The NATM(New Austrian Tunnelling Method) has been used for tunnelling since 1980's. But Collapses of tunnel under construction take place frequently, especially at urban areas because of adjacent buildings, underground conduits and traffic loads. This paper is a case study on the reinforcement method of subway tunnel at urban areas. In this study, ground inspection, geological investigation, laboratory test and numerical analysis by means of FDM program were carried out. The tunnel excavation was stopped because of over excessive brake of tunnel crown and shotcrete was installed to prevent deformation of adjacent ground as the temporary method. From the result of field survey and geological investigation, it is found that the soft weathered soil was distributed to the ground of tunnel invert unlike original investigation. The results of the analysis and the study show that the SGR(Space Grouting Rocket) method and Umbrella method can be applied for the stability of tunnel excavation and in addition the reinforcement of concrete lining is required for long-term stability of tunnel.

Unlike NATM tunnels, Shield TBM tunnels have split linings. Therefore, the stress distribution of the lining is different even if the lining is under the same load. Representative methods for analyzing the stress generated in lining in Shield TBM tunnels include Non-joint Mode that does not consider connections and a 2-ring beam-spring model that considers ring-to-ring joints and segment connections. This study is an analysis method by Break-joint Mode. However, we do not consider the structural role of segment lining connections. The effectiveness of the modeling is verified by analyzing behavioral characteristics against vibration loads by modeling with segment connection interfaces to which vertical stiffness and shear stiffness, which are friction components, are applied. Unlike the Non-joint mode, where the greatest stress occurs on the crown for static loads such as earth pressure, the stress distribution caused by contact between segment lining and friction stiffness produced the smallest stress in the crown key segment where segment connections were concentrated. The stress distribution was clearly distinguished based on segment connections. The results of static analysis by earth pressure, etc., produced up to seven times the stress generated in Non-joint mode compared to the stress generated by Break-joint Mode. This result is consistent with the stress distribution pattern of the 2-ring beam-spring model. However, as for the stress value for the train vibration load, the stress of Break-joint Mode was greater than that of Non-joint mode. This is a different result from the static mechanics concept that a segment ring consisting of a combination of short members is integrated in the circumferential direction, resulting in a smaller stress than Non-joint mode with a relatively longer member length.
A series of nurmerical analysse for the earhtquake of Iran railway tunnles under construction by NATM(New Astrian Tunnelling Method) were careid out throuth a pseudo-dynamic analyses techique used in a FFM computer program, DWTAP(Daewoo Tunnel Analysis Program), and the results are described in the paper. The analyses were performErl for two case;one is for the primary supports and the other is for the rompletEd permanent roncrete lining. The horizontal and verical groW1d accelerations for the design were estimatEd as 0.34 g and 0.23 g, respectively based on the historical reismic rerords in the proj3et area and the empirical equations. The results show that the turmel would be safe W1der the anticipitOO earthquake motion with the permanent roncrete lining, but some minor cracks rnigt be developErl in the primary shotcrete lining without any significant structural damages.
In this study, the tunnel loads acting on the concrete lining are analyzed by comparing three methods - Terzaghi table, Terzaghi formula and Ground-Lining Interaction (G.L.I) model. The tunnel loads are analyzed by FLAC 2D. And the G.L.I model is analyzed under various rock mass ratings, tunnel depths (20~80m) and in-situ stress ratios ($K_0$=0.5~2.0). Terzaghi's method can be applied only to weathered rocks and soils, and cannot reflect the effect of various tunnel depths and in-situ stress ratio. The proposed G.L.I model can not only be applied to various ground conditions, but also relieves the tunnel loads by up to 30%.

Cost effective design and construction are necessary to establish the design concept of tunnel lining. Loosening load acting on the concrete lining is compared with Terzaghi tunnel theory and numerical analysis. It is analyzed under the condition of weathered rock and soil with varying in-situ stress ratio ($K_0$). Based on the result, loosening load calculated by Tcrzaghi tunnel theory is much greater than numerical analysis results. And the load calculated in weathered soil is lager than weathered rock condition. As in-situ stress ratio increases, the stress acting on the tunnel lining decreases in Terzaghi theory rapidly, whereas there is little effect in numerical analysis.

The precise inspection for safety and diagnosis (PISD) of tunnel has been conducted by the special act on safety control of public structures. However, the present assessment for the segmental lining of TBM tunnel has limitation such as: NDTs for integrity, segmental configuration for field inspection, and consideration for jacking system. Even if the number of TBM tunnel is less than 1% of enrolled facility in FMS, more attention to maintenance should be necessary due to its usage such as multi-use facility and national important facility. Compared to NATM tunnel, excavated by drilling and blasting and then installed lining by cast-in-place within 6~12 m, TBM tunnel is cut out ground by disk and cutter-bit and then assembled 7 pieces of precast segment, 1.2~1.4 m wide. Different features of design, construction, and maintenance should be considered to be more exact evaluation of TBM tunnel. The characteristics of defect is categorized and analyzed with 11 operational TBM tunnels in domestic subway. To be more comprehend various particular defects, foreign studies have been also adapted. Crack and leakage are categorized in 7 patterns. Breakage/spalling and corrosion are also grouped into 3 patterns. Patterned defects or damages are fed back in design, construction, and are useful guidelines for maintenance stage in future.
For the purpose of determining the thickness of concrete lining and detect of the cavity where may be located behind tunnel lining, IE (Impact-Echo) method it effectively useful in the tunnel safety diagnosis and the quality control during the construction. As a part of case study, we applied IE method to various tunnel structure types such as road tunnel and subway tunnel constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) and ASSM (American Steel Support Method). As tunnel specifications estimated from this method were compared with coring data, design drawing and other survey results, it was very good agreement with each other. In conclusion, we verified that IE method shows an accurate and reliable result. The conventional interpretation of IE method in frequency domain gives only vertical information at a certain point. However, the interpretation using time-frequency analysis and depth section imaging technique from two dimensional profiling surveys can show more reliable information about structure inside.

Shotcrete is used as a permanent lining in single shell tunnels even though shotcrete has been used as a temporary lining in NATM tunnels. Therefore, the accurate evaluation of strength parameters is very crucial because the reliable estimation of loads acting on the shotcretes is necessary to maintain the stability of tunnels. The evaluation of strength parameters of the ground far the single shell tunnels should be investigated to adapt the method in Korea because the geological condition of Korea is different from that of other country. Rock classification and strength parameters obtained from 25 tunnel sites were investigated for this study. Support types fur the different rock classes are suggested for the single shell tunnels in Korea based on the NMT because Q-system has been widely used in Korea. The support types in terms of both Q and RMR values are given based on the correlation of Q and RMR values obtained from the case studies.

Shotcrete lining is an important material for the stability of tunnels in NATM tunnels. However, stressmeters for stress measurements of shotcrete lining are installed in the field without performance verification because of a lack of research on methods, procedures, regulations, and reliability of measurement equipment. To solve this problem, all shotcrete stressmeters currently used in Korea were investigated. For each stressmeter, external inspection and structural and functional inspection were performed to identify defects and problems in devices. For this purpose, a shotcrete stressmeter performance test device capable of load loading in stages was developed and obtained KOLAS certification. Using the device, stressmeter performance tests were conducted. Structural problems of integrated- and cell-type shotcrete stressmeters were identified through concrete mold tests, and improvement plans and performance verification procedures were suggested. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the preparation of regulations for the performance verification of shotcrete stressmeters and the selection of measuring instruments in the field in the future.
