The purpose of this study is to investigate the weather, soil characteristics, and location environment of Pimpinella brachycarpa natural habitats in order to gather the essential information for the conservation of these habitats. P. brachycarpa are distributed throughout Korea and are mainly found to grow in shady and humid areas between 500 and 1,200 m above sea level. The average annual temperature in Mt. Duta was 13.1℃, and the average annual precipitation in Mt. Jungwon was 1,509 mm, which was higher than in other regions. The pH ranged from 4.42 to 4.97, indicating slight acidity. The total N content ranged from 0.18% to 0.68%, and the available P ranged from 13.43 to 531.56 mg/kg, demonstrating notable regional variations. The species diversity index (H') was highest at Mt. Ilwol, measuring 1.713. The evenness (J') ranged from 0.983 to 0.993, and the dominance (D') ranged from 0.007 to 0.017. The similarity index was very low, averaging 24.86%, and it was divided into communities of Wilson's elm (Ulmus davidiana var. japonica) and communities of Korean maple (Acer pseudo-siebodianum).

We studied the efficacy of the 'Natural Enemy in First (NEF)' technology in controlling thrips and aphids in tomato greenhouses, relative to the natural enemy and conventional chemical treatments. This technology combined the use of natural enemies of the pests (parasites/predators) with their food sources/habitats, and the treatment commenced at the time of planting. The 'NEF' technology, for the control of thrips, had an efficacy 32% higher than the natural enemy treatment, and 82% higher than the conventional chemical treatment. The average population density of aphids after the treatment was not significantly different among all treatments.
Purple ammannia (Ammannia coccinea Rottb.) is an exotic weed originated from North America. It was known to be a noxious weed in a rice paddy field for the competition with rice. We investigated its distribution and habitat types in Korea to obtain basic data for the management plan of this species. Although purple ammannia is currently not a dominant species in natural habitats, its nationwide distribution was found in our study. We categorized the types of its habitats as margins of rice paddies, abandoned paddy fields, riverine wetlands and reservoirs. Particularly, purple ammannia plants were frequently located along banks of irrigation channels that ran through rice paddies and surrounding wetlands. Because they mainly occurred along the direction of water flow, we considered that the plants have spread along water courses. A total of 69 vascular plant taxa was identified at the habitats of purple ammannia. The largest group of life form among purple ammannia population was therophytes, which indicates that purple ammannia mostly grow in the disturbed habitats.
This study was conducted to determined the status and geographical distribution of the alien invasive Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) turtle on Jeju Island. We found thirty-two Red-eared slider habitats including twenty-five ponds, five agricultural reservoirs, a puddle and a stream. Among those, thirteen sites are newly determined habitats of the turtle. The remaining nineteen are previously reported. However, we could not find any turtles at nine sites, which were documented as turtle habitats in earlier reports. A total of one hundred thirty-three turtles were observed. Among them, we determined that thirty-nine were juvenile turtles, found in nineteen different habitats, indicating estimating that Red-eared sliders produced their progeny in the wild of this island. Because of geographical isolation by the ocean, no freshwater turtle had been found until $19^{th}$ Century. Therefore, the increased number of finding sites and Red-eared sliders indicate the possibility of human release of their pets or for other purposes, and natural propagation in the wild on Jeju Island. Our findings will be useful for management planning to deal with this invasive species, and implementation of a conservation program for native wildlife on Jeju Island.

The biggest factor in the success of breeding animals is selection of foods, which is determined by quality and quantity of habitats(Newton, 2003), in the case of This high biomass wetlands as an indicator of ecosystem function about Common Kestrel's choice of hunting area is expected to be an important clue of quality and quantity of habitats. For this study, it is divided into four types(Glasslands, Paddy fields, Dry fields, Rparian land) about Common Kestrel's hunting area in Yugu-eup, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Recorded the behavior of Common Kestrel for three years during the breeding season from March to June(2014~2016). Result of investigation, hunting area showed a high hunting behavior in riversides and flight-hunting was frequently investigated from may to June. In addition flight-hunting's main food acquisition is mammal(the vole), while perching behavior's main food acquisition is insect according to the fact flight-hunting were mainly done in riversides, perching behavior were highly investigated than flight-hunting at glasslands and paddy fields and dry field. Hunting spot's coverage rate of plants covering the ground showed differences depending on hunting areas, but height of plants were not significant. Height of the plant according to hunting methods of flight-hunting to catch mammal(vole) was analyzed to prefer lower height than perching behavior Based on these results riversides are considered as a very important environmental factors for Common Kestrel's prey selection in breeding session.
The wetland ecosystem has a key role in climate change and can capture and store carbon long-term as blue carbon. Currently, the Republic of Korea and People's Republic of China are preparing for the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Phase II inscription, and cross-border cooperation among the two Koreas and the People's Republic of China is expected in term of the coastal wetland in the Yellow Sea region. However, there is a lack of research on the importance of coastal wetland in the Yellow Sea region for migratory bird habitats, roosting sites, feeding grounds, and stop-over sites. Thus, this study focused on the coastal wetland of the Yellow Sea region, including the southwestern coastal wetlands in the Republic of Korea, the Yancheng National Nature Reserve in the People's Republic of China designated as UNESCO World Natural Heritage, and the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which is listed on the Tentative List. The cooperation for ecosystem conservation between the two Koreas and China was analyzed. The importance of coastal wetlands in the Yellow Sea region as habitats for migratory birds, roosting sites, feeding grounds, and stop-over sites, significant characteristics of Yellow Sea coastal wetlands, and conditions for cooperation among three countries, were analyzed. The direction of ecosystem conservation cooperation for coastal wetlands in the Yellow Sea region in this study will be developed into Pan-Yellow Sea conservation.

