A single particle analytical technique, named low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA), was applied to characterize samples collected at a subway station and ambient samples in Seoul. According to their chemical composition, many distinctive particle types were identified. For samples collected at the subway station platform, the major chemical species are carbon-rich, organic, aluminosilicates (AlSi), AlSi/C, AlSi/$CaCO_{3},\;CaCO_{3},\;SiO_{2},\;and\;Fe_{2}O_{3}$. For outdoor samples, carbon-rich, organic, AlSi, $CaCO_{3},\;SiO_{2},\;NaNO_{3},\;(Na,Mg)NO_{3},\;Na(CO_{3},NO_{3},SO_{4}),\;and\;(NH_{4})_2SO_4$, are abundantly encountered. Samples collected at the subway station show very high contents of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, both in coarse and fine fractions, which come from brake block, subway train wheel, electric contact materials, etc. It is demonstrated that the single-particle characterization using this low-Z particle EPMA technique provided detailed information on various types of chemical species in indoor and outdoor samples.
That different mechanisms are involved in the secretory processes by the liver and the kidney of various dyes has been indicated by Sporter (1959), Kim and Hong (1963). Andrews (1958). suggested that a striking difference in the dye-secretory mechanism existed even in the same organ from species to species. Hence, the attempt has been made to study in the rabbit the secretory processes by the live. and the kidney of either phenol red (PSP), bromsulfalein (BSP) or green in the presence of Na-acetate, Na-taurocholate, P-Aminohippurate (PAH) or Benemid. In 37 rabbits, weighing about 2kg., anesthetized with ether, a dye was administered in such 8 manner that the plasma concentration was kept at a relatively constant level throughout the whole experimental period. Hepatic bile sad urine samples were quantitatively collected through the canulae which were previously inserted into the common bile duct (with the cystic duct ligated) and the urinary bladder, respectively, while arterial samples were taken from a femoral artery. After 50 min from the onset of dye administration, these samples were obtained every 10 mit for a period of 40 min. This was followed by the administration of either Na-acetate, Na-tauro-cholate, PAH or Benemid with a repetition of the same sample collecting procedures just stated. The results may be summarized as follows: 1) Na·acetate augmented urinary clearance of PSP by nearly 300 per cent, but lowered urinary BSP clearance by about 50 per cent. It enhanced biliary BSP clearance by 40% and had no effect on biliary psp clearance. 2) Na-taurocholate lowered biliary and urinary clearance of PSP by 10 per cent and 30 per cent respectively, and had no effect on both biliary and urinary clearance of BSP. 3) PAH lowered both biliary and urinary excretion of BSP and PSP, while it lowered the biliary excretion of indocyanine green which was excreted only in the bile. 4) Benemid suppressed BSP excretion by the liver and the kidney. 5) raper chromatographic analysis of PSP and of BSP in the bile and urine samples gave the following results: a) PSP Ivas excreted in the urine and bile only in free forms, and no modification in the excretory pattern was brought about by Na-taurocholate. b) BSP was excreted in the urine in 4 different conjugated froms and in the bile in both 3 different conjugated forms and in a free form. Na-taurocholate modified the excretory pattern of the urinary BSP.

The accuracy and precision of a modified method of NIOSH Method 7600 and EPA method 218.6 was determined for analyzing hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), collected on PVC filter from workplace air. The method was designed to extract from Cr(VI) on PVC filter with a alkali solution, 2% NaOH/3% $Na_2CO_3$, and to analyze it using ion chromatography/visible absorbance detection(IC/VAD). The results and conclusion are as the following. 1. The peak of Cr(VI) was separated sharply on chromatogram and was linearly related with Cr(VI) concentration in sloution. The correlation coefficient was 0.9999 in a calibration curve. The limit of detection was 0.25 $0.25{\mu}g/sample$. 2. The accuracy(% recovery) was 93.3% in a set of sample($9-50{\mu}g$) stored for a day, and 100.1%($10-60{\mu}g$) in another set of samples stored for 2 hours. It is assumed that the difference in recovery by storage time was due to reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). 3. The precision(coefficient of variation, CV) of the method was 0.015 in spiked samples with Cr(VI) standard solution, and 0.010 in spiked samples with plating solution from a chrome electroplating factory. The overall CV in all types of samples was 0.0013. 4. The Cr(VI) was stable in 2% NaOH/3% $Na_2CO_3$ at least for 10 hours. In conclusion, the IC/VAD method is appropriate for determining low-level Cr(VI) in workplace air containing various interferences.

