  • Livestock manure compost (LC) generally contains high content of phosphorus, therefore can be a substitute for phosphorus fertilizers. In this experiment of the cultivation of lettuce in green house, the possibility of LC as a subsitute for phosphorus fertilizer was investigated and the fertilizer efficiency of nitrogen and potassium in LC as compared with chemical N fertilizer (urea) and K fertilizer (potassium chloride) was examined. In proportion to the increase in the application rate of nitrogen fertilizer, soil pH declined, whereas EC and $NO_3$-N content became higher. The application of LC appeared to increase the soil content of organic matter, available phosphate, exchangeable calcium, magnesium and sodium more than that of chemical fertilizer. Supplementation of the K fertilizer by the lack amount from the application of LC resulted in the same exchangeable potassium content in soil with NPK plot in which N, P and K fertilizers were applied by the amount of soil test recommendation. The relationship between soil $NO_3$-N content and nitrogen application rate from fertilizer and compost showed as y=0.57717a+0.19760b+74.65 ($R^2$=0.6347) in which y is the soil $NO_3$-N content (mg $kg^{-1}$), a is nitrogen application rate from fertilizer and b is nitrogen application rate from compost (kg $ha^{-1}$), respectively. From this equation, the supply ability of $NO_3$-N into soil of LC exhibited about 34% (pig manure compost 37.0, chicken manure compost 34.7, cattle manure compost 23.3) of nitrogen fertilizer (urea).

  • Organic fertilization (OF) was an effective management strategy to improve crop yield and soil fertility. Determination of optimum application rate has been received great interest as a major research field. In this study, we evaluated optimum application level of three different organic fertilizers; mixed expeller compost (MEC), mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) and organic complex fertilizer (OCF), for garlic cultivation. Treatments consisted of MEC, MOF, OCF (50, 100, 150% of standard nitrogen input), inorganic fertilizer(NPK, N-P2O5-K2O : 250-78-128 kg ha-1) and no-fertilization (control). Overall, the yields of garlic under MEC, MOF and OCF 100% (5,337, 5,617 and 5,276 kg ha-1) were higher than under control (4,496 kg ha-1). The 100% of three OFs treatements showed the highest yield and bulb diameter, similar with NPK, while leaf length and bulb height were not significantly different among all treatments. The 150% of three OFs rather decreased yield. The highest nitrogen use efficiency (38.4 and 38.0%) was observed in MOF 100% and OCF100%, which was the most similar with that in NPK (38.8%). As OF application rate increased, pH was decreased, but soil NO3-N and NH4-N were increased. There was no significant difference in soil organic matter (OM), av. P2O5 and Ex. cation values. From these results, 100% application of OFs could be recommended as a suitable input level for garlic cultivation, regardless of organic fertilizer types. Further study might be required to evaluate long-term OF application effect on soil health and crop productivity.

  • Long-term fertilizer application have been carried out at experimental farm of the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station from 1967 to 1983 to obtain basic informations about longterm effect of fertilizer regime, especially, compost and chemical fertilizer on the soil chemical properties and the rice growth. 1. Rice yields obtained from the non-fertilized plot and PK applied plot were significantly reduced compared to NPK applied plot by 43% and 53%, respectively, primarily due to decrease of leaf area, crop growth rate, number of panicles and number of spikelets and delayed flowering. 2. No visible phosphorus-symptom and yield loss were obserbed at the plot that phosphorus was not included even though phosphorus content in the soil and rice plant were lowered. 3. The plot that was not received potassium resulted in yield loss by 9% compared to NPK applied plot due to decrease in potassium content in soil and rice plant, and spikelt number. 4. Available phosphorus, silica, and exchangeable potassium in soil significantly increased by adding compost to NPK applied plot and hence, increased grin yield by 6 to 9% compared to applied plot through improvement of nutrient uptake efficiency. 5. Grain yield of compost applied plot lowered by 30% than NPK applied plot due to decreased nutrient uptake efficiency and delayed rice growth while this yield was higher than Non-fertilized plot.

