The crystal structure of nano-crystalline, $BaTiO_3$, with the average particle size of 100 nm was investigated using electron diffraction techniques. We characterized the precession electron diffraction system and then carried out the structure determination using precession electron diffraction and conventional selected area electron diffraction. As a result, it was revealed that $BaTiO_3$ nano-crystalline exist as a mixture of tetragonal structure and cubic structure by precession electron diffraction technique. In addition, it could be turned out that $BaTiO_3$ nano-crystalline is a core-shell structure consisted of a tetragonal phased core and a cubic phased surface layer by theoretical calculation. The thickness of the cubic surface layer was approximately 8.5 nm and the lattice parameters of cubic and tetragonal phases were a=3.999${\AA}$ and a=3.999${\AA}$, c=4.022${\AA}$, respectively. Finally, it is expected that precession electron diffraction is more useful technique for structure determination of complicated nano-crystalline materials because of its higher spatial resolution and minimization of dynamical scattering effect.

GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are attracting great interest as candidates for next-generation solid-state lighting, because of their long lifetime, small size, high efficacy, and low energy consumption. However, for general illumination applications, the external quantum efficiency of LEDs, determined by the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and the light extraction efficiency, must be further increased. The IQE is determined by crystal quality and epitaxial layer structure and high value of IQE more than 70% for blue LEDs have been already reported. However, there is much room for improvement of light extraction efficiency because most of the generated photons from active layer remain inside LEDs by total internal reflection at the interface of semiconductor with air due to the high refractive index difference between LEDs epilayer (for GaN, n=2.5) and air (n=1). The light confining in LEDs will be reabsorbed by the metal electrode or active layer, reducing the efficacy of LEDs. Here, we present the first demonstration of enhanced light extraction by forming a MgO nano-pyramids structure on the surface of vertical-LEDs. The MgO nano-pyramids structure was successfully fabricated at room temperature using conventional electron-beam evaporation without any additional process. The nano-sized pyramids of MgO are formed on the surface during growth due to anisotropic characteristics between (111) and (200) plane of MgO. The ZnO layer with quarter-wavelength in thickness is inserted between GaN and MgO layers to increase the critical angle for total internal reflection, because the refractive index of ZnO (n=1.94) could be matched between GaN (n=2.5) and MgO (n=1.73). The MgO nano-pyramids structure and ZnO refractive-index modulation layer enhanced the light extraction efficiency ofV-LEDs with by 49%, comparing with the V-LEDs with a flat n-GaN surface. The angular-dependent emission intensity shows the enhanced light extraction through the side walls of V-LEDs as well as through the top surface of the n-GaN, because of the increase in critical angle for total internal reflection as well as light scattering at the MgO nano-pyramids surface.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been explored recently as a promising approach to increase energy conversion efficiency in photovoltaic devices, particularly for thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells. The LSPR is frequently excited via an electromagnetic (EM) radiation in proximate metallic nanostructures and its primary con sequences are selective photon extinction and local EM enhancement which gives rise to improved photogeneration of electron-hole (e-h) pairs, and consequently increases photocurrent. In this work, high-dielectric-constant (k) $ZrO_2$ (refractive index n=2.22, dielectric constant $\varepsilon=4.93$ at the wavelength of 550 nm) is proposed as spacing layer to enhance the LSPR for application to the thin film silicon solar cells. Compared to excitation of the LSPR using $SiO_2$ (n=1.46, $\varepsilon=2.13$ at the wavelength of 546.1 nm) spacing layer with Au nanoparticles of the radius of 45nm, that using $ZrO_2$ dielectric shows the advantages of(i) ~2.5 times greater polarizability, (ii) ~3.5 times larger scattering cross-section and ~1.5 times larger absorption cross-section, (iii) 4.5% higher transmission coefficient of the same thickness and (iv) 7.8% greater transmitted electric filed intensity at the same depth. All those results are calculated by Mie theory and Fresnel equations, and simulated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations with proper boundary conditions. Red-shifting of the LSPR wavelength using high-k $ZrO_2$ dielectric is also observed according to location of the peak and this is consistent with the other's report. Finally, our experimental results show that variation of short-circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) of the LSPR enhanced a-Si:H solar cell by using the $ZrO_2$ spacing layer is 45.4% higher than that using the $SiO_2$ spacing layer, supporting our calculation and theory.

Superparamagnetic regions and magnetic anisotropic properties in randomly orientated Co nano dots(NDs) were investigated as a function of dot diameter, spacing, and density. The Co NDs were fabricated by intentionally exposing a laser source on ultra thin film. Various dot sizes are ultimately realized by changing laser power, scan condition, and intial film thickness. Magnetic hysteresis loops, angle-dependent magnetization, and temperature dependence magnetization of the Co NDs were measured with a superconducting quantum interference device. The analysis of magnetization and hysteresis loops was effectively used to determine superparamagnetic regions of the Co NDs. Up to now, the experimentally observed results repeal that room temperature superparamagnetic limit of our Co NDs was about 30 nm in diameter, with the confirmation of high resolution transmission electron microscope.

