Aqueous extract of Enicostemma littorale is reported to have antidiabetic activity. In the present investigation, we studied the effect of aqueous extract of E. littorale and its different fractions i.e., toluene, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol fractions and remaining residual fraction in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced neonatal type 2 diabetic rats. Fasting glucose and insulin levels in NIDDM were significantly (P<0.05) higher than control rats and they were significantly decreased by treatment with aqueous extract of E. littorale and its n-butanol and ethyl acetate fractions. Results of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed that aqueous extract and its n-butanol and ethyl acetate fractions significantly (P<0.05) decrease both $AUC_{glucose}$ and $AUC_{insulin}$ values in NIDDM treated groups. Insulin sensitivity $(K_{ITT})$ index of NIDDM control was significantly lower as compared to normal control and this was significantly (P<0.05) increased after treatment with aqueous extract, its n-butanol and ethyl acetate fractions. Treatment with aqueous extract of E. littorale and its n-butanol and ethyl acetate fractions lowered the elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels observed in NIDDM rats. Treatment with aqueous extract of E. littorale and its n-butanol fraction showed significant decrease in creatinine, urea, SGPT and SGOT levels as compared to NIDDM control rats. However ethyl acetate fraction showed significant changes only in creatinine and SGOT levels, and not in the levels of urea, and SGPT as compared to NIDDM control rats. Treatment with toluene, chloroform and residual fractions of E. littorale did not produce any effect on glucose, insulin, triglyceride, cholesterol, creatinine, urea, SGPT or SGOT levels as compared to NIDDM control rats. Our data suggest that n-butanol and ethyl acetate fractions contain the active compounds which may be responsible for the above activity and associated complications in NIDDM diabetes mellitus.

Chaenomeles sinensis (Thouin) Koehne fruit (Rosaceae) has been used as a traditional medicine in Korea, Japan and China to treat sore throat, diarrhea and inflammation. The ethanol extract of C. sinensis fruit was successively partitioned as methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and $H_2O$ soluble fractions. Among those fractions, the n-butanol fraction showed the most potent DPPH radical scavenging and superoxide quenching activities. To verify antioxidant activities, the n-butanol fraction was checked the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, and intracellular ROS levels and oxidative stress tolerance in Caenorhabditis elegans. Furthermore, to see if increased stress tolerance of worms by treating of the n-butanol fraction was due to regulation of stress-response gene, we quantified SOD-3 expression using transgenic strain. Consequently, the n-butanol fraction elevated SOD and catalase activities of C. elegans, and reduced intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the n-butanol fraction-treated CF1553 worms exhibited significantly higher SOD-3::GFP intensity.
The values of the AIT (autoignition temperature) for fire and explosion protection are normally the lowest reported. The MAITB (Minimum Autoignition Temperature Behavior) of flammable liquid mixture is exhibited when the AITs of mixture is below the AIT of the individual components. The MAITB is an interesting experimental features, which can be significant from the perspective of industrial fire safety. In this study, the AITs of toluene + iso-propanol(IPA) and p-xylene + n-butanol systems were measured using ASTM E659-78 apparatus. The AITs of toluene, iso-propanol (IPA), pxylene and n-butanol which constituted two binary systems were $547^{\circ}C,\;463^{\circ}C,\;557^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ respectively. The toluene + iso-propanol(IPA) system is exhibited MAITB at 0.3 mole fraction of toluene, and its minimum autoignition temperature was $460^{\circ}C$.

This study was carried out to develop ferns as the natural antioxidant materials by graduating and extracting fronds of $Dryopteris$$crassirhizoma$, $Dryopteris$$nipponensis$, and $Polystichum$$lepidocaulon$, which belong to Dryopteridaceae, using solvent, and analyzing the antioxidant effect of each fraction. The n-butanol fraction of $D.$$crassirhizoma$ (550.0 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$), the ethyl acetate fraction of $D.$$nipponensis$ (374.8 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$), and the n-butanol fraction of $P.$$lepidocaulon$ (781.8 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$) showed relatively higher total contents of polyphenol. The chloroform fraction of $D.$$crassirhizoma$ (72.9 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$), and the n-hexane fraction of $D.$$nipponensis$ (72.9 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and $P.$$lepidocaulon$ (154.5 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$) contained relatively higher total contents of flavonoids. DPPH radical scavenging activity was most excellent in the n-butanol fraction of $D.$$crassirhizoma$ ($RC_{50}=0.02mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$) and $P.$$lepidocaulon$ ($RC_{50}=0.04mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), and the water fractions of $D.$$nipponensis$ ($RC_{50}=0.01mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). ABTS radical scavenging activity was potent in the n-hexane and n-butanol fractions of $D.$$crassirhizoma$ (each $RC_{50}=0.02mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), the ethyl acetate fraction of $D.$$nipponensis$ ($RC_{50}=0.03mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), and the n-butanol fraction of $P.$$lepidocaulon$ ($RC_{50}=0.06mg{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). There was the large amount of total polyphenol content in the n-butanol fraction of $D.$$crassirhizoma$ and $P.$$lepidocaulon$, and their radical scavenging activities were potent. Therefore, it was thought that biologically active substances of each fraction layer are required to be analyzed and used.
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is known to have the characteristics of destructed periodontal tissue. Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of mulberry leaves in periodontal tissue is not well known until now. We investigated the effects of n-butanol extract of mulberry leaves on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced proinflammatory cytokines, such as $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, IL-8 and modulates osteogenic differentiation in periodontal ligament cells. The expression levels of Runx2, ALP and mRNA were increased by n-butanol extract of mulberry leaves at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/ml$ in periodontal ligament cells. n-Butanol extract of mulberry leaves extract reduced the range of pathophysiological processes, such as inflammation and increase in the level of osteogenic-related genes. These findings suggest that n-butanol extract of mulberry leaves has therapeutic effects on periodontitis and periodontal tissue regeneartion.