  • soil microbial activities and diversities in a newly reclaimed soil. Soil chemical properties, population of microbe, microbial biomass, and properties of microbial community were investigated under 4 different treatment (animal manure compost+green manure, chemical fertilizer, and without fertilizer). The experiment was conducted for 3 years from 2012 to 2014. The most of chemical properties in the animal manure compost+green manure treatment were increased continually compare to chemical fertilizer and without fertilizer. The population of bacteria and fungi were higher in the animal manure compost+green manure treatment, however, there was no difference on actinomyces. Soil microbial biomass C content was higher in the animal manure compost+green manure treatment than in chemical fertilizer and without fertilizer. Biolog examination showed that catabolic diversities of bacterial communities were higher in the treatment of animal manure compost+green manure. It was showed that principle component analysis of the Biolog data differentiated the organic matter amended soils from NPK and control. These results indicated that application of animal manure compost+green manure had a beneficial effect on soil microbial properties.

  • An attempt was made to provide the most resonable fertilizer recommendation for sesame and peanut crops based on soil analytical data and yield response to the NPK fertilizer application, which were obtained from field experiments conducted during 1970 to 1993. 1. According to the analytical data of sesame and peanut soils obtained in 1985~1993, the contents of organic matter, available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable K, Ca and Mg were increased in sesame soils, but the those components were decreased in peanut soils. 2. The yield index of the plot without N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ fertilizer were 81-84, 84~92 and 81~92, respectively, as the yield of NPK plot was regarded as 100. 3. Linear or quadratic equations derived from the relationship between soil analysis data and fertilizer application rates were proposed for NPK recommendation. The parameters of soil analysis used in the equations for N, P and K were organic matter, available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable K, respectively. 4. Revised fertilizer recommendation based on the soil chemical status enable to save the fertilizer application of sesame and peanut soils. The amounts of saved NPK fertilizers were 5.1kg N/10a(increase in 2.8kg N/10a for peanut), 0.9~2.9kg $P_2O_5/10a$, and 1.7~5.8kg $K_2O$/10a.

  • With increasing the concerns of health improving foods. the demands of C. boreale M., which is a perennial flower and has been historically used for a natural medicine, become higher, recently, However, wild C. boreale M. collected in a mountatinous area is limited and not enough to cover all demands. The cultivation system and fertilization strategy are required to produce much amount of C. boreale M. with a good quality. We investigated the effects of soil amendment application on plant growth and effective components of C. boreale M. to develop efficient cultivation system. C. boreale M. was cultivated in a pot scale, and lime, fly ash, poultry manure compost and swine manure compost as an amendment applied with rate of 2, 20, 150 and $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Here, chemical fertilizers were applied with the same level ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=150-80-80kg\;ha^{-1}$) in all treatments. Flower yields of C. boreale M., edible part as a natural medicine, were increased to 37 and 27% by swine and poultry manure compost application, respectively. Poultry manure compost amending (NPK+PMC) increased 3.6 times of proline content and 58% of total amino acids in the flower part more than chemical fertilization (NPK). But the contents of amino acids did not increase with amending liming materials like lime and fly ash. Cumambrin A, which is a sesquiterpene compound and has the effect of blood-pressure reduction, increased to 34 and 19% by lime and fly ash applications, respectively. Cumambrin A was significantly correlated with calcium content in the flower part of C. boreale M. Conclusively, soil amendments like compost and liming materials might contribute to increase the yields and quality of C. boreale M.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the weed population as affected by repeated application of fertilizers for 15 years (nonfertilized, PK, NK, NPK, NPK+Compost, NPK+Straw and NPK+lime). Alopecurus aequalis authority did not grow at all without P application and lime reduced the population of A. aequalis. Total number of weeds were the largest at 5-10cm soil layer and increased by application of compost and straw. Monochoria vaginalis dominated in NPK+compost and NP plot. Scirpus hotarui dominated in NPK+straw. Both Eleocharis kuroguwai and Potamogeton distinctus dominated in nonfertilized plot. Numbers of M. vaginalis and S. hotarui were larger low pH 6 while that of E. kuroguwai and P. distinctus at pH 6 to pH 7. Incidence of M. vaginalis and S. hotorui was great at pH's lower than 6, while E. kuroguwai and P. distinctus favored pH's ranging from 6 to 7.

