  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in muscle activity of hamstring muscle depending on the position of the feet during Swiss ball hamstring curl exercise. Method: Total of 15 male participants with no history of hamstring muscle injuries and musculoskeletal disorders in the past 6 months were participated in this study (Age: 29.27 ± 4.96 yrs, Height: 173.47 ± 5.18 cm, Body mass: 75.47 ± 12.50 kg). The muscle activation of semitendinosus and biceps femoris with four different feet positions including neutral stance, internal rotation, external rotation, and wide stance were measured during a Swiss ball hamstring curl exercise. For the analysis, the Swiss ball exercise movement comprised of 3 events (90°→ 0°→ 90°) based on the knee angle and 2 phases relative to the mechanism of muscle contraction (eccentric/concentric contraction). To pursue the study goal, an one-way ANOVA with repeated measures was performed with statistical significance as α = 0.05. Results: There was no statistically significant feet position effect found during the Swiss ball hamstring curl with eccentric contraction phase (p>.05). It is, however, semitendinosus showed an enhanced muscle activation in concentric contraction phase, displaying the highest muscle activity in wide stance and the lowest in external rotation (p<.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that this exercise can be beneficial in selectively training the semitendinosus. In other words, Swiss ball hamstring curls performed in wide stance strengthens semitendinosus, which improves the stability of knee and are effective in preventing knee injuries and reinforces rehabilitation.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the functional differences of the two heads of the biceps brachii by measuring the functions in supination according to pronation by the angle of the flexion of the elbow joint, except for the activities of the elbow flexors. Methods: This study was conducted with 25 healthy men in their 20s. At a glenohumeral-joint 0˚ flexion posture, angles of flexion of the elbow joint of 0˚, 30˚, 60˚, 90˚, and 120˚ were randomly provided, and they were asked to perform supination and pronation with an elastic band. Using an eight-channel surface electromyogram, the muscle activities of the long and short heads of the biceps brachii were measured. The activities of the short and long heads according to the angle were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA, and as a post-test, LSD was employed. Results: The analysis of the impact of the resistance of the elastic band in supination on the differences in the muscle activities in the short and long heads suggests there was a significant difference between 0˚ and 30˚ (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In supination according to forearm pronation, the long head had greater action in the early flexion posture of the elbow joint, and it is judged that the ratio of the flexion of the elbow joint according to the actions of the biceps brachii was considered small.

  • Objectives : Jakyakgamcho-tang (JGT) has been traditionally used to treat muscular convulsion and pain in South Korea. According to recent studies, JGT has been reported to have anti-depression, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidative, anti-diabetics, anti-spasm and analgesic effects, but studies on its anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective effect have not been deeply conducted. Thus, we investigated the anti-neuroinflammatory activity of JGT on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse microglia cells. Methods : To investigate the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of JGT on BV2 microglial cells, we examined the production of nitric oxide (NO) using griess assay, and mRNA expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1𝛽, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-𝛼 using real time RT-PCR. Furthermore, to determine the regulating mechanisms of JGT, we investigated the heme oxygenase (HO)-1 by real time RT-PCR. Results : Pre-treatment of JGT effectively decreased NO production in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells at concentrations without cytotoxicity. Additionally, JGT significantly suppressed the production of IL-1𝛽, IL-6, and TNF-𝛼 in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Furthermore, JGT activated the HO-1 expression, which is one of the immunomodulatory signaling molecules. And the abolishment of HO-1 by tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPP, the HO-1 inhibitor) reversed the anti- inflammatory activity of JGT in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Conclusions : Our results suggest that the JGT has anti-neuroinflammatory effect through the activation of HO-1 in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Thereby, JGT could expected to be used for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disease related to neuroinflammation.

In the republic of Korea, cancer patients are showing an increasing trend every year. Cancer disease not only significantly reduces the quality of life in individuals, but also causes various side effects if not managed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise and resistance exercise on health-related problems in cancer patients. Methods : This study searched for studies that applied aerobic exercise and resistance exercise to cancer patients reported in search engines (google scala, dbpia, and pubmed) from 2017 to 2022. Six randomized controlled trials and two systematic reviews and meta-analyses were used for analysis in our study. "physical activity", "exercise", "aerobic exercise", "resistance exercise", and "cancer patient" were the main search terms. The data included aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, cancer patients' muscle strength, physical strength, quality of life, and physical activity. Results : According to the eight studies that met the criteria included in this review study, it was found that aerobic exercise and resistance exercise had an effect on the increase in physical fitness, muscular strength, quality of life, and range of motion in cancer survivors. Conclusion : It was confirmed that aerobic exercise and resistance exercise are safe and effective interventions that can be applied to cancer patients without side effects. A limitation of this study is that it did not examine cancer diseases in various population groups such as the elderly and children. Therefore, in future studies, studies that consider specific details such as age, gender, type of cancer, and physical differences are needed.

