Land-use changes due to the socio-economic environment influence landscape patterns and processes, which affect habitats and biodiversity. This study considers the effects of such land-use changes, particularly on the traditional rural "Maeul" forested landscape, by analyzing landscape structure and vegetation changes. Three study areas were examined that have seen their populations decrease and age over the last few decades. Five types of plant life-forms (Raunkier life-forms) were distinguished to investigate ecosystem function. Principle component analysis was used to understand vegetation dynamics and community characteristics based on a vegetation similarity index. Ordination analysis transformed species-coverage data was introduced to clarify vegetation dynamics. Landscape indices, such as area metrics, edge metrics, and shape metrics, showed that spatial heterogeneity has increased over time in all areas. Pinus densiflora was the main land-use plant type in all study areas but decreased over time, whereas Quercus spp. increased. Over a decade, P. densiflora communities shifted to deciduous oak and plantation. These findings indicate that the impact of human activities on the Maeul landscape is twofold. While forestry activities caused heavy disturbances, the abandonment of traditional human activities has led to natural succession. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the type and intensity of these human impacts on landscape heterogeneity relate differently to vegetation succession. This reflects the cause and consequence of patch dynamics. We discuss an approach for sustainable landscape planning and management of the Maeul landscape based on traditional management.
The paper is investigation of the secondary vegeation and succession at the forest fire area in Mt. Palgong. The survey was carried out from April, 1981 to Stempter, 1982. The floristic compositions were as follows: 50 families, 116 genera, 127 species, 15 varieties and 3 formae(145 kinds). Among them, the floristic composition of the pine floor vegetation of the unburned area was 43 families, 80 genera, 88 species, 10 varieties and 1 forma(99 kinds), and that of the secondary vegetatiion after forest fire was 46 families, 106 genera, 120 species, 14 varieties and 3 formae(137 kinds). Index of similarity between the burned and unburned area was 0.77. The biological type succeeded in $H-D_1-R_5$type, and the erect form(s) was prevailed. Carex humilis var. nana, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, and lespedeza cyrtobotrya were dominant species in the $ B_1; and; B_2$ area of the seventh year after forest fire. In the degree of succession, species diversity, and evenness index, DS, H, and e of the $B_1$ area were higher than those of the $B_2$ area. In the soil properties, it assumed that pH, total nitrogen, and available phosphores of the burned area were nearly recovered to those of the unburned area.
The purpose of the study is to understand the ecological characteristics of the early stage of community formation of epilithic diatoms. The samples were daily collected from a site of the Kumho River during 70 days from October 13 to December 21 in 2002. Total 126 diatom taxa collected in the study were classified into 114 species and 12 varieties belonging to 26 genera. About 80% of the taxa collected from the artificial substrata during the whole studying period were observed until tenth day from the start time of the study. In the study the successional process of the diatom community was divided into the three stages of the early, the middle and the later by cluster analysis based on the similarities in species composition among the communities. Cocconeis placentula Ehrenb. and C. placentula var. lineata (Ehrenb.) V.H., horizontally positioned species, would be divided into the early successional species, and Diatoma vulgre Bory, vertically positioned species, was the later successional species. Cell densities and species composition of the diatoms on the artificial substrata were closely similar to them of natural substrata after 40th day from the start time of the study.

This study was surveyed to identify changes of flora during three years after restoration in Cheonggyecheon stream. There are four sections in Cheonggyecheon. One and two sections are upper streams and three and four sections are down streams. It was surveyed 328 species in 2006. In 2007 and 2008, 446 and 444 species were found, respectively. This result shows that Cheonggyecheon is unstable initial condition in restored stream ecosystem. Naturalized species were 58 species in 2006 and it was respectively 61 and 63 species in 2007 and 2008. Hazard species of ecosystem were three common species during survey period. In appearance of flora per section, three and four sections constituted by natural sites such as point bars, wide flood plains, riffles and ponds, marshes, etc. were surveyed more species than one and two constructed by concrete materials and narrow flow channel. Recently, as time goes by, introduced species are being increased. And succession has mainly been progressed by one year or binary herbs and perennial herbs. Compared with other restored streams, Cheonggyecheon showed more flora than Yangjaecheon and Anyangcheon. It is judged owing to length of surveyed site, various planted species and area of inhabitation space. To manage restored stream ecosystem, monitoring is essential. Further, because change of vegetation after restoration in Cheonggyecheon is very important, continuous monitoring about Flora and Naturalized species and Hazard species of ecosystem is also very important.
In order to make plan for landscape construction by ecological methods in Yukong R & D Complex site, environmental factors and structure of plant community were investigated and analyzed around Yukong R & D Complex site of Daeduk. The result of this study were as follows: 1. In the result by the classification of TWINSPAN and ordination (DCA) techniques for analysing of plant community structure, thirty plant community structure, thirty plots were divided into four groups according to soil moisture and succession trends were seem to be from the development of subsidiary vegetation through Pinus densiflora, Quercus spp., Robinia psudoacasia community to Q. acutissima community. So this result was proposed to validity of vegetation introduction for planning of ecological landscape construction in studied site. 2. On the analysis of environmental factors by ordination techeniques, the plant community were divided by soil moisture. Soilcondition will be fertilized by introduction of broad-leaved tree and the development of succession trends from the present state of plant community to Q. acutissima community. 3. The problems of horiticultural places happened to studied site, so horiticultural places for ecological landscape construction was proposed planting techniques that were considered to soil suitability, economical efficiency, native species and wildlife. 4. If we attempt to ecological landscape designs on natural systems and use natural processes to achieve desired end-points, we are more likely to produce self-sustaining solutions.
