This study was undertaken to determine whether Juglandis Semen (JAS) extract exerts protective effect against oxidant-induced inhibition of $Na^+-pump$ activity in cerebral cortex. $Na^+-pump$ activity was estimated by measuring ouabain-sensitive oxygen consumption. The oxygen consumption significantly inhibited by 1mM t-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP), which was prevented by addition of 2% JAS extract. The oxygen consumption was increased by an increase in $Na^+$ concentration from 5 to 100 mM, $K^+$ concentration from 0.5 to 10 mM, and $Mg^{2+}$ concentration from 0.2 to 5 mM. These changes in ion concentrations did not affect the inhibitory effect of tBHP and protective action of JAS on oxygen consumption. tBHP (l mM) produced a significant increase in lipid peroxidation in cerebral cortex, which was prevented by 2% JAS extraction. These results suggest that JAS exerts protective effect against tBHP-induced inhibition of $Na^+-pump$ activity in the cerebral cortex, probably through action as antioxidant.
BACKGROUND: White stain symptom caused by Acremonium acutatum and Trichothecium roseum, is one of the most important diseases on the grape. This disease occurs national-wide in Korea and causes irreversible damage on grape, at harvest season. This study was conducted to develop environment-friendly control method against white stain symptom. METHODS AND RESULTS: Environment-friendly materials were tested for control activity against A. acutatum and T. roseum in vitro and in vivo. The effect of environment-friendly materials against white stain symptom on grape in farmer's greenhouse was examined. The materials, NaDCC and sulphur, were sprayed three times on the leaves and fruit of grape at the two sites of farmer's field, Anseong and Hwaseong of Gyeounggi. To evaluate control effect of NaDCC and sulphur against white stain symptom, the disease severity was investigated after the two materials were sprayed from the disease onset three times at the 7-day intervals. NaDCC showed efficacy of 59.71% for Kyoho and 72.26% for Campbell-Early, and sulphur showed 78.31% for Koyho and 66.19% for Campbell-Early. CONCLUSION: We were selected sulphur and Sodium-Dichloroisocyannurate(NaDCC) based on the results of experiments in vitro. In field test, sulphur and NaDCC showed suppressive effect in the white stain symptom of grape. These results suggested that NaDCC and sulphur selected can be used as control agents for controlling white stain symptom on grape.
Effects of SITS (4-acetamido-4'-isothiocyano-2, 2'-disulfonic stilbene) on a $Na^+$ transport, tissue oxygen consumption and Na-K-ATPase activity were studied in isolated frog skin preparations. $Na^+$ transport was estimated by measuring the short-circuit current(SC) across the skin; oxygen consumption was measured in separated epidermis as well as in intact skin; and Na-K-ATPase was assayed in $24,000{\times}g$ fraction of epidermal homogenates. The SCC across the skin Was rapidly and substantially reduced in the presence of 10 mM SITS in the medium bathing the outside(mucosal) surface of the skin. When the drug was added to the inside(serosal) bathing medium, there was about 20 min delay for inhibition of SCC and the effect was less pronounced. The above effect of SITS was independent of the presence of $Cl^-$ in the bathing medium. The oxygen consumption of the skin tissue was not affected by SITS, but the Na-K-ATPase activity of a subcellular fraction of the skin was significantly inhibited. These results suggest that SITS retards $Na^+$ transport across the frog skin primarily by interfering $Na^+$ entry across the mucosal membrance of the epithelial cell, although an effect on $Na^+$ pump can not be ruled out completely.

