In this study, investigation on the polymerization characteristics of isoprene through nitroxide mediated controlled/"living" radical polymerization techniques was attempted. In the presence of acetol, linear increase of isoprene conversion with time and low polydispersities of the resulting polymers ($M_w/M_n$ < 1.5) were observed, which suggest successful controlled/"living" radical polymerization of isoprene. The microstructure of the resulting polyisoprene was composed of $\sim$ 22% of 3, 4, $\sim$30% of 1, 4-cis and $\sim$ 48% of 1, 4-trans. The optimum polymerization temperature was 145 $^{circ}C$, below which no significant polymerization behavior was observed. Non-cyclic nitroxide, such as di-tert-butyl nitroxide (DTBN) could not mediate the polymerization, whereas cyclic nitroxides (2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-1-peperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) and 4-oxo-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-1-peperidine 1-oxyl (oxoTEMPO)) were successfully employed for the polymerization. However, isoprene dimerization reaction through Diels-Alder process was also observed at the given polymerization condition, which afforded a significant amount of limonene. Isoprene thermal autoinitiation was also possible, which was, however, considered to be not significant under the given polymerization condition.
We investigated the optical and hydrophobic properties of the deposited silver (Ag) zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) on flexible indium tin oxide (ITO) coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates (i.e., ITO/PET). The ZnO NRs were grown by an electrochemical deposition using a sputtered ZnO seed layer and the Ag was deposited by using a thermal evaporator. For comparison, the same fabrication process was carried out on the bare ITO/PET without ZnO NRAs. Due to the discrete surface of ZnO NRs, the deposited Ag was formed as nano-scale particles, while the Ag became film-like for bare ITO/PET. In order to control the size and amount of Ag particles, the Ag deposition time was changed from 100 to 600 s. When the deposition time was increased, the Ag particles became larger and denser, and the absorptance was increased. This enhanced absorptance may be due to the localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag particles. Furthermore, the relatively high hydrophobicity was observed for the deposited Ag on the ZnO NRs/ITO/PET. These improved optical and surface properties are expected to be useful for flexible photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.
Since the presence of the chemical impurities and defect at surfaces and interfaces greatly influence the properties of various semiconductor devices, an unambiguous chemical characterization of the metal and semiconductor surfaces become more important in the view of the miniaturization of the devices toward nano scale. Among the various conventional surface characterization tools, Electron-induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy (EAES), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Secondary Electron Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) are being used for the identification of the surface chemical impurities. Recently, a novel surface characterizaion technique, Positron-annihilation induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy (PAES) is introduced to provide a unique method for the analysis of the elemental composition of the top-most atomic layer. In PAES, monoenergetic positron of a few eV are implanted to the surface under study and these positrons become thermalized near the surface. A fraction of the thermalized positron trapped at the surface state annihilate with the neighboring core-level electrons, creating core-hole excitations, which initiate the Auger process with the emission of Auger electrons almost simultaneously with the emission of annihilating gamma-rays. The energy of electrons is generally determined by employing ExB energy selector, which shows a poor resolution of $6{\sim}10eV$. In this paper, time-of-flight system is employed to measure the electrons energy with an enhanced energy resolution. The experimental result is compared with simulation results in the case of both linear (with retarding tube) and reflected TOF systems.
Under the era of energy crisis, hydrogen energy is considered as one of the most potential alternative energies. Liquid hydrogen has much higher energy density per unit volume than gas hydrogen and is counted as the excellent energy storage method. In this study, Navier-Stokes equations based on 2-phase model were solved by using a computational fluid dynamics program and the liquefaction process of gaseous hydrogen passing through a cryogenic cooling tube was analyzed. The copper with high thermal conductivity was assumed as the material for cryogenic cooling tube. For different inlet velocities of 5 m/s, 10 m/s and 20 m/s for hydrogen gas, the distributions of fluid temperature, axial and radial velocities, and volume fractions of gas and liquid hydrogens were compared. These research results are expected to be used as basic data for the future design and fabrication of cryogenic cooling tube to transform the hydrogen gas into liquid hydrogen.

To produce plastic parts that have fine pattern through conventional injection molding, a lot of difficulties follow. Therefore, rapid heating and cooling methods are good candidates for manufacturing injection-molded parts with micro/nano patterns. In this study, we adopted the E-Mold patent technology. The mold for E-Mold technology has a separate heated core with micro heaters. It is very important to optimize the lay-out of the heaters in heated core because it influences both control and distribution of mold temperature. We developed a optimization method of heating line lay-out by using commercial softwares and compared the output with the experimental results. We used Pro-Engineer Wildfire 2.0 for the mold design, ICEMCFD for mesh generation, and FLUENT for heat transfer simulation. The simulation results showed the temperature profile from $60^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ or $180^{\circ}C$ during heating and cooling process which were compared with the injection molding experiments. We concluded that the simulation could well explain the experimental results. It was shown that the E-Mold optimization design for heater lay-out could be available through the simulation.

