The purpose of this study is to analyze the potential soil loss and hazard zone by the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE) for preservation and management of land resources which is the base of ecosystem, and to grasp the relationship between RUSLE factors in the Nakdong River Basin. All thematic maps used in RUSLE are constructed through GIS and spatial analysis method derived from digital topographic maps, detailed soil maps, land-cover maps, and mean annual precipitation of 30 years collected respectively from National Geographic Information Institute, National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, and Ministry of Environment. The slope length of LS-factor that takes much times by the study area's wideness was calculated automatically through AML(Arc Macro Language) program developed by Van Remortel et al.(2001, 2003). The results are as follows; First, according to the soil loss estimation by the RUSLE, it shows that approximately 82% of the study area have relatively lower possibility of soil loss which is the 1 ton/ha in annual soil loss. While, 9.4% ($2,228km^2$) needed intensive and continuous management for soil loss. Because the amount of their annual soil loss was greater than 10 ton/ha that is optimum level suggested by Morgan(1995). For these areas, the author believe that a new approach which can minimize environmental impacts from soil loss through improvement of cultivation process and buffer forest zone should be applied. Second, according to the relationship between the RUSLE factors, topographical(LS-factor) and cover management(C-factor) conditions have a lot of influence on soil loss in case of the Nakdong River Basin. However, because of RUSLE factor's influence that affect to soil loss might be different based on the variety of spatial hierarchy and extent, it is necessary to analyze and evaluate factor's relationship in terms of spatial hierarchy and extent through field observations and further studies.

The goal of this research is to evaluate landscape-ecological characteristics of watersheds in the Nakdong River Basin by using Geogaphic Information System (GIS) and landscape indices for integation of spatio-temporal informations and multivariate statistical techniques for quantitative analysis of forest landscape. Fragmentation index and change matrix techniques using factor analysis and grid overlay method were used to efficiently analyze and manage huge amount of information for ecological-environmental assessment (land-cover and forest landscape patterns). According to the results based on the pattern analysis of land-cover changes using the change detection matrix between 1980s and 1990s, addition on 750km$^2$ became urbanized areas. The altered 442.04km$^2$ was agricultural areas which is relatively easy for shifting of land-use, and 205.1km$^2$ of forests became urbanized areas, and average elevation and slope of the whole altered areas were 75m and 4$^{\circ}$. On the other hand, 120km$^2$ of urban areas were changed into other areas (i.e., agricultural areas and green space), and fortunately, certain amount of naturalness had been recovered. But still those agricultural areas and fallow areas, which were previously urban areas, had high potential of re-development for urbanization due to their local conditions. According to the structural analysis of forest landscape using the landscape indices, the forest fragmentation of watersheds along the main stream of the Nakdong River was more severe than my other watersheds. Furthermore, the Nakdong-sangju and Nakdong-miryang watersheds had unstable forest structures as well as least amount of forest quantity. Thus, these areas need significant amount of forest through a new forest management policy considering local environmental conditions.
The genetic algorithm is investigated fer parameters estimation of SED (storage - effective drainage) model from the Wi-stream watershed in Nakdong river basin. In the practical application of model, as a number of watershed parameters do not measure directly, it is desirable to make a good estimation from the known rainfall and runoff data. For the estimation of parameters of the SED model using the genetic algorithm, parameters of Green-Ampt equation(SM, K$\_$s/) for the estimation of an effective rainfall and initial storage(y$\_$in/) used in SED model are obtained a regression equation with 5, 10, 20 days antecedent precipitation. And as a consequence of computation, the parameters were obtained to satisfy the proposed objective function. From the comparison of observed and computed hydrographs, it shows a good agreement in the shape and the rising limb, peak, falling limb of hydrograph, so the SED model using the genetic algorithm shows a suitable model for runoff analysis in river basin.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the HSPEXP expert system for the calibration of the Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran (HSPF) for the study watershed. HSPEXP offers advice to the modeler, suggesting parameter changes that might result in better representation of a river basin and provides explanations supporting the recommended parameter changes. The study watershed, Sancheong, is located within the Nakdong River Basin and having the size of $1,072.4km^2$. Input data for the HSPF model were obtained from the landuse map, digital elevation map, meteorological data and others. Water flow data from 2006 to 2008 were used for calibration and from 2009 to 2010 were for validation. Using the HSPEXP expert system, hydrological parameters were adjusted based on total volume, then low flows, storm flows, and finally seasonal flows. For the calibration and validation period, all the HSPEXP model performance criteria were satisfied.

