  • In order to examine the quality attributes of native-bee honey, proximate composition and mineral components were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry, ion chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. The analytical results showed that native-bee honey is higher in the contents of crude ash, crude protein and diastase activity than those of foreign-bee honey. The principal mineral components of honey were Ca, Mg, Na, K and Cl, which showed that almost all the mineral components were contained higher in the native-bee honey than the foreign-bee honey samples. When we calculated K/Na ratio, we could make a clear distinction between native-bee honey and foreign-bee honey. The K/Na ratio turned out to be more than 10 in 6 samples of native-bee honey, whereas the ratio of foreign-bee honey showed up less than 1.5 in all 3 samples.

  • Purpose. Urinary calcium excretion using a 24-hr urine colledtion has been used for the diagnosis of hypercalciuria up to now. But It takes a lot of time and costs much. We have investigated on a more simple method for screening of hypercalciuria in children. Methods: We had retrospectively analyzed sodium, potassium, calcium and creatinine in spot urine of eighty-four patients with urinary symptoms from May 1998 to July 1998 in Korea university Guro hospital and compared the urinary Ca/Cr ratio with the Nin ratio. Using a urinary Nan ratio >2.68 as a cutoff value in predicting the occurrence of hypercalciuria, we measured its sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and the negative predictive value. Results: A direct relationship was found between urinary Na/K and Ca/Cr ratio (r=0.496, P<0.001, Ca/Cr : Na/K x 0.0167+0.061). Using a urinary Na/K ratio >2.68 as a cutoff value in predicting the occurrence of hypercalciuria, its sensitivity was found to be $100\%$ and its specificity $54.5\%$. The positive predictive value was $37.5\%$ and the negative predictive value $100\%$. Conclusions : Spot urine Na/K ratio is a valuable test for the screening of hypercalciuria in children.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of NaOH fusion treatment on Na-P1 zeolite synthesis from fly ash and to evaluate its optimal condition. NaOH fusion treatment of fly ash led to Na-P1 zeolite with shorter reaction time and higher quality compared that of simple hydrothermal method. Mixed zeolite phases of Na-P1 and hydroxy sodalite were formed by the fusion treatment below $450^{\circ}C$, whereas only Na-P1 zeolite was formed above $550^{\circ}C$. Ratio of NaOH/fly ash, reaction times, fusion temperature and solid/liquid ratio strongly affected the kind and crystallinity of the zeolite formed. The CEC of Na-P1 zeolite formed at the optimum reaction conditions of NaOH/fly ash ratio 0.9 and solid/liquid ratio $1/5.0{\sim}1/7.5$ after NaOH fusion treatment at $550^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours was about $398cmol^+kg^{-1}$ which was 40% higher than those of control products. Therefore, it is clear that NaOH fusion treatment of fly ash in open system could lead to Na-P1 zeolite with high purity.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the changes of photosynthetic ability and cation content in barley cultivar seedlings cultured for 10 and 30 days with different NaCl concentrations containing 1/4 Hoagland solutions. At the highest NaCl concentration, the weight of dry matter and the shoot/root ratio (S/R ratio) were decreased. Thus, shoots were affected more than roots by NaCl treatment. The S/R ratio decreased more in 'Neulssalbori' than in 'Bunong' by the NaCl treatment. The. internal $Na^+$ concentration increased greatly with the highest NaCl concentration, but $K^+$ concentration in plants decreased with the highest NaCl treatment. The $Ca^{2+}$ concentration had a small change with NaCl concentrations. Thus $Na^+$/$K^+$and $Na^+$/$Ca^{2+}$ratios increased with the highest concentration. The chlorophyll content (%/dry weight) of seedlings decreased at higher NaCl levels except for Bunong in 30 day old seedlings. The photosynthetic ability decreased only for Neulssalbori in the 10 days NaCl treatment. The stomatal conductance, and transpiration had decreased in the 10 day old seedlings, but not with 30 day old seedlings.

  • To compare the characteristics between native and foreign bee honeys, we analyzed several parameters of honeys by measuring pollen species, mineral content and K/Na ratio. Our results showed that native bee honey is higher in the pollen species, mineral concentrations than foreign bee honey. The K/Na ratio of native bee honey were increased 3.9~27.9 times than foreign bee honey. We could not detect Fe, Zn, and Al in all native bee honeys by the inductively coupled plasma method. The present results suggest that the several parameters such as pollen species, mineral content and K/Na ratio, were applicable for the identification of differences between native bee honey and foreign bee honey.