Inverter surge resistant enameled wire was prepared with an organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposite, and the effect of ambient temperature on the insulation lifetime of the enameled wire in the form of twisted pair was studied by a withstanding voltage tester. The organic polymer was Polyesterimide-polyamideimide (EI/AI) and the inorganic material was a Nano-sized silica (average particle size : 15 nm). The enamel thickness was 50 μm and the ambient temperature was 100, 150, 200, and 250, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that Nano-sized Silica were evenly dispersed in EI/AI. There were many air gaps in a twisted pair, therefore, when voltage was applied to the twisted pair, enamel erosion took place in the air gap area because of partial discharge accordi, ng to Paschen’s law. As ambient temperature increased, insulation lifetime decreased according to Arrhenius relationship, which was explained by the increasing mobility of polymer chains in EI or AI. And insulation breakdown voltage value at 10 kHz was 1,864.5 sec (31.1 min), which is 1.9 times higher than at 20 kHz, 981.6 sec (16.4 min).

AlN thin films were deposited on p-type Si(100) substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method. This study showed the change of the preferential orientation of AlN thin films deposition with the change of the deposition conditions such as sputtering pressure and Ar/N2 gas ratio in chamber. It was identified by X-ray diffraction patterns that AlN thin film deposited at low sputtering pressure has a (002) orientation, however its preferred orientation was changed from the (002) to the (100) orientation with increasing sputtering pressure. Also, it was observed that the properties of AlN thin films such as thickness, grain size and surface roughness were largely dependent on Ar/$N_2$ gas ratio and a high quality thin film could be prepared at lower nitrogen concentration. AlN thin films were investigated relationship between preferential orientation and deposition condition by using XRD, FE-SEM and PFM.
In this research, beside presenting real images of produced Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Composites (FG-CNTRCs) and a brief review of the synthesis method of FG-CNTRCs, static and buckling analysis of FG-CNTRC with piezoelectric layers are investigated. It is assumed that the material properties of FG-CNTRC are varied through the thickness direction using four different distributions of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs). To capture the size effects, nonlocal elasticity theory proposed by A.C. Eringen is also adopted in our model. One of the topics in our paper is using a higher order theory with eight different displacement fields and comparing their results with each other. To solve the governing equations, an analytical method is used to find the deflections and critical buckling loads of FG-CNTRCs. To show the accuracy of present methodology, our results are compared with the results of simply supported rectangular nano plates available in the literature. In this research, the effects of aspect ratio, piezoelectric layer and nonlocal parameter are also studied. It is hoped that this work leads to more accurate models on FG-CNTRC.
This paper investigates the effect of linear and non-linear distribution of carbon nanotube volume fraction in the FG-CNTRC beams on the critical buckling by using higher-order shear deformation theories. Here, the material properties of the CNTRC beams are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a new exponential power law distribution in terms of the carbon nanotube volume fractions. The single-walled carbon nanotube is aligned and distributed in the polymeric matrix with different patterns of reinforcement; the material properties of the CNTRC beams are described by using the rule of mixture. The governing equations are derived through using Hamilton's principle. The Navier solution method is used under the specified boundary conditions for simply supported CNTRC beams. The mathematical models provided in this work are numerically validated by comparison with some available results. New results of critical buckling with the non-linear distribution of CNT volume fraction in different patterns are presented and discussed in detail, and compared with the linear distribution. Several aspects of beam types, CNT volume fraction, exponent degree (n), aspect ratio, etc., are taken into this investigation. It is revealed that the influences of non-linearity distribution in the beam play an important role to improve the mechanical properties, especially in buckling behavior. The results show that the X-Beam configuration is the strongest among all different types of CNTRC beams in supporting the buckling loads.
A porous nickel-tin nano-dendritic electrode, for use as the anode in a rechargeable lithium battery, has been prepared by using an electrochemical deposition process. The adjustment of the complexing agent content in the deposition bath enabled the nickel-tin alloys to have specific stoichiometries while the amount of acid, as a dynamic template for micro-porous structure, was limited to a certain amount to prevent its undesirable side reaction with the complexing agent. The ratios of nickel to tin in the electro-deposits were nearly identical to the ratios of nickel ion to tin ion in the deposition bath; the particle changed from spherical to dendritic shape according to the tin content in the deposits. The nickel to tin ratio and the dendritic structure were quite uniform throughout the thickness of the deposits. The resulting nickel-tin alloy was reversibly lithiated and delithiated as an anode in rechargeable lithium battery. Furthermore, the resulting anode showed much more stable cycling performance up to 50 cycles, as compared to that resulting from dense electro-deposit with the same atomic composition and from tin electrodeposit with a similar porous structure. From the results, it is expected that highly-porous nickel-tin alloys presented in this work could provide a promising option for the high performance anode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries.

Titanium nitride (TiN) thin films are widely used for hard coatings due to their superior hardness, chemical stability, low friction and good adhesion properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of DC power on the characteristics of TiN thin films deposited on Si and glass substrates by DC magnetron sputtering using TiN target. We made TiN films of 300 nm thickness with various DC powers. The structural properties of films are investigated by x-ray diffractions (XRD) and tribological properties are measured by nano-indentation, nano-scratch tester. The rms roughness was measured by atomic forced microscopy (AFM). In the result, TiN films had the smooth surface and exhibited (111) directions with the increase of DC Power. Also, especially in case of 175 W DC power, TiN film exhibited the maximum hardness about 8 GPa, and the critical load near 25.
