  • Some nano hair systems in the nature are found to show excellent adhesive characteristic, which is called dry adhesive, and synthetic nano hairs to mimic these adhesiveness are believed to have many applications. To develop a practical synthetic dry adhesive system, we mold nano hairs on plastic substrates using thermoplstic materials including COC, PP, PC and PMMA. and estimate the moldability and the adhesive characteristic. As a template for molding nano hairs, AAO membrane is first adopted, which is 60um thick and 13mm in diameter. This membrane has about a billion of through-holes of which diameter is around 200nm. This AAO membrane and the pellet of materials are stacked in the mold and pressed to mold after heating up to be melted. The AAO membrane is removed using KOH to obtain the molded nano hairs. As a result, the diameter of the molded hairs is around 200nm and the length is $2um{\sim}60um$ depending on the molding conditions and materials. The molded nano hair substrates is estimated to show much better adhesive characteristic than a substrate without nano hairs.

  • Polypropylene substrate with hair-like nano features(aspect $ratio{\sim}10$) on the surface is fabricated by injection molding process. Pure aluminum plate is anodized to have nano pore array on the surface and used as a stamper for molding nano features, The size and the thickness of the stamper is $30mm{\times}30mm$ and 1mm. The fabricated pore is about 120nm in diameter and 1.5 um deep. For molding of a substrate with nano-hair type of surface features, the stamper is heated up over $150^{\circ}C$ before the filling stage and cooled down below $70^{\circ}C$ after filling to release the molded part. For heating the stamper, stamper itself is used as a heating element by applying electrical power directly to each end of the stamper. The stamper becomes cooled down without circulation of coolant such as water or oil. With this new stamper heating method, nano hairs with aspect ratio of about 10 was successfully injection molded. We also found the heating & cooling process of the stamper is good for releasing of molded nano-hairs.

  • High-aspect-ratio nano-hair or nano-pillar arrays have great potential in a variety of applications. In this study, we present a simple and cost-effective replication method of high-aspect-ratio polymer nano-hair arrays. Highly ordered nano-porous AAO (anodic aluminum oxide) template was utilized as a reusable nano-mold insert. The AAO nano-mold insert fabricated by the two-step anodization process in this study had close- packed straight nano-pores, which enabled us to replicate densely arranged nano-hairs. The diameter, depth and pore spacing of the nano-pores in the fabricated AAO nano-mold insert were about 200nm, $1{\mu}m$ and 450nm, respectively. For the replication of polymer nano-hair arrays, a UV nano embossing process was applied as a mass production method. The UV nano embossing machine was developed by our group for the purpose of replicating nano-structures by means of non-transparent nano-mold inserts. Densely arranged high-aspect-ratio nano-hair arrays have been successfully manufactured by means of the UV nano embossing process with the AAO nano-mold insert under the optimum processing condition.

  • In nature, some creatures have the ability to walk vertically or upside down on various natural surfaces. One of them, Tokay Gecko has billions of nano-hair at the epidermis of its digital. These nano hairs makes atomistic attractive force to the surface, therefore, it could walk and run on the vertical or upside surfaces. Recently, many researchers tried to fabricate the dry adhesive structure mimicking the nano-hair structure. in this study, I tried to survey these studies to discuss the direction of future fabrication works of dry adhesive structures.

  • Recent publications reported the self-propelled jumping of coalescing dew droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces [1-2]. We further investigated the initial growth, coalescence, and removal by self-propelled ejection of nano and microscopic water droplets on the superhydrophobic surface of lotus leaves under condensing conditions. By using a high-speed digital camera mounted on an optical microscope, we have found: (1) sub-micrometer droplets form and grow on nanoscale waxy hairs; (2) growing droplets coalesce rapidly upon contact, but never jump off the surface unless the diameter of merged droplets exceeds ${\sim}15{\mu}m$; (3) the diameter and direction of jumping droplets are very narrowly distributed, centered at $20-30{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}20$ degrees from the surface normal, respectively. We present a rationale for these observations on the basis of: (a) the hierarchically rough surface structure on nano- and micro-scales; (b) its chemical composition; and (c) the balance among competing forces of cohesion (surface tension), adhesion and gravity.

