An Experimental study was conducted on spray combustion using dual swirlers at different outlet angle; co-swirl and counter-swirl. To understand the characteristics of turbulent spray combustion of dual swril flow(DSF), the axial helical annular vaned swirlers with various swirl ratios and combination of angle and direction were designed. and temperature measurements of a rapidly thermocouple insertion and measurements of soot volume fraction and microrstructure using thermophoretic sampling particle diagnostic(TSPD) as TEM were carried out. The NOx, $CO_2$,$O_2$, etc. was analyzed using emission gas analyzer. The results show that flame stability were maintained under very lean condition. for both co-swirl and counter-swirl case. And though Counter-swirl case kept the higher temperature region compared to co-swirl case, Counter-swirl combustion represented less NOx emission and soot formation than co-swirl case.

It has become inevitable to search for alternative fuels due to severe energy crisis these days. Use of alternative fuels, which are typically of lower quality, tends to increase environmental pollution, including formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx). In this paper performance of vacuum residue has been investigated experimentally as well as numerically in typical operating conditions of a furnace. Heat release reaction is modeled as sequential steps of devolatilization, simplified gas phase reaction and char oxidation as that for pulverized coal. Thermal and fuel NOx are predicted by conditional estimation of elementary reaction rates and are compared against measured experimental data. On the overall reasonable agreement is achieved for spatial distributions of major species, temperature and NOx for all test cases.

The effects of hydrogen enrichment to methane on NOx formation have been investigated with swirl stabilized pre-mixed hydrogen enriched methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor(nominally of 5,000 kcal/hr). The hydrogen enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame stability was examined for different amount of hydrogen addition to the methane fuel, different combustion air flow rates and swirl strengths by comparing equivalence ratio at the lean flame limit. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using gas analyzers, and OH chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about species concentration of emission gases and flowfield. The results of NOx and CO emissions were compared with a diffusion flame type combustor. The results show that the lean stability limit depends on the amount of hydrogen addition and the swirl intensity. The lean stability limit is extended by hydrogen addition, and is reduced for higher swirl intensity at lower equivalence ratio. The addition of hydrogen increases the NOx emission, however, this effect can be reduced by increasing either the excess air or swirl intensity. The NOx emission of hydrogen enriched methane premixed flame was lower than the corresponding diffusion flame under the fuel lean condition.

A diesel engine has various merits such as high thermal-efficiency, superior fuel consumption and durability. Therefore the number of diesel engine in the world is increasing. As the seriousness of environmental pollution increases in the world, the method to reduce the noxious materials of $CO_2$, NOx and P.M. is very important subject to correspond to exhaust gas regulations. A new concept, so called premixed charge diesel combustion(PCCI), is focused among the various corresponding manners. In this study, we investigated the mixture formation within the cylinder with injection timing using GTT simulation code and also compared combustion characteristics of PCCI engine with that of commercial diesel engine. From this experiments, it could be found that homogeneous mixture formation was observed according to advance of injection timing and simultaneous reduction of NOx and Soot in injection timing of BTDC 60$^{\circ}$.
Various measures have been tried to reduce the NOx emission from diesel engine, but with partial success because the mechanisms of NOx and PM formations appear to have trade-off relation between each other. Therefore it has been known to be difficult to reduce NOx emission and PM emission simultaneously. Two stage combustion method i,e. a combustion process which has rich combustion stage and lean combustion stage one by one, has been developed successfully to reduce NOx formation in the continuous combustion chambers such as in the boilers. But until yet it is not successful to apply the same method in intermittent combustion chamber like in the diesel engine cylinder, as it was, only several research works were carried out. In this study, devised was a uniquely shaped combustion chamber with reformed piston crown intended to keep fuel-rich condition during early stage of combustion and fuel-lean condition during next stage. It was found that the NOx emission decreased significantly at various conditions of operation with the two stage combustion type engines of PR20 type, but other values such as smoke, CO and specific fuel consumption deteriorated as usual.
The NOx emission characteristics with oxygen enrichment in nonpremixed counterflow and coflow jet flame of $CH_4$ fuel have been investigated numerically. A small amount of nitrogen is included in oxygen-enriched combustion, in order to consider the inevitable $N_2$ contamination by air infiltration. The results show that the initial increase of NO with increasing oxygen enrichment is due to increasing temperature and residence time, while its subsequent decrease above 75% oxygen is due to decreasing the consumption rate of nitrogen. When oxygen addition exceeds 30%, Thermal NO gradually becomes the dominant production pathway and Prompt NO becomes negative pathway for net NO production rate. It is also seen that Thermal NO plays an important role in NO reduction when strain rate increase in oxygen-enriched combustion. Finally, the results of EINOx with oxygen enrichment in coflow jet flame show the similar profile with those of conterflow flame. It is confirmed that, with leakage of 1% nitrogen in the oxidizer stream, the corresponding EINOx is eight times of that emitted from regular $CH_4$/Air flame.
The rapid decrease of fossil fuel resources and increase of environmental pollution caused by aviation industries have become a severe issue which leads to an increase in the greenhouse effect. The use of biofuel becomes an option to alleviate issues related to unrenewable resources. This study presents a computational simulation of the biofuel combustion characteristics of various alternative fuels in an annular combustion chamber designed for training aircraft. The biofuels used in this study are Sorghum Oil Methyl Ester (SOME), Spirulina Platensis Algae (SPA) and Camelina Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (CHEFA). Meanwhile, Jet-A is used as a baseline fuel. The fuel properties and combustion characteristics are being investigated and analysed. The results are presented in terms of temperature and pressure profiles in addition to the formation of NOx and soot generated from the combustion chamber. Results obtained show that CHEFA fuel is the most recommended biofuel among all four tested fuels as it is being found that it burns with 37.6% lower temperature, 15.2% lower pressure, 89.5% lower NOx emission and 8.1% lower soot emission compared with the baseline fuel in same combustion chamber geometry with same initial parameters.
In the present study, the characteristics of combustion phenomena and NOx emission in the OFA-type tangentially injected coal-fired boiler have been investigated numerically in order to find the effect of geometrical variation on the performance of the boiler. For these, numerical analyses of turbulent flow, chemical reaction, and radiation heat transfer are performed by using the computational fluid dynamics method. The predicted results clearly show that NOx formation highly depends on the combustion processes, the temperature and species concentrations. In addition, the optimum conditions for both the maximum NOx reduction and highest boiler efficiency can be obtained by considering the amount of supplied air and the injection angle at OFA, and modifying the boiler configuration. It is also found that the variation of supplied air at OFA is more effective than that of the injection angle for reducing the NOx emission, within the present operating conditions.
The NOx emission characteristics with oxygen enrichment in non-premixed counterflow flames were investigated numerically. To consider systematically the situation of inevitable $N_2$ contamination by air infiltration in the process of pure-oxygen combustion, the volume ratio of $O_2$ in an oxidizer was changed from 21% to 100%. As a result the NO emission index $(EI_{NO})$ has the highest value under condition of 75% oxygen enrichment. This result can be explained by the change of $N_2$ destruction rate with oxygen enrichment rather than flame temperature, flame thickness and residence time. In particular, it was found that the reaction of N+NO=$N_2+O$ has the largest contribution on NOx production in oxygen-enrichment flames.
