  • The Imgye area, in the NE Taebaegsan Region, consists of Precambrian granites and schist complex at the base and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and amphibolite at cover. The granites in the area were previously thought to be Paleozoic in age, but recent geochronological data yields isotopic age ranging from $1837{\pm}82Ma$ to $2108{\pm}82Ma$ by Rb-Sr whole rock method. Therefore, basement-cover relations in the area should be reexamined. During the study, mylonite zone recognized along the contact boundary between Precambrian granites and Cambrian Jangsan Quartzite Formation. Mylonite zone has 150 - 250 m in width. Mylonitic rocks can divide into two groups; quartz mylonite derived from Jangsan Formation and mylonitic granites from Precambrian granites. Intensity of mylonitic foliation decreased toward the north. Amphibolite occurs as an intrusive sills within mylonite zone. Mineral fabrics and small scale shear zones are commonly seen in amphibolite. It indicates that intrusive age of amphibolite is synchronous to the formation of mylonite zone. Mylonite zone was reactivated as ductile thrust faults and forms the hinterland dipping imbricate zone during the Cretaceous Bulkuksa Orogeny. The near parallelism of mineral stretching lineation and long axis of strain ellipes indicates that the area is affected by a homogeneous pure shear flattening together with the variable components of simple shear.

  • The area to be studied is the place where the main line rail way will be constructed in accordance with the scheduled construction project of Yeongju dam, and is a fold and mylonite zone over several km that is formed by ductile-shearing effect. The ductile shear zone, which has been transformed by faulting for long geological time, shows a complicated geological structure. Due to the recrystallization of mineral caused by transformation in deep underground (>8km), a mylonite zone with lamellar structure has properties distinguished from other fault zones formed by transformation near earth surface <2km). To see the properties of mylonite, this study analyzed the transformation rate of sample rocks and the shape of constriction structure accompanied with transformation. While the transformation of fault zone shows a round oblate, the mylonite zone shows a prolate form. Transformation rate in fault zone was measured to be less than 1.2 compared to the state before transformation while the measured rate in mylonite zone was 2.5 at most. Setting the surface of discontinuity as the base, the unconfined compressive strength of slickenside can be categorized in sedimentary rocks, and a change of strength was observed after water soaking over certain time. Taking into account that the weathering resistance of the rock based on mineral and chemical organization is relatively higher, its engineering properties seems to result from the shattered crack structure by crushing effect. When undertaking tunnel construction in mylonite zone, there should be a special care for the expansion of shattered cracks or the fall of strength by influx of ground water.

  • Olivine, a major mineral in the upper mantle with strong intrinsic elastic anisotropy, plays a crucial role in seismic anisotropy in the mantle, primarily through its lattice preferred orientation (LPO). Despite this, the influence of the microstructure of mylonitic rocks on seismic anisotropy remains inadequately understood. Notably, there is a current research gap concerning seismic anisotropy directly inferred from mylonitic peridotite massifs in Korea. In this study, we introduce the deformation microstructure and LPO of olivine in the mantle shear zone. We calculate the characteristics of seismic anisotropy based on the degree of deformation (proto-mylonite, mylonite, ultra-mylonite) and establish correlations between these characteristics. Our findings reveal that the seismic anisotropy resulting from the olivine LPO in the ultra-mylonitic rock appears to be the weakest, whereas the seismic anisotropy resulting from the olivine LPO in the proto-mylonitic rock appears to be the strongest. The results demonstrate a gradual decrease in seismic anisotropy as the fabric strength (J-index) of olivine LPO diminishes, irrespective of the specific pattern of olivine's LPO. Moreover, all samples exhibit a polarization direction of the fast S-wave aligned subparallel to the lineation. This suggests that seismic anisotropy originating from olivine in mylonitic peridotites is primarily influenced by fabric strength rather than LPO type. Considering these distinctive characteristics of seismic anisotropy is expected to facilitate comparisons and interpretations of the internal mantle structure and seismic data in the Yugu area, Gyeonggi Massif.

  • The Mesozoic leucocratic granite in the northeastern margin of the Taebaeksan Basin was transformed to protomylonite and mylonite. Mylonitic foliations generally strike to NWWNW and dip to NE with the development of a sinistral strike-slip (top-to-the-northwest) shear sense. Grain-size reduction of feldspar in the mylonitized leucocratic granite occurred due to fracturing, myrmekite formation and neocrystallization of albitic plagioclase along the shear fractures of K-feldspar porphyroclasts. As the deformation proceeded, compositional layering consisting of feldspar-, quartz- and/or muscovite-rich layers developed in the mylonite. In the feldspar-rich layer, fine-grained albitic plagioclase and interstitial K-feldspar were deformed dominantly by granular flow. On the other hand, quartz-rich layers containing core-mantle and quartz ribbons structures were deformed by dislocation creep. Based on calculations from conventional two-feldspar and ternary feldspar geothermometers, mylonitization temperatures of the leucocratic granite range from 360 to $450^{\circ}C$. It thus indicates that the mylonitization has occurred under greenschist-facies conditions. Based on the geochemical features and previous chronological data, the leucocratic granite was emplaced during the Middle Jurassic at volcanic arc setting associated with crustal thickening. And then the mylonitization of the granite occurred during the late Middle to Late Jurassic (150-165 Ma). Therefore, the mylonitization of the Jurassic granitoids in the Taebaeksan Basin was closely related to the development of the Honam shear zone.

