A feasibility test was conducted to evaluate the addition of turbidity substance in a coagulation process to remove natural organic matters (NOM), the precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs). The experimental water sources were synthetic water containing 5 mg/L of humic acid and 50 mg/L of NaHCO3 and drinking water resource of Ulsan city (S Dam water, D Dam water and Nak-Dong raw water). The examined turbidity substances were kaolin, acid clay, and modified clay (0.38 meq $NH_4{^+}-N/g$ clay). In Jar tests at different concentrations of the turbidity substances (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 mg/L) using the synthetic water, the turbidity substances improved the removal of turbidity, UV-254 absorbance and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 23.8-38.1%, 17.0-24.5% and 2.5-44.5%, respectively. The modified clay showed higher removal efficiencies than other substances. In Jar tests using the drinking water, 10 and 20 mg/L of modified clay enhanced the removal efficiencies of turbidity, UV-254 absorbance, DOC, trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) by 3.0~4.3%, 19.1~29.0%, 12~34.9%, 4.9~36.7%, and 1.6~30.2%, respectively.

In this research, we synthesized potassium ferrate(VI) acting as an oxidant, disinfectant, and coagulant, and used it to treat natural organic matter(NOM, HA and FA) in river water. The removal efficiencies obtained by $UV_{254}$ ranged from 20.7 to 73.6% for 10 mg/L HA and from 52.6 to 77.5% for 10 mg/L FA in Nakdong river sample as the ferrate dose varied from 2 to 46 mg/L(as Fe). However, the removal efficiencies by TOC analysis ranged from 0 to 20.3% for HA and from 0 to 26.6% for FA at the same ferrate doses. The removal efficiencies of NOM increased either with decreasing pH or with increasing temperature. The removal efficiency of HA by ferrate was comparable to those by traditional coagulants such as $Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}18H_2O$, $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, and FeO(OH). The reaction between ferrate and HA reached a steady state within 60 seconds, showing first-order with respect to the reaction time. The removal efficiencies of HA by traditional coagulants were improved by pretreatment of HA using a small amount of ferrate.
This study investigates the effect of effluent organic matter (EfOM) from sewage wastewater treatment plants on estrogenic activity reduction of bisphenol A (BPA) by UV photolysis. The EfOM and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SR-NOM) as reference were isolated into hydrophobic (HPO), transphilic (TPI) and hydrophilic (HPI) fractions depending on polarity. The specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) analysis indicated that EfOM showed similar properties to microbially derived organic matters with low hydrophobicity, which is different from SR-NOM having high hydrophobicity. UV irradiation upto 3 hr significantly reduced SUVA values of both EfOM and SR-NOM (p<0.0001), depending on the polarity of organic matters. In the absence of organic matters, the relative estrogenic activity (REA) of BPA ($5.0{\times}10^{-5}M$) was decreased from 86% to 63% by UV photolysis (2 hr). However, the decrease of mean REA was from 68% to 37% in the presence of organic matters, which was significantly independent on the type (EfOM or SR-NOM) and polarity (HPO, TPI or HPI) of organic matters (p>0.05). As a result, the reduced REA by UV photolysis of BPA with and without organic matters was 31% and 23%, respectively, suggesting that both EfOM and SR-NOM accelerated the photolytic reduction of BPA estrogenic activity.
This paper is intended as an application of the biological rope media sedimentation tank using biodegradability of BAC(Biological activated carbon) to the drinking water treatment system for the removal of NOM. The removal of DOC(Dissolved organic carbon), UV absorbance(UV$\_$254/), and turbidity were evaluated under various operation condition of a biological rope media sedimentation tank such as raw water-media process (Media 1), ozonation-media process (Media 2), and ozonation-coagulation/sedimentation-media process (Media 3). The raw water had DOC concentration of 1.3∼3.4 mg/L, UV$\_$254/ of 0.027∼0.039 cm$\^$-1/, and turbidity of 0.3∼4.5 NTU, respectively. The average DOC concentration were 2.2 mg/L in media 1, 1.8 mg/L in media 2, and 1.3 mg/l in media 3 from raw water, respectively. On the other hand, the DOC concentration in conventional sedimentation tank was 1.5 mg/l. Higher removal of the DOC was noted in media 3 than media 1 and media 2. The UV$\_$254/ of the treated water were 0.037 cm$\^$-1/ in media 1, 0.027 cm$\^$-1/ in media 2, and 0.014 cm$\^$-1/ in media 3 from raw water, respectively The UV$\_$254/ in conventional sedimentation tank was 0.014 cm$\^$-1/ which is similar to that of media 3. Average turbidity of the treated water was 1.1 NTU in media 1, 0.9 NTU in media 2, and 0.5 NTU in media 3, respectively. It is expected that the biological rope media sedimentation tank is a good alternative over the conventional sedimentation process from these results.

