  • Acute and chronic toxicity of phenol on the mortality, long-term survival and respiration rates of the mysid, Archaeomysis kokuboi adult and juvenile were examined. This experiment was condurted by static bioassay procedure with the different salinity at $25^{\circ}C$ In lethal test, the test animals were exposed to 6 different phenol concentrations to determine $LC_{50}$ and I$LT_{50}$ (median lethal concentration and time) values. The $LC_{50}$ values with the exposure time for the mysid adult ranged from 31.31ppm to 1.49ppm phenol and for the mysid juvenile ranged from 6.90ppm to 0.26ppm in all experimental groups. Mortality was increased with the decrease of salinity, The $96hr-LC_{50}$ values at 16, 24 and $32\%o$ salinity for the mysid adult were 1.49, 2.71 and 4.53ppm phenol, white the values for the mysid juvenile were 0.26, 0.56 and 0.71ppm, respectively. The ratios of $96hr-LC_{50}$ values for the mysid adult to those for the mysid juvenile at 16, 24 and $32\%p$ salinity were 5.73, 4.84 and 6.38, respectively. The mysid juveniles were more sensitive to phenol than the mysid adults. Compared $LT_{50}$ values for the mysid adult with those for the mysid juvenile, the $LT_{50}$ values for the mysid adult ranged from 384.7 to 29.0 hours at 1.7-127ppm phenol concentrations and for the mysid juvenile ranged from 132.2 to 18.7 hours at 0.5~6.Oppm phenol concentrations. The lowest $LT_{50}$ values for the mysid adult and juvenile were showed at the combination of the highest experimental concentration of phenol and the lowest experimental salinity. The mysid juveniles showed lower $LT_{50}$ values than those of adults. The chronic effects of phenol on the mysid at the sublethal effective concentration of phenol were lower in the $32\%o$ salinitr group than 16 or $24\%o$ salinity groups. Oxygen consumption rates of the mysid adult were decreased with the increase of phenol concentration and exposure time, and decreased significantly in lower salinity at the same concentration or phenol.

  • Tests for the toxicity of tributyltin (TBT) were conducted on mysid collected from Dadepo beach, Pusan, Korea. The toxic effects of tributyltin on the survival, growth and oxygen consumption of the mysid, Neomysis awatschensis have been evaluated. Mysids were exposed to several concentrations of TBT (0, 0.56, 1.15, 3.07 and 6.12 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) for 6 weeks. Survival rate was decreased with increases in concentration and exposure time and the reduction of more than 40% occurred at TBT concentration greater than 1.15 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L after 6 weeks. Growth rate was significantly decreased at concentrations greater than 1.15 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. Oxygen consumption rate was also decreased in a concentration-dependent way and significantly decreased to 39,47 and 69% of the control at 1.15, 3.07 and 6.12 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L, respectively. These results indicate that the contamination of aquatic environment by TBT has the potential to significantly reduce coastal and estuaries recruitment of mysids.

  • In order to estimate toxicity of copper, radmium and chromium on survival, growth and oxygen consumption of the estuarine mysid, Neomysis awatschensis, adult and juvenile, the experiments were conducted by renewal bioassay method at $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;and\;20{\pm}1\%_{\circ}$ salinity. The $96hr-LC_{50}$ of the mysid exposed to cadmium, copper and chromium was 20.2, 11.3 and $670.4\;{\mu}g/\ell$ in adut and 3.4, 1.9 and $49.4\;{\mu}g/\ell$ in juvenile, respectively, and were ranked in order of toxicity : copper >cadmium >chromium. Survival rates of the mysid exposed to the sublethal concentrations of heavy metals for 40 days were significantly affected by cadmium $\geq1.0\;{\mu}g/\ell$ and copper $\geq0.6\;{\mu}g/\ell$ concentrations. The growth rate of the mysid exposed to $cadmium\geq2.0\;{\mu}g\ell$ and copper $\geq1.2\;{\mu}g/\ell$ concentrations were significantly reduced than that exposed to normal condition, but there was no affect on intermoult period. Oxygen consumption rate of the mysid exposed to heavy metals was significantly reduced with increasing heavy metals concentrations. The results of the present study led us to conclude that concentrations levels cadmium$\geq1.0\;{\mu}g\ell$ and copper $\geq0.6\;{\mu}g\ell$ of the estuarine could markedly affect the distribution and population of the mysid by reduced survival, growth and oxygen consumption rate.

