  • We present a method, supported by theoretical analysis, for optimizing the usage of the critical rare earth element dysprosium in $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ (NdFeB)-based permanent magnets. In this method, we use Dy selectively in locations such as magnet edges and faces, where demagnetization factors are largest, rather than uniformly throughout the bulk sample. A200 nm thick Dy film was sputtered onto a commercial N-38, NdFeB magnets with a thickness of 3 mm and post-annealed at temperatures from $600-700^{\circ}C$. Magnets displayed enhanced coercivities after post-annealing and as much as a 5 % increase in the energy product, while requiring a total Dy content of 0.06 wt. % - a small fraction of that used in the commercial grade Dy-NdFeB magnets. By assuming all Dy diffused into NdFeB magnets, the improvement in energy product corresponds to a saving of over 1% Dy (critical element). Magnets manufactured using this technique will therefore be higher performing which would potentially broaden the application space of these magnets in the traction motors of hybrid and pure electric vehicles, and wind generators.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between aiming patterns and scores in archery shooting. Method: Four (N = 4) elementary-level archers from middle school participated in this study. Aiming pattern was defined by averaged acceleration data measured from accelerometers attached on the body during the aiming phase in archery shooting. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to test whether a model incorporating aiming patterns from all nine accelerometers could predict the scores. In order to extract period of interest (POI) data from raw data, a Dynamic Time Warping (DTW)-based extraction method was presented. Results: Regression models for all four subjects are conducted with different significance levels and variables. The significance levels of the regression models are 0.12%, 1.61%, 0.55%, and 0.4% respectively; the $R^2$ of the regression models is 64.04%, 27.93%, 72.02%, and 45.62% respectively; and the maximum significance levels of parameters in the regression models are 1.26%, 4.58%, 5.1%, and 4.98% respectively. Conclusion: Our results indicated that the relationship between aiming patterns and scores was described by a regression model. Analysis of the significance levels, variables, and parameters of the regression model showed that our approach - regression analysis with DTW - is an effective way to raise scores in archery shooting.

  • 25-Acetoxy-26,27,28-trimethoxycalix[4]arene was synthesized by the treatment of calix[4]arene trimethyl ether with acetyl chloride in the presence of NaH. The solution conformation was inferred as a partial cone conformation based on the $^1H$-and $^{13}C$ NMR spectra. The crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. The crystals are monoclinic, space group $P2_1$/n, a=8.186 (1), b=17.137 (2), c=19.878 (3) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}$=95.67 (1)$^{\circ}$, Z=4, V=2774.90 ${\AA}^3$, $D_c$= 1.22 g $cm^{-3}$, $D_m$=1.23 g $cm^{-3}$. The intensity data were collected on an Enraf-Noninus CAD-4 Diffractometer with a graphite monochromated $Cu-K{\alpha}$ radiation. The structure was solved by direct method and refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to a final R value of 0.054 for 3675 observed reflections. The molecule possesses a partial cone conformation with one flattened phenyl unit, in which one anisol ring, distal to the ester ring, is inverted. The acetoxyphenyl ring is flattened.

  • This paper is concerned with steel-concrete composite plate girders curved in plan. At the design stage these girders are assumed sometimes to act independent of the deck slabs resting on them in order to simplify the analysis. The advantage of composite action between the steel girders and concrete deck is not utilized. Finite element modeling of such composite action in plate girders is considered in this paper. Details of the finite element modeling and the non-linear analysis of the girders are presented along with the results obtained. Tension field action in the web panels similar to those observed in the straight plate girders is also noticed in these girders. Finite element and experimental results in respect of curved steel plate girders and straight composite plate girders tested by other researchers are presented first to assess the accuracy of the modeling. Effects of parameters such as curvature, steel flange width and web panel width that affect the behavior of composite girders are then considered in the analyses. An approximate method to predict the ultimate strength of horizontally curved composite plate girders is also presented.