Twenty water samples (eleven groundwater and nine geothermal water samples) were collected to elucidate hydrogeochemical characteristics of the groundwater and geothermal water in the Dongrae hot-spring area and its vicinity. Major and minor elements were analyzed for ground and geothermal water samples. Physicochemical properties of the groundwater and the geothermal water were examined and chemical composition of the two waters were compared. Factor and correlation analyses were carried out to simplify the physicochemical data into grouping some factors and to find interaction between them. The groundwaters belong to $Ca-HCO_3$ type, while the geothermal waters belong to Na-Cl type. The Na and Cl concentrations in the Dongrae hot-spring area are higher than those of other granite areas in South Korea. The Na/Cl weight ratio ranges from 0.7 to 1.3 for the geothermal waters. On the phase stability diagram groundwaters fall effectively in the field of stability of kaolinite, while geothermal waters fall in the stability field of microcline or kolinite depending on the chemical composition system. Based on the Na-K, Na-K-Ca and Na-K-Ca-Mg geothermometers, the geothermal reservoir is estimated to have equilibrium temperature between 115 and $145^{\circ}C$.
Functional properties such as nitrogen solubility, emulsifying property, foaming property, and water and oil absorption of sesame and perilla protein isolates were determined at pH range of 2-10 and ionic strength of 0-0.5M NaCl. Nitrogen solubility of protein isolates in distilled water showed minimum value at pH6.0 in sesame and at pH 4.0 in perilla and soybean protein isolates, and significantly increased above pH 8.0 in all samples. Addition of 0.1M NaCl solution increased nitrogen solubility, however, decreased in 0.5M NaCl solution. Emulsion activities of all the protein isolates showed minimum value at pH 4.0 and increased in 0.1M NaCl solutions while it was reduced in 0.5M NaCl solutions. The perilla protein isolate showed higher emulsion activity than that of soybean and sesame protein isolates at above pH 6.0. Foaming capacities of sesame and perilla protein isolates were lower than soybean protein isolate and generally all of the samples showed higher profiles in NaCl solutions. The foaming stability of soybean isolate decreased abruptly in 10min, while it was slowly decreased for sesame and perilla isolates during initial 30 min. Oil absorption capacity of perilla protein isolate was higher than that of sesame and soybean protein isolates. Water absorption capacity was similar among the three samples studied.
Electron bombardment to silicate glass during electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) causes outward migration of Na from the excitation volume and subsequent decrease in the measured X-ray count rates of Na. To acquire precise Na2O content of silicate glass, one should use proper analytical technique to avoid or minimize Na migration effect or should correct for decreases in the measured Na X-ray counts. In this study, we analyzed 8 silicate glass standard samples using automated Time Dependent Intensity (TDI) correction method of Probe for EPMA software that can calculate zero-time intercept by extrapolating X-ray count changes over analysis time. We evaluated an accuracy of TDI correction for Na measurements of silicate glasses with EPMA at 15 kV acceleration voltage and 20 nA probe current electron beam, which is commonly utilized analytical condition for geological samples. Results show that Na loss can be avoided with 20 ㎛-sized large beam (<0.1 nA/㎛2), thus silicate glasses can be analyzed without TDI correction. When the beam size is smaller than 10 ㎛, Na loss results in large relative errors up to -55% of Na2O values without correction. By applying TDI corrections, we can acquire Na2O values close to the reference values with relative errors of ~ ±10%. Use of weighted linear-fit can reduce relative errors down to ±6%. Thus, quantitative analysis of silicate glasses with EPMA is required for TDI correction for alkali elements such as Na and K.
