  • The seaweed Porphyra pseudolinearis as a dominant species grows at upper of the intertidal zone of the East Sea from October to March. Vegetative cells have not matured during October when observed with naked eye and microscope. In the middle of November, although it didn't distingush between female and male gametophytes by eye, it showed antheridium and carpogonium when observed vertical section under microscope. From early December, It could be distinguished female and male gametophytes clearly. From Feburary it showed shorted length of thalli by release of spermatangia and carposporangia as maturation. At early March, the colar has been decaeded and side of thalli has been melted, completed of release of spermatia. At the end of December, the average length and width of female thalli were 149.9$\pm$5.6mm and 22.2$\pm$2.3mm, respectively. The length and width of male thalli were 149.9$\pm$9.4mm and 20.7$\pm$1.8mm. At the end of January, the average length and width of female thalli were 94.6$\pm$6.4mm and 29.1mm$\pm$5.1, respcetively. The length and width of male thalli were 107.8$\pm$7.3mm and 25.9$\pm$0.9mm. From this period lengths of female and male thalli have already been shortned by the release of spermatia and carpogonia.

  • When the oil is produced in the low temperature environment, wax can be accumulated in petroleum production system(pipeline, riser) and causes problems such as pipeline stucking, disturbance of the oil production. These problems can be lead to time-consuming and economic losses for flow assurance. For prediction and mitigation of wax deposition, it is necessary to measure the Wax Appearance Temperature(WAT) which is a temperature when the wax crystals start to be formed. WAT standard measurement method of transparent oil has to determine the cloud point of sample to the naked eye and cannot be applied to continuous change of the temperature. In this study, wax behavior of transparent oil samples are recorded depending on temperature using Visualized WAT Measurement System. Also, WATs of transparent oil samples are measured by image processing and compared with the result of the standard method.

  • In Pleuronectiformes, blind-side malpigmentation (hypermelanosis) is common in cultured flatfishes, and is economically important. To understand the mechanism of blind-side hypermelanosis in flatfishes, we examined when the malpigmentation initially occurred, and studied how the symptoms proceeded during early development of the starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus. To assess quantitative pattern changes of blind-side skin, we observed morphological development of the whole body from 22 (total length [TL] $10.0{\pm}0.2$ mm and body weight [BW] $8.8{\pm}0.57$ mg) to 110 days (TL $23.4{\pm}0.7$ mm, BW $193.6{\pm}23.3$ mg) after hatching (DAH), and also examined the malpigmented area rate of blind-side skin and the malpigmented fish ratios. The experimental animals were reared in fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks in water at a temperature of $18.9{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$ and salinity of $32.6{\pm}0.6$ psu and were fed with rotifer and Artemia nauplii from 22 to 48 DAH, and with A. nauplii and commercial feed from 49 to 110 DAH. As results, the first staining patch seen by the naked eye was observed around the area between the anus and pelvic fin or caudal edge of the trunk at 80 DAH (TL $20.6{\pm}0.5$ mm, BW $112.5{\pm}8.8$ mg). The pigmented area and the pigmented fish ratios were significantly increased from 80 to 110 DAH. These results indicated that malpigmentation on the blind side of starry flounder was initially observed at about 2 cm in length and 100 mg in weight, and the pigmented domain on the blind-side skin was continually broadened by the differentiation of pigmented cells (melanophores and xanthophores) with growth.

  • Intelligent systems(i.e., artificial intelligence), particularly deep learning, are machines able to mimic the cognitive functions of humans to perform tasks of problem-solving and learning. This field deals with computational models that can think and act intelligently, like the human brain, and construct algorithms that can learn from data to make predictions. Artificial intelligence is becoming important in radiology due to its ability to detect abnormalities in radiographic images that are unnoticed by the naked human eye. These systems have reduced radiologists' workload by rapidly recording and presenting data, and thereby monitoring the treatment response with a reduced risk of cognitive bias. Intelligent systems have an important role to play and could be used by dentists as an adjunct to other imaging modalities in making appropriate diagnoses and treatment plans. In the field of maxillofacial radiology, these systems have shown promise for the interpretation of complex images, accurate localization of landmarks, characterization of bone architecture, estimation of oral cancer risk, and the assessment of metastatic lymph nodes, periapical pathologies, and maxillary sinus pathologies. This review discusses the clinical applications and scope of intelligent systems such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning programs in maxillofacial imaging.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of microcurrent stimulation intensity($50{\mu}A,\;100{\mu}A,\;300{\mu}A$ - 5 pps pulse frequency was same) on wound healing in rat. Sixty male Korean rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 for 4 different treatment protocols(none-control group, $50{\mu}A,\;100{\mu}A,\;300{\mu}A$ experimental groups). Experimental 20 mm linear wound were made and all animals in the experimental groups were received microcurrent stimulation once a day for 20 minutes until sacrifice days(1st day, 3rd day, 6th day). A vernier caliper was used to measure a wound healing length and an optical microscope was used to determine any histological changes. The repeated measures two-way ANOVA was used for statistical differences in wound healing length. Experimental results were as follows: 1. In the examination with the naked eye, all groups showed similar changes until 1st day. But from 3rd day, a little intercellular fluid soaked through wound region in control group. In experimental groups, little intercellular fluid soaked through wound region, and swelling and redness did not appear. 2. Wound length of experimental $50{\mu}A$ group was significantly decreased than control group(p<0.001). And in the aspect of application period, wound length was significantly decreased in 3th, 6th day than 1st day and 6th day than 3th day (p<0.001). In conclusion, it has been found that the microcurrent stimulation had a positive effect on wound healing. And $50{\mu}A$ stimulation intensity was more effective than other intensities($100{\mu}A,\;300{\mu}A$) in wound healing. Also, low-intensity microcurrent stimulation was more effective on the purpose of wound healing.