Natural disturbance and environmental pressure on natural ecosystems are gradually increasing, and the cause is significantly related to large-scale environmental pollution, global warming, decreasing biodiversity and habitat fragmentation. Environmental impact assessment(EIA) in Korea has been focused on distribution and composition of fauna and flora as major evaluation aspects in ecosystem assessment. It is well known that those characteristics of flora and fauna strongly depend on characteristics and quality of habitat and ecosystem. However, there is no items to assess habitat and ecosystems of spatial ecological system in EIA. Many countries are trying to develop the EIA items to consider the spatial characteristics of habitat and ecosystem and those ecological dynamics as well as species level. In this stream, landscape ecology is emerging discipline to examine spatial pattern and ecological process within/between habitats and ecosystems. Landscape ecological analysis, as a special tool for ecosystem evaluation, has been appropriately adopted to the EIA system in the advanced countries. This review paper tries to introducing the possibilities of landscape ecological concept into the Korean EIA system.
As a number of archaea are ubiquitously found in non-extreme habitats, elucidation of their functional roles becomes currently an emerging issue. However, most of them are unable to grow in pure culture and so it remains to be established. In order to find genes lacking in the genome of an ammonia-oxidizing archaeon (AOA), we here report on the comparative analyses of an AOA genome with those of experimentally or theoretically established minimal genomes for independent growth. We assessed the genes lacking in AOA using logic of clusters of orthologous groups (COG), remote homology, consensus sequence weight matrix, function-based motif or domain, and then further excluded genes encoding hypothetical orarchaea-specific proteins. The results of these combination analyses revealed 19 candidate genes lacking in the genome of an AOA. Thus, our results provide a possibility of inducing independent growth of AOA when supplemented with product (s) of the lacking gene (s), and also give a chance for finding new proteins with novel sequence or structure space even if the predicted lacking-genes will be found using another algorithms or biochemical studies.

The attraction activity of the natural baits for sea eels(Astroconger myriaster) was surveyed by using fishing traps in the 3 different fishing ground of southern coastal waters of Korea. Twenty four different baits were experimented and weight for each bait was 50g, the optimal minimum weight owing to our preliminary test. Among the above 24 baits, anchovy(Engraulis japonica), sardine(Sardinops melanosticta), or marine worms(Neanthes japonica)were most effective. In case of sardine bait, the body showed higher attraction activity than the head or viscera and the builded juice of anchovy or sardine showed higher attraction activity than spoiled one.
Heterotrichous ciliates were isolated from marine and brackish habitats in Korea, and their morphology, infraciliature and morphometrical characters were investigated using silver impregnated methods. These three Condylostoma species were identified as Condylostoma curva Burkovsky, 1970, C. minutum Bullington, 1940 and C. spatiosum Ozaki and Yagiu in Yagiu, 1944. The species of Condylostoma based on morphology are highly variable in most of characters and distinguished as following. Condylostoma curva is oval to elongate ellipsoidal, size about $245{\times}100{\mu}m$ in vivo, and conspicuously dark greenish brown with cortical granules on their surface, buccal cavity relatively large about 40% of body length, 5-11 macronuclear nodules, 4-8 frontal cirri serially arranged and 22-38 somatic kineties. Condylostoma minutum is elongate ellipsoidal and the size about $310{\times}55{\mu}m$ in vivo, buccal field about 35% of body length, 12-20 macronuclear nodules, adoral zone consisted of 82-107 membranelles, large and long one frontal cirrus and 38-44 somatic kineties. Condylostoma spatiosum is large elongate ellipsoidal, size about $670{\times}105{\mu}m$ in vivo, buccal cavity about 25% of body length, 11-25 macronuclear nodules, 111-144 adoral membranelles, membrane-like 2 frontal cirri, 49-74 somatic kineties. These three Condylostoma species are described here for the first time in Korea.
