  • Korean acid clays and Japanese acid clay were 1 N KCl solution and then their acidities were determined by measuring pH of the filtrates produced. And on examining the effect of neutral salt solution, such as KCl, NaCl, $BaCl_2,\;Pb(NO_3)_2\;and\;CuSO_4$, on the acidity, it was found that the effect decreased in order mentioned above and this situation proved to be in accord with Lyotrope series, i.e., the order of $K^+>Na^+>Ba^{++}>Pb^{++}>Cu^{++}.$ And after adsorbing cation, $Al_2O_3\;and\;Fe_2O_3$ which dissolved out of acid clay were measured, with the result that the amounts dissolved out were nearly proportional to acidity. This result accords with Kobayashi and Yamamoto's theory that the cause for acidity of clays is due to the fact that HCl which is formed initially by exchange of cation reacts with solid clay, and then chlorides dissolved out bring about hydrolysis, then resulting in the second formation of HCl. On measuring the rate which acid clay adsorbed dye in aqueous solution of basic and acid dyes, it was found that acid dye had no relation to acidity, and though it was not adsorbed by acid clay, the adsorption rate of basic dye was proportional to acidity. After adsorbing basic dye, pH was proportional to both acidity of solid acid and its adsorption rate of dye. Hence, it was concluded that the adsorption of basic dye was in accord with adsorption mechanism of neutral salt. This study led to find the acidic cause of solid acid and its adsorption mechanism of dye in aqueous solution.

  • Understanding flow pattern of water and solute in subsurface is essential for the reduction and prevention of contamination of soil and groundwater and for the investigation and remediation of contaminated site. The objective of this study is to examine the infiltration pattern in a soil developed from the Jurassic granite using (Brilliant Blue FCF $C_{37}H_{34}N_{2}Na_{2}O_{9}S_{3}$), the nonfluorescent and nontoxic food dye. All image processing was conducted using geographic image processing software, ER Mapper, Version 6.2. The dye coverage was determined by counting the stained pixels in the photographs (80${\times}$80cm, 80TEX>${\times}$5cm) for the vertical and horizontal view. A homogeneous matrix flow occurred in the A horizon with weak, medium granular structure and fingering at the interface of finer-textured A horizon and coarser-textured C horizon. Pegmatitic vein originated from the granite and plant root in C horizon induced preferential flow.

  • To understand the characteristics of vanadium leaching from soils formed by the weathering of basalts, paleo soil at Gosan, Jeju Island, Korea, and several present-day soils from neighboring areas were collected. Leaching experiments were carried out by two approaches: 1) batch experiments under various geochemical conditions (redox potential (Eh) and pH) and 2) continuous leaching experiments under conditions similar to those of natural environments. From the batch experiments, leached vanadium concentrations were highest under alkaline (NaOH) conditions, with a maximum value of $2,870{\mu}g/L$, and were meaningful (maximum value, $114{\mu}g/L$) under oxidizing ($H_2O_2$) conditions, whereas concentrations under other conditions (acidic-HCl, $neutral-NaHCO_3$, and $reducing-Na_2S_2O_3$) were negligible. This indicated that the geochemical conditions, in which soil-water reactions occurred to form groundwater with high vanadium concentrations, were under alkaline-oxidizing conditions. From the continuous leaching experiments, the pH and leached vanadium concentrations of the solution were in the ranges of 5.45~5.58 and $6{\sim}9{\mu}g/L$, respectively, under $CO_2$ supersaturation conditions for the first 15 days, whereas values under $O_2$ aeration conditions after the next 15 days increased to 8.48~8.62 and $9.7{\sim}12.2{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Vanadium concentrations from the latter continuous leaching experiments were similar to the average concentration of groundwater in Jeju Island ($11.2{\mu}g/L$). Furthermore leached vanadium concentrations in continuous leaching experiments were highly correlated with pH and Al, Cr, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations. The results of this study showed that 1) alkaline-oxidizing conditions of water-rock (soil) interactions were essential to form vanadium-rich groundwater and 2) volcanic soils can be a potential source of vanadium in Jeju Island groundwater.

  • Froth flotation has been carried out in order to produce roasting-molybdenite concentrate from molybdenite ore in the Shin-yeomi mine. In our study, roasting-molybdenite (Mo 0.43%) from Shin-yeomi mine was recovered by varying the conditions of regrinding time, dosage of collector and alkalinity. Liberation and flotation efficiency more were effective at regrinding time of six minutes than at single grinding. Mo recovery curves increased considerably as dosage of kerosene increased, whereas Mo grade curves decreased gradually. The separation efficiency of molybdenite was effective when the dosage of collector (kerosene) was adjusted to 300 g/t. The molybdenite concentrate was agglomerated in the range of pH 5-7 and its separation efficiency increased to pH 9-10. The concentrate of 49.5% Mo grade ($MoS_2$, 82.6%) with 81.5% recovery from Shin-yeomi molybdenite ores was obtained under conditions of 20% pulp concentration, 300 g/t kerosene 325 g/t frother (AF65), 2.5 kg/t depressant ($Na_2SiO_3$), pH 9-10 and four cleaning times. In the future, a trial run that can separate up to 50% Mo grade from Shin-yeomi molybdenite ores will be performed.