In this paper, we report that selective etching on N-polar face by EC (electro-chemical)-etching effect on the reduction of bowing and strain of FS (free-standing)-GaN substrates. We applied the EC-etching to concave and convex type of FS-GaN substrates. After the EC-etching for FS-GaN, nano porous structure was formed on N-polar face of concave and convex type of FS-GaN. Consequently, the bowing in the convex type of FS-GaN substrate was decreased but the bowing in the concave type of FS-GaN substrate was increased. Furthermore, the FWHM (full width at half maximum) of (1 0 2) reflection for the convex type of FS-GaN was significantly decreased from 601 to 259 arcsec. In the case, we confirmed that the EC-etching method was very effective to reduce the bowing in the convex type of FS-GaN and the compressive stress in N-polar face of convex type of FS-GaN was fully released by Raman measurement.

Thermal evaporated 10 nm-Ni/l nm-Ir/(or polycrystalline)p-Si(100) and 10 nm-$Ni_{50}Co_{50}$/(or polycrystalline)p-Si(100) films were thermally annealed using rapid thermal annealing fur 40 sec at $300{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$. The annealed bilayer structure developed into Ni(Ir or Co)Si and resulting changes in sheet resistance, microstructure, phase and composition were investigated using a four-point probe, a scanning electron microscopy, a field ion beam, an X-ray diffractometer and an Auger electron spectroscope. The final thickness of Ir- and Co-inserted nickel silicides on single crystal silicon was approximately 20$\sim$40 nm and maintained its sheet resistance below 20 $\Omega$/sq. after the silicidation annealing at $1000^{\circ}C$. The ones on polysilicon had thickness of 20$\sim$55 nm and remained low resistance up to $850^{\circ}C$. A possible reason fur the improved thermal stability of the silicides formed on single crystal silicon substrate is the role of Ir and Co in preventing $NiSi_2$ transformation. Ir and Co also improved thermal stability of silicides formed on polysilicon substrate, but this enhancement was lessened due to the formation of high resistant phases and also a result of silicon mixing during high temperature diffusion. Ir-inserted nickel silicides showed surface roughness below 3 nm, which is appropriate for nano process. In conclusion, the proposed Ir- and Co- inserted nickel silicides may be superior over the conventional nickel monosilicides due to improved thermal stability.
The microcapsules containing triphenyl phosphate (TPP), a flame retardant, were prepared by phase-inversion emulsification technique using the epoxy resin (Novolac type) with excellent physical properties and network structure. This microencapsulation process was adopted for the protection of TPP evaporation and wetting of polymer composite during the polymer blend processing. The TPP, epoxy resin and mixed surfactants were emulsified to oil in water (O/W) by the phase inversion technology and then conducted on the crosslinking of epoxy resin by in-situ polymerization. The capsule size and size distribution of TPP capsules was controlled by mixed surfactant ratio, concentration and TPP contents, The formation and thermal property of TPP capsules were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology and size of TPP capsules were also investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. As the surfactant concentration increased, the TPP capsules were more spherical and mono-dispersed at the same weight ratio of mixed surfactants (F127: SDBS).

An increase in the surface area of drugs by reducing particle sizes from microns to nanometers has been known as an efficient method to improve the bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs. To prevent drug nanoparticles from aggregation during the processes of drug formulation, a limited number of pharmaceutical inactive ingredients such as hydroxypropyl cellulose has been employed as stabilizers or dispersants. In this study, copolymers of hydrophilic and hydrophobic amino acids were synthesized by the ring opening polymerization of their N-carboxyanhydride monomers and evaluated as novel candidates to stabilize the nanoparticles of a water insoluble drug, naproxen. Naproxen nanoparticles stabilized by synthesized amino acid copolymers were successfully prepared in the size of $200\~500nm$ in 60 min by a wet comminution process. Particle size analysis showed that the effective stabilization performance of copolymers required the hydrophobic moiety content to be higher than $10 mol\%$. However, the molecular weight and morphology of copolymers was not the critical parameters in determining the particle size reduction. Their particle size was found to be stable up to 14 days without significant aggregation.
Silkworm fed on the mulberry leaf mixed with silver nanoparticle to produce silver-nanoparticle embedded cocoon. Comparative analysis of silver content of cocoon shell, percentage of pupation and percentage of cocoon-shell weight showed that the optimum concentration and the feeding period of mulberry leaf mixed with silver nanoparticle were 500 ppm and the period from 3 day 5 instar to mounting of silkworm. The silver content of cocoon was observed variously by silkworm breedings. C212 variety makes pale yellow cocoon with the highest silver content(69%). Using the scanning electron microscope, we showed that the size of silver nanoparticles in silk was observed from 26.98 to 99.81nm. Silver-nanoparticle embedded silk is expected to use as high valuable application owing to the different functional properties including antibiotic characteristics and mechanical and electronic properties. The applicable fields expected is antistatic and/or electronic products with biological degradable natural materials.