  • We present simple methods for fabricating high aspect-ratio polymer nanostructures on a solid substrate by rigiflex lithography with tailored capillarity and adhesive force. In the first method, a thin, thermoplastic polymer film was prepared by spin coating on a substrate and the temperature was raised above the polymer's glass transition temperature ($T_g$) while in conformal contact with a poly(urethane acrylate) (PUA) mold having nano-cavities. Consequently, capillarity forces the polymer film to rise into the void space of the mold, resulting in nanostructures with an aspect ratio of ${\sim}4$. In the second method, very high aspect-ratio (>20) nanohairs were fabricated by elongating the pre-formed nanostructures upon removal of the mold with the aid of tailored capillarity and adhesive force at the mold/polymer interface. Finally, these two methods were further used to fabricate micro/nano hierarchical structures by sequential application of the molding process for mimicking nature's functional surfaces such as a lotus leaf and gecko foot hairs.

  • Stained and discolored hair will be damaged by the shampooing, daily UV disposal, and the use of hair dryer. Thus many studies about the effect of various natural substances on the re-secure the skin and scalp are recently reported. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of green tea (Camelloia sinensis) seed oil on colored (dyed) and decolored (bleached) hair. The beneficial effects of green tea seed oil are already well known, but little research has been done about the hair treatment and fade-resistant effect. Dyed and bleached hair was pretreated with green tea seed oil to determine the tensile strength and elongation of the hair, to analyze the hair surface using SEM, and to compare the color fade using spectrocolormeter. The results showed that the tensile strength increased with green tea seed oil pretreatment samples for virgin, dyed, and bleached hairs. Elongation showed the reverse results showing the presence of hair treatment effect. The results of the surface pre-treatment in all groups analyzed by SEM, the hair cuticle became sharper, so coating effect were identified with all samples. The value of the $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ decreased with washed hairs damaged by UV irradiation and the values were decreased also in dyed and bleached hair. In summary, green tea seed oil prevent reinjury to the heat and UV rays for colored and decolored hairs. Cosmetic practice effects of the oil were identified in the field to be appropriate to the customer's skin and scalp that natural cosmetic oils would like to offer.

  • Surface engineering of polymers has a broad array of scientific and technological applications that range from tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, microfluidics and novel lab on chip devices to building mechanical memories, stretchable electronics, and devising tunable surface adhesion for robotics. Recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology have provided robust techniques for controlled surface modification of polymers and creation of structural features on the polymeric surface at submicron scale. We have recently demonstrated techniques for controlled surfaces of soft and relatively hard polymers using ion beam irradiation and plasma treatment, which allows the fabrication of nanoscale surface features such as wrinkles, ripples, holes, and hairs with respect to its polymers. In this talk, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of formation of these structural features. This includes the change in the chemical composition of the surface layer of the polymers due to ion beam irradiation or plasma treatment and the instability and mechanics of the skin-substrate system. Using ion beam or plasma irradiation on polymers, we introduce a simple method for fabrication of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and nested hierarchical structural patterns on polymeric surfaces on various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution and correlation of accommodative lag with refractive error. Method: We had tested the clinical refraction and the accommodative lag in clinically normal 49 young adults (total 98 eyes) aged 18 to 25 years without abnormal binocular function. Monocular and binocular accommodative lag were tested with 0.50 D cross-cylinder lens and near vision test chart which had cross-hairs after full correction of LogMAR visual acuity over 0.05. Results: There was no statistical differences in monocular accommodative lag between right ($0.64{\pm}0.64$ D) and left eye ($0.63{\pm}0.64$)(p=0.858). The accommodative lag of male was higher than female and the range of the value was broader than female in binocular accommodative lag (p=0.015). The wider the inter-pupillary distance was, the higher the accommodative lag was (p=0.003). However, there were no differences with age (p=0.800) and dominant eye (p=0.402). The ranges of accommodative lag of low, middle, and high myopia were 0.75 ~ -0.25 D, 1.25 ~ -0.50 D, and 1.50 ~ -0.75 D, respectively, and the regression was 'y = -0.03953x+0.09205'. Conclusions: These data suggest that clinically normal young adults with high amounts of refractive error have more variable accommodative lag and increased spherical equivalent refraction.
