  • Nano-sized ${\beta}$-SiC nanoparticles were synthesized combined with a sol-gel process and a carbothermal process. TEOS and carbon black were used as starting materials for the silicon source and carbon source, respectively. $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized using a sol-gel technique (Stober process) combined with hydrolysis and condensation. The size of the particles could be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) within the micro-emulsion. The average particle size and morphology of synthesized silicon dioxide was about 100nm and spherical, respectively. The average particles size and morphology of the used carbon black powders was about 20nm and spherical, respectively. The molar ratio of silicon dioxide and carbon black was fixed to 1:3 in the preparation of each combination. $SiO_2$ and carbon black powders were mixed in ethanol and ball-milled for 12 h. After mixing, the slurries were dried at $80^{\circ}C$ in an oven. The dried powder mixtures were placed in alumina crucibles and synthesized in a tube furnace at $1400{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ for 4 h with a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C$/min under flowing Ar gas (160 cc/min) and furnace cooling down to room temperature. SiC nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM, and SAED. The XRD results showed that high purity beta silicon carbide with excellent crystallinity was synthesized. TEM revealed that the powders are spherical shape nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 15 to 30 nm with a narrow distribution.

  • Recently graphene has emerged as a fascinating 2D system in condensed-matter physics as well as a new material for the development of nanotechnology. The unusual electronic band structure of graphene allows it to exhibit a strong ambipolar electric field effect with high mobility. These properties lead to the possibility of its application in high-performance transparent conducting films (TCFs). Compared to indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, which have a typical sheet resistance of ${\sim}60{\Omega}$/sq and ~85 % transmittance in the visible range (400?900 nm), the CVD-grown graphene electrodes have a higher/flatter transmittance in the visible to IR region and are more robust under bending. Nevertheless, the lowest sheet resistance of the currently available CVD graphene electrodes is higher than that of ITO. Here, we report an ingenious strategy, irradiation of MeV electron beam (e-beam) at room temperature under ambient condition, for obtaining size-homogeneous gold nanoparticle decorated on graphene. The nano-particlization promoted by MeV e-beam irradiation was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy elemental mapping, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. These results clearly revealed that gold nanoparticle with 10 ~ 15 nm in mean size were decorated along the surface of the graphene after 1.5 MeV-e-beam irradiation. A chemical transformation and charge transfer for the metal gold nanoparticle were systematically explored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. This approach advances the numerous applications of graphene films as transparent conducting electrodes.

  • Carbon atoms near the surface of W(110) induce reconstructions such as $R(15{\times}12)$ -C/W(110) which consists of two characteristic parts, one square shaped and bright protrusion and two smaller ones. In the atomic resolution STM image, the bigger protrusion shows the periodicities of clean W(110), indicating that it is almost carbon poor region. The smaller protrusion contains hexagonal carbide surface layer of ${\alpha}$-W2C on W(110). Employing this carburized W(110) as templates, we grow Co and Fe clusters of less than ten atoms. Due to the selectivity of bonding sites, growth of larger cluster is highly unfavorable for Co and the size of clusters is very uniform. Since Co atoms prefer to sit on the bigger protrusion rather than smaller one, Co cluster can be arranged one-dimensionally in $R(15{\times}12)$-C/W(110) with quite uniform size distribution. However, Fe clusters sit on both sites without favored site, but still with uniform size distribution. On the other hand, Fe clusters can be grown with quasi one-dimensional order in $R(15{\times}3)$-C/W(110), which consists of only smaller protrusions. We investigate the magnetic properties of the ordered nano-sized clusters. Experiments using XMCD reveals little magnetic moment of Co cluster on $R(15{\times}12)$-C/W(110). This observation is consistent with the predictions of our first principles calculations that small Co clusters can be nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic with low mean magnetic moment per atom.

  • Gas hydrate studies are attracting attention of many researchers as an innovative, economic and environmentally friendly technology when it is applied to $CO_2$ capture, transport, and storage. In this study, we investigated whether $CO_2$ hydrate shows the self-preservation effect or not, that is the key property for developing a novel $CO_2$ transport/storage method. Especially the degree of self-preservation effect for $CO_2$ hydrate was studied according to the particle size of $CO_2$ hydrate samples. We prepared three kinds of $CO_2$ hydrate samples varying their particle diameter as millimeter, micron and nano size and measured their change of weight at $-15{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric pressure during 3 weeks. According to our experimental result, the lower temperature, larger particle size, and compact structure for higher density are the better conditions for obtaining self-preservation effect.

