  • Ultra-high temperature (UHT) processed full fat milk inoculated with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Bacillus stearothermophilus was exposed to 30-60 kV/cm square wave pulsed electric field (PEF) with $1\;{\mu}sec$ pulse width, and $26-210\;{\mu}sec$ treatment time in a continuous PEF treatment system. Eight log reduction was obtained for E. coli and P. fluorescens and 3 logs reduced for B. stearothermophilus under PEF treatment conditions of $210\;{\mu}sec$ treatment time, 60 kV/cm pulse intensity at $50^{\circ}$. There was no significant change in pH and titration acidity of milk after PEF treatment. The electrical energy required to achieve 8 log reduction for E. coli and P. fluorescens was estimated to be about 0.74 kJ/L.

  • This paper proposes the development of a new method for online analysis which measured acid concentration in a pickling line. Pickling is the most important step to remove surface scale layers and is strongly depending on the exactly controlled pickling liquor composition. Today, there is no feasible system available for the online control of pickling lines. Within this paper, new methods for online analysis of pickling liquors have been tested and implemented into an overall pickling process control tool. This method measured simultaneously the hydrochloric acid and iron ion concentration in a solution of hydrochloric acid by measuring the ultrasonic speed, the solution temperature, and the electrical conductivity. Experimental results showed excellent precision and the measurement error was ${\pm}2g/l$ compared with the neutralization titration measurement.

  • SO42-/Al2O3 powder was prepared by the coprecipitation method from the Al(NO3)3.9H2O and NH4OH and followed by being treated with various concentrations of sulfuric acid. The characterization of these powders was performed with XRD, BET and FT-IR. The surface charge density at alumina/KCl(aq) interface was measured by potentiometric titration method. From the experimental data it was shown that acid strength, specfic surface area, and structure of surface treated alumina were independent on the amount of exchanged SO42-. However, the acid amounts of alumina were increased with the amounts of SO42- formed on alumina surface. The relation between the acid amount of SO42- ion exchanged alumina surface and the surface charge density for SO42-/Al2O3/KCl(aq) interface was investigated.

  • A series of phosphodiesters of p-nitrophenyl phosphoryl derivatives were synthesized and used as a model substrate for phospholipase D (PLD). The phosphodiester substrates were synthesized from p-nitrophenyl phosphorodichloridate and corresponding alcohols with different chain lengths and polar groups. To measure the activity of PLD, either spectroscopic method for p-nitrophenol or pH-stat titration method was employed. For each substrate, effects of substrate concentration, pH, and $Ca^{2+}$ ion were examined. The kinetic parameters $V_{max}$ for the different substrates were varied depending on the chain lengths or charge of the alcohols. No calcium effect was observed in the hydrolysis of neutral and negatively charged alcohol derivatives, while positively charged choline derivative showed a strong $Ca^{2+}$ ion dependence.

  • A new highly salicylate-selective PVC membrane electrode based on tripodal tris-thiourea derivatives, L1 and L2, as neutral carriers is described. The electrodes display an excellent potentiometric response to salicylate ions and an anti-Hofmeister selectivity sequence in the following order: Salicylate? > ClO4 ? > Benzoate? > I? >NO3? > NO2? > Maleate? > Acetate? > Lactate? > Fumarate?. It also exhibited a near-Nernstian potential in a linear range of 5.0 × 10?5 - 1.0 × 10?1 M with a detection limit of 9.0 × 10?5 mol/L and a slope of ?59.9 mV/decade at a pH of 7.0 in a saline buffer solution at 25 oC. The stability constant (log KS) of the anionsionophore complex was also determined at 25 oC by a conductometric titration in DMSO solution.

  • We present an in-situ study of the interaction of a bimetallic Rh50Pd50 bulk crystal with O2, CO, and NO using ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and compare it to results for 10 nm nanoparticles with the same overall composition. The surface of the bulk crystal has less Rh present under both oxidizing and reducing conditions than the nanoparticles under identical conditions. Segregation and oxidation/reduction proceeds quicker and at lower temperature for nanoparticles than for the bulk crystal. The near surface of the Rh50Pd50 bulk crystal after high temperature vacuum annealing is ca. 9% Rh measured by XPS. Heating in 0.1 Torr O2 to $350^{\circ}C$ increases the Rh surface composition to ca. 40%. The surface can then be reduced by heating in H2 at $150^{\circ}C$, leading to a reduced surface of 30% Rh. Titration of CO from this Rh-rich surface proceeds at a much lower pressure than on the Rh-deficient starting surface.

