  • This study was carried out in order to secure basic data of seedling mass propagation technique of Rhododendron mucronulatum which is the native tree species of Korea by surveying the characteristics of its fruit and seed. The fruits were collected at Mt. Goryeo in Ganghwa-gun on different dates in 2013; August 26th, September 5th, September 12th, October 4th. The seed germination test was carried out at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$. Moisture content of the fruit was highest (54.5%) in the fruit collected on September 5th. Number of the seeds in a fruit was 91.3 to 116.3, regardless of the collection date. Seed length was highest ($1947.4{\mu}m$) in the seeds collected on October 4th and seed width was highest ($727.3{\mu}m$) in the seeds collected on September 12th. Germination rate of the seeds was highest at $25^{\circ}C$ regardless of the seed collection date, which showed the highest value(27.3%) in the seeds collected September 12th. Meanwhile, the seeds were not germinated not at all at 5, 10 and $30^{\circ}C$. $T_{50}$ and mean germination time of the seeds got shorter at the higher temperature. Germination uniformity got lower when the collection date got later. Germination speed of the seeds was fastest at $25^{\circ}C$. According to the results of this study, it seems that the appropriate time to collect fruit and seed is between September 12th and October 4th, and the appropriate temperature for the seed germination is $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Antioxidative capacities of Stachys sieboldii MIQ and 6-year-old ginseng powder were assessed after extraction with 80% ethanol, and their addition effects on quality characteristics of cookies were determined. Stachys sieboldii MIQ showed 3.12-fold higher total phenol content (TPC) and higher antioxidative capacities than ginseng based on higher values of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant capacity, and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (P<0.05). The 80% ethanol extract was then fractionated with $H_2O$ (Fr. I), 30% (II), 50% (III), 70% (IV), and 100% ethanol (V). Fractions of Stachys sieboldii MIQ extract showed 2.2-fold (Fr. I)~6.1-fold (III) higher TPC and higher antioxidative capacities than ginseng extract fractions. TPC was in the order of fractions III> II> I> IV> V for Stachys sieboldii MIQ extract while in the order of fractions I~III> IV~V for ginseng extract, assuming that Stachys sieboldii MIQ contained more phenolic compounds with higher polarity than ginseng. Addition of 5% and 10% Stachys sieboldii MIQ and ginseng powder increased spread ratio in cookies compared to 100% wheat flour, and 10% addition of Stachys sieboldii MIQ resulted in the darkest and most reddish cookies. In the sensory evaluation, cookies with 5% and 10% Stachys sieboldii MIQ received higher scores for taste preference and higher overall acceptability than ginseng or control cookies. Therefore, powder of Stachys sieboldii MIQ could impart more favorable sensory characteristics as well as higher antioxidative capacity than ginseng in bakery products.

  • We evaluated the bioavailability of a novel organic Ca supplement chelated with milk protein (CaMP) in growing rats and compared it with those of Ca carbonate and Ca citrate. Four-week-old male rats were divided into six groups (n=6/group) and fed AIN-93G-based experimental diets containing three Ca sources, Ca carbonate, Ca citrate, and CaMP at two levels, normal (0.5%, w/w) and high (1.5%, w/w), for 6 weeks. Growth, mineral contents of serum, Ca content and breaking force of femur, and Ca absorption were measured. There were no significant differences in weight gain or food intake, but food efficiency ratio (FER) of CaMP in the high Ca group was higher than those of other groups. Ca and P concentrations in serum were within normal range in all experimental rats. There was no difference in Ca content of the femur among all of the groups. Although there was no statistical significance in bone breaking force of the femur among the groups, the CaMP groups had a higher breaking force compared to other groups. Further, Ca absorption rate significantly increased in the CaMP groups (p<0.05). These results demonstrate that the CaMP supplement did not exhibit any negative effect on growth or Ca metabolism of the rats. Therefore, CaMP can be recommended as a good Ca supplement with regard to bone metabolism and Ca bioavailability.