  • This study was conducted as a preliminary study for the recycling of palladium and palladium oxide. In this study, thermodynamic equations for the formation of palladium oxide (PdO) are established. Palladium chloride is dissolved into hydrochloric acid to generate a palladium chloride solution. Nanosized palladium oxide powder with an average particle size below 30 nm were generated from this raw material solution by means of a spray pyrolysis process. The palladium oxide particles were composed of a single solid crystal. The results of XRD analysis showed that only a PdO phase of the generated powder was formed. And, the specific surface area of the generated palladium powder was approximately $32m^2/g$.

  • Objectives: Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$), a common nanoparticle widely used in industrial production, is one of nano-sized materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the acute and chronic toxicity of $TiO_2$ using different size and various concentrations on Daphnia magna. Methods: In the acute toxicity test, four concentrations (0, 0.5, 4, and 8 mM) for $TiO_2$ with 250 or 500 nm and five concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mM) for $TiO_2$ with 21 nm were selected to analyze the toxic effect to three groups of ten daphnia neonates over 96 hours. In addition, to better understand their toxicity, chronic toxicity was examined over 21 days using 0, 1, and 10 mM for each type of $TiO_2$. Results: Our results showed that all organisms died before the reproduction time at a concentration of 10 mM of $TiO_2$. In addition, the exposure of anatase (21 nm) particles were more toxic to D. magna, comparing with that of anatase (250 nm) and rutile (500 nm) particles. Conclusions: This study indicated that $TiO_2$ had adverse impacts on the survival, growth and reproduction of D. magna after the 21days exposure. In addition, the number of test organisms that were able to reproduce neonates gradually were reduced as the size of $TiO_2$ tested was decreased.

  • Poly Si TFTs (poly silicon thin film transistors) with p channel those are annealed HT (high temperature) with gate poly crystalline silicon and LT (low temperature) with metal gate electrode were fabricated on quartz substrate using the analyzed data and compared according to the activated grade silicon thin films and the size of device channel. The electrical characteristics of HT poly-Si TFTs increased those are the on current, electron mobility and decrease threshold voltage by the quality of particles of active thin films annealed at high temperature. But the on/off current ratio reduced by increase of the off current depend on the hot carrier applied to high gate voltage. Even though the size of the particles annealed at low temperature are bigger than HT poly-Si TFTs due to defect in the activated grade poly crystal silicon and the grain boundary, the characteristics of LT poly-Si TFTs were investigated deterioration phenomena those are decrease the electric off current, electron mobility and increase threshold voltage. The results of transconductance show that slope depend on the quality of particles and the amplitude depend on the size of the active silicon particles.

  • Here, we report the development of a new and low-cost core-shell structure for lithium-ion battery anodes using silicon waste sludge and the Ti-ion complex. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the raw waste silicon sludge powder to be pure silicon without other metal impurities and the particle size distribution is measured to be from 200 nm to 3 ㎛ by dynamic light scattering (DLS). As a result of pulverization by a planetary mill, the size of the single crystal according to the Scherrer formula is calculated to be 12.1 nm, but the average particle size of the agglomerate is measured to be 123.6 nm. A Si/TiO2 core-shell structure is formed using simple Ti complex ions, and the ratio of TiO2 peaks increased with an increase in the amount of Ti ions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed that TiO2 coating on Si nanoparticles results in a Si-TiO2 core-shell structure. This result is expected to improve the stability and cycle of lithium-ion batteries as anodes.

  • Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a simple liquid phase process for producing ceramics powder using a precursor impregnated with a nickel(II) nitrate hexahydrate aqueous solution in an industrial pulp. The microfibrile structure of the precursor impregnated with nickel nitrate hexahydrate aqueous solution was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the crystal structure and particle size of nickel oxide (NiO) particles produced as the heat treatment temperature of the precursor were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM. As a result, it was confirmed through XRD and SEM analysis that the temperature at which the organic material of the precursor is completely thermally decomposed was 495-500℃, and the size and crystallinity of the nickel oxide particles produced increased as the heat treatment temperature increased. The size of the nickel oxide particles obtained by heat treatment at 500-800℃ for 1 hour was 50-200 nm. It was confirmed by XRD and SEM analysis that a NiO crystal phase was formed at a heat treatment temperature of 380℃, only a single NiO phase existed until 800℃.