When some kinds of inhibitors, i.e. $1{\times}10{-3}mol/l$ arsenic trioxide, 0.2 mol/l 2-mercaptoethanol, 0.2mol/l thiourea were added to 3% NaCl solution, there were some considererable effects to decrease corrosion current density in natural potential condition and the effect fo solution temperature increasing corrosion rate was smaller than that of no addition to 3% NaCl solution. However the susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement due to over-protection in case of cathodic protection was much greater than that of no addition, especially was the greatest in case of addition of 2-mercaptoethanol. Therefore adding inhibitors for anti-corrosion effect, it is suggested that selection of the optimum protection potential is important from the view point of prevention against hydrogen embrittlement due to over-protection in case of cathodic protection.
A population segregating for the naked neck (Na) gene was used to evaluate its effect on fast growing broilers at heat stress. An experimental stock comparable to those of modern broilers was established by backcrossing to colour synthetic male and female lines. Matings between heterozygous (Na/na) males and females produced normally feathered (na/na), heterozygous (Na/na) and homozygous (Na/Na) chicks for the present study. Day old to seven week old coloured broilers of three genotypes viz. normally feathered (na/na), heterozygous naked neck (Na/na) and homozygous naked neck (Na/Na) were compared for heat dissipation, growth performance, body conformation traits, blood biochemical parameters and carcass traits in tropical climate. In hot climate, naked neck broilers had significantly less body temperature and better heat dissipation capabilities as compared to normal broilers. The naked neck broilers had significantly higher body weight and better feed conversion ratio than na/na broilers. The Na/Na or Na/na broilers exhibited higher giblet yield, blood loss and lower feather mass compared to na/na broilers. The results indicated that the reduction in feather coverage in Na/Na and Na/na broilers facilitates better heat dissipation with lower body temperature, more body weight gain, better FCR and carcass traits compared to normal broilers.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of multi or single application of fluoride plus 0.05% NaF solution on the remineralization of dental caries lesion. The microhardness changes of enamel surface were measured after application of fluoride and precipitation of 0.05% NaF solution on 6 groups of cow's tooth on which the artificial carious lesions were formed first. Test groups were calssified into two step application with NaF, $SnF_2$ and APF under different application time conditions plus 0.05% NaF solution(group I, II, III, IV) and single application with APF plus 0.05% NaF solution (group V) and control(0.05% NaF solution only, group IV). The obtained results were as follows. 1. Regarding microhardness change of enamel surface. microhardness increments in group I(NaF for 1 minute+APF for 3 minutes+0.05% NaF solution for 1 minute), II($SnF_2$ 1 min+APF 3 min+NaF sol.), III($SnF_2$ 2 min+APF 2 min+NaF sol.), IV(NaF 2 min+APF 2 min+NaF sol.) and V(APF 4 min+NaF sol.) were significantly greater than group VI.(P<0.05) 2. Microhardness changes of shorter application time of $SnF_2$ (group II) were significantly greater than group III. (P<0.05) 3. Microhardness changes were variable with kinds of fluoride, application sequence and application time of fluoride. but had no relation with the number of fluoride application.
The electrical resistivity of the ceramic glaze coated on ceramic substrate plays an important role on the characteristics of the thick and thin film electrical circuits. In this study the effects of the various modifiers on the electrical resistivity were examined in SiO2-Al2O3-B2O3-RO-Na2O (RO=CaO , SrO, BaO, PbO) glass system. In alkali free glasses where divalent cations are responsible for electrical conduction the electrical conductivity of th glasses increased with the ionic size of divalent cations due to the decrease in the bond strength between oxyben and divalent cation. In Na2O containing glasses however where Na+ ion is responsible for electrical conduction the ionic conductivity decreased with the ionic size of divalent cations because the blocking effect of the cations on Na+ ion movement increased with larger divalent cations. Na+ ionic conduction also depended on the glass structure relaxation due to the corrdination number changes of B2O3 and Al2O3 which varied with the NaO2 content in the glass.
Vanadium is widely distributed in animal tissues and it is supposed to be a regulator of Na-K-ATPase activity. The effect of sodium orthovanadate on Na-K-ATPase activity in rabbit kidney was measured in vitro and compared with that of ouabain. The influence of sodium orthovanadate on the renal function of rabbits was also investigated. 1) Na-K-ATPase activity was decreased by sodium orthovandate at the concentrations of $10^{-7},\;10^{-6},\;10^{-5}\;and\;10^{-4}\;M$ to 73.89, 36.49, 6.50 and 4.99% of the control activity respectively. 2) Na-K-ATPase activity was decreased by ouabain at the concentrations of $10^{-4},\;10^{-3}\;and\;10^{-2}\;M$ to 69.52, 22.84 and 3.88% of the control activity respectively. 3) Urine volume, urinary excretion of $Na^+,\;K^+\;and\;Cl^-$, clearances of inulin and p-amino-hoppuric acid were decreased until after 60 minutes following the administration of sodium orthovanadate 0.5 mg/kg intravenously $Na^+\;reasorption$ rate was not changed and mean arterial pressure was significantly elevated during 60 minutes after the administration of sodium orthovanadate.

The purpose of this study was to assess the antibacterial effect of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and chlorhexidine (CHX) on Enterococcus faecalis and to evaluate and to compare the time-dependant antimicrobial effect of NaDCC with NaOCl and CHX in the root canal in vitro before and after instrumentation. Extracted Human single teeth were prepared by serial instrumentation technique. The samples were autoclaved and contaminated for 3 days with E. faecalis monocultures. The teeth were then divided into 4 groups Each group was irrigated and inserted with 2% NaOCl, 2% NaDCC, 2% CHX and steri)ized saline. After 6, 12, 24, 72h, and 1 week incubation, sterilized paper point was inserted into the root canal. Paper points containing root canal contents were then placed on the agar plate. And then each root cana) was prepared with #4 and #5 GG (Gates-Glidden) drill. The debris were collected in the sterilized microtube and the plates were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ in an increased $CO_2$ atmosphere. After 24h incubation the growth of bacteria around the paper points were measured. NaOCl and NaDCC solution shows similar antimicrobial effect for E. faecalis at 6, 12, 24, 72h and 1 week. In centrol group, irrigated with sterilized saline, no antimicrobial effect was observed. The results are in agreement with other investigators, who have shown the bactericidal property and possibility of NaDCC as a root canal irrigation solution. Thus it seems that NaDCC solutions can be clinically applied into the root canal within 1 week after dilution.

The non-spectroscopic interference effects that occurred in inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry were studied for Ge, As and Se in human urine and serum. Many biological samples contain Na, K, Cl and organic compounds, which may cause the enhancement and depression on the analyte signal. The effect of 1% concomitant elements such as N, Cl, S, P, C, Na, and K on a 100 ㎍/L germanium, arsenic and selenium signal has been investigated by ICP/MS. The interference effects were not in the same direction. It appeared that concomitant elements such as Cl, S, and C induce an enhancement effect, whereas N and P did not show any significant effect. And, Na and K caused a depression. We have found a link between the abundance of analytes and the ionization potential of concomitant elements (eV), except carbon and nitrogen.
