Green tea has been shown to have multifunctional health-promoting properties including cholesterol level control an antidiabetic effect and anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, inboth in vivo and in vitro experiments. We earlier reported antifungal and antibacterial effects of green tea extract by investigating cell membrane functions. The purpose of the present study was to purify and identify antimicrobial substances from green tea extract. Such materials were extracted from green tea (Camellia sinensis. var. sinensis) and purified by high-performance liquid chromatography. The antimicrobial substances in the extract were identified as epicatechin gallate and epigallocatechin gallate by nuclear magnetic resonance spectrophotometry.
The $[Ru(tpy)_2]Cl_2$ (tpy:2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) complex was synthesized and its structure was confirmed by $^1H$-NMR and elemental analysis. Its binding mode toward DNA was compared with the well-known $[Ru(bpy)_3]Cl_2$ (bpy:2,2-bipyridyl), using isotropic absorption, linear dichroism(LD) spectroscopy, and an energy minimization study. Compared to $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$, the $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex exhibited very little change in its absorption pattern, especially in the MLCT band, upon binding to DNA. Furthermore, upon DNA binding, both Ru(II) complexes induced a decrease in the LD magnitude in the DNA absorption region. The $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex produced a strong positive LD signal in the ligand absorption region, which is in contrast with the $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$ complex. Observed spectral properties led to the conclusion that the interaction between the ligands and DNA bases is negligible for the $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex, although it formed an adduct with DNA. This conclusion implies that both complexes bind to the surface of DNA, most likely to negatively charged phosphate groups via a simple electrostatic interaction, thereby orienting to exhibit the LD signal. The energy minimization calculation also supported this conclusion.
With the objective to design and synthesis of Schiff's base symmetrical liquid crystal dimmers and to study the effect of molecular structure variation ($o-ortho$, $m-meta$, $p-para$) and change in alkoxy terminal chain length on mesomorphic properties of liquid crystals, We have synthesized Schiff base dimers from dialdehyde derivative containing 2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxypropylene as short spacer with aniline derivatives having different lengths of terminal alkoxy chains ($n$ = 5, 7, 9). The chemical structure of the final products was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ($^1H$ NMR) spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties and optical textures of the resultant dimers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The existence of smectic A phase transition was confirmed by the observation of batonnets and fan shaped textures in optical microscopy when compound were heated from crystalline phase. All of the dimers of this series, with the exception of $\mathbf{2S_5}$ -ortho, -meta, -para, were thermotropic liquid crystal. The compound $\mathbf{2S_9}$ -meta was monotropic, while the rest were enantiotropic. It was found that the change in terminal alkoxy chain length has pronounced effect on the mesomorphic properties. The temperature range of smectic A phase window widens with increasing alkoxy chain length.
In this study, we synthesized poly(vinylimidazole-co-trifluoroethylmethacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) (PVTD) copolymer and introduced functional group through quaternization reaction for removing nitrate from drinking water. Also, optimizing conditions (reaction time, reaction temperature and functionalized agents concentration) for introducing the functional group were confirmed. The basic properties such as water uptake, swelling ratio, electrical resistance, ion exchange capacity and anion permselectivity for removing nitrate from drinking water were measured. The optimal values of water uptake, electrical resistance and ion exchange capacity of synthesized anion exchange membrane were 51.2%, $5.4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, and 1.04 meq/g, respectively.
A novel zwitterionic monomer 3-[(2-acrylamido)dimethylammonio]propanesulfonate (DMADAS) was designed and synthesized in this study. Then it was polymerized with acrylamide (AM) by free radical polymerization in 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution with ammonium persulfate ($(NH_4)_2S_2O_8$) and sodium sulfate ($NaHSO_3$) as initiator. The structure and composition of DMADAS and acrylamide-3-[(2-acrylamido)-dimethylammonio]propanesulfonate copolymer (P-AM-DMADAS) were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, $^1H$ NMR and elemental analyses. Isoelectric point (IEP) of P-AM-DMADAS was tested by nanoparticle size and potential analyzer. Solution properties of copolymer were studied by reduced viscosity. Antipolyelectrolyte behavior was observed and was found to be enhanced with increasing DMADAS content in copolymer. The results showed that the viscosity of P-AM-DMADAS is 5.472 dl/g in pure water. Electrolyte was added, which weakened the mutual attraction between sulfonic acid group and quaternary ammonium group. The conformation became loose, which led to the increase of reduced viscosity. The ability of monovalent and divalent cation influencing the viscosity of zwitterionic copolymer obeyed the following sequence: $Li^+$ < $Na^+$ < $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ < $Ca^{2+}$ < $Ba^{2+}$, and that of anion is in the order: $Cl^-$ < $Br^-$ < $I^-$, $CO{_3}^{2-}$ > $SO{_3}^{2-}{\approx}SO{_4}^{2-}$.