A village grove is the one fostered and protected for a district's traditional life near the vicinity of a ruderal village. This research is done to grasp potential natural vegetation, to use a basis data needed for its management and preservation as well as restoration project by examining the vegetation and flora targeting a village grove of the southern district of Gyeonggi-do which has been seriously damaged subsequent to a rapidly progressing city development. According to the survey, there appeared an outgrowth flora of Pteridophyta consisting of 69 families, 136 genera, 20 varieties, 3 forms, 170 species-totalling to 193 taxa. Urbanization index was revealed to 4.55% and naturalization rate 6.74%. In life-cycle pattern, perennials were found to show the highest distribution rate; in infiltration-multiplication strategies, human wave tactics type was found to be the highest 51%, consisting of 98 species, and naturalization rate also was revealed to be 6.74%. The vegetation unit was divided into a total of 11 patterns, such as a community of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Pinus rigida community, Pinus densiflora-Castanea crenata community, Pinus rigida community, Pinus rigida-Castanea crenata community, Pinus rigida-Quercus acutissima community, Castanea crenata community, Castanea crenata-Quercus acutissima community, Quercus acutissima community, Quercus acutissima-Robinia pseudo-acacia community and Robinia pseudo-acacia community. Quercus acutissima community is of a community type dominated by Quercus acutissima, in place of Pinus densiflora community selected by natural succession.
This study observes the purchased lands in riparian areas of Suncheon City region and proposes a reasonable management method. For the study, the site surveying and analysis on the neglected purchased lands is executed, then, based on the site analysis result, the appropriate management method for each neglected purchased land is established. Each management method is approached from the ecological restoration perspective. According to site surveying and analysis of the neglected purchased lands, most of the sites were bare and agricultural lands. The reason for this is thought to be as when purchasing a land, the areas with higher nonpoint source pollution are bought preferentially. As for the dominant species coverage, 26% ($364,000m^2$) of the total neglected purchased land area in Sucheon City was covered with the dominated species, and for the exotic species coverage, 17% ($232,000m^2$) of the total neglected purchased land area in Sucheon City was covered with the exotic species. The survey site constituted of five different invasive species such as Japanese Hop (Humulus japonicus), Daisy Fleabane (Erigeron annuus), and Evening Primrose (Oenothera odorata). As for the natural succession on site, about 47% of the area showed poor natural succession process. The reason for this outcome is understood as having a lack of appropriate management for purchased lands. Based on the site surveying and analysis, especially the current management state of the and its location, the research site was categorized into preservation, restoration, and improvement sites. During the establishment of the ecological riparian belt, the comprehensive management for preservation, restoration, and improvement of the purchased lands should be executed.
Freshwater cyanobacterial genus Dolichospermum is one of the most commonly spotted types of phytoplankton, whereas a limited number of studies on morphology of Dolichospermum spp. have been performed in South Korea. The purpose of this study is to investigate the succession pattern of cyanobacteria after weir construction, as well as morphological characteristics of Dolichospermum spp. from natural samples collected in the weir regions of Nakdong River. A total of 31 cyanobacterial taxa observed in this study were classified as belonging to 15 genera, 5 families, and 3 orders. Among them, morphological characteristics in the four species were classified into genus Dolichospermum, for most of the planktic former members of the genus Anabaena, were observed through light microscopy. Water bloom frequently occurred in the middle region of Nakdong River, the maximum number of cyanobacterial species appeared in the lower region of Nakdong River. The appearance of order Chrooccocales was only observed during summer when population density of Microcystis aeruginosa reached an annual peak. In contrast, filamentous cyanobacteria was observed throughout the whole year, even if when water temperature was lower than $5^{\circ}C$. It implied that the low-temperature-adapted filamentous cyanobacteria can grow in a range of water temperatures. Coil diameter of D. crassum from natural samples was $75{\sim}140{\mu}m$ ($ave.=91.3{\mu}m$; n = 94), slightly larger than those reported by previous studies. Dolichospemum smithii ($Kom{\grave{a}}rek$) Wacklin et al. 2009, was described for the first time in Nakdong River.
Mt. Nam (265m), a city park of Seoul, was originally covered with a typical deciduous broad-leaved forests in Central Korea. However, the park forests have been changed the development for various purpose such as the construction of castle wall, road way, broadcasting station, theater, hotel and apartments, in addition, to thoughtless plantation or alien plant introduction. Human population growth from ca. 100 thousands persons less in that time established Seoul as the capital of choseon dynasty in 1394 to ten millions over persons at present, accelerated the vegetational changes of the park. mt. Nam boundary in those days of sunjong (1908) also was much shrinked as much the range of 300 m distance in the northern most to 700 or 800m distance in some places. The actual vegetation of Mt. Nam largely can be classified by floristic composition into two plant communities of Quercus mongolica community and Pinus densiflora community, four plantations of Pinus rigida, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Populus tomentiglandulosa and other tree species, and on mixed forest with native and alien tree species in secondary succession stage (Yim et al. 1987). The restoration movement of Mt. Nam toward to the natural condition of forest or biodiversity is moving now. However, in the movement there are some problems such as the lack of ecological consideration and the undesirable decision of priority in the practice. A warning should be given, especially, on the undesirable plantation of non-native tree species restricting the forest succession, as in the case of southern slope of Mt. Nam. First of all, the most importance in Mt. Nam management is that the restoration for natural forest and biodiversity should be carried on the basis of integrated ecological principles based on the site evaluation.