  • A long-term experiment was carried out to examine the effects of compost on the long-term trends and synergy effects with chemical fertilizer and saving the chemical fertilizers of paddy cropping. The experiment was conducted for the past 36 years with constant amounts of N, P, K and compost in a paddy field at Milyang, South Korea. Grain yield was significantly increased in the plots with compost application. Twenty five years after the compost treatment, grain yield was significantly increased and it reached almost 90% of NPK plots. The effect of rice straw compost on grain yield was not clear during the early cropping years about 60%, but it slightly increased there after about 95% during the late five years. In compost plots, soil organic matter content, K and $SiO_2$ was greater in the compost applied plots than with application of recommended doses of NPK. However, soil pH was reduced in compost applied plots and Ca, and Mg were remained unchanged when compared to the application of recommended doses NPK. Soil nutrient contents were less in compost applied plots than with the application of recommended doses of NPK along with compost but was found to be increased than that of un-fertilized plots. The present study indicated that the application of rice straw compost with NPK is the best of all and followed by NPK and Compost. However, treatment of Compost is time consuming and hard working desired and eventually non economical practice in mechanized agricultural systems, even though Compost is very useful source of improving the soil fertility and its physical characteristics and also the application of inorganic N and P are essential for sustaining high yield.

  • The objectives of this study were to monitor the changes in soil solution nutrients and to evaluate their effect on rice uptake and yield. The changes of chemical characteristics of paddy soil solution were examined from the 58th fertilization experiment in which the continuous rice cropping experiment started in 1954 at the National Academy of Agricultural Science. The treatments were no fertilization (No fert.), inorganic fertilization (NPK), inorganic fertilizer plus rice straw compost (NPKC) and inorganic fertilizer plus silicate and lime fertilizer as a soil amendment (NPKCLS). The fertilizers were added at rates of standard fertilizer application rate in which nitrogen (N), phosphate ($P_2O_5$), potassium ($K_2O$), and sililcate ($SiO_2$) were applied at rates of $75{\sim}150kg\;ha^{-1}$, $70{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, $75{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, and $7.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ respectively and lime was applied to neutralize soil acidity until 6.5. Average Electrical Conductivity (EC) of soil solution in NPKCLS and NPKC ranged from 1.16 to $2.00dS\;m^{-1}$. The $NH{_4}^+$ and $K^+$ levels in NPKCLS and NPKC were higher than that of the other treatments, due to high supply power of rice straw compost. The content of $H_3SiO{_4}^-$ was higher in NPKCLS because of silicate application. The dominant ions in soil solution were $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ among cations and $HCO{_3}^-$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, and $Cl^-$ among anions in all treatments. The continuous application of inorganic fertilizers plus rice straw compost (NPKC) and silicate fertilizer (NPKCLS) led to the changes of various chemical composition in soil solutions. Also, they had a significant impact on the improvement of rice inorganic uptake and grain yield. Especially, inorganic uptake by rice in NPKC and NPKCLS significantly increased than those in NPK plot; 14~46% for T-N, 32~36% for P, 43~57% for K, and 45~77% for Si. Therefore, the combined application of inorganic fertilizers with organic compost as a soil amendment is considered as the best fertilization practice in the continuous rice cropping for the improvement of crop productivity and soil fertility.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the effect of NPK fertilization on tree seedling growth and chemical properties of soil. Seedlings of Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla were planted in May 1998 in the nursery at Gariwang mountain, Kangwondo, and seven NPK fertilizer plots(4, 12, 28, 60, 124, 252, and $508g/m^2$) and one non-fertilized plot were used to meet the study objectives. Seedlings of Pinus koraiensis and Acer mono were planted in April 1998 in plastic pots of nursery at Chungnam National University, and seven NPK fertilizer plots(0.5, 1.5, 3.5, 7.5, 15.5, 33.5 and 63.5g) and one non-fertilized plot were used to meet the study objectives. To estimate the relative growth ratios of the seedlings, height and root collar diameter of the seedlings were measured after planting and also in October 1998. Soil samples were collected in October 1998 from the nursery of Gariwang mountain and the plastic pot of the nursery of Chungnam National University. The relative growth ratios of height and root collar diameter in Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Acer mono were greater in all fertilized plot than non-fertilized plot, but there was no difference in relative growth ratio of height and root collar diameter of Pinus koraiensis between the fertilized and non-fertilized plots. NPK fertilization increased soil P and K, decreased exchangeable Ca and Mg, and base saturation, and pH. Fertilization resulted in no difference in total soil N between the fertilized and non-fertilized plots of nursery of Gariwang mountain, but increased in total soil N in plastic pots. Fertilization increased the growth of hardwood species and had changed soil chemical properties of this fertilizer trials.
