Objective: This study aimed to examine childcare teachers' perceptions and practice of music-math integrated activities, and their understanding of these activities. Methods: This study involved 201 childcare teachers from Seoul and surrounding areas. Surveys were employed to collect data on their background, implementation of music-math integrated activities, and the challenges they encountered. Additionally, a tool was also developed and utilized to measure the actual understanding of these activities. Data were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVA. Results: The results indicated that while teachers recognize the importance of integrated activities, they seldom implement them due to challenges related to resources and comprehension of concepts. Significant differences in the understanding of these activities were found based on teachers' experience, workplace type, age group of children under their care, and education level. Conclusion/Implications: In conclusion, the findings emphasize the necessity for the development and provision of pre-service and in-service training programs, along with support in educational materials for childcare teachers. These efforts are crucial to facilitate the effective implementation of music-math integrated activities.
The purpose of this study was to examine how primary school teachers use music for classroom teaching and management and how they perceive the effects of using music in their classroom. A total of 190 questionnaires were collected from primary school teachers and 119 responses were analyzed after excluding four responses from music teachers who are not in charge of a classroom. The results demonstrated that a greater number of respondents reported the use of music for classroom teaching than for classroom management. With regard to music use for classroom management, teachers most often attempted to enhance positive emotions of their students by playing children's songs. For classroom teaching, music was frequently used to increase students' motivation for learning. Also, while first through third grade teachers tended to use music frequently for both classroom teaching and management, fourth through sixth grade teachers mainly used music for teaching. Although most of the respondents perceived the positive influence of music on their children, they reported difficulties in using music in their classrooms. Respondents indicated the needs for music-related training or provision of materials to support teachers for effectively using music. Future studies are needed to develop music resource materials that could be readily utilized by teachers in a variety of contexts in primary school.
This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of an interactive singing-based synchronous videoconferencing program for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study was conducted in four stages: analysis of interactive singing tasks in the literature for children with ASD, examination of differences in perception of sounds transmitted via synchronous videoconferencing platform depending on the type of singing tasks and accompaniment, construction of singing-based synchronous videoconferencing program and determination of its validity, and implementation of the constructed program with three children with ASD and confirmation of its feasibility. The results showed that different types of singing tasks and accompaniment affected perception of sounds transmitted online, which highlights the importance of considering such effects when designing synchronous videoconferencing music therapy programs. Also, increases in program engagement and singing behaviors were observed for all three participants, and their caregivers reported high levels of satisfaction with the program. The findings support the applicability of this intervention as a tele-music alternative during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical implications and suggestions are discussed.
According to Edwin Gordon(1987, 1997, 2003), music aptitude is a product of interaction of innate potential and early environmental experiences. He referred to music aptitude of children up to nine years of age as developmental music aptitude which fluctuates due to musical environment. Music aptitude stabilizes at age nine, and the music aptitude after age nine is called "stabilized music aptitude". This research is to examine Gorden's hypothesis that the younger a child receives music education, the higher music aptitude. Also, this research is to experiment the effect of Audiation activities developed in Audie Music Curriculum on music aptitude. The researcher and another Audie teacher as a co-teacher guided children together for 30 minutes once a week. The pedagogy guidelines for informal guidance in music learning theory were kept throughout the classes. Also, Audie's teaching method which had been developed for Korean Kindergarten educational environment was also applied. Five-year-old subjects in Experimental group 1 experienced the Audie Music Curriculum of one year; five-year-old subjects in Experimental group 2 experienced it for two years. Primary Measures of Music Audiation was administered three times during their last year of Kindergarten. Subjects in the Control groups, one examined at the beginning and the other at the end of their last year in Kindergarten, received no Audie instruction. There was no significant difference in tonal aptitude, but there was significant difference in rhythmic aptitude(p< .05) among the experiemental groups. Because both Experimental groups showed statistical significance (p< .001) in the music aptitude increase during their academic years, the significant differences of the year-end music aptitude between control group and experimental groups were the expected result.
The purpose of this case study was to construct a social context-based musical play program for children with high-functioning Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) and to examine its applicability in improving the social skills of the children. The participants were a group of three children with high-functioning ASD with an average age of 9 years. The children participated as a group in 40-minute sessions that were implemented twice a week for 8 weeks. The children's social communication behaviors were observed during the sessions and analyzed in terms of sharing and exchanging their ideas and voluntarily interacting with peers and an adult (i.e., the researcher). The Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) was completed by the teachers of participants before and after the intervention. For all three participants, the occurrence of behaviors to exchange their ideas with peers and voluntarily interacting with an adult increased following the intervention. However, there were individual differences between the participants in terms of changes in each target behavior depending on their level of language and social skill development. These results suggest that social context-based musical play program may produce positive changes in voluntary communication with peers and play a significant role in expanding the scope of interventions that target the social communication of children with ASD.
