  • WDM optical communication system requires wavelength division multiplexing, reverse multiplexing and optical filter. OADM is a device that can separate or combine specific wavelength of channel from the transmission line. This paper suggests OADM that uses 2 steps FBG based on MZI structure. The OADM that uses 2 steps FBG can minimize the system size and reduce the value of side lobe remarkably. The results obtained in this paper can be used for design and application of OADM that uses 2 steps FBG.

  • We proposed a novel fractal-space multiplexing holographic memory system using moving window and double-focusing lens, which can eliminate crosstalk due to two neighboring moving window rows in the vertical direction of the conventional moving window holographic memory system, and demonstrated its feasibility through optical experiments.

  • A novel optical cell compressor for optical time division multiplexing system is presented. The compressor is capable of generating optically compressed very high bit-rate (possibly several tens of Gb/s) signals with minimum hardware. Contrast to the previously reported optical compressor, the compressor is mainly composed of passive optical devices and requires no synchronization among control signals in the process of compression, which results in simple implementation. We demonstrate a generation of optically compressed 6 Gb/s optical cells to confirm the fundamental operation of the compressor.

  • In this paper, we propose a new turbo-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme that can improve greatly the performance by making all the turbo-coded symbols have the same reliability for OFDM transmission over a frequency selective fading channel. The same reliability, that is, the same fading can be accomplished through multiplexing of turbo-coded symbols using distinct orthogonal codes and spreading over the whole effective subcarriers (hereafter, called as the orthogonal code multiplexing (OCM)). As for the orthogonal code selection, we choose the set of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) basis sequences, since the code set holds the orthogonality irrespective of the length and also has the equal energy property. We perform computer simulations using the Log-maximum-a-posteriori (Log-MAP) algorithm for iterative decoding in order to assess the performance of the proposed transmission scheme.

  • Although the individual channel readout method can improve the performance of PET detectors with pixelated photo-sensors, such as silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), this method leads to a significant increase in the number of readout channels. In this study, we proposed a novel multiplexing method that could effectively reduce the number of readout channels to reduce system complexity and development cost. The proposed multiplexing circuit was designed to generate bipolar pulses with different zero-crossing points by adjusting the time constant of the high-pass filter connected to each channel of a pixelated photo-sensor. The channel position of the detected gamma-ray was identified by estimating the width between the rising edge and the zero-crossing point of the bipolar pulse. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed multiplexing circuit, four detector blocks, each consisting of a 4 × 4 array of 3 mm × 3 mm × 20 mm LYSO and a 4 × 4 SiPM array, were constructed. The average energy resolution was 13.2 ± 1.1% for all 64 crystal pixels and each pixel position was accurately identified. A coincidence timing resolution was 580 ± 12 ps. The experimental results indicated that the novel multiplexing method proposed in this study is able to effectively reduce the number of readout channels while maintaining accurate position identification with good energy and timing performance. In addition, it could be useful for the development of PET systems consisting of a large number of pixelated detectors.

  • Improving the transmission rates of multi-media delivery, such as moving pictures and internet services, has become increasingly important in modern society. To satisfy such high data rate requirements, the MIMO technique, which has the capacity to transmit large amounts of data using limited frequency resources, was developed. The Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) system is one of the MIMO techniques to be able to improve the transmission capacity. However, it is unable to achieve diversity gain because of interference due to the use of multiple antennas. In this paper, an SDM system that utilizes a Multi-Block method as an advanced transmission technique in a wireless communication system to obtain diversity gain is proposed and discussed fur the performance of the proposed system.

  • In this paper, performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in an impulsive noise environment is analyzed. Here, it is verified that performance of the OFDM system with window nonlinearity, which is one of the impulsive noise mitigation algorithms, is dependent on the over-sampling rate and the size of window. With respect to the variation of those parameters, we also provide an appropriate region of threshold values that control amplitudes of the sampled waveform of received signals. As a result, a new combination of parameters which improves error performance of OFDM system in an impulsive noise environment as compared to the previously reported parameters is presented.

  • Computer simulations of the recording and reading of holograms in an 8-bit phase-code multiplexing system are presented. From the computer simulation each recording time of eight holograms is obtained such that the strength of restored holograms is same. An analytic formula to predict the recording times is derived by fitting the formula to the computer simulation data. It is found that our analytic formula can predict the hologram recording time not only in 8-bit system but also in 16-bit and 32-bit systems in an error less than $\pm$8.4%. Optical experiments are also performed in a 4-bit phase code-multiplexing system. It is found that the strength of the restored holograms is more uniform compared with conventional methods.

  • In recent years Fiber optic hydrophone systems have been the focus of much attention in the sonar world. For sonar arrays, a fiber optic approach offers the major benefit of passive multiplexing of large numbers of hydrophones without underwater electronics. This paper describes recent development work covering array construction, opto-electronics development, hydrohpone design and sea trials. And the development of an interferometric mult-channel fiber optic hydrophone system which uses time division multiplexing capable of driving in excess of 32 channel is described. For this, a 12 channel time division multiplexing array has been constructed, and the performance of this system is demonstrated by sea trial.