  • It was found that cupric ion selective electrode, which was prepared by mixing CuS and $Ag_2S$ with the ratio four to one and PVC, was hard and durable. The response potentials were reproducible and linear in the range from 1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-1}M$ to 1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-5}M$ copper (II) solution and its slope was 25.0 mV per decade concentration at $298^{\circ}K$, slightly different from Nernstian slope. The copper (II) indicating electrode was applied in precipitation titration of 1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-2} M Cu(II)$ sample solution containing proper amounts $NaNO_3$ with 0.1 M NaOH standard solution. Also, this electrode could be used in complex titration of Zn(II), Mg(II), Ca(II) with EDTA and stability constant of EDTA complex of Ca(II) and Mg(II) was calculated by using known Cu-$EDTA^{2-}$ stability constant.

  • In this study, street canyons with a higher downwind building (so called, step-up street canyons) are considered for understanding characteristics of flow and reactive pollutants' dispersion as a basic step to understand the characteristics in wider urban areas. This study used a CFD_NIMR_SNU coupled to a chemistry module just including simple $NO_X-O_3$ photochemical reactions. First, flow characteristics are analyzed in step-up street canyons with four aspect ratios (0.33, 0.47, 0.6, 0.73) defined as ratios of upwind building heights to downwind building height. The CFD_NIMR_SNU reproduced very well the main features (that is, vortices in the street canyons) which appeared in the wind-tunnel experiment. Wind speed within the street canyons became weak as the aspect ratio increased, because volume of flow incoming over the upwind building decreased. For each step-up street canyon, chemistry transport model was integrated up to 3600 s with the time step of 0.5 s. The distribution patterns of $NO_X$ and $O_3$ were largely dependent on the mean flow patterns, however, $NO_X$ and $O_3$ concentrations were partly affected by photochemical reactions. $O_3$ concentration near the upwind lower region of the street canyons was much lower than background concentration, because there was much reduction in $O_3$ concentration due to NO titration there. Total amount of $NO_X$ in the street canyons increased with the aspect ratio, resulting from the decrease of mean wind intensity.

  • In this study, numerical simulations using community multiscale air quality (CMAQ) were conducted to analyze the change in ozone (O3) concentration due to the reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx)andvolatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions in Busan. When the NOx and, VOCs emissions were reduced by 40% and, 31%, respectively, the average O3 concentration increased by 4.24 ppb, with the highest O3 change observed in the central region (4.59 ppb). This was attributed to the decrease in O3 titration by nitric oxide (NO) due to the reduction of NOx emissions in Busan, which is classified as a VOCs-limited area. The distribution of O3 concentration changes was closely related to NOx emissions per area, and inland emissions were highly correlated with daily maximum concentrations and 8-h average O3 concentrations. Contrastingly, the effect of emission reduction depended on the wind direction. This suggests that the emission reduction effects may vary depending on the environmental conditions. Further research is needed to comprehensively analyze the emission reduction effects in Busan.

  • This study investigates the impact of increased adoption of eco-friendly vehicles on ozone (O3) concentrations in South Korea, utilizing the community multiscale air quality (CMAQ) model. In the summer of 2017 (June-August), we conducted two experiments: a BASE experiment, representing baseline emissions, and an R_30 experiment, involving a 30% emission reduction due to eco-friendly vehicles. The contrast between these experiments reveals that, while most air pollutants decreased with reduced vehicle emissions, O3 concentrations surprisingly increased (up to 2.1 parts per billion) across South Korea. A further examination of O3 concentration changes was conducted by analyzing daytime and nighttime variations as well as wind direction. During the daytime, O3 concentrations notably rose near metropolitan areas due to reduced O3 titration (O3 + NO → O2 + NO2) resulting from emission reductions. At nighttime, O3 concentrations exhibited a greater increase, attributed to the transport of daytime-generated O3 to rural regions. Notably, the impact of reduced emissions in metropolitan areas on O3 concentrations in downwind areas varied depending on the prevailing wind direction. These findings highlight that the promotion of eco-friendly vehicles, though effective in lowering certain air pollutants, might not directly influence O3 concentrations. This study underscores the need to comprehensively understand the complicated chemistry of O3 to develop effective strategies for air quality management.