Butanol can be manufactured by chemical synthesis or by bacterial fermentation of carbohydrate-containing materials. Today the principal commercial source of n-butanol is n-butyraldehyde, obtained from the Oxo reaction of propylene. When crude oil price was sky-rocketed in late 70's and subsequently the price of petrochemical products raised, butanol production from renewable resources such as agricultural and forestry products once gained research interests.

The object of this study was to measure the bioactivity and antioxidant activity of seed from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis fructus (GJE). GJE seeds were performed the extraction of them by chloroform:methanol (CM, 2:1, v/v), 70% ethanol and n-butanol. Sequentially, total phenol content, nitrogen oxide scavenging activity, antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity of the extracts were investigated. Solvent extract bioactivity of increasing concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mg/mL) were significantly increased (p<0.05). GJE seed extracts showed lower activity than positive control (ascorbic acid, BHA, trolox). The highest concentration of CM extracts was obtained in the same manner as the results of analysis of the total phenol contents of the GJE seed, and 70% ethanol extract showed the highest activity of reducing power. The water soluble carotenoids crocin and flavonoid were effective. As a result of this experiment. the seeds of GJE showed excellent antioxidant, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory properties.
Haw(Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge) belongs to the rose family and has beneficial health effects such as anti-obesity and gastroprotective activities. This study compared the antioxidative activities of various solvent extracts from haw. After removing seeds, pulpy was extracted with 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, chloroform :methanol(CM, 2:1, v/v), n-butanol, and ethyl acetate(EA). Total phenol contents were 71.46, 70.41, 47.63, 47.49 and 45.95 mg/g in the 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, CM, n-butanol and EA extracts, respectively. Total flavonoid contents of CM and n-butanol extracts were higher compared to other extracts at 1.63 mg/g and 1.59 mg/g, respectively, whereas EA extract had the lowest flavonoid content at 1.12 mg/g. Corresponding to total phenol contents, among $NO_2$ radical scavenging activity, antioxidant activity by ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay, and superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like ability, 70% methanol and 70% ethanol extracts showed higher antioxidative activities than the other extracts. However, the lowest activities were n-butanol extract in $NO_2$ radical scavenging activity as well as EA extract in antioxidant activity by ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay and SOD-like ability. These results suggest that haw extracts are available as a new natural antioxidant, and its activities are attributed to antioxidant substances such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids.
The flash points and the fire points for the m-xylene+n-propionic acid and n-butanol+n-pentanol systems were measured by using Tag open-cup apparatus(AS1M D 1310-86). The experimental flash points of two binary systems were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law, Van Laar equation and Wilson equation. The calculated values based on the Raoult's law on m-xylene+n-propionic acid system were found to be better than those based on Van Laar and Wilson equations. The calculated values based on Van Laar equation on n-butanol+n-pentanol system were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law and Wilson equation. The the fire points for the m-xylene+n-propionic acid system were about $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ above the flash points. In the case of n-butanol+n-pentanol system, the flash points and the fire points had been found to be identical.
Saururus chinensis Baill has been used in Korean folk medicine for the treatment of various diseases such as edema, Jaundice, and furuncle. The components of this plant were extracted into four fraction. Among the four fraction, hexane and ethyl acetate fraction were highly toxic to 3T3 mouse embryo fibroblast and Raw 264.7 mouse macrophage, but n-butanol and residue fraction did not show any toxic effect to those cell lines. n-Butanol and residue fraction exhibited antioxidant effects on hydro-gen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide anion directly in vitro and in the 3T3 fibroblasts. All the four fractions inhibited lipid peroxidation measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) formation. In addition, n-butanol and residue fraction showed inhibitory effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide production, and also down-regulated inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA transcription 6 h after LPS stimulation in Raw 204.7 cells. Only n-butanol fraction, which mainly consists of flavonoids, inhibited NF-kB activation by decreasing IkBa degradation 90 min after LPS stimulation. horn the results, it is suggested that this plant could be a good candidate material for drug development based on its antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory constituents.
