The atomic-nano scale structures of multi-component aluminosilicate glasses have not been well understood in spite of its implications fur dynamics and generation of magma in the natural system due to lack of suitable spectroscopic and scattering experiments. Here, we report O-17 MAS and isotropic projection of 3QMAS NMR spectra for quaternary Na-Ca silicate glasses $[(CaO)_x(Na_2O)_{1-x}]\;(A1_2O_3)_{0.5}(SiO_2)_6,\;CNAS)$ at 14.1 Tesla where atomic configurations around bridging oxygen (Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al) and non bridging oxygen (Na-O-Si, Ca-O-Si, (Na, Ca)-O-Si) are partially resolved. With increasing Na content, the fraction of Na-O-Si increases while those for bridging oxygens remain constant. The Na/Ca ratio apparently affects the peak widths of bridging oxygen peaks (e.g., Si-O-Si)) and thus the topological entropy as well as chemical shifts of the bridging oxygen peaks, implying that both BOs and NBOs are strongly interacting with network modifying cations The effect of cation field strength on the degree of Al-avoidance was also discussed.

To explore the action mechanism of Ijintang in the brain, the authors investigated the effects of Ijintang fractions on MgNaK ATPase and MgCa ATPase in rat brain synaptosomes prepared from cerebral cortex. The activities of MgNaK ATPase and MgCa ATPase were assayed by the level of inorganic phosphate liberated from the hydrolysis of ATP. Fraction WH-95-7 at the concentration of $10^{-2}%$ decreased the activity of MgNaK ATPase about 34.1% and also reduced the activity of MgCa ATPase about 49.3% But, other fractions (WB-95-7, WC-95-7, MB-95-7, MC-95-7, MH-95-7) did not significantly changed the activities of the MgNaK ATPase and MgCa ATPase The decreased activity of MgNaK ATPase by WH-95-7 will decrease the rate of $Ca^{2+}$ efflux, probably via an Na-Ca exchange mechanism and will increase the rate of $Ca^{2+}$ entry by the depolarization of nerve terminals. The reduced activity of MgCa ATPase by WH-95-7 will result in the decreased efflux of $Ca^{2+}$. As a conclusion, it can be speculated that lithium elevates the intrasynaptosomal $Ca^{2+}$ concentration via inhibition of the activities of MgNaK ATPase and MgCa ATPase. and this increased $[Ca^{2+}]i$ will cause the release of neurotransmitters.
This study was intended to investigate the relationship of dietary Na and Ca intake and excretion in blood pressure regulation of free-living adults. Two separate surveys were conducted for 294 subjects in Taegu area, The results of this study are as follows ; When subjects were divided into normotensive and hypertensive, there were significant differences in age, BMI between two groups, When dietary intake were compared between two groups, no significant differences in energy, carbohydrates, fat and protein intakes were shown. While Na intake of hypertensive groups was not signidicantly different from that of normotensive groups, While Na intake of hypertensive groups was not significantly different from that of normotensive groups, ca intake of hypertensive group was significantly lower than that of normotensive group(P<0.005), Urinary Na excretion was significantly higher(P<0.05) in hyperten sive group. However, urinary Ca and K excretion in both groups were not significantly different. Urinary sodium was significantly correlated with urinary Ca and Na intake. Multiple regression analysis of variables showed that urinary sodiumwas affected by Na index, age and Ca Index. While urinary Ca, was significantly correlated with urinary Na and K excretion, it did not show significant correlation with Ca intake
Physiological activity of osteoblast including bone formation is known to be closely related to the increase of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ activity($[Ca^{2+}]_i$) in osteoblast. $Ca^{2+}$ is an important intracellular messenger in diverse cellular functions, and regulation of its level is mediated by the transmembrane $Ca^{2+}$ movement via $Ca^{2+}$ channels, $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange, and by intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ movement through the intracellular stores. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ is regulated in osteoblast-like cells(OLCs) by measuring $Ca^{2+}$ activity with cell imaging technique. OLCs were isolated from femur and tibia of neonatal rats, and cultured for 7 days. Cultured OLCs were loaded with a $Ca^{2+}$-sensitive fluorescent dye, Fura-2, and fluorescence images were monitored with a cooled CCD camera. The images were processed and analyzed with an image analyzing software. The results were as follows. (1) $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ of OLC decreased as the $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the superfusing Tyrode solution was lowered. When $Na^+$ concentration in the superfusing solution was decreased, $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ increased.. These suggest that $Ca^{2+}$ flux occurs via the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange mechanism. (2) When $Na^+$ in the superfusing solution was removed. a transient $Ca^{2+}$, increase($Ca^{2+}$ spike) was occasionally observed. However, $Ca^{2+}$ spike was not observed after adding 1 ${\mu}M$ thapsigargin. This implies that the generation of $Ca^{2+}$ spike is mediated by the release of $Ca^{2+}$ from endoplasmic reticulum(ER). (3) As the $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the superfusing solution was raised, the frequency of 0mM $Na^+$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ spike increased, suggesting that $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release(CICR) mechanism exists. (4) After $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ was decreased with the superfusion of $Ca^{2+}$-free solution containing thapsigargin, the recovery of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ with reperfusion of 2.5mM $Ca^{2+}$ solution transiently exceeded the control level, suggesting that the depletion of $Ca^{2+}$ in ER induces $Ca^{2+}$ influx from extracellular medium via store-operated $Ca^{2+}$ influx(SOCI) mechanism. (5) $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ was not affected by the superfusion of 25mM $K^+$ Tyrode solution. These results suggest that intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ activity in osteoblast is regulated by transmembrane $Ca^{2+}$ flux via $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange, $Ca^{2+}$ release from the internal store (ER) via $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release, and store-operated $Ca^{2+}$ influx across the cell membrane.