  • Eum Yang Kwak, the aerial part of Epimedium koreanum, is widely used as a folk medicine for stimulant in man, tonic, and hypotensive purpose. The plant contains icariin (a specific flavonoid), magnoflorine (an alkaloid) and tannin, but their contents are not known until now. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method for them was developed. Determination of icariin and magnoflorine was successfully achived by high performance liquid chromatography equipped with a UV detector in the ranges of $0.1{\sim}0.4\;mg$ and $0.002{\sim}0.1\;mg\;per\;ml$ sample, respectively. Extraction of the plant was carried out with water or 50% ethanol using different decocting temperatures and times. Icariin was well extracted either by water ($100^{\circ}C$, 3hr) or 50% ethanol ($85^{\circ}C$, 1hr), and its content in the plant was measured to be 0.94%. On the other hand, magnoflorine was fully extracted by 50% ethanol ($85^{\circ}C$, 1hr), and its content was determined to be 0.16%. Therefore, decoction of the medicinal plant with water at $100^{\circ}C$ for 3hr turned out to be recommendable for the best extraction.

  • This study was carried to develop the new functional food material by exploring natural antioxidant substances of Crotalaria sessiflora L. We compared antioxidative activity of potential antioxidant substances extracted from Crotalaria sessiflora L. The order of extract yield of Crotalaria sessiflora L. were stem > loaves > seed > root. Antioxidative activities of Crotalaria sessiflora L. were measured by total polyphenol contents EDA (electron donating activity), SOD (superoxide dismutase) -like activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging ability and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging ability. Total polyphenol acid content was much higher in leaves Ex than other extracts. And leaves Ex showed the most excellent antioxidative activity ($86.27\%$) in terms of SOD-like activity. The EDA was ordered loaves Ex > stem Ex > seed Ex > root Ex. Hydroxy radical scavenging ability was the most effective in loaves Ex, and hydorogen Peroxide radical scavenging ability was the highest in seed Ex. Therefore we could be certain that leaves Ex was the most effective in antioxidative activity from Crotalaria sessiflora L.

  • For the production of pumpkin paste with respect to heating conditions, we steamed the pumpkin for roughly 15 min, heated it with high pressure treatment for 0 min (A), 10 min (B), 20 min (C), 40 min (D), and subsequently investigated the quality characteristics. Generally a significant difference was observed between the pumpkin paste treated with and without high-pressure heat. The values of water content, crude protein and crude fiber of the high-pressure heat-treated groups B, C, D were decreased compared with untreated group A. The soluble fiber in experimental group B sweet-pumpkin paste treated with high-pressure heat for 20 min was higher than the control, and the highest value at 2.02. Experimental group D sweet-pumpkin paste treated with high-pressure heat for 40 min was found to have a decreased soluble fiber content relative to the control. The L value for the color of the group A untreated control sweet-pumpkin paste (no high-pressure heating) decreased as the time increased from 10 min to 40 min, with L values of 50.33, 49.46, and 48.06, respectively. The b value for the color of the sweet-pumpkin paste also decreased, showing a significant difference. Taking into account all the results, we chose experimental group B in order to prepare sweet-pumpkin latte. We used 0.2% gum (xanthan gum, locust bean gum, guar gum) as a stabilizer. Sweet-pumpkin latte with xanthan and locust bean gum has a suspension stability effect that lasts 90 min. The L and b values of sweet-pumpkin latte with gums increase and a value decrease compared with the control. In terms of the overall acceptance of the sweet-pumpkin latte, the experimental group with xanthan gum scored the best.