  • The current research examines the aching part and the muscle activity that happens during scaling practice subject to 20 dental hygienic students and therefore propose a basic data according to the working attitude of the Dental Hygienist. During the scaling we used the free EMG (BTS Inc., Milan, Italy) to measure the muscle activity, and in order to check the musculoskeletal pain area we used the Nordic-style questionnaire, and the measured research results are as following: At the moment of scaling according to posture the occurrence of the pain showed no difference among the groups elbow, back, leg, knee, ankle/foot but in the neck, shoulder, wrist/hand, waist showed a high difference in the degree of pain according to posture. Results from measuring the muscular activity according to posture, in the group that had a good posture, the trapezius and brachial muscles showed a change according to time, and in the group that had a bad posture a high muscle activity was shown in larynx, trapezius and brachial muscles. In the muscle activity, the changing aspect between the two parts, the group that fulfilled a scaling in a good posture showed a low muscle activity, but in the group that fulfilled the scaling in a bad posture the muscle activity increased excessively. Therefore we examined that when fulfilling a scaling maintaining a bad posture can help in using more effectively the activity of the muscle, in the future I think there is a need to raise the office efficiency by subjecting to dental hyginiest that are in the clinics and performing experiments.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical activity participation habits, physical fitness level, and academic performance among the Reserve Military Training Corps (ROTC). Participants in the current study were 71 ROTCs from J University. Physical activity participation was investigated using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and the level of physical fitness was measured by health-related physical fitness evaluation. For academic performance, university grade data (GPA) was approved by the head of the relevant school district, and the data were collected with the consent of the participants, and each data was analyzed. The correlation between physical activity participation habits, physical fitness level, and GPA was analyzed, and GPA by physical fitness level were compared. This study found that there was no statistically significant correlation between physical activity participation and academic performance. Otherwise, there was a statistically significant correlation between major subjects and total physical fitness score, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. By the level of physical fitness, the ROTCs in the high-physical fitness group showed statistically significantly higher academic performance than the ROTCs in the low-physical fitness group. In addition, low level of physical fitness ROTC group was lower than the other. In conclusion, ROTCs with a high physical fitness level had a positive effect on improving learning ability compared to those who did not. By recommending an autonomous but systematic exercise training program, it is suggested to improve the physical strength of ROTCs and to cultivate excellent future military officers.

  • Effects of catecholamines were investigated on isolated strips of the male cattle oesophageal groove. In the circular muscles of the bottom and longitudinal muscles of the lip. isometric tensions was recorded with isometric myograph in 25ml organ bath. The results were as follows: 1. The muscular activity was different in preparations from the two parts. In the longitudinal muscle from the lip, rhythmic contractions generally occurred. while in the circular muscle from the bottom they were not seen almost. 2. In the circular muscle of the bottom, the increased tone and biphasic contractions were caused by catecholamines. And these contractions were mediated through $\alpha$-excitatory adrenoceptor. Also circular muscle showed minor inhibitory response to catecholamines. And these effects were mediated through $\beta$-inhibitory adrenoceptor. But the circular muscle was more sensitive to the $\alpha$-excitatory effect than $\beta$-inhibitory effect. 3. In logitudinal muslce of the lip. rhythmic contractions were reduced or disappeared by catecholamines(especially propranolol) and these effects were mediated through $\beta$-adrenoceptor.

  • This study performed in order to investigate the effect of isometric resistance exercise for vastus medialis oblique muscle with EMG(electromyography) biofeedback training which are applied to the patello-femoral joint of patients with osteoarthritis on the improve of function. The subjects had no neuromuscular disorders, and they were elder patients with osteoarthritis, 20 women. And the experiment was performed in control group, taping with EMG biofeedback training group respectively, and the measurement was carried out before and after the treatment and 4 weeks after the treatment. Motor unit action potential analysis with surface electromyography showed a significant change in RMS(root mean square) amplitude and MDF(median frequency) in vastus medialis oblique muscle(p<0.05). VMO/VL(vastus medialis oblique/vastus lateralis oblique) MDF ratio showed a significant change between groups(p<0.05). Taping with EMG biofeedback training applied to patello-femoral joint of osteoarthritis patients appeared to be effective for muscle function improvement. However, increase of muscular force in vastus medialis oblique muscle appears to have a positive effect on improve of function along with correction effect on patella malalignment. In conclusion, in case of osteoarthritis patients with loss of patello-femoral joint function, it appears to be effective to practice isometric resistance exercise of vastus medialis oblique muscle selective with taping.