  • As demands for the maritime communications increase, a variety of functions and information are required to exchange via elements of maritime systems, which leads communication traffic increases in maritime frequency bands, especially in VHF (Very High Frequency) band. Thus, effective resource management is crucial to the future maritime communication systems not only to the typical terrestrial communication systems. VHF data exchange system (VDES) enables to utilize more flexible configuration according to the communication condition. This paper focuses on the VDES communication system among VDES terminals such as shore stations, ship stations and aids to navigation (AtoN) to address efficient resource allocation. We propose a resource management method considering a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technique in VDES, which has been widely used for modern terrestrial wireless networks but not for marine environments by scheduling the essential communication resources. We introduce the general channel model in marine environment and give two metrics, spectral and the energy efficiencies to examine our resource scheduling algorithm. Based on the simulation results and analysis, the proposed method provides a possibility to enhance spectral and energy efficiencies. Additionally, we present a trade-off relationship between spectral and energy efficiencies. Furthermore, we examine the resource efficiencies related to the imperfect channel estimation.

  • In this study, a convenient, fast and accurate inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method has been optimized for the determination of osmium in aqueous solutions. The method makes use of the reaction of sulfurous acid with osmium to quantitative conversion of volatile Os(VIII) to non-volatile Os(IV) in the pH range 2-10. The response was found to be stabilized immediately after sulfurous acid reacted with osmium. The precision was calculated to be 0.5-4.5 % (RSD) under various ICP-AES conditions. The detection limit was 2.5-57.7 ng/g based on $3{\sigma}$ of the blank response (n=3) using a concentric flow nebulization.

  • This study investigates the behaviour of hunchback retaining walls supporting unsaturated sandy backfill under active earth pressure conditions. Utilizing a horizontal slice method and a unified effective stress methodology, the influence of various factors on lateral earth pressure, including the position of the hunch along the wall, friction angles, and wall heights, is explored. The results suggest that relocating the hunch position from close to the wall's top to near its base leads to a significant decrease (ranging from 54% to 81%) in lateral earth pressure. However, as the hunch position transitions from near the top to mid-height, the point of application of active thrust shifts upward initially, then slightly downward as the hunch position approaches the toe. Notably, the reduction in lateral earth pressure is more pronounced for shorter wall heights and higher friction angles. Building upon these findings, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based model is developed to accurately predict the lateral earth pressure coefficient and point of application, achieving R2 values of 0.94 and 0.93, respectively. In addition, an analytical model based on Coulomb's earth pressure theory is presented and compared with ANN models. These models are anticipated to assist designers and practitioners in optimizing hunchback retaining walls for unsaturated backfill.

  • Sertraline HCl, (1S-cis)-4-(3, 4-dichloro-phenyl)-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-N-methyl-l-naphthalenamine hydrochloride, is a potent and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor which is used in the treatment of depression and obsessivecompulsive disorders. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bioequivalence of two sertraline HCl tablets, Traline tablet (Myungin Pharm. Co. Ltd.) and Zoloft$^{(R)}$ tablet (Pfizer Inc.), according to the guidelines of the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). The in vitro release of sertraline from the two sertraline HCl formulations was tested using KP VIII Apparatus II method with various dissolution media. Twenty four healthy Korean male volunteers, $23.50{\pm}1.74$ years in age and $64.09{\pm}7.10\;kg$ in body weight, were divided into two groups and a randomized $2{\times}2$ crossover study was employed. After a single tablet containing 50 mg as sertraline HCl was orally administered, blood samples were taken at predetermined time intervals and the concentrations of sertraline in serum were determined using an online columnswitching HPLC method with UV/Vis detection. The dissolution profiles of two formulations were similar in all tested dissolution media. The pharmacokinetic parameters such as $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ were calculated, and computer programs (Equiv Test and K-BE Test) were utilized for the statistical analysis of the parameters using logarithmically transformed $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and un-transformed $T_{max}$. The results showed that the differences between two formulations based on the reference drug, Zoloft$^{(R)}$ tablet, were 0.04, 3.26 and -1.29% for $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$, and $T_{max}$, respectively. There were no sequence effects between two formulations in these parameters. The 90% confidence intervals using logarithmically transformed data were within the acceptance range of log0.8 to log1.25. Thus, the criteria of the KFDA bioequivalence guideline were satisfied, indicating Traline tablet was bioequivalent to Zoloft$^{(R)}$ tablet.