  • In this study, the regeneration investigation for waste reverse osmosis membrane filters which were discarded after use for the household water purifiers has been carried out. Sodium hydroxide, sodium bisulfate, and ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid(EDTA). as the chemical cleaning agents were used. And they were in-situ cleaned with the micro-bubble generator as well. The best result was obtained when both 0.1% EDTA and micro-bubbles were used for 30 min cleaning. Thus, when the performance of the brand new RO membrane and restorated RO membrane were compared, the flux, 19.9%, the recovery ratio 45% were enhanced while the salt rejection was reduced for NaCl 100 mg/L solution, in other words, it has been recovered to the original brand new RO membrane filter. Also the removal of pollutants on membrane surface was confirmed in a naked eye through the scanning electron microscopy. Finally, this research has provided the possibility of the re-use of the waste RO membrane filters of household water purifier which were reclaimed or incinerated after use.

  • A field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of visible biopores (larger than 0.2 mm in diameter) on the saturated hydraulic conductivity of Bonryang sandy loam (Coarse loamy over sandy, mixed, mesic family of Typic Udifluvents) developed on alluvial plains. The saturated hydraulic conductivity was significantly correlated with the equivalent permeble surface area (EPSA) which was calculated from the number of various sized biopores in the soil observed by naked eye, and negatively correlated with the bulk density. The effect of biopores on the saturated hydraulic conductivity was remarkable in subsoil al though it was not pronounced in plowed layer and sandy substrata. The bulk density was found to be correlated with the number and the EPSA of the visible biopores. A remarkable spatial variability was observed in the number of biopore and the bulk density.

  • The possibility of biomaterials prepared from natural polymer as a skin substitute was evaluated by measuring biocompatibility. Biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of chitosan for the purpose of useful biomaterials. These films were inserted in the back of rat and their biodegradability was investigated by the film weight and hematology as a function of time for the biotransformation. The result of rat test showed that medium, high viscosity chitosan induced some suspects of inbiocompatibililty in the tissue by foreign body reaction 48 and 72 hours after implantation. Also, we prepared the official burn ointment which is made by low viscosity chitosan. This burn ointment was covered on the skin wound of artificial burn and their effect of healing was investigated by the evaluation of the naked eye and hematological change as a function of time. The result of rats test showed that burn ointments made from chitosan was effective reduction of inflammation than negative group.

  • The impact response and damage of CLAS panel was investigated experimentally. The facesheet material used was RO4003 woven-glass hydrocarbon/ceramic and the core material was Nomex honeycomb with a cell size of 3.2mm and a density of 96 kg/㎥. The shield plane used was RO4003 and 2024-T3 aluminum. Static indentation and impact test was conducted to characterize the type and extent of the damage observed in two CLAS panels, and the performance of antenna used in a wireless LAN system. Correlation of peak contact force, residual indentation and the delamination area shows impact damage of the panel with an aluminum shield plane is larger than that of the panel with RO4003 shield plane, although the former is more penetration resistant. The damage was observed by naked eye, ultrasonic inspection and cross sectioning. The shape and size of delamination was estimated by ultrasonic inspection, and the area of delamination linearly increases as impact energy increases. The performance of impact damaged antenna was estimated by measuring return loss and radiation pattern. It was revealed that the performance of antenna was related to the impact damage and there was a threshold that the performance of antenna fell as impact energy level changed. The threshold was between the impact energies of 1.5J and 1.75J.

  • Atopic dermatitis induced NC/Nga mice were used to investigate the efficacy of BDH(Baedokhwan) on the recovery of dermatitic symptoms through its influence on the immune related factors and histological changes. First of all, BDH treated group showed improvement of atopic dermatitis with naked eye observation, and significant decrease of clinical index(CI) was observed after 14 weeks. And Infiltration of leukocytes was suppressed in BDH treated group, and the thickness of hypertrophied epidermis and dermis were decreased. In dorsal skin, BDH treated group showed significant decrease of the ratio of CD3+, CD11b+/Gr-1+ immune cells by 52.8%, 25.2, respectively. And also significant decrease the level of IL-5 mRNA and IL-13 mRNA by 44.4%, 28.0, respectively. In PBMC and serum, BDH treated group showed an decrease of CD4+/CD45+, B220+/CD23+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/CD25+ immune cells by 35.0%, 12.6%, 42.7%, 31.6% and 55.6%, respectively, and the level of histamine was decreased by 39.0%. The results above indicated that BDH clinically used for atopic dermatitis treatment has objective validity, and therefore can be provided as the basic data for anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory studies.
