry toluene. Especially networked TiO$_2$ particles were formed from 40% titanium (IV) isopropoxide solution. The optical absorption spectra, photoluminescence, and PL excitation spectra of TiO$_2$ in dry toluene were obtained. The were shifted to the short wavelength as the contents of TiO$_2$ were increased. PL excitation had the peak at the wavelength regions is which the absorption increased steeply.

  • New materials are very useful due to their wide range of applications, however, they also have caused new pollutants that damage our environment. Chemists have been conscious of the severity of these environmental problems and a great deal of effort has been put into developing environmentally benign chemical processes to synthesize new materials (green synthesis). We also have reported a green synthesis method of synthesizing silver nanoparticles using water-glycerol solution in a previous study. While conducting further research, we have recently discovered that the size of silver nanoparticles is proportional to the quantity of water present in glycerol. This method is completely benign and ecofriendly pathway, as the size of silver nanoparticles is adjusted solely by controlling the quantity of water added to glycerol, without extra additives and energy.

  • In this study, we report the one-pot synthesis of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) containing platinum nanoparticles with catalytic activity to break down hydrogen peroxide as a peroxidase-mimicking catalyst. A single reducing agent was used to reduce graphene oxide and a platinum precursor at a moderately low temperature of 70℃. The rGO was homogeneously decorated with platinum nanoparticles. The catalytic activity of Pt-rGO was investigated for the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), a peroxidase substrate, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The Pt-rGO coupled with glucose oxidase was also able to detect glucose at millimolar concentrations (up to 1 mM). Our results show that the Pt-rGO composite is a promising catalyst for the detection of hydrogen peroxide. This method was also applied for the detection of glucose.

  • On the synthesis of Au/$TiO_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticle, the effect of concentration of $Ti^{4+}$ and reaction temperature on the morphology and optical property of Au/$TiO_2$ core-shell nanoparticles is examined. A gold colloid was prepared by $HAuCl_4{\cdot}4H_2O\;and\;C_6H_5Na_3{\cdot}2H_2O$. Titanium stock solution was prepared by mixing solution of titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) and triethanolamine (TEOA). The concentrations of $Ti^{4+}$ stock solution were adjusted to $10.01{\sim}0.3$ mM, and then the gold colloid is added to the $Ti^{4+}$ stock solution. Au/$TiO_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticles could be prepared by the hydrolysis of the $Ti^{4+}$ stock solution at $80^{\circ}C$. The size of synthesized Au nanoparticles was 15 nm. The thickness of $TiO_2$ shell on the surface of gold particles was about 10 nm. The absorption peak of synthesized Au/$TiO_2$ core-shell nanoparticles shifted towards the red end of the spectrum by about 3 nm because of the formation of $TiO_2$ shell on the surface of gold particles. The good $TiO_2$ shell is produced when $Ti^{4+}$ concentration is varied between 0.01 and 0.05 mM, and reaction temperature is maintained at $80^{\circ}C$. The crystal structure of $TiO_2$ shell was amorphous.

  • $CoSb_3$ with its high electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and rather low thermal conductivity is quite a promising material for thermoelectric conversion applications. A potentially high figure of merit (ZT) can be achieved by a nanostructure evolution of thermoelectric materials. In this work, $CoSb_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized through a thermal decomposition method in cooperation with a hot injection technique. Nano-sized $CoSb_3$ particles were obtained through the thermal decomposition reaction between the pre-heated cobalt-oleate at $320^{\circ}C$ and the injected antimony oleate with room temperature. The results showed that the particle size was increased with increasing synthesis temperature and the crystallinity of particles was improved with temperature but the decomposition of $CoSb_3$ was observed at $320^{\circ}C$. The $CoSb_3$ particles synthesized at $300^{\circ}C$ showed a high purity and an homogeneous shape with average particle size of 26 nm.