  • The Okdong Fault is situated in Okdong-Hamchang area, the central part of Korea. The area consists of Precambrian gneisses and granitoids, Paleozoic clastic and carbonate rocks, and Mesozoic clastic rocks and igneous intrusives. The Okdong Fault is situated along contact boundary between the lowermost Cambrian Basal Quartzite and Precambrian basements. Mylonites occur as narrow zone which is extended over 100km and is restricted to within 10m-30m along the Okdong Fault. The main features of mylonites are quartz mylonite derived from Cambrian Basal Quartzite and mylonitic granitoids from Precambrian granitoids. Movement sense is deduced as a sinistral strike-slip movement with evidence of rotation of sheared porphyroclasts, rotation of fragments and S/C-bands. The mylonite zone has been reactivated as fault which reveals oblique-slip movement. The fault resurges as faults which reveals normal(to the NW) and reverse(to the SE) dip-slip movement. Normal faults are dominant in the northern and southern part and reverse or thrust faults are dominant in the central part of the Okdong Fault. The thrust movement can be correlated with the Daebo Orogeny of Jurassic Period. Granites and dyke rocks intruded into Paleozoic and Precambrian rocks during Cretaceous Period.

  • Geochemical study was conducted to elucidate the origin of fluorine (F) distributed in the rocks within the four areas of Yongyudo and Sammokdo, Incheon, which have been used as the source area of land reclamation for the $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ stage construction sites of the Incheon International Airport. The main geology of the study area is Triassic biotite granite. Fluorine is contained at high levels in biotite granite, mylonite, and dykes (andesite and, basaltic-andesite). Furthermore, the higher concentrations of fluorine in the biotite granite can be contributed to fluorite. The results of microscopic analyses reveal that the fluorite was mostly observed as small vienlets together with quartz. This features support that fluorite was naturally formed due to the secondary process of hydrothermal fluids. In addition, fluorine was investigated to be highly enriched in a large amount of mica within the veins. In the case of mylonite, a high levels of fluorine was contributed to a large amount of sericite. The sericites contained in the mylointe, differently to those of the biotite granite, filled the micro-fractures of quartz formed as a result of mylonitization and included small cataclastic quartz grains. This indicates that fluorine was naturally enriched due to the alteration of hydrothermal fluids filling fractured zones formed by mylonitization. Consequently, the results of petrological and mineralogical study confirm that the fluorine distributed in the rocks within the Yongyudo and Sammokdo originated naturally.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the natural origin of fluorine contained in the rocks within the Eulwangsan area via petrological and mineralogical analyses. The main geology of the Yongyudo Eulwangsan area is Triassic biotite granite. Biotite granite and mylonite are the major rock types containing fluorine at high levels (up to 1,700 and 2,400 mg/kg for biotite granite and mylonite, respectively). In the case of the biotite granite, a high concentration of fluorine can be contributed to fluorite, and the results of microscopic analyses show that the fluorite was observed as small veinlets filling cleavages and micro-fractures within alkali-feldspars and plagioclases, or observed together with quartz in ore veins, indicating the secondary formation of fluorite by hydrothermal fluids. In mylonite, on the other hand, a high fluorine concentration is attributable to sericite. Microscopic analyses revealed that the boundary between sericite and surrounding quartz was not clear, the sericite occurred filling the micro-fractures of quartz and encapsulating small quartz cataclasts. These results indicate that the sericite was also formed as a result of hydrothermal alteration. Consequently, it is speculated that the high fluorine level in the rocks of the Eulwangsan area of Yongyudo is of natural origin due to hydrothermal processes.

  • Honam Shear Zone is a mylonite zone approximately parallel to the NE-SW trend located southern part of Korea peninsula. Geologic ages and petrogenesis of foliated granites in this zone are as follows: Igneous rocks of this zone are composed of granite gneiss, Paleozoic granites, Songrim granites, Jurassic granites and Cretaceous granites. Foliated granites show deformed phase of Paleozoic and Songrim granites during Daebo Orogeny. And isotopic ages obtained from foliated granites are early Permian to late Triassic period (276~200 Ma). Most of foliated granite masses are igneous complex consisting of a series of differential product of cogenetic magma. The individual rock mass of foliated granites plotted on Harker diagram shows mostly similar trend of calc-alkali series. REE diagram indicates that LREE amount of foliated granites are more enriched than HREE and negative Eu anomalies of them are weaker than those of the other granites. From these data, we suggest the rocks are generated from continental margin under syntectonic environment. Original magma type of foliated granites correspond to I-type, syn-collision type and Hercyano type. In compressive stress field between Ogcheon folded belt and Youngnam massif, foliated granites had formed due to mylonitic deformation. Those facts indicate that magma of foliated granites would had been generated by melting in lower crust or contamination in upper mantle.

  • The Imgye hornblendites occur as intrusive sills or dykes within the mylonite zone developed along the contact boundary between Precambrian Jungbongsan granite and Cambrian Jangsan quartzite or Myobong slate formations. The hornlendites belong to the subalkaline and tholeiitic series. In tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams such as $TiO_2-K_2O-P_2O_5$, 2Nb-Zr/4-Y and $TiO_2-10MnO-10P_2O_5$, the hornblendites are classified into continental- and island-arc tholeiites. The hornblendites show fractionated REE patterns with $(La/Yb)_{CN}$ ranging from 3.73-4.56. In incompatible element abundance variations, the hornblendites show distinctive positive and negative anomalies for Rb and Nb, respectively, and unfractionated patterns of immobile incompatible elements such as Y and Yb. The REE patterns of the hornblendites are also similar to those of typical continental back-arc tholeiites and those of the Precambrian Okbang amphibolites in the Socheon-meon, Bonghwa-gun. Accoiding to geochemical characteristics above-mentioned, the hornblendites seem to have been formed from tholeiitic magmas of depleted upper mantle source, contaminated by crustal material en route to continental back-arc basin.
