Inertia welding is a solid-state welding process in which butt welds in materials are made in bar and in ring form at the joint face, and energy required for welding is obtained from a rotating flywheel. The stored energy is converted to frictional heat at the interface under axial load. The quality of the welded joint depends on many parameters, including axial force, initial revolution speed and energy, amount of upset, working time, and residual stresses in the joint. Inertia welding was conducted to make the large rotor shaft for low speed marine diesel engine, alloy steel for shaft of 140mm. Due to different material characteristics, such as, thermal conductivity and flow stress, on the two sides of the weld interface, modeling is crucial in determining the optimal weld geometry and parameters. FE simulation was performed by the commercial code DEFORM-2D. A good agreement between the predicted and actual welded shape is observed. It is expected that modeling will significantly reduce the number of experimental trials needed to determine the weld parameters.

As a result of vehicle maintenance of rocker arm shaft for 4-cylinder SOHC engine, failure stress analysis of rocker arm shaft is needed. Because more than 30% of vehicles investigated have been fractured. Failure stress analysis is classified into an naked eyes, microscope, striation and X-ray fractography etc. Failure stress analysis by using striation is already established technology as means for seeking cause of fracture. But, although it is well known that striation spacing corresponds to the crack growth rate da/dN, it is not possible to determine ${\sigma}_{max}\;and\;{\sigma}_{min}$ under service loading only from striation spacing. This is because the value of striation spacing is influenced not only by ${\Delta}K$ but also by the stress ratio R. In the present paper, we determine the stress ratio using orthogonal array and ANOVA, and propose a prediction method of failure stress which is combined with FEM and striation.

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (${\alpha}$-Si:H) layers deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) are investigated for use in silicon hetero-junction solar cells employing n-type crystalline silicon (c-Si) substrates. The optical and structural properties of silicon hetero-junction devices have been characterized using spectroscopy ellipsometry and high resolution cross-sectional transmission electron micrograph (HRTEM). In addition, the effective carrier lifetime is measured by the quasi-steady-state photocoductance (QSSPC) method. We have studied on the correlation between the order of ${\alpha}$-Si:H and the passivation quality at the interface of ${\alpha}$-Si:H/c-Si. Base on the result, we have fabricated a silicon hetero-junction solar cell incorporating the ${\alpha}$-Si:H passivation layer with on open circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$) of 637 mV.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the validity of the Pediatric Index of Mortality Ⅱ(PIM Ⅱ). Method: The first values on PIM Ⅱ variables following ICU admission were collected from the patient's charts of 548 admissions retrospectively in three ICUs(medical, surgical, and neurosurgical) at P University Hospital and a cardiac ICU at D University Hospital in Busan from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2003. Data was analyzed with the SPSSWIN 10.0 program for the descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient, standardized mortality ratio(SMR), validity index(sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value), and AUC of ROC curve. Result: The mortality rate was 10.9% (60 cases) and the predicted death rate was 9.5%. The correlation coefficient(r) between observed and expected death rates was .929(p<.01) and SMR was 1.15. Se, Sp, pPv, nPv, and the correct classification rate were .80, .96, .70, .98, and 94.0% respectively. In addition, areas under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) was 0.954 (95% CI=0.919~0.989). According to demographic characteristics, mortality was underestimated in the medical group and overestimated in the surgical group. In addition, the AUCs of ROC curve were generally high in all subgroups. Conclusion: The PIM Ⅱ showed a good, so it can be utilized for the subject hospital. better.

