Objectives : To evaluate the clinical utility of Muscle Energy Techniques(MET) in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects. Methods : We compared electrical activity between a before MET and a after MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects in same group(n=26) in dynamic flexion-reextension state during five seconds. We analyzed amplitudes and areas of electrical activity and Asymmetry Index(AI) and Median Edge Frequency(MEF). Results : 1. After MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects were lower electrical activity than before MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects but it is not a pointless observation(p<0.05). 2. AI of the after MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects significantly decreased compared with before MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects(p<0.05). 3. MEF of the after MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects decreased compared with before MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects but it is not a pointless observation(p<0.05). Conclusions : According to above results, there is clinical effect MET on subjects.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to figure out the effects of Muscle energy techniques on patients with Whiplash injury caused by traffic accidents Methods: This study was carried out on the 8 patients with cervical pain caused by whiplash injury. These patients was treated with muscle energy techniques addition to acupuncture treatment, physical therapy and herbal medication. The result of this treatment were evaluated by VAS, PAS and PSSG score. Results: The cervical pain of patients was significantly decreased in VAS, PAS and PSSG score. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it was suggested that MET treatment was effective in reducing cervical pain caused by whiplash injury.

This study was performed to report the effectiveness of oriental medical treatment and muscle energy techniques on a patient with piriformis syndrome. The patient was diagnosed as piriformis syndrome and treated with acupuncture, herb medicine, physical therapy and muscle energy techniques. We have evaluated curative efficacy with measuring changes of visual analogue scale and physical examination according to period of hospitalization. After treatment, pain and visual analogue scale decreased. Physical examinations were recuperated nearly to normal findings and ambulation was improved. These results suggest that oriental medical treatment and muscle energy techniques were effective on patient with piriformis syndrome.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of muscle energy techniques on nuchal pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods : The 20 patients were divided into 2 groups: group A was treated except muscle energy techniques and group B was treated with muscle energy techniques. Both groups were treated with acupunture treatment, physical theraphy and herbal medication. Patients were evaluated by McGill Pain Questionnaire-Short Form(SF-MPQ), Pain Disability Index(PDI) and Neck Disability Index(NDI) in traffic accident patients. Results : 1. Both Group were significantly decreased in sensory of SF-MPQ, VAS, PDI and NDI after 7 days of treatment. 2. Group B compared with the Group A was significantly decresed in VAS, PDI after 7 days of treatment. Conclusions : We found out that muscle energy techniques is considered to be effective and useful on nuchal pain caused by traffic accidents.

Objectives To evaluate the clinical usefulness between muscle energy techniques (MET) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS), we performed both on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients. Methods After performing MET and TENS, we compared both in terms of electrical activity. We performed MET or TENS on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients in each group (n=15,15). After performing MET or TENS, we analyzed root mean square (RMS), median edge frequency (MEF) and asymmetry index (AI). Results 1. After performing MET on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients, RMS was significantly decreased compared with before (p<0.005). 2. After performing TENS on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients, RMS was significantly decreased compared with before (p<0.005). 3. After performing MET on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients, asymmetric index was significantly decreased compared with before (p<0.05). Conclusions According to above results, performing MET on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients has effect in terms of RMS and asymmetric index. And performing TENS on elector spinae muscle of acute low back pain patients also has similar effect in terms of RMS but has not in terms of asymmetric index.

Object : This study was planned to show the influences of MET(muscle energy techniques) treatment and acupuncture treatment on iliopsoas muscles of sprain and strain of lumbar spine patients. Method : This study was carried out on the 39 patients who had been treated for their sprain and strain of lumbar spine from March 2 to October 15, 2010 in the department of oriental rehabilitaion medicine, Dongsuwon oriental medicine hospital. And 22 out of 39 patients had a tenderness and pain in their iliopsoas muscles. And we divided those 22 patients into 2 groups by blocked randomization; group A took near acupuncture point needling treatment on the iliopsoas muscles, group B took MET(muscle energy techniques) treatment on the iliopsoas muscles. To evaluate the efficiency of each treatment, all patients were examined with VAS(visual analogue scale) before treatment and after the 3rd, 5th treatment. Result : On the VAS, it was decreased significantly after treatment in all groups. And it didn't show the clear difference between two groups. Conclusion : In this study, it did not show statistical difference in VAS between two groups.

Objective: Musculoskeletal neck pain have many symptoms which include decreased range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength, and increased pain. However, the management methods are controversial. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three interventions on ROM, strength, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) with musculoskeletal neck pain. Design: Pretest-posttest design. Methods: Thirty subjects participated in this experiment. They were randomly assigned to thefollowing groups: passive stretching (PS) group (n=10), massage (MASS) group (n=10), and muscle energy technique (MET) group (n=10). The treatment were applied bilaterally on the upper trapezius. The PS was applied 3 times for 30 seconds each time. The MASS was applied using two different techniques for 2 minutes per technique. For MET, the subjects performed 2 sets of 3 repetitions of isometric resistance exercise that was maintained for 10 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest. ROM, strength, and PPT parameters were measured after intervention. Results: In the MASS group, there was a significant improvement in all outcomes except for muscle strength (p<0.05). In the MET group, ROM and strength significantly improved compared to the pre-treatment results (p<0.05). As result of measuring the amount of change in each group, there was a significant difference in ROM (flexion) in the PS group compared with the MASS and MET group, a significant difference in strength in the MET group compared with the PS and MASS groups, and a significant difference in PPT in the MASS groups compared with the PS and MET groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that PS, MASS, and MET are effective methods for improving ROM, strength, and PPT for musculoskeletal neck pain. Therefore, various therapeutic interventions for improving ROM, strength, and pain are suggested.