  • Conventional paints for conversion coating applications in steel production derived mainly from water-based polymer dispersions containing several additives actually show good general performance, but suffer from poor scratch and abrasion resistance during use. The reason for this is because the relatively soft organic binder matrix dominates the mechanical surface properties. In order to maintain the high quality and decorative function of coated steel sheets, the mechanical performance of the surface needs to be improved significantly. In fact the wear resistance should be enhanced without affecting the optical appearance of the coatings by using appropriate nanoparticulate additives. In this direction, nanocomposite coating compositions (Nanomer$^{(R)}$) have been derived from water-based polymer dispersions with an increasing amount of surface-modified nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion in order to monitor the effect of degree of filling with rigid nanoparticles. The surface of nanoparticles has been modified for optimum compatibility with the polymer matrix in order to achieve homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion over the matrix. This approach has been extended in such a way that a more expanded hybrid network has been condensed on the nanoparticle surface by a hydrolytic condensation reaction in addition to the quasi-monolayer type small molecular surface modification. It was expected that this additional modification will lead to more intensive cross-linking in coating systems resulting in further improved scratch-resistance compared to simple addition of nanoparticles with quasi-monolayer surface modification. The resulting compositions have been coated on zinc-galvanized steel and cured. The wear resistance and the corrosion protection of the modified coating systems have been tested in dependence on the compositional change, the type of surface modification as well as the mixing conditions with different shear forces. It has been found out that for loading levels up to 50 wt.-% nanoparticles, the mechanical wear resistance remains almost unaffected compared to the unmodified resin. In addition, the corrosion resistance remained unaffected even after $180^{\circ}$ bending test showing that the flexibility of coating was not decreased by nanoparticle addition. Electron microscopy showed that the inorganic nanoparticles do not penetrate into the organic resin droplets during the mixing process but rather formed agglomerates outside the polymer droplet phase resulting in quite moderate cross linking while curing, because of viscosity. The proposed mechanisms of composite formation and cross linking could explain the poor effect regarding improvement of mechanical wear resistance and help to set up new synthesis strategies for improved nanocomposite morphologies, which should provide increased wear resistance.

  • For both oxygen reduction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), alloying Pt with another transition metal usually results in a higher activity relative to pure Pt, mainly due to electronic modification of Pt and bifunctional behaviour of alloy surface for ORR and HOR, respectively. However, activity and stability are closely related to the preparation of alloy nanoparticles. Preparation conditions of alloy nanoparticles have strong influence on surface composition, oxidation state, nanoparticle size, shape, and contamination, which result from a large difference in redox priority of metal precursors, intrinsic properties of metals, increasedreactivity of nanocrystallites, and interactions with constituents for the synthesis such as solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent, etc. Carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles were prepared by the borohydride reduction method in anhydrous solvent. Pt-Ru alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon black were also prepared by the similar synthetic method to that of Pt-Ni. Since electrocatalytic reactions are strongly dependent on the surface structure of metal catalysts, the atom-leveled design of the surface structure plays a significant role in a high catalytic activity and the utilization of electrocatalysts. Therefore, surface-modified electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their unique structure and new electronic and electrocatalytic properties. The carbon-supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were adapted as the substrate and the successive reduction process was used for depositing Pt and PtM (M=Ru, Pd, and Rh) bimetallic elements on the surface of Au and Pd nanoparticles. Distinct features of the overlayers for electrocatalytic activities including methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, and oxygen reduction were investigated.

  • $Fe_3O_4$ and $CoFe_2O_4$ magnetic nanoparticles have been synthesized successfully in aqueous solution and coated with oleic acid. The solid and organic solution of the synthesized nanoparticles was obtained. Self-assembled monolayer films were formed using organic solution of these nanoparticles. The crystal sizes determined by Debye-Scherre equation with XRD data were found close to the particle sizes calculated from TEM images, and this indicates that the synthesized particles are nanocrystalline. Especially, EDS, ED, FT-IR, TGA/DTA and DSC were used to characterize the nanoparticles and the oleic acid adsorption, and it was found that oleic acid molecule on the $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticle is a bilayer adsorption, while that on $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticle is single layer adsorption. The superparamagnetic behavior of the nanoparticles was documented by the hysteresis loop measured at 300 K.

  • The fabrication, characterization and manipulation of nanoparticle system brings together physics, chemistry, materials science and biology in an unprecedented way. Phenomena occurring in such systems are fundamental to the workings of electronic devices, but also to living organisms. The ability to fabricate the surface of nanoparticles Is essential in the further development of functional devices that incorporate nanoscale features. Even more essential is the ability to introduce a wide range of chemical and materials flexibility into these structures to build up more complex nanostructures that can ultimately rival biological nanosystems. In this respect, polymers are potentially ideal nanoscale building blocks because of their length scale, well-defined architecture, controlled synthesis, ease of processing and wide range of chemical functionality that can be incorporated. In this presentation, we will look at a number of promising polymer-based nanoparticle fabrication strategies that have been developed recently, with an emphasis on those techniques that incorporate nanostructured polymeric particles into electronic devices or biomedical applications. And functional nanoparticles deliberately designed using several powerful process methods and their application will be discussed. Nanostructured nanoparticles, what we called, implies dispersed colloids with the size ranged from several nanometers to hundreds of nanometer. They have extremely large surface area, thus it is very important to control the morphology or surface functionality fitted for adequate objectives and properties. Their properties should be controlled for various kind of bio-related technologies, such as immunomagnetic cell separation, drug delivery systems, labeling and identification of lymphocyte populations, extracorporeal and hemoperfusion systems, etc. Well-defined polymeric nanoparticles can be considered as smart bomb or MEMS.