Hybrid ceramic membrane (HCM) processes that combined ozonation with a ceramic membrane (CM) or a reactive ceramic membrane (RM), an iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) incorporated-CM were investigated for membrane fouling control. Alumina disc type microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes doped with IONs by sintering method were tested under varying mass fraction of IONs. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that IONs were well-doped on the CM surface and doped IONs were approximately 50 nm in size. Change in the pure water permeability of RM was negligible compared to that of CM. These results indicate that IONs incorporation onto CM had little effect on CM performance in terms of the flux. Natural organic matter (NOM) fouling and fouling recovery patterns during HCM processes confirmed that the RM-ozonation process enhanced the destruction of NOM and reduced the extent of fouling more than the CM-ozonation process by hydroxyl radical formation in the presence of IONs on RM. In addition, analyses of NOM in the feed water and the permeate showed that the efficiency of membrane fouling control results from the NOM degradation during HCM processes; leading to removal and transformation of relatively high contents of aromatic, high molecular weight and hydrophobic NOM fractions.
Iron (hydro)oxides in aqueous environments are primarily formed due to mining activities, and they are known to be typical colloidal particles disturbing surrounding environments. Among them, hematites are widespread in surface environments, and their behavior is controlled by diverse factors in aqueous environments. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of environmental factors, such as ionic composition and strength, pH, and natural organic matter (NOM) on the behavior of colloidal hematite particles. In particular, two analytical methods, such as dynamic light scattering (DLS) and single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS), were compared to quantify and characterize the behavior of colloidal hematites. According to the variation of ionic composition and strength, the aggregation/dispersion characteristics of the hematite particles were affected as a result of the change in the thickness of the diffuse double layer as well as the total force of electrostatic repulsion and van der Walls attraction. Besides, the more dispersed the particles were, the farther away the aqueous pH was from their point of zero charge (PZC). The results indicate that the electrostatic and steric (structural) stabilization of the particles was enhanced by the functional groups of the natural organic matter, such as carboxyl and phenolic, as the NOM coated the surface of colloidal hematite particles in aqueous environments. Furthermore, such coating effects seemed to increase with decreasing molar mass of NOM. On the contrary, these stabilization (dispersion) effects of NOM were much more diminished by divalent cations such as Ca2+ than monovalent ones (Na+), and it could be attributed to the fact that the former acted as bridges much more strongly between the NOM-coated hematite particles than the latter because of the relatively larger ionic potential of the former. Consequently, it was quantitatively confirmed that the behavior of colloidal hematites in aqueous environments was significantly affected by diverse factors, such as ionic composition and strength, pH, and NOM. Among them, the NOM seemed to be the primary and dominant one controlling the behavior of hematite colloids. Meanwhile, the results of the comparative study on DLS and spICPMS suggest that the analyses combining both methods are likely to improve the effectiveness on the quantitative characterization of colloidal behavior in aqueous environments because they showed different strengths: the main advantage of the DLS method is the speed and ease of the operation, while the outstanding merit of the spICP-MS are to consider the shape of particles and the type of aggregation.

Numerical procedure of design optimality evaluation is studied for caisson structural systems. Two kinds of evaluation methods can be considered; mathematical optimality criteria method (MOCM) and numerical optimization method (NOM). The choice of the method depends on the available information of the system MOCM can be used only when the information of all function values, gradients and Lagrange multipliers is available, which may not be realistic in practice. Therefore, in this study, NOMs are applied for the structural optimality evaluation, where only design variables are necessary. To this end, Metropolis genetic algorithm (MGA) is advantageously used and applied for a standard optimization model of caisson composite breakwater. In the numerical example, cost and constraint functions are assumed to be changed from the orignal design situation and their effects are evaluated for optimality. From the theoretical consideration and numerical experience, it is found that the proposed optimality evaluation procedure with MGA-based NOM is efficient and practically applicable.
Humic substances is accounted for for the largest proportion in natural organic matter(NOM) and NOM is widely distributed in varying concentration in all aquatic and soil. They can affect water quality adversely in several ways by contributing undesirable color, complexing with metal and yielding metal concentrations exceeding normal solubility. Ozonation is one of the efficient treatments for degradation of humic substances which cause some problems in water treatment. Especially, the combination of ozone and granular activated carbon was applied to degradation humic acid in aquatic system. The aim of this work to test the available of acid-treated granular activated carbon as catalyst in the ozonation of humic acid.

The surface charge properties of a polymeric NF and a ceramic UF membranes were characterized in terms of zeta potential and acidity. Both the negative zeta potential and acidity values increased as pH increases due to ionizable acidic functional groups. Increased ionic strength reduced the acidity of the negatively-charged membrane surface as anticipated. Through these results, it can be envisioned are used to reject solutes with ionizable functional groups. Fouling of the negatively-charged membrane with natural organic matter (NOM) having a negative charge density was also investigated with respect to the surface charge. The surface charge of the NF membrane increased negatively when greater NOM adsorption onto the membrane surface occured.
Micro vibration isolation, typically originated from ground, is always a prime concern for the nano-measurement instruments such as Atomic Force Microscopes. A four mount active vibration isolation system is proposed in this paper. Modeling and control of such a four mount system was analyzed. Combined active-passive isolation principle is used for vibration isolation by mounting the instrument on a passively damped isolation system made of Elastomer along with the active stage in parallel that consists of very soft actuation system, the Voice Coil Motor. The active stage works in combination with the passive stage for working as a very low frequency vibration attenuator.