A vulnerability index was developed for drought by using trend analysis and Delphi method. Twelve indicators were selected based on three groups, i.e., hydrological, meteorological, and humanistic groups. Data were collected from Nakdong river watershed. Three trend tests, i.e., Mann-Kendall, Hotelling-Pabst, and Sen's trend tests, were performed for standardizing the indicators and Delphi method was used to estimate the weights for individual indicators. The drought vulnerability index was calculated for seven regions in the Nakdong watershed and Hapcheon turned out to be the most vulnerable region among the study regions. The drought vulnerability index developed in this study can be applied to other regions in Korea for establishing national water resources management plan.
River bed change due to various factors in watershed and/or river environment would one of the most important issues in river management. To judge whether the river bed was aggrading or degrading, normally we use the change in thalweg or average bed, calculated using the design flood of the river. The present study is to figure out the problems of the existing methods and to propose a new concept of average river bed using annual maximum flood. To evaluate the new method, it was applied to the Nakdong River. We use the river bed data surveyed in 1983, 1993, and 2005. The results showed that there were no significant river bed change during 1983 and 1993, while the river bed was degraded significantly during 1993 and 2005. In the latter period, the river had severe degradations, 2~3 m in average sense and 5 m for the maximum in the middle reach(120~200 km from river mouth), and 1~2 m in average in the upper reach(200~240 km from river mouth). For the upstream reach of the confluence of the Naesung River(about 240 km from river mouth), most of the river bed change seemed to be only local phenomena. The main cause of the river bed change in the Nakdong River seems to be massive gravel mining in the middle reach of the river.

It was confirmed that the fish diversity decreased with increasing index of weir's density (IWD) in the four river systems. The IWD showed difference with watershed, it was high in the Nakdong River (NDR). Both two river systems of Gum River (GUR) and Yeongsan River (YSR) were similar, whereas relatively lower density observed in the Han River (HNR) system. A result of 2-Dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov (2-DKS) as a nonparametic test showed different threshold values affecting fish diversity with the river systems. The p-values based on Dmax, were significantly different at 0.05 level (except for YSR). The threshold values affecting fish diversity were also different with watershed. The values were 1.6/km of the HNR, 1.3/km of the NDR, and 2.3/km of the GUR, respectively. The fish diversity was decreased when IWD is over threshold values. The IWD of total 404 rivers (about 33%) among 1,217 surveyed in this study showed above threshold value. These rivers should be considered first for evaluating river continuity. The IWD and threshold value suggested in this study would be useful for selecting a stream priority for river connectivity study.

Drought vulnerability index was developed by selecting drought-related indicators with trend test. Study areas were determined by considering the weir locations from the four major rivers restoration project in Nakdong and Geum river watersheds. Ten indicators were selected and they were categorized into three groups, water resources, precipitation pattern, and social aspects. Annual average surface water level, annual minimum surface water level, annual average groundwater level, and annual minimum groundwater level data sets were collected for water resources aspects. The number of non-rainy days, rainfall concentration ratio, and rainfall deviation were considered for precipitation pattern category. The amount of water available per capita, financial soundness for water resources, and water usage equity were related to social aspects. Mann-Kendall, Hotelling-Pabst, and Sen trend tests were performed for the ten indicator data sets and the results were scored for the drought vulnerability index. The results shows Gumi, Sangjoo, and Hapcheon weirs are relatively vulnerable to drought. The indices were relatively low for the regions in Geum river watershed compared to those in Nakdong river watershed.

The purposes of this study were to suggest the methodology to select prior areas in the environmental pollution survey for livestock excreta (EPSLE) as well as to elucidate the validity of the methodology. In this study, the prior areas in the EPSLE were determined by examining the number of compost facilities categorized according to the three levels of size including the basin, the sub-basin and the watershed, respectively, based on the data from "Annual Nation-wide Pollution Sources Survey (2012)". The results suggested that the list of prior basins were Nakdong, Geum, Youngsan and Han river basins in order. Also, it was examined that the prior sub-basins in the four river basins including Nakdong, Geum, Youngsan and Han rivers were Naesung Stream, Geumgang Gongju, Juam Dam and Namhan Downstream, respectively. The prior watersheds in the sub-basins of Naesung stream, Geumgang Gongju, Juam Dam and Namhan Downstream were Seocheon Downstream, Geum Stream, Gyeombaek Suwipyo and Yanghwa Stream, respectively. The validity of the methodology used in this study was elucidated by analyzing the correlation of the number of compost facilities with the concentrations of T-N and T-P observed in the end-points of sub-basins. The results of correlation analysis showed that the concentrations of T-N and T-P increased with the number of compost facilities. Specifically, there was the stronger correlation between the number of compost facilities and the concentrations of T-N than that for T-P. Consequently, it was proved that the methodology used in this work was valid and rational for the selection of prior areas in environmental pollution survey for EPSLE.

The TMDL standard flow as applying watershed management regime uses the average low flow of past 10 years. Moreover, the TMDL implementation assessment has been enforced through management of pollutant load satisfied objective water quality. Even though the present allocation and management through averaged low flow are still convenient, they are not enough to solve ultimate goals of watershed management to keep up recovery of water body. To maintain the same water quality concentration, the standard flow is required to consider total discharge in management plan which helps to keep healthy ecosystem. In view of this, it would be possible to approach reasonable assessment by reflecting variably changeable discharge from precipitation-streamflow relation and the TMDL standard establishment considering artificial regulated flow. Therefore, this study attempts to develop the TMDL method using Load Duration Curve (LDC) and Streamflow-Load Rating Curve (QLRC) considering total discharge and finds drawbacks with solutions as applying on Nakdong river TMDL unit watershed. Finally, this research evaluates possibility of application on pollutant load allocating and implementation assessment in Korea.