  • Wet chemical analysis (for $MnO_2$, MnO, and $H_2O$(+)) and electron microprobe analysis (for $Fe_2O_3$ and PbO) give $MnO_2$ 74.91, MnO 11.33, $Fe_2O_3$ (total Fe) 4.19, PbO 0.03, $H_2O$ (+) 9.46, sum 99.92%. 'Available oxygen determined by oxalate titration method is allotted to $MnO_2$ from total Mn, and the remaining Mn is calculated as MnO. Traces of Ba, Ca, Mg, K, Cu, Zn, and Al were found. Li and Na were not found. The existence of (OH) is verified from the infrared absorption spectra. The analysis corresponds to the formula $Mn^{4+}{_{4.85}}(Mn^{2+}{_{0.90}}Fe^{3+}{_{0.30}})_{1.20}O_{8.09}(OH)_{5.91}$, on the basis of O=14, 'or ideally $Mn^{4+}{_{5-x}}(Mn^{2+},Fe^{3+})_{1+x}O_{8}(OH)_{6}$ ($x{\approx}0.2$). X-ray single crystal study could not be made because of the distortion of single crystals. But the x-ray powder pattern is satisfactorily indexed by an orthorhombic cell with a 9.324, b 14.05, c $7.956{\AA}$., Z=4. The indexed powder diffraction lines are 9.34(s) (100), 7.09(s) (020), 4.62(m) (200, 121), 4.17(m) (130), 3.547(s) (112), 3.212(vw) (041), 3.101(s) (300), 2.597(w) (013), 2.469(m) (331), 2.214(vw)(420), 2.098(vw) (260), 2.014 (vw) (402), 1.863(w) (500), 1.664(w) (314), 1.554(vw) (600), 1.525(m) (601), 1.405(m) (0.10.0). DTA curve shows the endothermic peaks at $250-370^{\circ}C$ and $955^{\circ}C$. The former is due to the dehydration: and oxidation forming$(Mn,\;Fe)_2O_3$(cubic, a $9.417{\AA}$), and the latter is interpreted as the formation of a hausmannite-type oxide (tetragonal, a 5.76, c $9.51{\AA}$) from $(Mn,\;Fe)_2O_3$. Infrared absorption spectral curve shows Mn-O stretching vibrations at $515cm^{-1}$ and $545cm^{-1}$, O-H bending vibration at $1025cm^{-1}$ and O-H stretching vibration at $3225cm^{-1}$. Opaque. Reflectance 13-15%. Bireflectance distinct in air and strong in oil. Reflection pleochroism changes from whitish to light grey. Between crossed nicols, color changes from yellowish brown with bluish tint to grey in air and yellowish brown to grey through bluish brown in oil. No internal reflections. • To reduce the dose of fertilizers is very important to sustainable production of many horticultural crops, including strawberry. In order to practice the environment friendly agriculture of strawberry cultivation in plastic film house, soil chemical properties of 435 soil samples (232 for loam, 83 for sandy loam, and 120 for silt loam) in Chungnam Province from2008 to 2009 were determined. The average of pH, EC, OM, Av. $P_2O_5$, Ex. $K^+$, Ex. $Ca^{2+}$, Ex. $Mg^{2+}$, and Ex. $Na^+$ was 6.5, 2.28 dS $m^{-1}$, 26 g $kg^{-1}$, 910 mg $kg^{-1}$, 1.09 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, 8.3 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, 2.5 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, and 0.58 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. The content of Av. $P_2O_5$ in sandy loam soil was significantly higher than silt loam soil, whereas other properties showed no difference between soil texture. The kinds of strawberry cultivars showed no difference in soil chemical properties. The frequency distribution within optimum range of soil chemical properties was 30.6%, 35.4%, 37.0%, 5.3%, 8.5%, 8.5%, and 17.9% for pH, EC, OM, Av. $P_2O_5$, Ex. $K^+$, Ex. $Ca^{2+}$, and Ex. $Mg^{2+}$, respectively. Especially, excessive portion of Av. $P_2O_5$, and Ex. $Ca^{2+}$ were high 86.9%, and 86.0%, respectively. EC values of soil samples were significantly positive correlatoin with all chemical properties except soil pH. In principle component analysis of chemical properties in soil samples, the percentage of variance explained by PC 1 was 38.8%, while PC 2 explained 17.8%of the variance, for a cumulative total of 56.6%. These results were able to distinguish between soil textures and strawberry cultivars. Also, these results considered that understanding of soil chemical properties under using principal component analysis be able to improve amounts of fertilizers for sustainable agriculture in plastic film house.