Background: This study aimed to identify antioxidant compounds from the seeds of Dolichos lablab L. by bioassay-guided isolation and recrystallization. Methods and Results: The water layer of D. lablab L. seed extract inhibits intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) expressing the 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA), Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase genes, as determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Two compounds were purified from the water layer of the seeds of D. lablab L. using column chromatography and prep-high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray Ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), their chemical structures were identified as 5-[(2-acetyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indazol-1-yl)carbonyl]-4,5-dihydro-3H-furan-2-one (C14H14N2O4) and stachyose. Conclusions: Two active antioxidant compounds were purified from the seed extract of D. lablab L. seed extract and the structures of these compounds were identified as C14H14O4N2 and stachyose.
Background: The plant Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich, belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family which occupies an important position in traditional medicine prescriptions. It has been reported that a freeze-dried aqueous extract of E. elaterium fruits has cytotoxic effects on the AGS human stomach adenocarcinoma cell line. We here focused on anticancer effects of the main chemicals purified from E. elaterium fruits. Materials and Methods: We isolated cucurbitacins D, E, and I from chloroform, and ethyl acetate fractions of a methanolic extract of E. elaterium fruits and assessed their cytotoxic effects on the AGS cell line by MTT assay. The methanolic extract was fractionated to petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate fractions. The compounds isolated by column chromatography were identified by NMR spectroscopy. Results: After 24 h of incubation with AGS cells, the IC50 values were 0.3, 0.1, and $0.5{\mu}g/ml$ for cucurbitacins D, E, and I respectively. Conclusions: This finding suggests that because of its cucurbitacins, E. elaterium fruit may have some cytotoxic effects on gastric cancer cells. Also, compared with D and I, cucurbitacin E showed greater potency in this regard.

Objectives: The major objective of this study is the oral dose toxicity test and skin irritation test of eco-friendly plasticizer using crude glycerol derived from the biodiesel process. Methods: Glyceroldiacetate laurate(GDL) was synthesized from glycerol monolaurat(GML) and acetic acid. The synthesis of the GDL plasticizer was measured with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscop(NMR) and FT-IR(Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer). To provide information on the safety of GDL, we carried out an oral dose toxicity test for GDL in Sprague-Dawley rats. Also, we carried out a skin irritation test for GDL in New Zealand White rabbits. Results: The oral dose toxicity test in Sprague-Dawley rats showed that GDL is a non-toxic material. The result of the skin irritation test on New Zealand White rabbits showed that GDL is non-irritating. Conclusions: From the results of oral dose toxicity test and skin irritation test, we concluded that the developed plasticizer showed excellent eco-friendly property. Based on our results, we confirmed the development of an eco-friendly non-phthalate plasticizer. Applicability for PVC toys and food and drug packaging materials was found.

Plasma medicine is an upcoming research area that has attracted the scientists to explore more deeply the utility of plasma. So, apart from the treating biomaterials and tissues with plasma, we have studied the effect of plasma with different feeding gases on modification of biomolecules. Additionally, we have checked the action of nanosecond pulsed plasma on the biomolecules. We have checked the plasma action on proteins ((Hemoglobin (Hb) Myoglobin (Mb) and lysoenzyme), calf thymus DNA and amino acids. The structural changes or structural modification of proteins and DNA have been studied using circular dichroism (CD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), gel electrophoresis, protein oxidation test, UV-vis spectroscopy and 1D NMR, while Liquid Chromatograph/Capillary Electrophoresis-Mass Spectrometer(LC/CE-MS) based qualitative bio-analysis have been used to study the modification of amino acids. We have also shown the effect of NaCl and ionic liquid on the formation of OH radicals using electron spin resonance and fluorescence techinques.

Low dielectric materials have been great attention in the semiconductor industry to develop high performance interlayer dielectrics with low k for Cu interconnect technology. In our study, the dielectric properties of SiOC /SiO2 thin film derived from polyphenylcarbosilane were investigated as a potential interlayer dielectrics for Cu interconnect technology. Polyphenylcarbosilane was synthesized from thermal rearrangement of polymethylphenylsilane around $350^{\circ}C{\sim}430^{\circ}C$. Characterization of synthesized polyphenylcarbosilane was performed with 29Si, 13C, 1H NMR, FT-IR, TG, XRD, GPC and GC analysis. From FT-IR data, the band at 1035 cm-1 is very strong and assigned to CH2 bending vibration in Si-CH2-Si group, indicating the formation of the polyphenylcarbosilane. Number average of molecular weight (Mn) of the polyphenylcarbosilane synthesized at $400^{\circ}C$ for 6hwas 2, 500 and is easily soluble in organic solvent. SiOC/SiO2 thin film was fabricated on ton-type silicon wafer by spin coating using 30wt % polyphenylcarbosilane incyclohexane. Curing of the film was performed in the air up to $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h. The thickness of the film is ranged from $1{\mu}m$ to $1.7{\mu}m$. The dielectric constant was determined from the capacitance data obtained from metal/polyphenylcarbosilane/conductive Si MIM capacitors and show a dielectric constant as low as 2.5 without added porosity. The SiOC /SiO2 thin film derived from polyphenylcarbosilane shows promising application as an interlayer dielectrics for Cu interconnect technology.