The samples of Bi2Sr2Ca1-xNaxCu2O8+y with various carrier concentration were synthesized by substituting Na for Ca ion. The superconducting properties hall coefficients and X-ray powder diffraction were measur-ed the sampled. Single phase samples were obtained for 0$\leq$x<0.3 of Bi2Sr2Ca1-xNaxCu2O8+y In the single phase the critical temperature. {{{{ { T}_{c } }} and carrier concentration increase with the increase of Na concentration pass through a maximum and then decreases. In the range of x$\geq$0.7 to the Na doped samples however we observed the metal-semiconductor transition. The c-axis seemed to decrease and a and b-axes increase with increasing Na concentration in the single phase. Decreasing of c-axis while increasing x is due to the smaller size of {{{{ {Na}^{+1 } }} ions to the {{{{ { Ca}^{+2 } }} ions. In the range of x>0.3 however the trend becomes ambiguous due to the inclusion of the 10K phase and impurity phase.
Al-pillared montmorillonite was synthesized from Na-saturated montmorillonite which was prepared by ionic substitution from Ca-montmorillonite of the Jabut mine, Gyeongiu City d(001), surface areas, and dehydration and ionic substitution properties have been compared for both Ca-montmorillonite and Al-pillared montmorillonite. d(001) spacings of Ca-montmorillonite and Al-pillared montmorillonite were 15.1 $\AA$ and $18.3\AA$, respectively. Dehydration took place before $350 ^{\circ}C$ in Ca-montmorillonite, whereas linealy up to $550^{\circ}C$ in Al-pillared montmorillonite. BET surface areas are 5~6 times larger in Al-pillared montmorillonite ($192 \m^2$/g) than Camontmorillonite. Ca-montmorilonite shows high selectivity for $Na^{+}$ /, whereas Al-pillared montmorillonite for $Ca^{2+}$ . The former shows decreasing d(001) spacing with increasing substitution of $Na^{+}$ and irregular interstratified structure at high substitution of $Ca^{2+}$ /, whereas the latter shows linear decreasing pattern in d(001) spacing with increasing $Ca^{ 2+}$.
Magnetism at the interfaces of rocksalt structured half-metals, NaN and CaN were investigated by use of the first-principles band calculations. The electronic structures for the simple interface and mixed interface systems were calculated by the FLAPW (full-potential linearized augmented plane wave) method. From the calculated number of electrons in muffin-tin spheres of each atom, we found, for the simple interface system, that the magnetic moment of the N atom in the CaN (NaN) side is increased (decreased) compared to those of inner N atoms. For the mixed interface system, the magnetic moments of the interface N atoms are similar to the averaged value for the inner N atoms in CaN and NaN side. Among four interface N atoms, the N atom connected to Na atoms in the upper and down layers has the largest magnetic moment and that connected to Ca atoms has the smallest. The number of p electrons in each N atom and the calculated density of states explain well the above situation.