  • Experimental research on the preparation of photocatalyst for the decomposition of brilliant blue FCF ($C_{37}H_{31}O_9N_2S_3Na_2$) was performed. $TiO_2$ and ZnO powders were prepared from titanium (IV) sulfate and zinc acetate at low reaction temperature and atmospheric pressure by hydrothermal precipitation method without calcination. In addition, $TiO_2$ was prepared with cationic surfactant CTAB (Hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide) at the same conditions. The physical properties of prepared $TiO_2$ and ZnO, such as crystallinity, average particle size and absorbance, were investigated by XRD, Zeta-potential meter and DRS. And, the photocatalytic degradation of brilliant blue FCF has been studied in the batch reactor under UV radiation. For the photocatalysts prepared without CTAB, $TiO_2$ has smaller particle size and larger absorbance and photocatalytic reaction rate than ZnO. And $TiO_2$, prepared with CTAB whose concentration is 1/10 of that of precursor, shows 15% higher than that prepared without CTAB in final photocatalytic degradation ratio of brilliant blue FCF.

  • Microbial insecticide formulations were prepared by liquid and semi-solid fermentations using Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki, HL-106 (BTK-HL106), B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis HL-63 (BTI-HL63) and B. sphaericus 1593 (BS-1593) strains. The liquid fermentation medium contained molasses 2%, dextrose 1.5%, peptone 2%, D-xylose 0.025%, CaCl$_2$ 0.1%, K$_2$HPO$_4$ 0.1%, KH$_2$PO$_4$ 0.1%, MgSO$_4$$.$7H$_2$O 0.03%, FeSO$_4$$.$7H$_2$O 0.002%, ZnSO$_4$$.$7H$_2$O 0.02%. The composition of the semi-solid fermentation medium was rice bran 45.2%, zeolite 31%, yeast powder 0.02%, corn powder 5%, dextrose 3%, lime 0.3%, NaCl 0.06%, CaCl$_2$ 0.02%, and H$_2$O 15.42%. Insecticide formulations produced in the liquid fermentation named BTK-HL106, BTI-HL63 and BS-1593 pesticides and those in the semi-solid fermentation were designated as BTK-HL106-1, BTI-HL63-1 and BS-1593-1 pesticides, respectively. The number of spore (endotoxin crystals) was 2.65${\times}$10$\^$9/ spores per $m\ell$ in the BTK-HL106 and 3.5${\times}$10$\^$10/ in the BTK-HL106-1 3.8${\times}$10$\^$9/ spores in the BTI-HL63 and 7.0${\times}$10$\^$10/ in the BTI-HL63-1, and 7.5${\times}$10$\^$9/ in the BS-1593 and 1.4${\times}$10$\^$10/ in the BS-1593-1. The spores in the BS-1593 formulation was produced two times more than the other formulations. The spores in the BTI-HL63-1 were contained twice than those in the BTK-HL106-1, and five times than those in the BS-1593-1. The results indicated that spore (endotoxin crystals) productions in the semi-solid fermentation increased about ten times than those in the liquid fermentations. $LC_{50}$s of the BTI-HL63 and BS-1593 were 4.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$, and those of the BTI-HL63-1 and BS-1593-1 were 1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$. $LC_{50}$ of the BTK-HL106 was 1.5 mg and that of the BTK-HL106-1 was 0.9 mg. The $LC_{50}$s of the formulations in the semi-solid fermentations showed about two to three times higher than those in the liquid fermentations.

  • An alkaline protease producing microorganism was isolated from korean traditional Meju and identified as Scopulariopsis brevicaulis. The optimum culture condition of Scopulariopsis brevicaulis for the production of alkaline protease was as follow: 2% soluble starch, 0.2$, tryptophan, 0.1% (NH$_{4}$) $_{2}$S$_{2}$O$_{8}$ 0.2% NaHPO$_{4}$, pH 7.5, 35$\CIRC $C. The optimum pH and temperature for the enzyme activity of alkaline protease producing Scopulariopsis brevicaulis were pH 9.0 and 50$\circ $C, respectively. The enzyme was relatively stable at pH 6.0~11.0 and at temperature below 40$\circ $C. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by Hg$^{2+}$ whereas Cu$^{2+}$ gave rather activating effects on the enzyme activity. Phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride inhibited the enzyme activity. This result indicates that serine is very important role in this enzyme. Km value for casein was 1.2410$^{4}$ M/L, V$_{max}$ value for casein was 25.99 $\mu $g/min. This enzyme hydrolyzed casein more rapidly than the hemoglobin.