Problems This study was aimed to find out the effects of Kindergarten education on primary school child's learning achievement and it's continuance. The specific question to be investigated in this study can he summarized as follows. 1. How did the kindergarten education effect upon primary school child's learning achievement and behavioral development? 2. How did the differences of learning achievement and behavioral development between groups of children attending kindergarten and not attending kindergarten? Methods 1. Subjects One hundred and twenty children of sixth grade and one hundred primary school's teachers were employed 1) Sixty of children were experimented groups who had received kindergarten education. Sixty of Children are Control group who had not received Kindergarten education. The subjects were sampled in N primary school in seoul and Y primary school in Taejeon. Sixty of children were boys and sixty of children were girls. 2) Fifty of teachers were sampled in N primary school in Seoul and Fifty of teachers were sampled in Y primary school in Taejeon. 2. Instrument 1) School cumulative record. School cumulative record was referred to find out the differences of school records on learning achievement in morality, National language, social studies, arithmatics, natural science, gymnastics, music, fine arts and behavioral development in industry, responsibility, coorperation, indeperdence, law abiding spirit between experimental group and control group. 2) Questionnaire paper which constructed 10 articles. Questionnaire paper asked to primary school teachers for effects of kindergarten education. Results The results of date analysis can summarized as follows. 1. Kindergarten education, generally, is regarded effective at least for school work achievement but not so effective for morality and physical education. 2. Kindergarten education is not so effective in all school works of primary school in its continuance since its effectiveness begins to fade away from the 4th grade of primary school. But such continuance tends to be outstanding especially in national language, social subjects and arts. 3. The experiences of kindergarten education is not much helpful to behavioral development during primary school. 4. Primary school teachers recognize that kindergarten education contributes to curriculum work and behavioral development for primary school children.
The purpose of this case study is to examine how group rhythmic playing can help enhance imitation skills for 3 children with developmental disabilities aged between 30-50 months. The program was composed of social musical play, the therapist's imitating the way young children played musical instruments, and the young children's imitating the way the therapist played musical instruments. Every session was videotaped, and the researcher and two music therapists checked the videotaped sessions to ensure the reliability of findings. The case study demonstrated the following results. First, the three young children who participated in the playing of rhythmic musical instruments showed an increase in imitation behaviors. Second, the infants exhibited the greatest change from 1 beat imitation according to the degree of difficulty of group rhythm musical instrument demonstrated. Third, the most radical change in the infants' ability to imitate appeared in Sessions 3-7 where the therapist imitated the operation and a performance of the infant. In conclusion, the activity of playing rhythmic musical instruments in a group generated improvement in the imitation ability of young children with developmental disabilities.

This paper is to develop an integrate curriculum of rhythm education activity program and to find the possibility of applying the program into actual music education field for kindergarten children. The outlook of this study is to develope a program integrating the elements of movement, language and rhythm to apply the program to 5 year old children for 6 weeks through 12 sessions, and to observe and analyze their level of rhythm creativity and rhythm reading ability. The analysis of the field observation data and recording data showed that the children achieved natural and better understanding of rhythm. Seen from the perspective of rhythm creation activity, while the integration of the elements of movement and rhythm influenced directly to enhance the level of understanding rhythm and the integration of the elements of language, rhythm helped indirectly to have better understanding rhythm through connecting the notions of rhythm and movements. However, when only rhythm and movements were combined, children tended to misunderstand the relative durations of ♩ and ♪ just as different tempos not as 2:1 duration relativity. And ♫ was too misunderstand as ♬ due to different durations of korean words when only rhythm and language were combined. To overcome the limit of understanding, all of the three elements; rhythm and movements and language should be integrated and constant auditory experiences are recommended.
With broad individual variability in social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorders and increasing focus on interventions targeting social communication of this population, there is a need for systematic analysis of how social communication outcomes are measured. This study aimed to systematically analyze the measurement tools used in the music therapy interventions for improving social communication of children with ASD. Electronic databases and music therapy journals were searched for controlled studies published between 1980 and 2015. A total of 21 studies were included for the analysis. The results demonstrated that direct observation of behaviors was the most frequently used and the combination of targeted social communication areas and specific measurements used for a specific skill varied among the studies. In addition, 90.4% of studies reported interrater reliability. These results indicate that there has been a diversity in approaches to measure social communication skills despite increasing attempts for systematic measurements. In consideration of the nature of social communication development in children with ASD, multifaceted strategy to understand and assess the target skills in terms of specific behavior acquisition, social functioning in general, and social cognition was recommended.
The purpose of this study is to measure the effect of musical activities on children's aggressiveness using percussion playing through case studies and to present the therapeutic programs. Musical activities using percussion playing were organized for three aggressive children. Twenty-one small group sessions were conducted over seven weeks with 30 minutes given each session. Fourth-grade children involved in using Aggressiveness Measuring Tool for Teachers-revised by Gwak Geum-Joo(1992) was selected for case studies. Children's impulsiveness was also tested through self-test measuring tool for impulsiveness-revision of 16 questions used by Cho Hae Yeon (2001) and Lee Joo Shik (2003). As quantitative method, comparative analysis was made between the pre and post test results using measuring tools for aggressiveness and impulsiveness of children as well as between aggressive behaviors occurring in the initial stage of the first three sessions and in the latter stage of the last three sessions. Qualitative method was used at the same time to examine the effect of percussion playing on children. After the musical activities, child A showed reduced Aggressive Measuring Tool scores from 19 to 18, with child B from 23 to 19 and child C from 21 to 18. The results show that occurrence of aggressive behaviors were lowered in the post test. Impulsiveness Measuring Tool scores in the post test were decreased as well in all three children. During the music therapy programs, it was also observed that the frequency of the target behaviors in all three children has reduced more in the latter stage than the initial stage of music therapy. The qualitative findings indicate that the children experienced releasing stress through self-expression after percussion playing. These findings indicate therapeutic effectiveness of music therapy using on percussion playing in reducing aggressiveness of children as well as the effectiveness of percussion as a therapeutic intervention for aggressive children. These results can be adapted and reapplied by teachers in primary schools to approach children with behavior problems, and can present a useful therapeutic approach to therapists practicing in clinical environments.