  • Effects of salinity on survival, growth and oxygen consumption rates were examined in the mysid, Neomysis awatschensis. Mysids were exposed to various concentrations of salinity (0, 3.4, 6.7, 10.1, 13.4, 20.2, 27.4 and 33.6$\textperthousand$) for 40 days. Survival rate was significantly declined at below 6.7$\textperthousand$ after 40 days. Body length and daily growth rate of mysids exposed at below 6.7$\textperthousand$ salinity were significantly decreased than those of mysids exposed at above 10.1$\textperthousand$ salinity. Oxygen consumpiton rate of mysid exposed at salinity raining of 10.1~39.6$\textperthousand$ during 40 days not greatly changed in comparison with that before salinity treatment, but that of mysid exposed at below 6.7$\textperthousand$ significantly decreased. These results indicated that low salinity concentration ($\leq$6.7$\textperthousand$) reduced survival, growth and oxygen consumption rates of the mysid suggesting potential influence on the natural mortality of Neomysis awatschensis in the estuarine and coastal areas.

  • Effects of the combinations of six oxygen concentrations ($control, 0.6, 1.0, 2.0, 3.4 and 7.4 mg DO/l$) and two salinity levels ($20{\%_{\circ}} and 32{\%_{\circ}}$) on the rates of oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and mortality of the mysid, Neomysis awatschensis were tested at $20{\circ}C$. The lethal level ($96 hr-LC-(50)$) of dissolved oxygen for mysid at $20{\%_{\circ}} and 32{\%_{\circ}} were 2,20 mg DO/l and 1.60 mg DO/l$ respectively, and all mysids died within $24hr at 0.6 mg DO/l$. Oxygen consumption rate of mysid was increased with dissolved oxygen increase at $20{\%_{\circ}} and 32{\%_{\circ}}$, but ammonia excretion rate was high af $1.0 mg DO/l$ during 96h exposure to DO concentration, and significantly greater in $20{\%_{\circ}} than 32{\%_{\circ}}$. $O:N$ ratio of mysid exposed during 96hr with salinity anil dissolved oxygen was below $10 at 20{\%_{\circ}} and 1,0{\~}2.0 mg DO/l, and was 4.4 at 32{\%_{\circ}} and 1.0 mg DO/l$. These results indicated that mysids were capable of changing their energy substrate in response to salinity and DO changes, and obtaining energy from proteins.

  • A mysid species, Parastilomysis paradoxa Ii, 1936 belonging to the subfamily Mysinae Hansen, 1910 which comprises approximately 90% of all mysid species, is newly reported from Korean waters. The genus Parastilomysis Ii, 1936 which is also new to Korea, is distinctly different from other genera by having biramous third and fourth pleopods of the male, and telson with an apical cleft. In the present paper, authors provide detailed descriptions and illustrations of P. paradoxa based on the specimens collected from the southern coast of the Korean peninsula, and also discuss on the zoogeographical distribution herein. Parastilomysis paradoxa belongs to Mysidae Haworth, 1825, and is the 50th species in Korea.

  • The effects of temperatures, starvation, and kind of foods on growth, RNA/DNA ratio and protein contents during metamorphosis and early juvenile stage of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were examined. During metamorphosis, warm-acclimated fish showed higher RNA and DNA content than those of the cold-acclimated fish, excepting H stage (28 DAH) at which the ratio was higher at cold temperature. RNA/DNA ratio during metamorphosis showed similar values at two temperatures tested. However, after 42 DAH warm-acclimated juveniles had higher DNA content compared with cold-acclimated fish, resulted in marked decreases in RNA/DNA ratios. Higher RNA content at H stage of cold-acclimated fish was consistent with an increase in protein content. Growth of fish rearing at warm temperature was higher than those of fish at cold temperature during all experiments. In starvation experiment, contents of DNA, RNA and protein significantly decreased. Even though there were no significant differences in total length (TL) and body weight between the live mysid-fed and artificial pellet-fed fish at 35 mm TL, both RNA/DNA and protein/DNA ratios of the former group was significantly higher than those of the latter due primarily to lower DNA content of the live mysid-fed group. The results from this study suggest that temperature, starvation and kind of foods should be considered when RNA/DNA ratio applied to assessing the cultured larval and juvenile fish condition.