A solvent extraction separation, preconcentration and determination of thorium with a new crown, 2-ethyl-N-benzyl-4,7,10,13,16-pentaoxa-1-azacyclooctadecane (MACE), is described in the study. The amount of thorium in the aqueous phase and organic phase was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy and Ultraviolet-Visible, respectively. Thorium loaded organic phase was quantitatively stripped in a stage by using 1.0 M $HNO_3$. Thorium was effectively extracted with MACE in the pH range of 6-7 to produce a 3:2 complex ratio in the chloroform. A highly sensitive and rapid spectrophotometric method was described for determination of trace amounts of thorium with MACE. The effective molar absorption coefficient at 281 nm is $1.98{\times}10^3\;mol^{-1}cm^{-1}$, and the system complies with Beer's law in the range from 0.464 to 2.32 ${\mu}gm\;L^{-1}$ of thorium. Thorium was also determined in standard and environmental samples.
A simple and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous identification of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin in chicken muscle. Norflorxacin imprinted polymers synthesized in water-containing systems show high selectivity to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in an aqueous environment. Using these water-compatible imprinted polymers as selective adsorbents in the solid-phase extraction of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from chicken samples, the remaining biological matrix could be quickly washed out from the imprinted column while enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were selectively retained and enriched. Analytical separation was performed on a $C_{18}$ column using acetonitrile-water as a mobile phase and fluorescence detection. Good linearity was obtained from 0.8 to 500 ng/g (r > 0.998) with relative standard deviation of less than 3.9%. The mean recoveries of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from chicken muscle were 80.6-94.5% and 77.8-91.8% at three different concentrations. The limits of determinations based on S/N=3 were 0.07 ng/g and 0.09 ng/g, which are below the maximum residue limits established in many countries.
A new planar-type microsensor, which had a platinum heater and a sensing layer on the same plane was fabricated on silicon substrate with stress-relieved PSG(phosphosilicate glass)/$Si_{3}N_{4}$(800nm/150nm) diaphragm. The proposed planar-type microsensor could be fabricated by simple silicon process using only 3 masks for photolithography process compared with 5 or 6 masks of the typical micro-gas sensor. The thermal properties of the microsensor from thermal simulation were compared with those of the fabricated microheater. Although there are some discrepancy between the simulation result and the result from the fabricated microheater, the thermal simulation by FEM was proved to be an useful method to evaluate the thermal properties of microheater. The sensing characteristics of the fabricated microsensor with the planar-type heater were investigated also.

Single crystals of InSe were obtained by the Bridgman method. The crystal structure was hombohedral(R3m) with lattice paramete. a=4.02A, c=24.96A. At 300$^{\circ}$K the electrical conductivity was about ~10-2($\Omega$.cm)-1, reslpectively. The electrical conductivity type was n- type. The donor level located at 0.072eV below the conduction band. The Photosensitivity was observed in range from 840nm to 1120nm. The energy gap of InSe single crystal measured from the photoconductivity and the optical transmittance spectrum was 1.20eV, 1.21eV, respectively.
We are developing empirical space weather (solar flare, solar proton event, and geomagnetic storm) forecast models based on solar data. In this talk we will review our main results and recent progress. First, we have examined solar flare (R) occurrence probability depending on sunspot McIntosh classification, its area, and its area change. We find that sunspot area and its increase (a proxy of flux emergence) greatly enhance solar flare occurrence rates for several sunspot classes. Second, a solar proton event (S) forecast model depending on flare parameters (flare strength, duration, and longitude) as well as CME parameters (speed and angular width) has been developed. We find that solar proton event probability strongly depends on these parameters and CME speed is well correlated with solar proton flux for disk events. Third, we have developed an empirical storm (G) forecast model to predict probability and strength of a storm using halo CME - Dst storm data. For this we use storm probability maps depending on CME parameters such as speed, location, and earthward direction. We are also looking for geoeffective CME parameters such as cone model parameters and magnetic field orientation. We find that all superstorms (less than -200 nT) occurred in the western hemisphere with southward field orientations. We have a plan to set up a storm forecast method with a three-stage approach, which will make a prediction within four hours after the solar coronagraph data become available. We expect that this study will enable us to forecast the onset and strength of a geomagnetic storm a few days in advance using only CME parameters and the WSA-ENLIL model. Finally, we discuss several ongoing works for space weather applications.
Dioxin-like compounds are ubiquitous environmental polltants that could be accumulated in biological system and toxic to human and wildlife. Given this issue, it is important to develop a reliable dioxin detection methods for a rational risk assesment of dioxin-like compounds. In this study, we tried to set up and validate a sensitive, reliable risk assessment of dioxin-like compounds. In this study, we tried to set up and validate a sensitive, reliable and rapid bioassay model, CALUX bioassay as a screening tool for routine measurement of dioxin-like conpounds in environmental matrices. For the valisation of CALUX bioassay, firstly, we performed dose-response assay for 2,3,7,8-TCDD, most potent dioxin-like compound, using two different methods CALUX and EROD assay. Induction of luciferase activity and CYPIA catalyzed EROD activity were dose-dependently induced by 2,3,7,8-TCDD, with initial induction at 0.1 pM and maximal induction at 1 nM. In order t determine whether the CALUX bioassay could predict the effects of dioxin-like compounds, 2,3,7,8-TCDD dose-response from CALUX was compared with that from EROD assay. The correlation coefficient ($r^2$) was found to be 0.89, indicating a good correlation between two different methods and the possibility of CALUX bioassay as a useful dioxin detecting method.