  • Na and Ca effects on contracture were studied in order to estimate Na/Ca exchange ratio in the isolated atrial muscle of the rabbit. All experiments were performed in tris-buffered Tyrode solution which was being aerated with 100% $O_2\;and\;kept\;at\;37^{circ}C$. To load intracellular $Na^+,\;10{-6}M$ ouabain or K-free solution were used. Contractures were induced by brier exposure of atrial muscle to Tyrode solution containing various concentrations of Ca or of Na. The results obtained were as follows: 1 ) Increasing the extracellular Ca concentration, the amplitude of contracture also increased and was maximum at 8 mM Ca-Tyrode solution. 2) The relationship between extracellular Ca concentrations and relative amplitude of the contractures showed hyperbolic pattern. By using Hill plot, the line has the slope of 1 12 which means the number of Ca binding sites of the carrier in the cell membrane. 3) The amplitude of the contracture was maximum in 0 mM Na-Tyrode solution and decreased in dose dependent manner when the Na concentration increased. 4) When the relationship between extracellular Na concentrations and the amplitude of contractures was expressed as dose-response curve, the curve showed sigmoid pattern. The line with the slope of 2.82 was obtained by using Hill plot. 5) From above all the results, it is suggested that exchange ratio of Na and Ca via Na/ca exchange system in the atrial muscle of rabbit could be 3:1 approximately.

  • Action of anthraquinone on the sodium plus potassium activated ATPase activity in the rabbit red cell membrane has been investigated and the experiments were also designed to determine the mechanism of action of anthraquinone on the ATPase activity. The following results were obtained 1. The activity of the NaK ATPase from red cell membrane is inhibited by anthraquinone and the concentration of anthraquinone for maximal inhibition is about 5mM. 2. The ratio of inhibition of NaK ATPase by anthraquinone, with a giving concentration of sodium in the medium, is increased by raising the potassium concentration. 3. The ratio of inhibition of NaK ATPase by anthraquinone, with a given concentration of potassium in the medium, is increased by raising the sodium concentration. 4. The action of anthraquinone on the NaK ATPase activity is inhibited by calcium ions and the ratio of inhibition is increased by small amounts of calcium but almost constant by larger amounts. 5. The inhibitory action of anthraquinone on the NaK ATPase activity was not related to the amino group of lysine, the hydroxyl group of threonine or the imidazole group of histidine. 6. The inhibitory action of anthraquinone on the ATPase activity is due to sulfhydryl group or the carboxyl group of the enzyme of NaK ATPase.

  • Pb-free ferroelectric $(Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5})TiO_3$ (NBT) thin films were prepared by a modified sol-gel process. Their structural, dielectric and pyroelectric properties were investigated as a function of the excess Na/Bi ratio and the annealing temperature. In the case of thin films containing no excess Na and Bi, only partial amounts of the perovskite NBT were crystallized, where the films consisted mainly of the pyrochlore phase of $Bi_2Ti_2O_7$ for annealing conditions of $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. With increasing excess Na/Bi ratio, the proportion of the perovskite phase effectively increased due to the compensation of the volatile Na and Bi components. For a Na/Bi ratio of 2.0, the thin film with single NBT perovskite phase was obtained within XRD detection limit after annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and it showed the excellent dielectric properties, ${\varepsilon}r$ of ~550 and tan ${\delta}$ of 0.03. While these properties were degraded for Na/Bi ratio of 2.5 despite the existence of pure perovskite phase. The NBT thin film with Na/Bi ratio of 2.0 are also promising candidates for applications requiring pyroelectric devices because it was found to have pyroelectric coefficients of $1.3{\sim}7nC/cm^2K$ in the temperature range of $30{\sim}100^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was performed to examine the effect of initial composition ratio and various reaction conditions on CEC and crystallinity of the product in hydrothermal synthesis of zeolitic materials from fly ash. Na-P1 zeolite was formed from the mixture with $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio above 2.55, however from the mixture with $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio below 2.25 hydroxy sodalite was formed. The CEC of reaction product(Na-P1 zeolite) treated with 3N-NaOH, $Na_2O/Al_2O_3$ ratio 2.55 and $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio 2.0 for 12 hours at $103^{\circ}C$ was about $285cmol^+kg^{-1}$, which was higher than those of the products of other reaction condition. The crystallinity of Na-P1 zeolite as high as 45.1% was attained at the optimum reaction condition of 2N-NaOH, $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio 2.55, $Na_2O/Al_2O_3$ ratio 1.5 for 12 hours at $103^{\circ}C$. The XRD peak of the reaction product could be measured at 7.16, 5.04, 4.12, 3.18, $2.69{\AA}$ and tetragonal pillar shape observed by SEM image be characteristic for Na-P1 zeolite. Judging from the result, it should be considered the optimum synthesis condition for Na-P1 zeolite from fly ash was 2~3N NaOH, $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio 2.55 and $Na_2O/Al_2O_3$ ratio 1.5~2.0 for 12 hours at $80{\sim}103^{\circ}C$.