Na-Ca exchange transports calcium ion either into (reverse mode Na-Ca exchange) or out of the cell (forward mode Na-Ca exchange) according to the direction of driving force produced by the changes in ratio of intra- and extra-cellular Na concentrations. Thus, Na-Ca exchange is regarded as the regulator of myocardial contraction. However, the existence of reverse mode Na-Ca exchange and its role in myocardial contraction is still questioned. Present study was performed to identify the presence of reverse mode Na-Ca exchange and its possible involvement in the regulation of myocardial contraction in rat heart. Using the left atria of rat, contraction was induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS, 0.5 msec duration and supramaximal voltage). Changing of the stimulation frequencies from resting 4 Hz to 0.4, 1 or 8 Hz caused typical negative staircase effect in twitch tension, but $^{45}Ca$ uptake showed bimodal increase. When the stimulation frequency was abruptly changed from 4 Hz to 0.4 Hz the atrial twitch tension showed three phased-enhancement, that is, the initial rapid increase (the first phase) followed by rapid decrease (the second phase) and stabilization (the third phase). $^{45}Ca$ uptake was equivalent to tension, i.e. initial significant increase in first 30 second and then decrease. Benzamil treatment abolished the first phase of increase in a dose dependent manner from $10^{-5}\;to\;3{\times}10^{-4}M.$ Bay k 8644 $(3{\times}10^{-5}M)$ treatment enhanced the inotropy induced by frequency reduction and abolished the second and third phase decreases. Benzamil treatment also suppressed the contraction stimulated by Bay K 8644. Although the contraction at 4 Hz stimulation was completely abolished by verapamil $3{\times}10^{-5}\;M$ pretreatment, the contraction reappeared as soon as the stimulation frequency was changed into 0.4 or 1 Hz and interstingly,$^{45}Ca$ uptake were significantly higher than no treatment. From these results, it is concluded that reduction of stimulation frequency causes calcium influx by the reverse mode Na-Ca exchange, resulting in initial rapid increase of twitch tension. then it turns into forward mode exchange to efflux the calcium, resulting in decrease of the twitch tension in left atria of rat.
Suppressive role of $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange in myocardial tension generation was examined in the negative frequency-force relationship (FFR) of electric field stimulated left atria (LA) from postnatal developing rat heart and in the whole-cell clamped adult rat ventricular myocytes with high concentration of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ buffer (14 mM EGTA). LA twitch amplitudes, which were suppressed by cyclopiazonic acid in a postnatal age-dependent manner, elicited frequency-dependent and postnatal age-dependent enhancements after $Na^+-reduced,\;Ca^{2+}-depleted$ (26 Na-0 Ca) buffer application. These enhancements were blocked by caffeine pretreatment with postnatal age-dependent intensities. In the isolated rat ventricular myocytes, stimulation with the voltage protocol roughly mimicked action potential generated a large inward current which was partially blocked by nifedipine or $Na^+$ current inhibition. 0 Ca application suppressed the inward current by $39{\pm}4%$ while the current was further suppressed after 0 Na-0 Ca application by $53{\pm}3%.$ Caffeine increased this inward current by $44{\pm}3%$ in spite of 14 mM EGTA. Finally, the $Na^+$ current-dependent fraction of the inward current was increased in a stimulation frequency-dependent manner. From these results, it is concluded that the $Ca^{2+}$ exit-mode (forward-mode) $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange suppresses the LA tension by extruding $Ca^{2+}$ out of the cell right after its release from sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in a frequency-dependent manner during contraction, resulting in the negative frequency-force relationship in the rat LA.

Purpose. Urinary calcium excretion using a 24-hr urine colledtion has been used for the diagnosis of hypercalciuria up to now. But It takes a lot of time and costs much. We have investigated on a more simple method for screening of hypercalciuria in children. Methods: We had retrospectively analyzed sodium, potassium, calcium and creatinine in spot urine of eighty-four patients with urinary symptoms from May 1998 to July 1998 in Korea university Guro hospital and compared the urinary Ca/Cr ratio with the Nin ratio. Using a urinary Nan ratio >2.68 as a cutoff value in predicting the occurrence of hypercalciuria, we measured its sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and the negative predictive value. Results: A direct relationship was found between urinary Na/K and Ca/Cr ratio (r=0.496, P<0.001, Ca/Cr : Na/K x 0.0167+0.061). Using a urinary Na/K ratio >2.68 as a cutoff value in predicting the occurrence of hypercalciuria, its sensitivity was found to be $100\%$ and its specificity $54.5\%$. The positive predictive value was $37.5\%$ and the negative predictive value $100\%$. Conclusions : Spot urine Na/K ratio is a valuable test for the screening of hypercalciuria in children.