A series of waterbome poly(urethane-urea) anionomers were prepared from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polycaprolactone diol (PCL), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), ethylene diamine (EDA), and triethylamine (TEA), NaOH, or Cu($(COOCH_3)_2$) as neutralizing agent. This study was performed to decide the effect of neutralizing agent type on the particle size viscosity, hydrogen bonding index, adhesive strength, antistaticity, antibacterial and mechanical properties. The particle size of the dispersions decreased in the following order: TEA based samples (T-sample), NaOH based samples (N-sample), and Cu($(COOCH_3)_2$) based sample (C-sample). The viscosity of the dispersions increased in the order of C-sample, N-sample, and T-sample. Metal salt based film samples Of and C-sample) had much higher antistaticity than TEA based sample. By infrared spectroscopy, it was found that the hydrogen bonding index (or fraction) of samples decreased in the order of T-sam-pie, N-sample, and C-sample. The adhesive strength and tensile modulus/strength decreased in the order of T-sample, N-sam-pie, and C-sample. The C-sample had strong antibacterial halo, however, T- and N-samples did not
Precipitation samples were collected by the wet-only event sampling method at Seoul from September 1991 to April 1995. Concentrations of samples for the ion components($NO_3^-, NO_2^-, SO_4^{2-}, Cl^-, F^-, Na^+, K^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+}$ and $NH_4^+$) were measured in addition to pH and electric conductivity. During the sampling period, 182 samples were collected, but only 163 samples were identified as valid. The pH, calculated from the volume-weighted $H^+$ concentration, was found to be 4.7, indicating a relatively intensive acidity compared with data from other regions of the world, where acid deposition was known to be a problem. Above all, the concentration of non-seasalt sulfate was $84 \mu eq/L$, which was the highest compared to that measured in other regions of the world. The major acidifying ions in the precipitation at Seoul were identified as sulfate and nitrate except for chloride, because the Cl/Na ratio in the precipitation was close to the ratio in seawater. If all of the non-seasalt sulfate and nitrate existed in the form of sulfuric and nitric acids, respectively, the average pH in the precipitation was calculated as 3.7, lower than the measured value. Consequently, the difference between the calculated and measured pH suggest that the acidity of precipitation was neutralized by alkaline species, not due to the low contribution of an anthropogenic air pollutants to the precipitation. The equivalent concentration ratio of sulfate to nitrate was 3.5, which indicated that the contributions of sulfuric and nitric acids to the precipitation acidity were 78% and 22%, respectively.

Objectives: Based on the results from the Korean Total Diet Study (KTDS), the sodium (Na) and potassium (K) intake of Koreans were estimated and compared with intake estimates from the Food & Nutrient Database (FNDB), as in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) to verify the validity of these estimates. Methods: One hundred and thirty-four representative foods (RFs) covering 92.5% of the total food intake of Koreans were selected, and 228 pairs of corresponding 'RF x representative cooking method' were derived by reflecting the methods used mainly in terms of frequency and quantity in their cooking. RF samples were collected from three cities with a larger population size in three regions (nine cities) nationwide, and six composite samples were made for each RF, considering its regional and/or seasonal characteristics. One thousand three hundred and sixty-eight 'RF x representative cooking method' pair samples were prepared, and the Na and K contents were assessed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Na and K intake of the Korean population was estimated by linking the content with the food intake data from the 7th KNHANES. Results: The mean Na and K intake of Koreans were 2,807.4 mg and 2,335.0 mg per person per day, respectively. A comparison with the Na and K intake from KNHANES, including only RFs of KTDS, showed comparable results with less than 5% variation. While the contribution and ranking of food items to Na intake were similar between KNHANES and KTDS, there were differences in K intake. This was attributed to the large discrepancies in the K content of rice and coffee between KTDS results and the values in the 9th Revision of the National Food Composition Table used in KNHANES. Conclusions: The Na and K intake of Koreans estimated based on the KTDS, which performed nutrient analysis on samples prepared to a 'table-ready' state using foods of the representative collection, was similar and comparable with that of KNHANES. This supports the validity and usefulness of FNDB-based nutrient intake estimation at the population level. The list of nutrients studied in KTDS is expected to be expanded, allowing for intake estimation of nutrients with currently insufficient or absent information in the FNDBs in use.

Boron-Carbon-Nitrogen (B-C-N) system is an attractive ternary material since it has not only an extremely high hardness but also a number of other prominent characteristics such as chemical inertness, elevated melting point, and low thermal expansion. In this paper, the corrosion behavior of B-C-N thin films in aqueous solution was investigated B-C-N films with different composition were deposited on a platinum plate by magnetron sputtering in the thickness range of 150-280 nm. In order to understand effect of pH of solutions, $BC_{2.\;4}N$ samples were immerged in 1M HCl, 1M NaCl, and 1M NaOH solution at 298k, respectively. BCN samples with different carbon contents were exposed to 1M NaOH solutions to investigate effect of chemical composition on corrosion resistance. Corrosion rates of samples were measured by ellipsometry, From results, optical constant of $BC_{2,\;4}N$ films was found to be $N_2=2.110-0.295i$. The corrosion rates of $Bi_{1.\;0}C_{2.\;4}N_{1.\;0}$ films were NaOH>NaCl>HCl in orders. With increasing carbon content in B-C-N films, the corrosion resistance of B-C-N films was enhanced. The lowest corrosion rate was obtained for $B_{1.\;0}C_{4.\;4}N_{1.\;9}$ film.