  • The purpose of this study is to maximize diagnositc usefulness with increasing signal to noise ratio(SNR) and contrast to noise ratio(CNR) by using a 1mmol/mL gadolinium contrast agent. From January 2012 to June 2013 fourty-seven patients were underwent the MRI scanning to investigate the contrast difference in gadolinium content. Twenty of the patients were injencted the commercial contrast agent containing 0.5mmol/mL gadolinium and the rest of them were injected the new contrast agent containing 1mmol/mL gadolinium called gadobutrol. We measured and evaluated each SNR and CNR of the hip joint space, iliopsoas muscle and femoral head. As a result, using the 1mmol/mL gadolinium contrast agent had the higher SNR results than using the 0.5mmol/mL agent(27% in the hip joint, 30.01% in the femoral head). Also CNR using the 1mmol/mL gadolinium agent was proved to be higher than that of using 0.5mmol/mL agent(28.31% in the ilopsoas muscle and 26.74% in the femoral head). Therefore, the contrast agent containing more gadolinium like 1mmol/mL used in this study is more effective to shorten T1 relaxation time, so it increases the signal intensity and CNR and furthermore maximizes diagnostic value. This study reports the usefulness of the 1mmol/mL contrast agent in the contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance hip arthrography for the first. Therefore, it can be considered to have an meaningful academic value as showing the method for increasing the diagnostic usefulness by using the 1mmol/mL contrast agent.

  • Based upon the sedimentological, geochemical and micropaleontological analyses of two sediment cores from the Antarctic Peninsula (AP), three distinct lithological units can be recognized: (1) ice-proximal an/or ice-distal diamictons in the lower part of the cores, accumulated just seaward of the grounding line of the ice shlef until 11,000 yrs BP; (2) diatomaceous mud between 6,000 and 2,500 yrs BP in the middle part, resulted from a large influx of organic materials by enhanced production of open marine condition; (3) diatomaceous sandy mud since 2,500 yrs BP, characterized by an increase in sand content and decrease in TOC and diatom abundance in the lower layers, which reflects the formation of more extensive and seasonally persistent sea ice. Based on the C-14 radiocarbon dating, the sub-ice shlef deposition of the diamicton on the AP western shelf completed around 11,000 yrs BP. Colder condition was reinstated between 12,800 and 11,600 BP with a dropin TOC content and diatom abundance, which is coincident with the Younger Dryas event in the North Atlanticregion. At this time, the ice shelf, that is now absent in the study area, appears to advance as evidenced by an abrupt increase in sea-ice taxa. A climatic optimum is recognized between 9,000 and 2,500 BP, coincide witha mid-Holocene climatic optimum 'Hypsithermal Warm Period' from the other Antarctic sites. During this time, diatomaceous mud accumulated by a large influx of organic materials by enhanced production occurred in openmarine condition. Around 2,500 BP, diatomaceous sandy mud reflects the formation of more extensive and seasonally persistent sea ice, coincident with the onset of the Neoglacial in the Antarctic. Our results provide evidence of climatic change from the Antarctic Peninsula`s western shelf that helps in determining the existence and timing of Holocene milennial-scale climatic events in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • One of the abundant biomass for bioenergy production is thought to be agricultural by-products produced annually. The purpose of this study were to provide basic information about the changes of the moisture contents and chemical compositions for storage periods and bale types of rice straw, and it was attempted for the first time. The bale types of rice straw which were harvest in October 2011, were the square bale, the round bale, and the wrapped round bale type with plastic, respectively. Each of bale were stored in house, outdoor, and rain sheltering facilities condition for 1 year. The moisture contents and chemical compositions for each bale type are investigated for the 3-storage stages (0, 6, 12 month). While the moisture contents of the square and round bales stored in house condition were ranged from 20~25%, the square bale stored under the rain shelter facilities was showed the lowest moisture content less than 20% during the storage periods. For the chemical compositions, the cellulose and hemicellulose contents of rice straw bale stored in outdoor condition were decreased with the storage periods. However, in house condition, the chemical compositions of the square and round bales were slightly increased at the middle and the end of storage stages (6 and 12 months) compared with the initial storage stage (0 month). In conclusion, while optimum and favorable storage conditions of agricultural by-products is a house storage of the bale with plastic, if the bale can stored at outdoor, water penetration prevention such as the rain shelter facilities is required.
